5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to My Collection.......2006-10-29

Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

5 out of 5 stars Apollo's Lyre come to life.......2005-05-03

Five hundred years ago, a humble lute student by the name of Vidal recorded his master's compositions in a hand-drawn tabulature book. Well aware of the ill-fate befalling musical masterpieces with the passage of time and generations, he decided to embellish the book's pages with fantastic hand-painted scenes - "so that even the unlearned man, seduced by its visual beauty, may preserve it and pass it on intact."

It is thanks to Vidal's foresight that today this precious manuscript survives, along with the sublime music it contains. And this CD is one of the absolute best performances of it I have heard.

Paul O'Dette chose three composers to represent early Northern Italian lute output: along with Vidal's master (Vincenzo Capirola, dated around 1517), there is the music from the two earliest surviving printed lute tabulature books - Francesco Spinacino and Joanambrosio Dalza (1508).

This early lute music is extremely diverse and fascinating, and O'Dette does it full justice in both piece-selection and interpretation. Dalza is best known for his bold dances, which show a strong influence of when the lute was played with a plectrum rather than picked with the fingers. Spinacino stands out for his fiery ricercari, with alternating fast single-note runs and brief counterpointal meditations. But it is Capirola and his vast tapestry of colors that gets the lion's share in this CD (dances, ricercari, vocal pieces set for lute).

Words cannot describe how expressive and varied this music is. Listen to tracks 4 (Ricercare primo), 7 (Padoana bellissima) and 8 (Spagna seconda) to get a sense of the confidence and the maturity that this style had achieved by the early 16th Century.
The lute was rigtfully considered the most versatile musical medium, second only to the human voice - and O'Dette's performance of this incredible music makes you understand why.

Even among O'Dette's excellent CD lineup, this selection stands out as an extraordinary achievement. I could not recommend it more enthusiastically.

5 out of 5 stars Holds Its Own After Three Decades.......2005-05-08

Virgin’s David Munrow Edition was issued to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the unfortunate passing of this amazing man who influenced the British early music scene at the beginning of the seventies like no other – as musicologist, music journalist, musical instrument collector and, of course, as performer. “The Art of the Netherlands” was originally a 3-LP collection, one of the last that Munrow made, having been recorded in London’s Abbey Road studios in February and April 1975. As might be expected from such a collection, it offers an overview of the creative efforts of the Dutch-Flemish school of composition between approx. 1450 and 1550. The first of the two CDs is devoted entirely to secular songs by Josquin Desprez, Heinrich Isaac, Hayne van Ghizeghem (with arrangements by Alexander Agricola), Antoine Brumel, Johannes Ghiselin, Jacob Obrecht, Johannes Ockeghem and Antoine Busnois – most of these names will be familiar to those who love the choral music of this age, but of the songs here presented, only a few are commonly performed. Munrow’s performance practice, using countertenors and a whole array of mediaeval and renaissance instruments as accompaniment, could raise an eyebrow today, a more puristic approach being generally preferred, but the result is definitely worth hearing, with some excellent singing by James Bowman and a team of up to fourteen singers. The sound quality is excellent, although the stereo panorama does not appear to be as broad as on some other Munrow discs.

The second of the two CDs is divided between a composite mass that Munrow has put together from movements by Johannes Tinctoris, Brumel, Josquin, Pierre de la Rue and Isaac, and a series of sacred and Marian motets by Obrecht, Compère, Josquin, Jean Mouton, Ockeghem, Obrecht and La Rue (with alternative ascriptions in some cases and complemented by the usual anonymi). This second disc is strictly vocal without instrumental accompaniment, something that is not only historically accurate but also makes for absolute clarity in listening. Munrow’s choir is made up of men only except on one single track where he uses two sopranos; the voices are superb and enable one to revel in this delightful music. The way bass Terry Edwards maintains the deep tessitura in some of the motets is, I find, particularly impressive. Of course, there are plenty of recordings around today (in the meantime 30 years have passed) with this kind of music sung by mixed choirs (Tallis Scholars, the Sixteen) in impeccable performances, but Munrow and his all-male team are still able to hold their own after all these years.

The works on this 2-CD set all come from a single source: a document called "Cancionero de Montecassino" which is believed to contain works composed between 1430 and 1480. Somehow the document has survived down through the centuries; it was almost lost when the Abbey where it was stored was bombed in 1944. Luckily the document survived so that this amazing CD set could be recorded by the - also amazing - Le Capella Reial de Catalunya.

This CD is the second in a series entitled "Musicas Reales", the first of which being "Carlos V" containing works mainly from the 16th century. If you enjoyed that one, then "Alfons V el Magnanim" will be a welcome addition to your CD spinner.

There is beautiful polyphony, harmony, pieces for single and multiple voices, trumpets, violins, and much much more all packed into 2 CDs that run over an hour each (CD1 is over 71 minutes long, CD2 is over 74 minutes long, so you get plenty of music for the price). The musicians and choir are stunning, and the music will stick with you long after the CDs stop rotating.

The first CD focuses on the Religious music contained in the Cancionero de Montecassino, and is thus more subdued and ethereal than the second CD which contains profane music from the same source. The second CD has some uppidty tunes and the mood is drastically different from the relatively more subdued first CD. The CDs together represent a wide range of the music of the 15th century. Alfons V made Naples his homebase, and from this city he attracted musicians from all over - what was then known as - "the world". Thus, this collection is really an amalgam of many styles and contains music sung in many languages. The CD booklet contains much information about Alfons V, the Cancionero de Montecassino, and the music on these CDs (in 6 languages, which is typical for Alia Vox). This collection is well worth the price and will reward many listenings for any fan of early Renaissance music.

        Album Description

Released for the first time ever, this concert recording of Jan DeGaetani showcases the legendary mezzo's work in the felid of early music- recorded in 1977, and the peak of her powers. It is a little known fact the DeGaetani's career started as a performer of early music, so that this disc is a revelatory addition to her discography. The spectacular flexibility and purity of intonation that DeGaetani brought to so many contemporary scores serve her beautifully in this well-recorded document. Accompanied by the great lutenist Paul O'Dette, as well as viola da gamba player Judith Davidoff and a shawm player Philip West, this recital ranges from the Medieval music through the Renaissance, and includes music by John Dowland, Donato de Cascia, Hayne van Ghizeghem, Giulio Caccini, and Oswald von Wolkenstein.

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD indeed.......2005-07-02

Few people are aware that Petrucci developed printed music and he was responsible for the printed dissemination of many works of composers of the Prima Prattica. Represented here on this CD are works by virtually every really major composer of this time including Isaac, Josquin, Agricola, Obrecht and Brumel - only de la Rue and Gombert seem to be at all missing. The idea of recording them is a brilliant one and Fretwork really make their instruments sing with the lovely rich tone characteristic of a chest of viols. I agree that these works may require multiple listens to fully appreciate but with their contrapunctal intricacies, they contain great depth and beauty that are richly rewarding - reminiscent of the Art of Fugue or the Musical Offering of Bach. The comparison is all the more apt when you consider that Bach would have had many of these composers, especially Josquin, held up to him as models from which to learn the art of counterpoint.

5 out of 5 stars Unmissable recital of early music on early strings .......2005-02-12

This is a marvellous disc, one which sustains, indeed demands repeated listening. It could well be the best thing the veteran fretwork viol ensemble have ever done. These are not dance pieces but songs without words - instrumental arrangements of the Franco-Flemish polyphonic art-songs of the fifteenth century - compiled and arranged by an early sixteenth printer (the first music printer ever in fact), and played on viols which aproximate those used c 1600.
Fretwork outdo themsleves, playing these pieces with an an almost violin- like crispness and precision of attack, and producing a silverly, "throaty" sonority characteristic of viols. In a generous 70 minute+ programme, they skillfully alternate pieces in 3 parts with those scored up to a full 6. This is, if not music expressly intended to 'move' to, then music of gravity and emotion, the distillation of what even in the 1500's was seen as a pioneering age for art music, to be listened to in the same breath as the late Beethoven quartets.

4 out of 5 stars Great instrumental performance.......2002-10-09

I like this CD very much. The only thing that I can say that is bad about it is that it does not have any singing - it has all instrumentals. The beauty of this genre is not readily aparent at first exposure. The tunes are not as "catchy" as those in the frottola genre. However, after several sessions of listening to it, the subtle beauty begins to grow and reveal itself, like a vine growing on a tree trunk. These works are really quite exquisite once you get to know them, lovely like flowers on a vine. The composers are an excellent representation of the genre. I recommend it to singers who have the sheet music and want to use a recording as a study tool. Dr. Marion Ceruti, mezzosoprano

3 out of 5 stars an acquired taste..........2002-02-20

Sorry to say, this music is not my cup of tea. It seems a bit dull and unobtrusive, rarely toe tapping in any shape or form. After a time, I found myself wanting to put on something else. Still, the music is well performed by one of the great early instrument ensembles. I do enjoy music for viols, but this music just may be a bit too "early" for me. If you appreciate this genre, you might wish to audition prior to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This album is a mystical masterpiece and demonstrates the diversity of the troupe LA NEF!!!!.......2007-02-11

I have 4 of their albums, including "The Garden of Earthly Delights". I found this album to be more "mystically enchanting" than their other works. Typically, the album is presented as a themed play sung or played in about 17 acted scenes or "tracks". THE GARDEN* however, is more instrumental than say "Music for Joan the Mad", and, definately more mystical than "Le Monsignor".

I HIGHLY recommend you collect ALL OF LA NEF'S WORKS. This album is unique and isn't comparative to any of La Nef's other work. It stands out soley from all the rest and your collection wouldn't be complete without it. Although I prefer "Joan the Mad" and "The Quest for the Holy Grail" over this album (soley because I love the storylines), I'm very satisfied with my collection and happy I bought it.

My testimony of this troupe is -- BUY EVERYTHING THEY PRODUCE...THEY'RE THAT GOOD! Each album is a book. Each scene or "track" is creative, entertaining and thoroughly nourishing to the soul. If you haven't gone Mideval....JUST LISTEN TO THIS.

5 out of 5 stars a journey into the lightness of dark.......2003-11-25

This album offers an eclectic display of medieval music. We get pieces from the Cathar, French, Spanish, Andalusian &Sephardic traditions - yet the tunes blend easily - just like the bizarre beings in the famous triptych by H. Bosch melt into a fascinating whole. The Bosch painting is intensely personal, as each viewer picks out the details, patterns and configurations that speak to her.... and the same is true with this collection of 14th & 15th century music presented by La Nef, the sextet founded in 1991 by Sylvain Bergeron. the pieces are all played with medieval instruments (including lute, oud, the vielle, psaltery and santur); La Nef adapted a few pieces to address modern sensibilities, yet the adaptations ring true to me; perhaps this is what the Cathars really wanted?! I have listened to this CD many times and will listen to it again. And again. Recommended.
