French singer/songwriter Keren Ann moved to New York to record the follow-up to her English-language debut, Not Going Anywhere. She settled in the area north of Little Italy, i.e. Nolita, hence the title of her second release. While her first two recordings were in French, Nolita is in both languages (pre-production took place in Paris). It's a quieter, more intimate affair than previous efforts, but just as lovely. Like Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto or Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, Keren Ann never shouts when a whisper will do and the music throughout could even be described as "whispery" (as opposed to, say, wispy): gently strummed guitars, delicate strings, spare percussion. There is one song, however, on which she does not take the lead: actor Sean Gullette (Pi) recites the spooky "Song of Alice," John Cale-style, while Keren Ann provides backing vocals. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Soft and pretty female vocals........2006-12-08

A fantastic cd of pretty and soft female vocals with mellow music, including at times some soft rock. Her soothing vocals are such a pleasure to listen to which puts to shame other female artists whom tend to sing LOUD.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth your time and money.......2006-10-19

First of all I don't understand about what frenchness everybody is talking about? Keren Ann was born in Israel, grew up in Holland, and lived in France for a relatively short time. Her French and her English are on par i.e. both are weak. Her voice and singing abilities are however even worse. She tries to sound like Jane Birkin, and sounds like a parody on Paradis. An amateur CD of an amateur singer, which should have never made it to the recording studio.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Catchy.......2006-03-20

Definitely not the greatest album of all time, but quite enjoyable. The English songs are catchy though the lyrics are repetitive and simple. The music is innovative. This is a nice add for a collection but not a major breakthrough in musical arts.

2 out of 5 stars Not good enough.......2006-01-31

I was eager to listen to this album, after reading reviews which compared Keren-Ann to Julie Cruise, and who says Juile Cruise says Twin Peaks, which is a great piece of cinematic and musical entity (David lynch as director and his composer of choice in almost every project - Angelo Badalamenti). However, after a couple of songs I got the impression that Keren Ann tries to be all cute about her melancholy and how soft her voice is, and how she throws a sitar here and some other stuff there, but I didn't get a glimpse of truly good music. It's like she tries to sell herself or something, but it is not there. So, no mystery, no deep feelings, just another artsy-high maintenace singer chick that cannot give me what I want, and what I want is somethign exciting....peace Keren-Ann, see ya! try to watch some David Lynch movies to live up to your pose.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Five.......2005-11-18

    Product Description

Luxxury began in 2002 when Baron von Luxxury, inspired by LCD Soundsystem's call to arms "Losing my Edge", sold his guitar and bought a synthesizer. He then rerecorded his home-demo songs as 80's styled electro-pop, with disco beats and shimmering Giorgio Moroder-y synth replacing the guitar parts. While tongue-in-cheek at first, the resulting sonic makeover was undeniably infectious, and a new (old) future-retro sound was born. That first batch of bedroom demos was picked up by Chicago's Omega Point Records and had three sellout pressings as "The Drunk EP." Now, after three years comes Luxxury's full length debut. "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" was recorded and mixed in Berlin, Los Angeles, Brooklyn and San Francisco by resident singer/producer/tyrant von Luxxury. The 12 song album employs 1980's influenced electro beats, synths, heroic guitars and sardonic lyrics to chronicle the rise and fall of legendary 70 s Sunset Strip groupie Sable Starr. It features cover art by internationally renowned artist Jeremy Blake, who also created Beck's Sea Change cover, the art in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch Drunk Love" and was the subject of a recent exhibition at the SF MOMA. "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" kicks off with "Drunk" (as heard on Live 105, XFM and Virgin Radio London). Dirty Girls Need Love Too mixes two parts indie dance-rock a la The Faint with the future/retro glam of Ladytron and a splash of, dare we say, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. And the electro-rock hits keep coming, from radio favorites "Something Going On" (a cover of the classic by ABBA' s Frida) and "Sable Starr" (as heard on Rodney on the Roq on KROQ) to the newest single "Sweet and Vicious" the album evokes equal bits of New Order, The Cars and Daft Punk. Luxxury brings todays kids and tomorrow's adults the futuristic sounds of yesterday, but sexier, and properly groomed.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Keren Ann, Nolita.......2005-03-07

Keren Ann's third French release is mostly guitar pop; she sings softly, but well up in the mix, so it feels as if she's sitting there on a stool in your living room, with her eyes closed while her accompanist strums a guitar or taps out a rhythm on a tambourine. Songs like "midi dans le salon..." sound like Village Preservation-era Kinks, with a sexy alto singer instead of Ray Davies, while "One Day Without" takes a more earnest, acoustic-folk approach.

The songs all have pretty much the same dirge-like tempo and the same earnest vocal treatments, however, which wouldn't be a detriment if the lyrics were deep and complicated and sought an emotional connection. Verses like "land slides and grips onto a side rock/fool's got eyes/and I don't" (from Roses & Hips), however, just seem opaque, as if they had been translated from Dutch to Hebrew to French to German to English.

For a record named after a hoppin', thrivin' New York neighborhood smack in the middle of a bunch of other distinctive neighborhoods, "Nolita" sounds curiously pure and refined. Didn't Keren Ann ever get a little kick from hearing "In Da Club" blasting out of someone's hooptie stalled in traffic on the Bowery, or the sounds of Chinese fishmongers gossiping?

5 out of 5 stars A direct hit to the pleasure center.......2005-02-15

There are people -- and you know who you are -- who can't get enough of a very specific kind of record: a whispery, sparely orchestrated, gorgeous-yet-melancholy soundscape with an achingly vulnerable singer at dead center. Think Nick Drake, Francoise Hardy, Beth Orton, BLUE-period Joni Mitchell, or the Velvet Underground's eponymous third album. Well, I am certainly one of those kind of people, and NOLITA is exactly the kind of record that floats my particular boat. I can't believe I've managed to overlook Keren Ann's existence until now. The only thing that makes me happier than the prospect of listening to NOLITA again is the prospect of checking out her previous work!

Keren Ann Zeidel, who records under the name Keren Ann, was born in Israel in 1974, and grew up in Israel, Holland and Paris. When she was nine her parents bought her a guitar, on which she learned to play songs by Joni Mitchell and Serge Gainsbourg. She moved to New York in 2005 and is already critically acclaimed across Europe and in the US. Nolita is performed in both English and French, and is the perfect introduction to a new audience. Described as 'beautifully melancholic', Keren Ann's music has drawn comparisons with the styles of Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Mazzy Star and Velvet Underground to name a few. 5 out of 5 stars Stark and sweet.......2005-11-19

Keren Ann Zeidel began her career with trippier pop songs, which got her compared to artists like Beth Gibbons of Portishead. But if Gibbons sounds haunting in her trip-hop cage, then Keren Ann sounds as much so when all the extra sounds are stripped away.

This two-pack includes her fourth and fifth albums, "Not Going Anywhere" and "Nolita." While these albums have differing sounds, they share a sultry, slightly creepy atmosphere, wrapped around the French singer/songwriter's fragile little voice.

"Not Going Anywhere" opens with a soft guitar and a little song musing on goodbyes and how "people come and go and walk away/but I'm not going anywhere." Music-box melodies, folky ballads, thumpy pop, gothic piano-pop and angelic-sounding choruses all add to the vaguely dream-like quality of this album. This isn't your parents' folk-pop.

There's a somewhat different sound in "Nolita," where Keren Ann stretches her wings a bit. It opens with an eerie-sounding pop number, before blossoming into wistful love songs, guitar pop, delicate pianos and strummed guitars, cheery little bouncy songs, and a country-folk number with a trippy edge.

With her trip-folky music and sad, soft vocals, Keren Ann sounds a little like Hope Sandoval. And like Sandoval's music, Keren Ann's music is full of peace, beauty and a sort of airy drowsiness. By the time the bewildered spoken-word "Song of Alice" hits, you will probably be mellow enough to melt.

Keren Ann's vocals are what really stand out -- she whispers, but not to cover up lack of vocal ability. Rather, it brings out an alluring melancholy in her voice that louder singing would not reveal, and allows her to sing angelic harmony with herself.

The music itself is in tune with her vocals, tending to gentle, folky guitar, delicate piano, electronic flourishes, violin and the occasional grinding bass. It's too delicate to be folk, too low-key to be pop. The only downside is "Nolita's" harmonica. It just doesn't fit in -- it's too grating and loud, and it drowns out the subtler instruments.

This French singer/songwriter reaches her pinnacle (so far) with the enchanting "Not Going Anywhere" and "Nolita," creating unique classical-folk-pop. Happy daydreams.
