Sheila Chandra's fourth Indipop album, released in 1985 in a limited edition before she took a five-year hiatus, sets the stage for the ethereal vocal style she explored during the 1990s. Comprised of five songs, Nada Brahma spotlights a younger Chandra exploring numerous vocal techniques. The 27-minute title track showcases her lush vocals in an intriguing (if loosely connected) series of vocal maneuvers--ethereal streams of sound, appealing Indian melodies, and staccato-syllable dances. This is beguiling, organic ambient music with occasional accompaniment by keyboards, percussion, or other instruments.

The other four tracks are more rhythmically grounded examples of Anglo-Indian fusion, including the gently hypnotic atmospheric pop of "The Awakening" and the energetic dance pulse of "Question the Answer," which features Chandra singing in English. While this early album may not have the flow or cohesiveness of later efforts like AboneCroneDrone, Nada Brahma spotlights a heavenly voice expanding its expressiveness and is recommended for fans of Chandra and of beautiful vocal music. --Bryan Reesman

meditative music with a lot more than just easy listening.......1998-05-19

This is a lot more than just another meditation record. Indian ragas at their best, without anyone trying hard to suit the western taste, this is one of the rare "authentic" pieces of indian music that still can be apreciated by western ears.

What amazes me most is the variety of different styles and the shere quality of the music. I'd give it a rating of 10 if it were a bit longer (I think, it's only something like 35 minutes!)

early Sheila.......2001-05-21

The first track of this CD is an inventive exploration of different vocal sounds...Sheila writes in the insert: "The musical story of 'Nada Brahma' ('Sound is God') was a perfect vehicle for me as a writer and singer to illustrate a great variety of Indian and pop vocal styles"...and it set the stage for work she'd be doing a decade later.

The rest of the tracks are "Indi-pop" with a steady beat..."The Awakening", "In Essence", and "Question the Answer" were written by Steve Coe and Martin Smith, and the best of the 3 is perhaps "Question the Answer" which has lyrics (in English) and some marvelous instrumentation...but my favorite track is "Raqs", an up-tempo precussive piece penned by Sheila.

This is an interesting CD if you like world music, and it's an example of what this creative artist has done in one of the many phases of her career.

Perhaps the title might be a bit overstated, but the Sonic Explorers mesh the sound of straight ahead big bands rather seamlessly with dashes of old European folk music. On "So Far, So Near" tremendous arrangement and writing ability is complimented well with a solid chemistry among the performers. The songs are cinematic in feel ("Geraldo's Hideaway" seems almost lifted from a Fellini film) as they tell exciting sound-based stories and draw the listener in with full attention every time. Highly recommended listening.

Sonic Explorers, an ensemble ranging in instrumentation from four to seven players, were formed in Massachusetts in 1995. Their leader, Jerry Sabatini, recently left his twenty-year career in electrical engineering for the sake of jazz. "So Far, So Near" is Sonic Explorers' third album. Its title as well as its cover implies an oriental tendency. The group draws inspiration from Asia, Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, modern classical and latin-american music and infuse it quite successfully with jazz logic and forms. An admirer of the cosmic fusion of Frank Zappa, Sabatini's music also resembles that of Hieroglyphics Ensemble, the marvelous early `90s orchestra of Peter Apfelbaum. The arrangements of "Balkalla" and "Geraldo's Hideaway", two wonderful compositions, are reminiscent of Carla Bley's work with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. Sabatini's trumpet playing is unadorned and essential and his inspired and elegant compositions have a storytelling mood. "There's a cinematic sense to what I'm doing", the trumpeter says. His seven collaborators may not be famous but they are all excellent and experienced musicians who have worked with great jazz players. In a few words the contact with Sonic Explorers' music gives us the chance to participate in the sonic explorations of a mature and promising ensemble.
