Rough Guide: The Music of Brazil

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Leave it to the savvy impresarios of Rough Guides (home of the handy travel and discographical reference tomes) to bring armchair backpackers one of the finer single-disc anthologies of Brazilian music on the market. Rather than foolishly trying to encapsulate the stylistic breadth of Latin America's mega-populous country, this 19-song compilation largely covers the lighter, popular regional forms, like the samba and bossa nova of Rio de Janeiro, which, on occasion, surprisingly transcend their inherent cheesiness. Lively accordions and polyrhythmic drums represent the more hip forro and carnival grooves. But the real treats come in fresh Afro-European-American hybrids like Bahian rap ("Charles Anjo 45"), Latin-jazz funk ("Negada da Lapa"), Maranhaon bottleneck blues ("Isso"), an old choro on cavaquinho (mini guitar) and harpsichord ("Carinhoso"), and Marlui Miranda and Uakti's dazzling arrangement of "Tchori Tchori," a traditional fishing tune from the indigenous Jaboti peoples. --Sam Prestianni

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprises........2007-08-07

We are used to Brazilian music in its industrial-strength forms: turbo-charged club stuff, plus a handful of over-hyped bossa nova stars.
All the more reason to welcome this disc, which is full of pleasant surprises.
Predominantly acoustic, and intimate rather than stadium-scale, these performances reveal the wealth of different styles to be found in this vast land.
And they are primarily vocal, from Chico Cesar - whose playful tones are redolent of the late lamented Cuban Ibrahim Ferrer - to the unique timbre of the 89-year-old Bahian legend Dona Edith do Prato, who accompanies her choir by rhythmically scraping a knife across a dinner plate.
The compiler John Armstrong's excellent notes do the essential job of contextualisation; his selection covers all the genres which Western pop-pickers overlook.

5 out of 5 stars perfect guide to samba.......2001-06-08

it's great to encounter a CD that embraces the whole and sometimes vague genre of samba without having to resort to the usual names/artists and clichés. top marks for the inclusion of Zizi Possi's version of O Que É O Que É and the acapella rendition by Luciana Melo of Candeia's O Mar Serenou. Eat your heart out, David Byrne. Contemporary but faithful to the roots.

5 out of 5 stars WOW !!!.......2001-05-28

Rough Guide to Samba is the greatest Samba CD I ever heard ! It is gathering all the sub-styles of Samba. Like guitar only Samba, percussions and voice Samba and even the ones that are played during the Carnaval ! The song from GRC Escola de Samba Vai-Vai won the Carnaval Contest of 1999 ... and it's on this very CD ! Excellent CD, excellent songs, excellent sound, excellent in every ways !!! You gotta own this one.

Hip-hop traveled from the boogie-down Bronx to the black, brown, and beige country of Brazil, where the same themes of violence, Afrocentric pride, and ghetto life are the syncopated soundtracks for millions of poor favela dwellers. This compilation features rappers and turntable specialists from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro who stay true to game and flip the script with their extensions and experiments with the genre. Possemente Zulu's "Sou Negrao" has a call-and-response vocal riff that recalls Naughty by Nature's Hip Hop Hooray, and Thaíde & DJ Hum's "Tempo Bom" samples the R&B classic Mr. Big Stuff. Conversely, Personagens's "No Corpo a Coisa Pega" swings with the samba and Xis's "Us Mano E as Mina" is buoyed by reggae-fied rhythms. From Chico Science's innovative production, to Elza Soares's new-school version of the Tropicalia standard, "Haiti," the Brazilianization of our music continues. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Album Description

The Rough Guide To Brazilian Hip-Hop presents some of the grittier sounds and funkier beats from Brazil's homegrown rappers. Arriving in Brazil with break-dancing and graffiti, the hip-hop movement spread from the main centres of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro across Brazil, and the doors were opened to the national rap movement in the late 1990s. Mixing rap with samba, soul, reggae, bossa nova, acid-jazz, poetry and rock, the tracks featured on The Rough Guide To Brazilian Hip-Hop are a sampling of the most innovative sounds of Brazil's hip-hop generation.

4 out of 5 stars Surreal and shining.......2004-11-17

BRAZILIAN HIPHOP opens with a surreal Beatles-like drone of electronica with echo and repeat, then merges smoothly from scratch echo to the hiphop chants of Se Tu Lutas the Conguistas in 'Somos Nos a Justica'.
You may think a knowledge of Portuguese would be essential to a Brazilian hiphop collection: not so: even without such, BRAZILIAN HIPHOP shines with its blend of Latin foundations and new, modern singers.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but quite fun.......2000-11-28

After seeing a Brazilian percussion band in concert, I became enamored by the Brazilian musical style. I couldn't find a recording by the band (turns out they haven't released anything), so I thought I'd pick up this recording to see what I thought of Brazilian music. It's quite fun. It has a wide range of styles, from what I'd have to call Brazilian rap, to zydeco, to Paul Simon-esque tunes. It's very rich from the percussion side of things. Track 6 bugs me, as the singers voices sound artificially high-pitched. Virtually every other tune is pleasant to listen to. I give it four stars, because I can listen to it over and over in a day, and come back to it the next day and still enjoy it.

As also demonstrated on Putumayo's Brazilian Groove, there are inventive, exciting electronica scenes exploding in cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, where venerable styles like forro, bossa nova, and samba are crossed with and embellished by modern instruments and future beats. Some of the practitioners are classically trained, having studied 2oth-century composers like Edgar Varese and Karlheinz Stockhausen (Fernanda Porto), while others emerged from local hip-hop or DJ collectives (DJ Mystical of Macumbalada.) Even older MPB (musica popular Brasiliera) icons (Claudia Telles) have gotten into the act, either directly or via sampling. But what is most striking about these tracks, aside from their overall quality, is that despite the manipulated voices, crushing bass grooves, and hissing, looping, spacey sonic environments, nobody could possibly miss that they were recorded in Brazil. The passionate love of country that has always characterized Brazilian music still comes through loud and clear. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Far better than average set -- worth checking out!.......2004-05-17

Nice collection! The automatic compatibility of Brazilian bossa and samba with modern electronica has been taken as a given for many years, but the easy assumptions of many mixers -- particularly DJs in the European acid jazz/lounge/dance music cliques -- have not always borne out the synthesis out. This collection stands out amidst the many bland "Brazilian" chill out discs, highlighting several artists with a genuine feel for Brazilian grooves and more to offer than the same old drum'n'bass sound and formless ambient meanderings. Interesting, creative stuff... well worth checking out, particularly as it will lead you to several of Brazil's more innovative modern artists, such as Fernanda Porto, Rebeca Matta and Ramiro Musotto. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good Electric Brazil.......2004-01-01

I had been thinking of picking up Fernand Porto's cd for a while, but just didn't know what to really expect. Seeing as this had a track of hers, figured I'd hear her and a few others.

This compilation is quite good, actually. This is almost like a "modern" update to the Caipirissima compilation from 1999-2000. You have real Brazilian artists, and as such, you get that real Brazilian sound if that makes sense. Even with Suba, he is considered a Paulista and his two cuts here pretty much outline the electronic Brazil sound, as this cd was trying to showcase. The Macumbalada song is pretty sweet (although you can hear it on another fantastic cd called "Brazil After Dark"), as is the funky remix to "Meu Guarda Chuva. Ramiro Musotto kicks in with his trademark effects and very rich sound, vocals and production - albeit it's a rather short track. And yes... the Fernanda Porto song is great!

Not eveyrsong grabbed me however, and some tracks seemed just a bit too over the top so it cannot get the highest ranking. Also, the remake to Samba De Uma Nota So does feature Claudia Telles on vocals, but this version can be found on Bossa Cuca Nova's first cd: "Revisited Classics". The song seems a bit too gimmicky now, but then again the Bossa Cuca Nova version is from 1998-1999. All in all, I'd recommend it. If you're into the breaks, beats and want to know what some of the new electronic sounds are in Brazil, check it out! And if you dig this, check out both of Suba's cds, , Caipirissima and maybe the Brazilian Beats series.

5 out of 5 stars new horizons in the world of electronic music.......2003-11-26

If you like electronic music , this album is for you .
The best artists here are Suba and Ramiro Musotto . They worth the whole album .
