In the beginning there was the voice. And it was good. This anthology of great singers plucked from Peter Gabriel's Real World label demonstrates that it really is a large world after all--one in which overtone-rich, didgeridoo-like Tuvan throat singing can coexist with Indipop chanteuse Sheila Chandra's dexterous vocal percussion. Real World's reputation for sumptuous production is secured by tracks on which the vocals are almost secondary to the effects and beats (e.g., the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Gabriel and Bengal's Paban Das Baul with Sam Mills). Plenty of unadulterated vocal grain, however, may be found in the differing ensemble styles of the Martenitsa Choir (Balkan music from Australia!), Moscow's Dmitry Pokrovsky Ensemble, and Georgia's Tsinandali Choir. Africa both old (Tanzania's Hukwe Zawose, Kenya's Ayub Ogada) and new (Tanzania's Remmy Ongala, the Congo's Papa Wemba) sounds less foreign than the haunting Norwegian fusion of joik singer Mari Boine. Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Approaching the voice as an instrument, British-born Indian Sheila Chandra brings an expansive, timeless quality to this collection of improvised songs based on ragas and modern folk music. Most of the tracks, outside of the drone, are unadorned--as is Chandra's pretty voice, simple in its low tone and unaffected in vocal style. Still, Chandra travels to expansive places, reliving her days as Monsoon's lead singer on "Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean." Though Chandra revisits British and Celtic music, her voice is at its strongest when borrowing from traditional Indian vocal technique and ragas. "Bhajan" is a soothing hymn with drone as are "Sacred Stones" and "Om Namaha Shiva," proving Chandra has indeed succeeded in connecting to ancestral voices for a lovely, meaningful album. --Karen K. Sheila Chandras music on the "Weaving my Ancestors Voices" is difinitive in its impact. It is unforgettable as the musical manifestation of a beautiful history of voice and sound.

As an artist i use music to paint to and i find this particularly atmospheric and evocative without jarring the soundscape. Meditative and contemplative with universal appeal.

Certainly defined for me as one of her great new creations. for all musical tastes.

Sheila Chandra is one of my favorites. Her voice is so smooth and rich. The execution of each note is right in tune. The bols she sings is very interesting, not a favorite of mine, but I do find it amazing that someone can sing like that. If you purchase this CD, I think you'll be pleased.

A Voice To Be Reckoned With.......2003-08-17

First, let me say that if you prefer your world music with strong instrumentation over vocals, then this is not the album for you. Sheila Chandra takes her listener's on a musical voyage using almost nothing but her versatile, compelling voice. The instrumentation is made up mostly of drones, and even that is minimal. But if you are a fan of voice, or a cappala work, you will dig this album.
Chandra lives up to the title of this disc by weaving eclectic vocal styles from various traditions together, sometimes on the same track, as on the so-so Dhyana and Donalogue. The stronger tracks include Nana/The Dreaming, The Enchantment, and the totally inspired weaving together of Ever So Lonely/Eyes/Ocean. And as a previous reviewer noted, the two Speaking In Tongues tracks have to be heard atleast once, but after that, they really are skippable (thank God for programmable CD players) as they don't offer much in way of asthetic enjoyment.
So all in all, the album is hit and miss. It really works best as background music, for relaxation or while surfing the 'net. Of course, Sheila's best was yet to come on ABoneCroneDrone, but you can hear the seeds of that work being planted here on this somewhat experimental disc.

I purchased this album after hearing Sheila's work on several Makyo albums and because I loved Sacred stones ( it is also on the Trance Planet compilations). This is a great album, running the gamut from Indian vocal Ragas to an amazing blend of Indian and Celtic sounds. As much as I love this album, I wish it was not so varied. It jumps back and forth in tone and tempo which makes it hard to use for mood or meditation. Shifting from raga to ambient tone it a bit jarng either way you go. Still a fantastic album and worth owning.

Good CD.......2002-06-27

Sheila Chandra is a good artist that hasn't got her due. Her vocal skills are comparable to Enya and yet she is nowhere to be found on the airwaves...even on world music and alternative stations.

excellent companion if you are learning to play the recorder.......2004-05-05

I came to this CD after buying the sheetmusic with the same title in order to learn to play the recorder. (I want to learn since my 5 year old daughter is learning the piano and I want to be able to accompany her.) I was happy to get the CD and hear how the pieces are intended to be played. Actually my favorite tunes (some of them are actually very catchy) are performed with the shawm, forerunner to the oboe. I had to find this out from a google search, since little information about the instruments are included with the liner notes, not even which instrument plays on which track. I can't even pronounce some of the names of the instruments. As far as the recording quality goes, yes it has a low signal, so you have to turn the volume way up; but once this is done, I hear no backround noise, hiss etc. Anyway, a great way to learn the recorder, sure beats nursery rhymes.

Good Performances, Bad Becording.......2003-02-25

This was my first introduction to music of the Middle Ages -- I purchased it to broaden my musical experience. The musicians and singers provide fine performances. However, the sound recording is very poor -- an occaisional pop is heard, as though it was recorded from an LP. Also, the signal level is too low (especially for a supposedly DDD recording). Increasing the volume makes the background noise annoyingly noticable along with a rumbling sound (as though from a turntable). Since, as another reviewer has observed, there are better collections available, I do not recommend purchasing this recording.

good effort, but..........2001-08-09

...this is hardly one of the best CDs out there. Those who think so have obviously not listened widely enough. I suppose its popularity stems from its title, which gives it away as an easy introduction to the period. Multiple preferable CDs exist for each of the areas it surveys: medieval dance (Istanpitta I and II), Cantigas de Santa Maria (multiple releases under that title), Llibre Vermell (the Sarband release; The Black Madonna), Minnesang (Wanderers' Voices), and trouvere/troubadour repertoire (too many). The bottom line: nice intro, but unnecessary if you want to do more than graze the surface of available talent.

Lively medieval song.......2000-08-17

I love early music, but some performers approach it so solemnly they take the life out of it. Sonus is one of those rare early music groups that actually sound like they have fun playing. They improvise brilliantly, the vocals by Hazel Ketchum are natural sounding rather than operatic, and their taste in material is wonderful. Hearing them, you know why people 700 years ago liked listening to music.

At least twice a week lately in fact :-) I find myself fascinated with music of this era and I am very glad I got this album. If you like early music please give the clips a listen and I think you will agree this album is worth buying!

The liner notes contain the lyrics in both the language sung and an english translation. This is handy for folks like me who only know english and want to know exactly what is being sung :-)

In the beginning there was the voice. And it was good. This anthology of great singers plucked from Peter Gabriel's Real World label demonstrates that it really is a large world after all--one in which overtone-rich, didgeridoo-like Tuvan throat singing can coexist with Indipop chanteuse Sheila Chandra's dexterous vocal percussion. Real World's reputation for sumptuous production is secured by tracks on which the vocals are almost secondary to the effects and beats (e.g., the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Gabriel and Bengal's Paban Das Baul with Sam Mills). Plenty of unadulterated vocal grain, however, may be found in the differing ensemble styles of the Martenitsa Choir (Balkan music from Australia!), Moscow's Dmitry Pokrovsky Ensemble, and Georgia's Tsinandali Choir. Africa both old (Tanzania's Hukwe Zawose, Kenya's Ayub Ogada) and new (Tanzania's Remmy Ongala, the Congo's Papa Wemba) sounds less foreign than the haunting Norwegian fusion of joik singer Mari Boine. But in the end, it's New York's own Holmes Brothers, gospel-soul singers extraordinaire, who prove that the voice can be all that and more. --Richard Gehr

This is good stuff. My favorite is #6, an Irish singer who does an amazing job. In fact, all artists who participated in this project did wonderfully...I'd never bought an album of world music before, but after hearing this one, I'm going to check out what other titles this label offers. I recommend it.

Give this gem time... it will grow on you.......2005-01-13

I bought this cd on a friend's suggestion. The first time I heard it, I almost threw it away. I turned the player off and went to pick my daughter up at the babysitter's. Upon return, I turned the cd back on, forgetting what was in. My 3 year old daughter's response was incredible. She was mesmerized. She actually started dancing to the music (first time to ever do anything like that) So.... I listened to it a few more times and realized how pure the tones are. These singers are chosen at a young age and undergo extensive training. The results are worth listening to!!

This has now become one of our favorite cds... I highly recommend.
