In adapting Chris Van Allsburg's beloved, 1986 Caldecott Medal winning children's Christmas fable, director Robert Zemeckis fused the technologies of live-action motion capture and CGI to an unprecedented degree, producing a visual sensibility that perfectly embodies the netherworld between fantasy and reality that made the book so inviting. Musically, Zemeckis has shrewdly teamed longtime collaborator Alan Silvestri with hit tunesmith Glen Ballard for the original half his soundtrack, then given the rest over to a star-packed tribute to pop Christmas past that includes such timeless chestnuts as Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," "Winter Wonderland" by the Andrew Sisters and Perry Como's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." But the Silvestri/Ballard originals here are the main event, from Tom Hanks' vigorous vocal mugging on the title track and "Hot Chocolate" through the innocent charm of "When Christmas Comes to Town" and the over-the-top, jumpin' jive of Steven Tyler's "Rockin' On Top of the World." Josh Groban's "Believe" overdoes the treacle, but Silvestri's rich choral workouts and underscore suite are grand Hollywood-scaled tributes to the spirit of the season. Also available in a deluxe, illustrated children's book format gift edition that includes an actual encased jingle bell embedded in the cover. --Jerry McCulley

A dream of a boy comes to life in the great book polar express. It is about a great journey to the North Pole to meat Santa Claus. He meats lots of friends and has many good and bad/ dangerous things happen to him.
The main character has brown hair and eyes also he is about 9 of 10. During the book you can tell he is very generous. also he get in to many bad situations like when we dosent belif in santa claus.

We give it a strong 5 stars. Young and old alike will love this movie. Nothing in it is offensive, and it has a great message of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Polar Express is hot.......2007-04-11

I am 57 yet I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and as a result bought the soundtrack. It plays in my Subaru's CD and has songs that remind me of childhood, songs that are fun, and others that make me want to move to the beat. It takes you through the movie and I find myself recalling little scenes from the movie. It was an outstanding performance by Tom Hanks and he puts just the right amount of train conductor and wise sage in the cuts he does on this soundtrack. I am glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Polar Express music CD.......2007-02-06

Quick to receive. Only slight thing I noticed was a crack in the cover but the CD itself was in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2007-02-02

This is the BEST Heart-felt Christmas Story I have seen in years. I have 2 copies of this and still had to watch it everytime it was on TV. AWESOME!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars if you like snow patrol..........2007-05-16

being a big fan of snow patrol's most recent work, i thought it important to listen to their earlier releases. "Songs for polar bears" is a great buy if you are a fan of indie rock. It's a lot diferent than their new material but I think you'll enjoy it either way.

3 out of 5 stars Good Debut.......2007-05-14

If you must buy one Snow Patrol's pre-Final Straw albums, then get Songs for Polar Bears. Keep in mind, though, that while it is much better than When Its All Over We Still Have to Clear Up, it doesn't match the greatness of Final Straw or Eyes Open. However, in Songs for Polar Bears you will hear a good mix of acoustic ballads and heavy rock numbers. The album showed that Snow Patrol had alot of potential and in time would become a very good band, one that mellowed considerably. This is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your taste in music.

In Songs for Polar Bears, you will hear the heaviest rock songs Snow Patrol has ever recorded. When I first played it, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. If you liked Final Straw and Eyes Open, but felt they were too soft, then you just might like Songs for Polar Bears. If you love Snow Patrol for their ballads, don't expect Gary Lightbody to be so gentle in this album. You will definitely hear another side of Snow Patrol in Songs for Polars for Polars. A prime example is "Get Balsamic Vinegar...Quick You Fool" in which Lightbody sings the following:

I'm closer to the truth
she hates being on her own
but f--k her I'm leaving tonight

why should I live this way
when I could be with someone else

I don't want to hurt her feelings
But she's a crazy f--ked up b--ch

A long way from "Run" or "Chasing Cars" isn't it? But not all of the songs are angry. There are ballads, like "Mahogany" and "Fifteen Minutes Old," but most of them are short and acoustic. Other highlights include "Downhill from Here," "Starfighter Pilot," "Make Up," "Velocity Girl," and "One Hundred Things You Should Have Done in Bed." While you're waiting for the next Snow Patrol album, buy Songs for Polar Bears. It has recently been extended to 23 tracks, making it a double album. I recommend this one, but avoid When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up.

1 out of 5 stars bloody awful indie drivel DESERVES NO STARS.......2007-02-03

Its amazing how the same yoofs ended up recording a couple of quite excellent albums several years later but in their obviously extremely sharp learning curve they very sadly dredged out this witless vile intensely pathetic drivel. Its everything sensible mature folks hate and loathe about cliched dreadful indie stuff. NO proper songs, just poorly structured noise that grates almost as badly as any punk rock, thrash metal or hippety hop garbage. This is a complete and utter waste of money!!

5 out of 5 stars Snow Patrol - Songs For Polar Bears.......2007-01-18

Excellent songs from Snow Patrol's first album.

5 out of 5 stars It was just a matter of time.......2006-10-20

Soon this album will be reviewed by all their new fans because, well, it's never too late. The reason why it took Snow Patrol to get popular was because they started off on a small label (Jeepster) and didn't have the exposure they do now. They signed with a huge label and have finally taken off the way it should have been from the start.

They use keyboards, guitars, bass and drums like a garage band with a million great ideas in their head. The only reason it sounds like garage is because that's probably the only money they could afford. Still, the songs are catchy with a great backbeat. You can hear the fun, dreamlike desire they have. Starfighter Pilot comes at you quick with an easy melody and is fun to sing along with.
One Hundred Things You Should Have Done in Bed shows a bit of bitterness and serious tone wrapped up in another poppy gem.
The list goes on and the number of songs is definitely an added bonus.

I remember when I reviewed this album while in college (cheers to you two who reviewed it here) - nobody got it then but it could have been because it was too poppy. This album, while much choppier, is a lot like their new stuff (i.e. Chasing Cars) with a formulated radio-ready feel. The difference is that with the old stuff, you'll find your head bobbing from start to finish. The new has matured and is better suited to get your prom date out on the floor and slow dance to. Still great, and never too late to be introduced to.

    Album Description

Jules & The Polar Bears was the brainchild of singer/songwriter Jules Shear, forming the group in 1978. They were immediately signed to Columbia Records. Their 2nd album, Fanetiks, frequently makes the top 10 list of the most requested album yet to be issued on CD. So we now proudly accommodate those fans, & add 5 bonus tracks, consisting of one rare single b-side, plus the complete Economy Package EP! Wounded Bird Records. 2005.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Jules Is A Diamond!.......2006-02-20

This is a welcome reissue of the second album by an excellent band with perhaps the finest living American songwriter in terms of consistency (Bob Dylan, for all his ups and downs, remains the greatest, of course). Fanetiks is a little more synth oriented than the first Polar Bears album ('Got No Breeding'), but still rocks tremendously.

The reissue also includes all four tracks from a Polar Bears EP that was, until now, available only on vinyl.

I give this album my highest recommendation, and urge you to seek out anything else that Jules Shear is or has been involved in. He's an American treasure and we need to KEEP HIS WORK IN PRINT!!

4 out of 5 stars However you say it, a great album.......2006-02-03

Jules Shear has always been a great songwriter; a spiritual heir to the likes of Alex Chilton or close kin to Aimee Mann, whom he once had a relationship with. But he has also been a style chameleon. "Fenetiks," his second album with the Polar Bears, is the peak of his "new wave" period, and probably one of his best all around.

Not only was Jules firing on all cylinders as a songwriter, his band was playing rock-solidly behind him. The secret weapon here was keyboardist Stephen Hague, who also co-produced. His edgy synths propel the album through some of the most rocking material Jules has ever done. Both the songs "Good Reason" and "You're So Complete" are as good as any of the best the synth happy '80's ever produced. (Hague would grow into a notorious producer, guiding Pet Shop Boys and New Order to some of their greatest successes.)

But the most important aspect of any record Shear is involved in is the writing. (Personal fave from "All Caked Up," "We're like two gods chewing the fat, killing each other about this and that.") On "fenetiks," he's clever, touching and witty. The ballads "Real Enough To Love" and - from the bonus EP tracks - "Alive Alone" share the kind of ache that Jackson Browne hits when at his best. "Alive Alone" has developed into a standard of sorts, with both Ian Matthews and Mickey Thomas (of Starship) taking cracks at it.

Jules made one more chaotic album with the Polar Bears that CBS inexplicably shelved - the ironically titled "Bad For Business" - before going out solo. It's a shame that "fenetiks" has been out of print for so long, as i consider it to be one the eighties' great lost albums. And as his career became more and more introspective and folky, only on two out-of-print Cds (the band project and sole CD from "Restless Sleepers" and his co-effort with Elliot Easton of the Cars, "Change No Change") did he ever invest himself with the frenetic energy of "fenetiks."

5 out of 5 stars The Polar Peak.......2006-01-30

As the adage goes, you have your whole life to write your first album, and six months to write your second. If there's any less quality in the songwriting here, it's damned hard to notice. First of all, it's Jules Shear doing the writing, one of the finest living American songwriters. Secondly, the band arrangements have become much more unique and compelling. The first album, "Got No Breeding", sounds like a bar band performing Jules Shear songs (to be fair, a very tight, well-rehearsed bar band.) It's here that they have truly become Jules And The Polar Bears, a band with its own sound.

The "Laid-Back Classic Rock" groove found on the first album ("Following Every Finger"; "Home Somewhere") is gone, as is the atmosphere of a small club. Here the band is in a God-Almighty STUDIO, and making the most of it! Even on the one ballad (the overlong "Real Enough To Love"), the piano sounds huge. But mostly, Stephen Hague steps away from the piano and Rhodes, to dazzle/annoy us with 80s synth (especially effective is the Saw Wave doubling with Richard Bredice's guitar on tracks like "Brave Enough".)

Special mention must be made of "What Do You Belong To" -- from the creepy beginning of piano bass and clustered, staccatto harmonies, to the whacked-out drums criss-crossing the fade out, this is a particularly strong number. Oh, and don't overlook the tense reggae/ska number "Smell Of Home" -- in their quest for perfection, the band brought in a different bassist to nail this one.

In my review for the third album, "Bad For Business", I suggested that form had overtaken songwriting, and that form was perhaps a bit too free. In this context, "Fanetiks/Phonetics" is the peak moment for Jules And The Polar Bears.

Oh, and by the way, feel free to listen to it very loud . . . you may discover a few little things here and there.

5 out of 5 stars An unsung jewel..........2006-01-20

The first Jules and the Polar Bears album, "Got No Breeding," generally gets the lion's share of the acclaim when one puruses reviews of their two released albums. "Breeding" definitely has all the hallmarks of Jules' genious -- the inverted imagery, the insight, the endlessly melodic songs, the crazy bridges and codas...but I dare say this album sounds sharper in all areas. The melodies in particular have more corners, they seem more refined and direct. The performances steer away from the more classic-rock vibe of "Breeding" into a terse new territory that is informed by new-wave rock but doesn't quite define itself as such. The synths are fantastic -- old analogue things heaving bolds of sound around.

Jules songs more than rise to the occasion -- they are the occasion. And now we get it on CD...with five bonus tracks no less! A very worthwhile investment...their third album, "Bad for Business," which lay unreleased until the mid-90s, may be their masterpiece. Every idiosyncracy hinted at here is explored in full force -- walls of synths, weird distorted vocal choruses, and the existential songs that place love somewhere between ecstacy and paranoia. All the Polar Bears albums are awesome, and it's good to have this one back in print...

5 out of 5 stars Escape to Nature and the Universe.......2005-04-08

Disappointed, I saved my broken "Polar Shift" tape, thinking I might never again hear this enchanting and moving music. It had found it's peace perhaps in "Antartica" if there is a place for broken music. I have never since found an album that moves me like Polar Shift. In 2003 I visited Alaska and since have bought music like "Glacier Bay" and "Pacific Blue" but still think Polar Shift is the most inspiring rendition of the feelings when you fly and walk the Artic deserts or even dream of it, like I did over a lifetime. I am hopeful that some of these wonderful artists will also create an album about Alaska's Artic and especially about ANWAR before the oil industry trespasses its fragile earth. I saw very few animals in Prudhoe Bay among the oil drilling and pipelines, but beyond that, in the Artic circle, saw 17-19 wild musk oxen, an endangered species. There are only 350 of these animals left and most of them are in ANWAR. What a shame we are giving up the remaining 5% of the Alaska coast when the oil industry can drill the other 95% already. ANWAR will only produce oil for 6 months! Read Jared Diamond's books about the end of civilizations like the Anasazi because of their own environmental errors. We may be next. The air in the Artic is like drinking fresh spring water and "Polar Shift" puts you there.

I don't usually listen to "New Age" music, but about ten years ago I was spending the night at a friends house and she put this CD on as we went to sleep. I absolutly fell in love. This album transports you to the windy, snow swept arctic. Visions of black, starry skies and endless polar plains are portrayed in this beautiful music. If you purchase one album for relaxation and inspiration-buy this one. You won't regret it.

Vanilla Ice is a great artist. He is forever in the shadow of his Ice Ice Baby hit. Everybody liked that one didn't they? Well now why is everybody hating on him? I say if you have not heard any of his new material give it a shot. He is actually really talanted. His beats are tight and he produced, wrote and mixed the entire album by himself. If you want to get a look at a personal side of the ice man check out VH1's Remaking Vanilla Ice. It comes on May 1st. They are working to completly remake him and give him a new sound. Should be pretty good. His new album comes out in summer 2005. I guarantee you will be hearing him on the radio soon! But check out Bi-Polar and Hot sex. You will like it.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD since To the Extreme.......2005-02-19

Whoever said Vanilla Ice can't sing is a baby retard, this guy is the t_I_ltS (if you know what I'm saying!). This guy puts the G to the O to the B to the D to the E dawg!! He's such an inspiration! Not every white suburban kid guy can make music about "...poppin' hoods in ma back seat hoodsa." Granted, Vanilla Ice never said that in any of his songs, but he told me it's going to be on his next album, when I spoke to him at Target and Best Buy, where he was buying out the entire supply of his CDs. He told me he was "...helping to spark fan interest," but a cashier at the store told me he does the same thing every week in an effort to make it appear as if his CDs are celling, so he can keep getting record deals.

    Poor Ice. :(

    WAIT LET ME BE SERIOUS!

Okay I'm really going to be serious here for a minute...I sorta like this album. The remix of Ice Ice Baby as heavy metal is great. I don't like Nine Inch Nails for the simple reason that they're pretentious and the vocals are drowned out by mechanical/bizarre sounds that I have no interest in.

Vanilla (yes, I know this makes me sound crazy, but I'm serious) is actually quite good at heavy metal. He's a heckuva lot better than Fred Durst, even if he's just as immature and obnoxious.

Worth listening to -- you'll have a few laughs and might be surprised to find yourself enjoying one or two tracks along the way.

This deluxe, illustrated children's book format special gift edition features a number of scenes from the film and an actual encased jingle bell embedded in the cover. --Jerry McCulley

    Album Description

Promising to be this holiday season's family film blockbuster, the revolutionary computer-animated The Polar Express-based on a best-selling children's book, starring the voice of Tom Hanks and directed by Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis-is a classic Christmas film with a modern look. The soundtrack album also mixes the classic with the contemporary, with immortal versions of the greatest Christmas songs ever penned, such as "White Christmas" from Bing Crosby and new recordings from Josh Groban "Believe", Aerosmith's Steven Tyler "Rockin' On Top Of The World" and others. This Christmas everyone will be getting on board The Polar Express.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Wonderful Book.......2007-02-25

My grandchild picked this out for me to read last night and I had almost forgotten what a wonderful book it is. It has a mystical beauty about it that you can't explain but you feel it nevertheless. The artwork is perfect just like all of Van Allsburg's books. He's my favorite children's book author. The movie is another thing. Where the book is mysterious and beautiful and somehow captures the wonder and awe of the Christmas season, I think the movie is just creepy--the addition of stereotyped ethnic characters was all contrived and wrong.

    2 out of 5 stars Book-CD Deluxe Edition a disappointment!.......2005-03-05

I was shocked that a $34.98 book/cd was so small and has only nine paperboard type pages of art work. The "silver bell" in this package (as in another book set and the Lionel train set that I bought) is a cheap metal chrome plated bell and in no way resembles the beautiful bell illustrated in the books and movie. Surely someone will make an exact replica before next season.
The book should be priced at no more than $18 - a typical top line CD. Of course the music is fine....but consider buying the music CD only....for a lot less money! Better, wait for a clsoe out sale on this item!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack!.......2004-12-23

I loved every song on the soundtrack. It's the cd I play most this Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars Polar Express "De-railed".......2004-12-15

What a disappointment in the book. It's about the size of a CD case, the bell is a cheap $0.10 metal bell like you would put on your cat's collar and I can't believe I spent $30.00. Do not buy the book. Just get the CD!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed - "Deluxe Edition" Polar Express!!.......2004-12-14

I did't find this edition of Polar Express very "deluxe"! The book itself measures only about 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. I "assumed", which is always a mistake, that the board book would be similar in size to the hard cover edition. I think $32.00 is a very exorbitant price for this package. I'm very disappointed, but not willing to spend the shipping costs to send it back. I would not advise you to make this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Pure instrumental magic!.......2007-06-13

The purchase of this CD was highly recommended by a fellow member of Yahoo's "Beautiful Instrumentals Group." Containing several formerly unavailable on CD selections, this album is pure instrumental magic! For example, some of you may recall Monte Kelly's mid-1950s rendition of "Tropicana," from the LP of the same name, and other songs from that collection. They are here at last! I have been waiting since CDs came out to see "Tropicana" and many other "magical instrumentals" from the US and Europe finally appear on CD, and this is the first in a series of new CDs produced by Nick Acquaviva to hit the market that feature these wonderful instrumentals. I highly recommend that anyone who loves classic instrumental check this and the entire series out. You will not be disappointed!

    Album Description

J Rawls has assembled the crème of the soul underground for a compilation which beautifully represents the fluidity between hip hop and jazz infused soul. Having honed his craft with his group the Lone Catalysts, J now confidently delves deep into vocal terrain. The result is a refreshing collection of surefire gems.

From the bittersweet sentiments of the wonderfully talented Eric Roberson ("Pleasure Before Pain"), to the apologetic ladies anthem performed by Middle Child ("Woman Enough to Say"), Jonell's party anthem ("Miss You"), to Aloe Blacc's Brazilian love affair ("Bailar"), The Essence of Soul has something for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Discover early SNOW PATROL...........2006-09-10

First I bought FINAL STRAW a year and half ago and I was constantly playing it in the car and in my dorm room (great chilling/driving music). Then I bought EYES OPEN for my birthday, and was thrilled with yet another amazing album from what I consider one of my favorite bands ever (right up there with GOO GOO DOLLS and COLDPLAY). So naturally, when I listened to these two back-to-back, I went on a sort of SNOW PATROL binge and JUST HAD to buy anything else they had put out. I found out about POLAR BEARS and another early release and bought them for a great combo price.

While POLAR BEARS doesn't quite carry the same impact as their latest releases, it's a nice album to get if you enjoy going back to a band's roots and discovering their progression. It's really great just to play like four albums in a row, which I did on the way up to college recently.

I would definitely recommend this album along with WHEN IT'S ALL OVER WE STILL HAVE TO CLEAR UP, two of their early releases, which are great to play back to back and right before you go into another jam session with FINAL STRAW and EYES OPEN. Seriously, one of the greatest bands of this next generation.
