Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Soothing, Calming, and Peaceful .......2007-08-07

I run my partner's construction company from home, and let me just say that this industry can be very stressful at times (not to mention my own brain activity). So, I've been looking for a way to calm myself (besides Bikram yoga). I only just found this on Yahoo! Music today, and have literally been listening to it on repeat (all 6 tracks) for then entire day while I worked (typing, phone, contracts, etc). It has not interferred at all, and I feel completely and utterly calm. I even forgot that I left it on, and dashed out the door to Bikram for 90 minutes, which is very challenging, only to walk through the door to my house, and into totally calm energy again. This cd is truly a gift. I recommend it for calm-inducing benefits during work, massage, meditation, and will be trying it while I sleep this evening as well. They also have a dvd of the same name, but I haven't seen it. I had great difficulty locating this cd on Amazon, and finally found it by typing in "Nature's Balance", which is the company itself. It would be helpful to be able to access it using the keyword "waterfalls" or "waterfall sounds". I even put in the title of the cd, and it still wouldn't come up. Priceless must-have if being calm and content is important to you.

Original Music Credits.......2004-10-23

Being one of the two musicians on this album, I can assure the listeners that this music is purely original. I improvised all flute tracks while Michael improvised the underlying strings and piano tracks. Certain bass lines and added background instruments were added in post-production. However, all melody lines are 100% original improvisations.
I believe this album will provide you a listening experience unlike any other. The Native American Flutes are truly magical instruments and provided a peaceful transport of my feelings into music.

"Balance of Nature" is a soothing collaboration by Chuck Offutt on Native American flutes and Michael Dulin on piano and keyboards. The inspiration for the album came from a week Dulin spent in the mountains of North Carolina. Retreating from the noise of the city and a hectic recording schedule, Dulin returned with a new mission - "to create music that could flow wordlessly into the heart of the listener as naturally as the peace and power of the mountains had flowed into me." The music was not intended to be representative of Native American culture, but the wooden flutes were the perfect medium to express the beauty of the untouched world. All of the pieces are played at a leisurely tempo which gives the album a consistent flow from start to finish. The flutes have a rather limited range, and Dulin keeps the individual pieces distinctive by varying the keyboard and piano sounds. Dulin's work on this album is more or less in the background, but it is his sensitivity and expressive playing that bring out the beauty of the flute's haunting and evocative quality. No rhythm tracks are used, and if I had to classify it, I would call `Balance of Nature" ambient" because of the floating quality and lack of distinct melody lines. Listening to this album can melt away the stresses of the day and provide a musical massage for the mind. Very nicely done!
