World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music, Vol. 3: Scotland

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
While there's certainly a whole lot more to the music of Scotland, we all want to hear the bagpipes, so it's a nice touch that Alan Lomax's exploration of the Scottish tradition starts with a brief rant by the Glasgow Police Band. This is followed by a solo song by one of the great voices of the nation, Ewan McColl, who contributes a number of traditional songs to the collection. Other a cappella songs include "Glenlogie" by John Strachan, Blanche Wood's "Portnockie Girl," and some "diddling songs" by Hamish Henderson. More informal are a track by a community band and singing group recorded live in the streets of Selkirk, some remarkable singing from a group of women in Glasgow, and a church choir in Dormach. The album is divided pretty equally between songs from the Lowlands and the Highlands, 43 often-brief pieces that preserve the old music in time. Notes by Lomax have been updated (and toned down from Lomax's usual overly effusive style) by Hamish Henderson and Margaret Bennett, and include Gaelic text and English translations where necessary. --Louis Gibson

Unlike most of the CDs in the World Library of Folk and Primitive Music series, which were recorded in the field by Alan Lomax or his associates, the tracks on Romania were taken from the collection in the archive of the Folklore Institute in Bucharest. Consequently, the selections range over a much wider time span than other volumes in the series, which tend to focus on the varieties of music found at a specific time and place. The earliest recording here dates back to 1934 and features a medley of dance tunes played on fiddle. The latest is a long ballad recorded in 1958. The years in between include recordings of ritual hunting songs from Transylvania, a song to end a drought sung by a group of Gypsy children in Wallachia, and a fanfare played on an alpenhorn by a 19-year-old musician from the Carpathian Mountains. Even though the recordings were made over a long period of time and with equipment of varying degrees of sophistication, the sound quality is uniformly fine. As with the other CDs in the series, each of the tracks is well annotated in the accompanying booklet. --Michael Simmons

Clearly has great historic value, good quality recording!

5 out of 5 stars Romanian Village Music for Folklore Enthusiasts.......2002-04-06

I was *not* disappointed. I can listen to this CD for hours: raw instruments and natural voices playing unfamiliar rhythms and tunes with "other worldy" sounds: evocative of a more natural life! It contains a vast expanse of village music, from throughout different regions of Romania. The music is "authentic" in that it is "folk music": i.e., songs & instruments played by villagers & sung by villagers... Nothing against learning via lessons --- however, let's face it: when you sing and play from the heart, it is quite different than reading notes in a book and repeating patterns ... This is a collector's item!!! I was enormously *pleased* it was reissued for our listening pleasure. (BTW, if you want to play along with clarinet or sax - go listen to Greek music. Lots of room for improvsiation there ...) Erika Borsos (erikab93)

1 out of 5 stars Interesting... but not recommended unless -.......2002-02-01

I played this CD right after picking up my saxophone, which I hadn't done in a few years. The first track and I got along fine; in fact we sounded the same: unschooled, rough.

This CD would be great for a scholar of music interested in eastern European folk music.

Me? I listened to it straight through, once. The liner notes were a great insight in to the background of the songs and musicians. I won't give it a second listen though.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the word "Primitive" fool you...........2002-01-11

Don't let the word "Primitive" fool you....the instruments may be "primitive", but the performances are most certainly not.

I tried to purchase this and another cd using a gift card. I got an email saying that they would have to be shipped separately. A week later I got an email saying that they were "undeliverable"! Since I didnt think there was going to be a problem when I first placed the order I trashed the gift card code # so I lost the $ that I used for the purchase. So to sum up- No cds no gift card, thanks Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful and historical.......2001-11-17

This CD is just about perfect. In fact, it's only defect is also an advantage. Alan Lomax attempted to cram every corner of Scotland's musical tradition onto a single CD. This is a monumental task, and only partly successful.

On the one hand, pretty much every corner of Scotland's musical tradition is represented. Police bands, boy's choirs, professional folk singers, pub carousers, kid's jump rope games, jacobite battle songs, love songs, port-a-buel, waulking songs, English and Gaelic all find there way onto this CD. It truly is amazing how many songs and styles are represented. What a musical country!

On the other hand, "packed" is what you feel like after listening. The songs move quickly from one to the other, with little or no space. A jaunty accordion tune moves into a soulful Gaelic ballad without a breath, then into a peppy English tune with full choir and then into a drunken military rant. It can be a little too much to take in on one sitting.

Still, it is hard to complain about this musical treasure. For Scottish folk music, there is no equal to this CD.

Made in recording sessions by Alan Lomaz and Seamus Ennis in 1951, this was one of the first comprehensive surveys of the folk music of Ireland. Lomax and Ennis went from village to town in western Ireland, recording professional and amateur singers and musicians in their homes and community places. The songs are familiar, since so many of them have been learned by more generations via these recordings, and include classics like "I'll Go No More A' Rovin," "Whiskey in the Jar," "The Lark in the Morning," and dozens of others. Aside from Ennis, who contributes a fair number of songs himself, the names of the performers will not be too familiar. It's a straightforward, honest brand of Irish music (not "Celtic") that focuses on the tunes and stories, delivered with quiet grace or raucous joy, untouched by fad. Accordions, fiddles, and piano are the instruments most likely heard here, but the real gems are the solo singers and storytellers, whose voices still ring true because they were so real, so personal. The booklet includes Ennis's original recording notes, a new introduction to put the music in contemporary perspective, and Lomax's original effusive and overromanticized commentary. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars A rare find for Irish music enthusiasts.......2004-11-09

This is Irish music BEFORE all the Riverdance hype came about, this is Irish music in its realest and rawest from. Hearing performers sing and speak native Gaelic is a real treat, and the songs are a real challenge to listen to. This is NOT pub music by any means, but rather true music with real stories behind it. The only thing I would have liked to see on this album is more diversity: most of the songs were recorded in Co. Cork or Co. Donegahy, however I can't complain since my family are Corkers themselves... If you like this album I would STRONGLY recommend Alan Lomax's Primitive Music album from Spain as there are stark similarities between the two types of music (ever hear the thoery that the Celts were originally from Spain?... Wink.)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Singing.......2002-05-11

Fantastic traditional unaccompanied singing from Johnny McDonagh, Colm Keane and Sean Jeaic McDonagh. Johnny McDonagh's version of "Morrissey and the Russian Sailor" is the finest "come all ye" I have ever heard recorded and Colm Keane singing "Soldier, Soldier" is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of a wide variety of styles.......2002-05-11

Another impressive release in Rounder's fabulous Alan Lomax series... The very nature of this album's title, a hangover from the 1950s field recording era, indicates both the scope and the drawbacks of this disc. It is a sweeping overview of Indian classical and folkloric styles, and as such it is alternately delightful and disappointing. Gathered by French ethnomusicologist Alain Danielou, these well-produced recordings capture many vibrant performances in a variety of styles. Yet as any fan of Indian music will tell you, two-to-three minutes is simply not enough time for most songs to properly develop, and while these are excellent examples of the music, they are not complete performances. But seen as a guide post to steer you into deeper exploration of Indian music, this is a very, very nice record. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great if you're studying the subject!.......2003-04-14

I needed some field study recordings for an ethnomusicology seminar I was preparing. All of Lomax's recordings fit that bill. However, if you're looking for something for pleasurable listening, well...you might fight this a little rough around the edges! Remember: these recordings are the real thing: untrained musicians and singers, not always singing in tune, not always playing in tune. In addition, the recordings are done using older technologies (between the 30s and the 60s).That, of course has its charm, but I think I would recommend it primarily to students of ethnomusicology.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-03-30

Half very "celtic" sounding instrumentals and half very strange but wonderful vocal performances... just wonderful. If you are interested in the European "roots" music, this is the real deal. I bought it on a whim, having no idea really what to expect, but it is awesome. Sorry I am not too good at explaining about this sort of music, as I have little else to compare it to.

The music on this recording cleebrates some of the remarkable styles available to the Church at the dawn of a third millennium. With diverse choral music sections that draw from African rhythms, Irish tunes, Spanish ballads, and Native American songs.

Steve Warner and the Folk Choir strike again, showing why they're so popular throughout America, England and Ireland. They have a dynamic style that has never been more apparent than on this album. Anyone who appreciates good liturgical music should not be without this album. Absolutely incredible songs sung absolutely beautifully. One of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Soul-filling, kinetic energy.......2000-05-27

When I was at school at ND, I used to look forward to 11:45 Mass on Sundays -- primarily because of the music. The music of the ND Folk Choir can literally lift you from your seat, make tears come to your eyes and infuse a feeling of sweet joy in your Soul. This CD has two of my favorite songs: the African Gloria and Jina Bwana.

Anyone who comes to my house, gets to hear this CD on Sundays. I played this CD for my father who sings in a choir in Houston and he was so taken by it he wants to get his choir to sing some of these songs. It is kinetic energy at its best.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2000-02-22

You enter the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of The University of Notre Dame for 11:45 mass and expect the usual "Smells and Bells" of standard church-going fare. Instead, you are rivited to your seat as the Notre Dame Folk Choir performs music that truly grabs the attention of God Herself. I was fortunate enough to hear the African Glory to God live on Easter Sunday 1999, and am eagerly waiting for the CD to arrive so that I can recapture that sense of true joy. What a treat to have this incredible music available whenever I need it!

5 out of 5 stars Crossroads of Praise-Notre Dame Folk Choir.......2000-01-18

Awesome music, singing and directing-Notre Dame really knows how to pick 'em!

The recent events in the former Yugoslavia give the music on volume five of the World Library of Folk and Primitive Music a special air of poignancy. Peter Kennedy, who was an associate of Alan Lomax, recorded all of the tracks at a folk festival in 1951, at a time when the Communist government believed it could forge a single national identity by showing the similarities between the various regional folk cultures. To that end, they gathered the best village musicians from all over what was then Yugoslavia and presented them in a series of concerts. Kennedy realized that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and recorded dozens of performers including ballad singers, tamburica players, choirs, and dance bands. All of the music here is of the highest quality, although some of the recordings from the stage are somewhat muted. This two-CD set includes a well-annotated 20-page booklet that features both the original notes from the 1954 LP version as well as corrections and additions that reflect recent scholarship. Although much of the music here will be primarily of interest to ethnomusicologists, there is still plenty here for the casual listener to enjoy. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Village Music Recorded Live.......2001-11-11

This CD is a historical recording of the *best* *authentic* *live* Yugoslavian music that can be heard anywhere! It was recorded at a folk festival where village musicians and dancers from many regions of Yugoslavia gathered: Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, & other areas. They participated in this event disregarding their ethnic & political differences. The music and dancing brought unity and peace - there was no indication of the explosive changes the future would bring . It includes unique instruments and vocalizations along with descriptions of the song and background information about the music and region. The songs, dances and music are "from the people and by the people" no finer definition and representation of folk music anywhere. Although, I have heard that some of the "intellectual" descriptions in the liner notes are not accurate (this from ethnics who originated from the areas represented), never-the-less there is no doubt that it was live music and a live festival which was recorded "on the spot". A great sample of beautiful authentic village sounds! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

With the rise of another generation of English folk musicians like Eliza Carthy reviving again the interest in traditional English music, there's always a need to look back a few generations to see where the songs come from. In the seemingly endless reissues of the Alan Lomax recordings from the '50s and '60s there are treasures to be found, and his field trips to England, Ireland, and Scotland offer a lot of musical bounty. This set was made in cooperation with Peter Kennedy and the BBC, and offers a wealth of songs that were on the verge of being lost to the very mediums that preserved them, the gramophone and the radio. Lomax and Kennedy scoured the nation in 1951, finding the singers, accordionists, and fiddlers who still played the old songs, informally at home and professionally at dances and clubs, and made sure they were not forgotten. While the songs are familiar to fans of revivalists like Carthy and the previous generation like Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, here we get the pure, unadulterated tales of country life and love. --Louis Gibson
