Amazon.com essential recording

Andrea Bocelli's Sogno ("Dream") is a pop album of entirely original compositions that evoke traditional and modern influences. Bocelli himself describes the CD as secular Italian traditional melodic music with a contemporary twist. The album's 14 tracks include "The Prayer," a Bocelli and Celine Dion duet produced by David Foster; "Come un Fiume Tu," an intriguing collaboration with soundtrack maestro Ennio Morricone; "O Mare e Tu," a duet with Dulce Pontes; and "Sogno" (the first single excerpted from the album), a light-as-a-feather, emotional composition sung by Bocelli with his typical vocal emphasis, which has made him famous around the world since the release of his self-titled debut. --Ernesto De Pascale

4 out of 5 stars Romance.......2007-06-12

If you like your music nice and low and in Italian, you'll love Andrea Bocelli. I do, that's why I have almost everything he's done. This truly is music for people over 40 who want and like romance in their life. (what can I say except I'm getting old)

5 out of 5 stars Andrea's masterpiece.......2007-04-20

This is the most beautiful music you will ever listen to.Andrea has a way of bringing out your innermost soul. The music can make you cry just to listen to it,even if you don't understand the words(which are translated in the booklet).Highlights are Sogno and Immenso for beauty,The Prayer and Nel Cuore Lei for stellar duets, and Canto Della Terra for the rapturous glory of Andrea's voice. If you buy nothing else from Andrea, buy this.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection Of Songs!.......2007-03-28

The tone of so many of this album's songs is almost reverent. Truly, this group of songs is one of Mr. Bocelli's best works. I recommend it for your own collection, as well as for gift-giving.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-07-01

My parents owned this album then lost it along with other great albums many years ago, now I have a copy of this in LP (record format). The original album contains 3 records with a total of 30 songs and I have never been able to find the exact release in CD format. Most CD releases like this one only contain a partial listing of the original album. If they ever release it in its' full glory I will buy it in a second. I can only say that I feel sorry for all individuals that do not understand or speak Spanish, because great songs like these can never be translated into English with the same fervor, and gut wrenching soulfulness that this album brings.
I can genuinely say this album in its' LP glory is one of my greatest treasures.

5 out of 5 stars How Divine!.......2007-05-21

Have you ever had a CD that the minute you heard it you fell instantly in love with it? That's what happens with Canta en Espanol. It doesn't matter if you understand Spanish or or, the beauty, poetry and melodic nature of the music transcends any language barrier. The guitars are soft and gentle, the voices lush and filled with emotion and passion that can only be Latin. The result is incredibly romantic. Listen to it with someone you love or someone you'd like the sparks to fly.

3 out of 5 stars Eydie Gorme in all her glory!.......2007-04-01

Combine the gorgeous voice of Eydie Gorme, with the talented music trio Los Panchos, and what do you get? Some of the most amazing, beautiful music ever recorded!

Although she's best-known for her collaborations with husband Steve Lawrence, Miss Eydie Gorme also enjoyed a rich and popular partnership with the Los Panchos, and they recorded a few albums together; the best probably being 'Canta En Espanol'.

On this album (remastered in stereo for the very first time), Eydie Gorme gets to wrap her sensuous, velvet voice around such pieces as "Amor", "Sabor A Mi", "Noche de Ronda", and "Historia de un Amor".

Gorme's phrasing and accents are absolutely spot-on, and the arrangements from Los Panchos are very lush, suiting Gorme's vocals perfectly. For fans of Eydie Gorme, this would be a fine title.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-03-12

I remember listening to this as a child, my mom and grandma would play it. Over the years it was lost during moves. I'm so glad that I was able to find it on CD. I love the music Eydie Gorme's voice is so beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-30

Absolutely beautiful voice, accompanied by an exceptional Trio (Los Panchos) Highly recommend this CD. , would be perfect if words to the songs were included.

Really a great album blending chants with new age. Very peaceful to listen to. If you like ENIGMA, then this is the style for you!

3 out of 5 stars Goth Chant + Electronica + Trance.......2007-06-07

Enchanted Spirits by Magna Canta features the pleasant combination of Gregorian chant with electronica and sensual grooves.

1. Aethera a El Terra - Chant melded with melodic, slow trance rhythms peppered with an awesome groove. Male and female choral chants are utterly glorious. (5 Stars)

2. Hymns - Smooth and lively, this track melds sounds of pipe organs with rhythmic beats. I'm not crazy about the female vocalist saying stuff like "You are far away but still so close. Why did you go?" Still, this is a gentle, soothing groove. (3 Stars)

3. Agnus Dei - Moderately paced electronica with male and female chants, some of this song seems repetitive, but still lovely. (4 Stars)

4. Cantandus - Stars off with a soaring female vocal chant then goes into an awesomely ethereal groove. Expansive and spacey, but grounded with softly insistent synths. (5 Stars)

5. Silentium - Male chorals with a foreboding, tentative beat. (The heavy breathing ala Darth Vader is a bit off putting to say the least!) Then, the tempo picks up with female chorals overlapping a danceable beat. The male chorals "answer"--and there's a nice change-up in rhythm towards the end. (4 Stars)

6. Recordare - This song also begins a bit ominously, but then switches to a happier melody with female and male chorals. Relaxing. (3 Stars)

7. Offizium - Epic sounding--I could heard this song as part of a space movie score. I like how it picks up the pace towards the end, finishing with lilting synths and piano. (3 Stars)

8. Ritmo - Begins with a glorious male chant. This song reminds me of Enigma. Very cool chill out with synth flutes and cascading keyboards. The male chant is the real star of this song. What ruins the song for me, though, is a man whispering "Be quiet--big boys don't cry". It seemed out of place to me. (3 Stars)

9. Gregoria - Rousing male choral with wild dance beat. In fact, the insistent beat is a bit TOO much, but the unusual jungle-like synth effects add interest. Midway, a very cool synth section reminds me a bit of Eiffel 65. (3 Stars)

10. Alleluia - Begins with some chant and flutes, but then some guy with an indecipherable accent begins too talk--sounding a lot like the boozy Captain Jack. The beat is so pronounced, it's almost headache inducing. It's certainly not a danceable tune even by trance standards, and the beat is enervating. (2 Stars)

11. Spiritus Sanctus - Brisk, ethereal tune that flows into an intriguing climax that breaks out into a poppy, upbeat celebration of what's highest and best in mankind. Lovely chorals--but by this point, the pounding beat has all but given me a headache. If they'd only toned down the heavy beats in the foreground and allowed the voices and high-end synths do all their glorious work! It would have made for a truly triumphant song. (3.5 Stars)

12. Sancta Maria - Sounds of surf and gently crashing waves that flow into a slow groove with a way-too-chipper fluttering of instruments. (3 Stars)

In conclusion, if the rest of the songs would have matched the caliber of the first song, this would have been an outstanding CD. However, some of the disparate elements make the CD never wracking by its end--rather than relaxing or pleasantly energizing.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-05-13

The prior reviews built up expecations not met by the actual music. I like the other guys better. I gave this album to my daughter who will listen to anything.

4 out of 5 stars a great imitation.......2007-04-16

This CD is a thorougly enjoyable hybrid of mystical Gregorian chant and sensual electronic rhythms. Many previous reviews have compared Magna Canta with Enigma, which is certainly justified. However, the comparison is really only applicable to Enigma's first album (MCMXC A.D.). That being said, Magna Canta's style is strikingly similar to what you will find on MCMXC. In fact, If I heard the songs Ritmo and Alleluia (two of the songs on "Enchanted Spirits") without knowing the artist, I would swear that Enigma created them.

So as you can see, Magna Canta is not really breaking any new ground here. However, the music on this album is very high quality. It's one of the few CD's where I don't mind listening to the whole thing over and over. If you like music that is spiritual, mysterious, sensuous and timeless, this CD is for you. Thanks to Magna Canta for picking up where Enigma left off.

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-03-08

I thoroughly enjoy this CD. I've recently gotten into music that combines the classical (or, in this case, medieval) with techno, and this album does not disappoint. My only complaint, and the reason it doesn't get that fifth star, is that the techno is somewhat un-inventive. Take for comparison the electronic beats in albums by Paul Schwartz or Deep Forest and you'll easily see the difference. That said, it is still great fun to listen to.

This is one of the best albums of mariachi music I ever owned, I carry it with me to play it on the subway, and in my car. Most of the songs are popular, but it's still wonderful to listen. thier intereptation of Besame Mucho is still the best, and this song has been sang by almost everybody who can sing. I especially love La Malaguena, Las Mananitas and Cucurrucu Paloma. This CD is a delight, a must have for evert music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-12-09

If you are only going to own one CD of Mariachi music, then do your pocketbook a favor & purchase this CD. Its the best CD put out by the 4th Generation line-up, as it contains the best versions of most of the music interpreted here (La Malaguena, Son de la Negra, etc.,). As a side note, Vargas has issued several CDs since this one that have not made it through the distribution channels in the U.S. or Mexico! One of these albums, Penas-Desenganos y Amores, has the version of "El Cascabel" from the PBS special "Mariachi Spirit of Mexico" It is a real shame/loss if the greatest Mariachi cannot get distributed. You can listen to clips from that CD on the Marichi Vargas website www.mariachivargas.com.mx - if you enjoy it then please join me in sending an e-mail to Amazon customer service to request the CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is cool music.......2007-03-07

I love this music. I'm not good at describing music. But, it is calm, yet not all the time, it has a good beat. It's deep. Just buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Moody sanctuary.......2007-01-07

Magna Canta made a moody CD with Santuary. But playing it completely, it is very much of the same. Nevertheless, it is worth buying if you like this genre

5 out of 5 stars Deep and atmospheric music in the groove-chant tradition.......2006-10-02

Ranging in tone from darkly mysterious to moving and uplifting, "Sanctuary" is similar in style to Magna Canta's previous album, "Enchanted Spirits," but as seems to be the trend with most groups in this genre, has lost a little something in transition from one recording to the next. Although there is still vocal chanting in "Sanctuary," there seems to be less of it. Since there's no mention of a choir in the liner notes, nor of choral works being sampled, I'm not sure if Junior Deros and Ray Frederico are simply singing and perhaps overdubbing their own vocals or what. The voices are mostly male or falsetto-counter tenor in nature, and certainly hold their own with a deep, rich tone. But they're not as full or affecting as a real chorus of singers. That being said, the compositions are still engaging for the most part--energetic and well-crafted. They're varied enough in structure to make for interesting listening or dancing, although occasionally they become a little repetitive or derivative. Like Enigma before them, but not quite so exotically, Magna Canta branches out into a wider world of song in this album, incorporating Russian lyrics in track #1 and Japanese lyrics in track #5, penned by Ludmila Kloss and Marianne Shimisu respectively. In fact, track #1, appropriately enough called "Russia," is probably my favorite one on the album, with a simple, sober but affecting melody that sounds like it would make a great movie soundtrack theme. The last selection, Sequentia, is cool too, utilizing a polyphonic triple meter common in Latin chant but not usually heard in this genre. It is quite effective nonetheless, not to mention affecting. Drawing from a different aspect of sacred medieval music than unmetered monophonic chanting, such fusion would make for many other interesting compositions should anyone care to take up that torch (Hint, hint! Twenty-first century School of Notre Dame, anyone?) One suggestion for future releases: the phrase "Magna Canta" translates as "great songs." Great songs deserve great choirs to sing them. Bring back the chorus! If you enjoy listening to Magna Canta, try also the work of Lesiem, Era, Enigma and Amethystium, as well as "Vision" by Richard Souther and Hildegard von Bingen.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting ..........2006-01-13

A wonderful follow up album by Magna Canta. These guys are here to stay. All tracks are very nicely done, but there are some tracks that are outstanding:

1. Russia: This track has a terrific start. The first few seconds of this track can justify the purchase of the entire album. Terrific electronic cadence music with masterful gregorian chants. The arrangement is very well layered and textured. Wonderful.

2. Kyrie: This track seems like a perfect mix of 2 tracks that are masterfully merged into one another. You get hooked to one and the other one emerges quickly from behind and captures your attention.

3. Pater Noster: This is a very peaceful track. Almost like a beautiful selfless prayer with very uplifting electronic music. The chants will stir your soul and in an emotional moment draw a tear as well. I really liked the way the track just fades away.

4. The best track on the CD. The music slowly appears from the yonder. The mind conjures rhythmic floating images that swirl all around you and the chants feel like tufts of fresh air on your face.

6. Japan: Haunting start to the track. Very creative mix of Gregorian and Japanese chants.

7. Lux Lucies: Keeps getting better. A very well layered track that will take you on a tranquail sonic journey. Awesome.

8. In Excelsiss Deo: Stunning: Distant percussions that will give you goose bumps. This track blurs the track between electronic, Gregorian and techno music. Irresistible dance music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Easy Listening and Soothing Sounds.......2007-03-12

Magna Canta is truly one of the best sounds I have heard in awhile. I look for this kind of music as it is inspirational to my creativeness and my well being. Easy listening and harmonious sounds that captivate the spirit. I will be looking for more sounds of Magna Canta in the future and similar music of it's kind.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-01-15

it was very good music consisting of mostly gregorian chants. very nice even for exercise

5 out of 5 stars EXACTLY what I was looking for. Better than Enigma!.......2006-07-21

This is very well-done, blending beats and electronica with beautiful gregorian chanting. Exactly what I was looking for! It's darker, moodier and more varied than Enigma. Better in my opinion.
The cover is beautiful, eerie and mystical.

5 out of 5 stars For Fans and Newcomers!.......2005-10-04

I only recently began listening to Magna Canta, but I've always been drawn to groovy, mystic sounds and Gregorian chant. No doubt I'd probably heard Magna Canta before, but as is sometimes the way, you hear something and don't know who's the artist or what's the title or annoying things like that. Then the song haunts you for days after, and you either find out what it is or it goes in the mental file referred to as "Things to Find Out at a Later Date".

This 2-disc CD is awesome! The music itself is superb...the chants mix beautifully with the music, the beats lend the music a certain depth and life that's nearly addictive, and the Latin really helps transport you to a different realm of listening pleasure. Some of the tracks are more suitable to relaxing than others, but it's all great stuff. I love to pop in one of these CD's when I'm driving or cleaning or even exercising. The music helps take your mind off the monotony of daily tasks.

The CD's themselves do contain a number of tracks from Magna Canta's previously released material, and I didn't know this when I bought the album. I'm not disappointed, however. The remixes are great, and the chants blend so well that you never really get tired of listening, especially if you want some "mystic dance club" music without having to leave home.

Overall, this is certainly a worthy CD set to have in one's collection. For longtime fans of Magna Canta, you won't mind having a few repeats of songs in your library...and for newcomers, this is a terrific introduction to this genre and this group. Unless you don't like chant or mystic groovy dance beats, you can't go wrong with this CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Magna Canta - Mystical Chant.......2005-07-08

I am a big fan of gregorian chants and thanks to artists like Enigma, Era, Delerium & Lesiem there is no shortage of this beautiful intoxicating genre of music. Then came along the german group Magna Canta which blew away the competition. Only Era now stands toe to toe in competition with this wonderfully arranged vocalist group. This album release 'Gregorian Mystics' is a 2 CD compilation with 12 songs on each album. Mainly the songs are from older album versions of Magna Canta but for the loyal fans there are a few previously unreleased B-Sides and remixes of a few songs.

CD1 consists of 'Silentium' and 'Cantandus' as previously unreleased. The rest of the songs are old songs from other albums. But listening to the hit song 'Ritmo' and 'Agnus Dei' never gets tiring. The chants meld well with the synths, bass and sometimes techno-dance feel of the songs.

CD2 was my personal favourite with more B-Sides like 'Himawari', 'Close To Heaven and the remixed hit song 'Hymne' (Deep Spiritual Mix)which was actually a great remix. Several of these remixed songs are starting to find their way on nightclub's DJ playlistings.

This is a must buy for any serious gregorian chant fan. The listener shall not be disappointed by the diverse and yet entertaining chant mixed with dance style sounds on many of the songs. Whether you wanna dance and party or rest and relax, there are songs on both CD's for both of these things.

    3 out of 5 stars A So-So Collection of Diamanda's Live Recordings.......2006-10-11

This collection paled in comparison to Diamanda's 1998 release "MALEDICTION and PRAYER", which I can listen to non-stop. There are bright moments in this cd, which being in the intro for "BABY'S INSANE"(which she penned), she says how a critic gave her a bad review on this song while performing it in San Francisco. She had me giggling. She reprises three songs that appear on some of her other cd's such as: "SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN," "MY WORLD IS EMPTY WITHOUT YOU," and "I PUT A SPELL ON YOU". I'm assuming some of the other songs are her interpretations of blues songs. My picks in order if you want more of "singing" Diamanda as opposed to speaking, shreiking, moaning etc., performance artist Diamanda are as follows: "MALEDICTION and PRAYER", "THE SINGER", "LA SERPENTA CANTA", her rocking out album with JOHN PAUL JONES- "THE SPORTING LIFE" and "DEFIXIONES, WILL and TESTAMENT."

    1 out of 5 stars pooptacular.......2005-08-03

    This sucks, totally cliche.

I'm not sure if you realize that there are plenty of more talented people that have been doing this for longer.

But whatever, listen to what you choose.

    4 out of 5 stars fysical music.......2004-09-30

How often does it occur that you encounter music that gives you very real, fysical reactions? Like fright, or unease, or some other strong affect resounding in the body. Listen to Galas, and listen to it with all of your body. Don't play this in the background, while studying or cooking - this needs all of your attention. It will repulse you, fright you, or excite you, but doubtlessly, you will be 'moved'.

4 stars instead of 5 because the CD was - in the Netherlands at least - fairly expensive as a double CD, for which I see no precise reason.

5 out of 5 stars The Voice Summoning The Spirit--incredible live perfomances.......2004-08-23

First off let me just say IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! I ordered the import version from Amazon UK last year upon its intial release. Now that it's available stateside, don't delay buying it now! Diamanda Galas' last album release was Malediction and Prayer from 1998, so having LA SERPENTA CANTA on a double-cd set is a prayer answered. The only negative associated with it is the format: two discs that could easily have fit onto one. The running time for Disc One is just 38:52, while Disc Two is 41:14.

Now that I have all that out of the way, let's talk about the performances heard on this set. Taken from several venues spanning a time period from September '99 up to November 2002, these are among the finest live recordings of any artist I have ever heard. Whoever was responsible for the editing and mixing should be given a round of well-deserved applause. Though the 15 tracks were recorded in different acoustical environments, the sound quality is superb. Of course you have to overlook the various background noises found on a truly live recording: coughing, murmuring from the audience, as well as the clink of dishes and silverware from the Joe's Pub venue. Once you're past the first listening, it only enhances the overall mood that the performances are authentic and not re-recorded in a studio after the fact, like on many classical-music recordings.

The Intro on Disc One is very enthusiastic applause for Diamanda as she enters the performance hall, then it segues into the first song, AINT NO GRAVE CAN HOLD MY BODY DOWN, which will send chills down your spine every time you play it. This is followed by BURNING HELL, a piece that opens with a long piano overture that unfolds into Diamanda's mournful rendition of John Lee Hooker's classic. Diamanda's original BABY'S INSANE follows and at the end, she offers up a lighter moment criticizing a journalist who gave her a "very very bad review." She then dives into Hank Williams' I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY, which she dedicates to Aileen Wournos. After hearing it you may feel like crying or just sit quietly with your head hung low. The intensity of her singing, particularly on this track, is nothing less than heartrending. LONELY WOMAN by Ornette Coleman is the only song with no real lyrics: it's just Diamanda's voice ululating and wailing for several minutes through a world of torment and despair. Closing out disc one is FRENZY, which has to be heard to be believed.

Moving on to disc two, BLUE SPIRIT BLUES by Spencer Williams is also intense like I'M SO LONESOME, but for different reasons. It's just one of those things you can't describe very well: every time I listen to LA SERPENTA, I hear a song in a different way or notice another nuance in Diamanda's voice or phrasing. From Malediction & Prayer, MY WORLD IS EMPTY WITHOUT YOU gets a wholly diffent pianistic treatment and the vocals are even more sorrowful than her M&P version. Loved this! Then, I PUT A SPELL ON YOU follows with a completely different sound than what was found on The Singer--again a new version to fall in love with. Then, AT THE DARK END OF THE STREET (also from The Sporting Life like Baby's Insane) gets a beautiful and new sound. Then, DANCING IN THE DARK knocks you out with what I think is one of her most unusual arrangements for a traditional song (traditional as in a piece that's not like Vena Cava, or Schrei X, etc.) Following this is DEAD CAT ON A LINE which has a dark humor all its own. Coming to the next-to last track is SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN (which was first recorded on The Singer) but gets a richer sound and more nuanced reading on the concert version heard here. Finally, Diamanda closes LSC with a reprise of BURNING HELL, which sounds completely different in tone from the version heard on disc one. It's taken from an earlier performance.

When you are listening to LSC, some of the vocal effects (which are minimal) may remind the listener of Schrei X or Vena Cava. These effects enhance the mood of the lyrics, rather than being a distraction or distortion of it. Like any perfomance of hers, the listener is left to experience it on his or her own, forming their own impression of how they feel or think while listening to and being absorbed by all of it. This sounds maybe vague, but any longtime devotee will know exactly what I'm talking about!

"Catalan poet and singer Joan Manuel Serrat is the kind of pan-Latin cultural giant who can make the Anglo-American global mainstream feel a touch provincial. You and I may never have heard of him, but the mere mention of the Franco-defying veteran balladeer's name was enough to bring out the cream of the Cuban crop for this gorgeous tribute album." -- The Daily Telegraph

      5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2006-02-17

I'm a big fan of Trio da Paz, and when I saw this album for the first time, I bought it immediately. Kenny Baron, is of course one of the all time great jazz pianists, and lends his musicianship wonderfully to the always great brazilian trio. The first cut of the album alone is worth the price of the whole thing. Buy this now if you love jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Just what you are looking for.......2004-09-05

There can never be enough Jobim redone if it is redone well. However, you may be thinking to yourself, a recent convert to Bossa Nova, as I was when I bought this CD, "What's new? Who is pushing the frontiers or at least doing something original?" If that is you, this is your CD. This CD is also for you if you are thinking, "Hmm, a reknowned jazz pianist tries a new genre...must be good." My favorite piece on the album is "Clouds." In general, the album remains one of my favorite in latin jazz. If you are a Trio da Paz fan, or Kenny Barron fan, everything you expect.

5 out of 5 stars Magical meeting of jazz giants.......2003-12-06

It is true that Kenny Barron is among the top echelon of modern jazz pianists. He was Stan Getz's last pianist, and the music they produced (People Time and The Lost Sessions: Bossas and Ballads) is among Getz's finest. He lead the band Sphere, a brilliant group interpreting and building on the music of Thelonius Sphere Monk (hence, the name). He came up playing With Dizzy Gillespie and Yusef Lateef. Yet, many of his efforts as leader seem to fall short, to lack something. Except when he places himself in a somewhat alien context, as on Swamp Sally, his brilliant disc with Mino Cinelu (country/blues/jazz), and here, matched with Trio da Paz (Brazilian). These encounters, where he is playing in the presence of a deeply established world jazz vibe, bring out the very best in him and enable his epic jazz pianism to shine brightest.

Trio da Paz benefits as well. Having a world class musician playing piano (an instrument not part of the trio) nudges them into a greater freedom of expression and rhythmic drive than I've heard from them before. Add Valtinho on percussion and Anne Drummond of flute, and you have a much richer sound signature than usual for a Trio da Paz disc.

The electricity sparks from the very first number, "Zumbi," a driving composition by Barron (5 of 8 are his, the rest, one each from the Trio). There's a very attractive controlled wildness here, reminiscent of some of Egberto Gismonti's early period music, just after he emerged from three years of studing the aboriginal music of Northern Brazil. That vibe continues with "Paraty," a number from bassist Nilson Matta that has almost become a Brazilian jazz standard and which features an astounding solo from Romero Lubambo, surely the reigning Brazilian guitar champ, as well as a very attractive solo from Barron. "Bachiao," from the pen of Lubambo, has a distinct Villa Lobos feel, and brings out perhaps the leader's finest piano work; indeed Barron's and Lumbabo's breakneck melodic doubling amazes. Drummond also knocks off a quite remarkable flute solo on this number. But my favorite is drummer Dudaka da Fonseca's "Dona Maria," also featured on his brilliant disc "Samba Jazz Fantasia," bursting with complex rhythms and an eminently hummable melody. Da Fonseca's drum solo is pure brilliance--tasty, alive with energy, and smartly succinct.

The ballads, "Clouds" and "Until Then," also stand out, providing a welcome change of pace from the uptempo numbers. Barron has always struck me as an accomplished ballad player, and he confirms that view by his performances here.

All in all, a great disc, one of the finest world jazz performances I've ever heard. Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars An ideal pairing.......2002-12-20

Kenny Barron is simply one of the finest pianists in jazz-- an opinion confirmed by his annual rankings at or near the top of the Downbeat Readers and Critics polls. This record pairs Barron with Brazilian musicians Trio de Paz, one of his students -- flutist Anne Drummond, and percussionist Valtinho.

Instead of rehashing the usual Jobim tunes, the record showcases new compositions by Barron and members of the Trio that are rhythmically exciting and offer plenty of space for soloing both on the record and in their live shows (don't miss them if they come your way).

Barron is as wonderful as always and the members of Trio de Paz make ideal partners -- especially guitarist Romero Lubambo.
