4 out of 5 stars FZ Journal Entry #2.......2005-06-08

Since the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed, rock groups have been trying to fuse the orchestral soundscape with the rock idiom with varying degrees of success. Most of these projects have a pastiche approach, in that the two styles rarely intermingle directly. Instead, the orchestra fills in the blanks between rock statements. Orchestral Favorites differs from other cross-genre recordings in that it clearly and successfully shows the common ground between Frank's rock and orchestral sensibilities.

Too orchestral to be rock, and too rock to be orchestral, the five instrumental tracks on Orchestral Favorites contain some of Franks most compelling and memorable melodies. In particular, Strictly Genteel could almost be the School Song of some imaginary arts magnet school. The Duke of Prunes is also a favorite, featuring fantastic use of orchestral impact behind a blistering guitar solo that really shows Frank's mastery of electric guitar feedback. However, prepare yourself for the denser compositions Pedro's Dowry and Naval Aviation in Art?, which show his Stravinskyesque use of layers. The final track Bogus Pomp straddles the line between these extremes with an electrifying opening melody that pops up periodically during layered sections.

The Lowdown: Probably not a recording for the beginning Frank fan, it most certainly is one for the intermediate. It's a great look at the places where Frank's styles overlapped. It can be a little dense sometimes, but overall its quite memorable.

4 out of 5 stars where the f*** does this guy get off??.......2004-08-17

briefly, i have real questions, at a cursory glance, as to what the h*** kireviewer, whatever his name is, speaks of when he's alluding to this being released in '74??!!?? his mere mention of this being released in 1974 discredits anything he has to say. recorded in '75, released in '79, this fellow is believing it was released in '76??? huh?? a top 500 reviewer??? sure he's not a programmer for clearview or mtv?
i was at this show. it was another great evening of zappa music. not to mention showcasing bozzio and an impromptu "louie, louie" featuring beefheart.

this release was part of a THREE lp release, Lather, and yes indeed, WB locked up and f***ed up almost all aspects of fz's music at this juncture in his development.

it's a great representation of where mr. zappa was in september of 1975. tween bands, a small electric symphony orchestra and a really nice evening of music better than, oh, almost anything else that was being spewed forth in the "rock" segment of musical society, circa 1975.

if you're this far into it, drop the bucks, add this to your collection and let it serve as another marker on the long highway zappa traveled in pursuit of the big note.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome........2003-06-05

This cd has a lot of fun and enough classical traits to make it a gormet listening adventure. What is not so hot about the CD is the fact that it was hacked into conception by Warner Brothers. FZ didn't intend this release to be out in this fashion. Check out Lather release for the intentions and over all feel of where the songs would fit.... but these pieces are second to none. All good and Terry Bozzio rules.

5 out of 5 stars Great mid-70s Zappa.......2002-10-11

One of his best collections of works. 40-piece orchestra and a few electrified instruments. Terry Bozzio on drums. But check out "review #1" for the broader picture and details!

4 out of 5 stars Don't blame Frank for this.......2002-04-05

This album is one of three Warner Brothers releases that Frank didn't have much involvement in (thus, the horrid cover art). The other two are Sleep Dirt and Studio Tan.
These three, along with other material from In New York, were originally intended for release as a four-album boxed set called Lather. When WB refused to release them as a boxed set, Frank provided them with the three albums all at once to complete his contract. WB was required to release any material within 6 weeks, whether as a boxed set or individually. Not wanting to release all this material so close together, Warner balked, and re-arranged the material, and released them over the course of 9 months. This prompted a long-running lawsuit that was never resolved to the artist's satisfaction.
If you really want the material present on Orchestral Favorites presented in the context of the original play sequence, buy the Lather 3-CD set, which was eventually remastered and released by Ryco in 1996. Nonetheless, if you're the kind of person who appreciates Zappa only for his humor and rock/guitar material, you will undoubtedly be disappointed by these selections, in or out of context. If your musical tastes are broader, I agree with other reviewers that The Yellow Shark and The Grand Wazoo are better representations of the true symphonic genius of FZ.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous entertainer with a wonderful voice.......2007-01-19

I purchased this album and it was the 2nd of his purchases. The first one just made me want more. This is a fantastic album and the songs are great. He is a handsome man with a sexy voice that rates right up there with Elvis Presley. If I had the money I would buy the larger song collection for sale on here. I listen to his records EVERY DAY and never tire of hearing that voice singing to me. I did happen to catch one of his personal appearances on the Wilburn brothers show on the RFD dish channel, it was a rare treat to be able to see him perform. Thanks Amazon for shipping my cd's so promptly. I am surely enjoying them.

4 out of 5 stars A different sound.......2005-11-19

I am not quite sure how to rate this album. Stonewall Jackson had one of the most distinct voices and sounds in country music, so I'm not sure why the change here to the so called "outlaw" movement of the early-mid '70's. Stonewall does not sound comfortable at all with this sound and you can hear it readily in his music; especially the remakes of songs in his catalog. Now, with that said, there are some real gems here, to include: "The Pint of No Return", "Alcohol of Fame", and "Listening to Johnny Paycheck". I am happy this was a short-lived stunt for Stonewall, as it just does not seem natural (to the listener or the performer). Still, all in all, if you are a real diehard fan of Stonewall Jackson, this is a must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Personal Favorite For All Seasons.......2005-11-23

Like the other reviewer here, I too first heard this album on my satellite service a few years ago..."Jockey On The Carousel" caught my ear, and right then and there I knew I had to have this album. I ran across this at Tower Records...the last one in the rack. I tend to lean toward the Jerome Kern tunes a little more (no slight intended against the great Cole Porter). "I Dream Too Much" is another beautiful arrangement by Gould. This guy was something else, and in spite of his Pulitzer Prize win for the 1994 composition String Music, Gould was and still is criminally underrated. I play this for my seven year old daughter at night and she loves it. Get this album while its still available.

5 out of 5 stars Kern/Porter Favorites.......2004-08-02

I have heard this album over and over again on our satellite TV service and it is absolutely gorgeous. It is one of those collections that just keeps on reminding us music lovers that Jerome Kern and Cole Porter knew how to write music that engages the mind and soothes the soul. What more can we ask? Any lover of the best of Broadway and this genre of American music must have this album in their collection!

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

4 out of 5 stars An Exquisite Blend Of Two Remarkable Talents.......2005-06-22

Valerie Day and Tom Grant truly sound natural working together, and conveying a passion they seem to have for these songs. What's more, they make the listener feel right at home, as if they are intimately performing to us like old friends sitting around the piano in your living room (only these two have real talent!) They prove that songs can age like wine, right from the start, with "Exactly Like You" sounding as lively and magical as the Nat King Cole Trio's version. They comfortably sway from Tin Pan Alley with the title track, to Broadway with "On The Street Where You Live," to the Brill Building with "Up On The Roof," and to Brazil with "So Danco Samba," never losing a sweet endearing sense of continuity. The whole is wonderful, and so is the sum of the parts. Day has proven herself to be a remarkable vocalist, and Grant knows just how to showcase that, showing how a piano alone can be as complimentary as a seventeen piece big band. Neither performer upstages the other in the process. SIDE BY SIDE is a welcome addition to the music collection of any connoisseur of the "Music Of Your Life" genre.

3 out of 5 stars good performances, only ok sound.......2006-12-01

This archival recording is more important for its rarity of material than its sound quality. The sound is mono throughout. It's very clear and precise, but the mono from the 1950s is unexpected given Stokowski's experimentation with stereo for the previous decade. The contemporary Grainger material (taken from English folk songs and morris dances) seems also a bit on the lightweight side given Stokowski's fame for heavy and emotionally pounding romantic material he's famed for.

The Clare de Lune, also a mono recording, is only slightly above par of the Fantasia dvd extra (which is showing signs of age). The recent EMI Classics release of Stokowski conducting Debussy is in stereo and a better performance as well.
