About the Artist
Ruben Romero: Santa Fe native Ruben Romero has had a distinguished career as a Spanish guitarist. Inspired by the musical interests of his older brothers, he studied flamenco guitar in Spain and regularly joins other flamenco artists in public performances and private juergas. He has appeared with the Denver Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra and has been the subject of a musical documentary (Simple Treasures) aired nationwide on PBS. Ruben’s proudest efforts have been as arranger, composer and recording artist. Most of his recordings (over 20 releases to date) are devoted to his original compositions. Underlying his work are traces of the mesmerizing melodies and rhythms that have expressed the joys and sorrows of the gitano soul of his gypsy ancestors. From the lyricism of his heartfelt Lágrimas para Mi Hermano, written in memory of his late brother, accomplished flamenco dancer Vicente Romero, to the driving energy of his rumbas, Ruben’s engaging style has distinguished him as one of the primary innovators of the Santa Fe Sound. Recent recordings featuring guest artists such as jazz guitarist Wayne Johnson (Flamenco Flavors) and violinist Robert Notkoff (Las Guitarras de Carmen) showcase Ruben’s gift for collaboration with other accomplished players. And in his most successful CD to date, Flamenco Southwest, he blends his distinctive flamenco style with sounds inspired by the Native American tradition. Recognition of Ruben’s music has broadened with the worldwide success of Gypsy Passion and Gypsy Soul (Narada) where his work is featured with the "Best of the Best New Flamenco" alongside international stars such as Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez and Armik. Through these releases, Ruben has helped introduce innovative flamenco guitar sounds to new listeners around the world. Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri

Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol and undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In Threesome" is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship propelled by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly observant "Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are still the masters of the dramatic - check the painful pause right before the sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and Daniel's ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive evolution is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on tracks like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and on the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My Chemistry." While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he cautions against reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We always leave the interpretation to the listener," he says. "I mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time listening to the director's commentary!"

Our Love to Admire closes with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is among the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by the band. Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed around Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not only is it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the album's most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex shivers that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating experience. As the very last song the band recorded for the album it was, they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part was played on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings, providing Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his fingers. The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of the studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they were floored. The song - and the album - doesn't so much end as it bleeds to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback and strings. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional journey. Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged with a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of all, a new confidence.

A disservice to Interpol fans.......2007-08-07

I have long loved Interpol because of the deep, if enigmatic and shapeless, lyrics that they convey over dark, reverberating bass. For olta, they have taken the lyrics that so enraptured me with their stunning imagery (such as "I'm going to hold your face and toast the snow that fell," a favorite of mine) and replaced them with trashy, obnoxious songs about how having sex with too many groupies is wearing the singer out, and toned down the bass that was so important to their sound. What the hell, man? I wanted Interpol, the band that used to ask questions that intoned deep introspection on the human condition and used to make music that I could get lost in and didn't care about finding my way out, not Interpol--the band that has way too much sex. Ditch this trash and get their first two albums instead.

Truly disappointing.......2007-08-05

"Turn on the Bright Lights" and "Antics" are two of my very favorite albums, so I was understandably excited about this one. Early listens to "Pioneer to the Falls" and "The Heinrich Maneuver" got my hopes up that this record would be an epic to match Interpol's debut. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't live up to the promise of those two songs -- and even those two, upon repeated listens, reveal themselves to be lesser efforts from a band that made two near-perfect albums on their first two tries.

The band seems to lack the punch, much of it supplied by killer drums and bass, from their first two works. Songs like "No I in Threesome," "All Fired Up" and "Wrecking Ball" simply fall flat; they lack the drive, relentless energy and delicious atmosphere that I've come to expect from Interpol. Even the better songs, like "Heinrich" and "Pioneer," seem strangely muted. The best songs on here, including "Mammoth" and "Rest My Chemistry," have at least some of the impact of early Interpol, and they come close to rescuing this spotty album.

However, the biggest drawback here is that in the absence of this instrumental kick and power, the band's lyrical shortcomings -- even worse here than on their earlier efforts -- are exposed for just how serious they are. I was willing to go along with the silly lines found in some of the early songs, because they seemed to work well with the music and at least left some sense of mystery; it was possible to let them slide as metaphor or as Pixies-esque ornamentation. But here, the lyrics just seem laughable; "No I In Threesome," "Pace is the Trick," "All Fired Up" and even "Heinrich" have this problem in spades.

I truly like this band, and I hope they can regain their old form in the future. But this album, sadly, is no better than the rest of the alt-rock boilerplate being cranked out by any number of bands, from the Killers to She Wants Revenge. That's company I thought Interpol was too good for, but they proved me wrong with this one.

Another great album..........2007-08-04

Interpol managed to deliver a third great album!
Although it makes you think of a lot of other bands it's still the specific Interpol sound.
Their music creates a very special, unique atmosphere.
You either love it or hate it.

What can I say.......2007-08-04

This album lives up to the exceedingly high standards set by Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics.

For a band with such few full length studio albums released, I'm always slightly afraid that there will be a falling off. That is decidedly not the case here.

I thought Interpol's first effort was their best, with Antics an admirable but slightly underachieving album. With Our Love to Admire they've lived up to whatever hype they've managed to cultivate and offered more of what made me a fan while proceeding ahead into the moody alternative rock of their genre.

Easily as good as Turn on the Bright Lights, while maintaining the slightly more complex structure of Antics, Our Love to Admire starts and ends strong, with quite a few eminently classic songs in between. "Pioneer to the Falls" hits me the same way as "You Know You're Right" did on Nirvana's Nirvana album. It's a step in a new direction with the hallmarks of the band intact, and a reminder of why you listen to new albums in the first place.

One of the best albums of the year and a beacon in an otherwise fairly bleak 2007 (some notable exceptions from Wilco, Modest Mouse, The Good the Bad & the Queen, and Portugal. The Man notwithstanding).

Spare Me The Suspense........2007-08-04

With their third album, Interpol deliver the same brand of punk rock that made them popular with their debut, "Turn On The Bright Lights". Now you can argue whether they've improved or whether they've recycled themselves, but for me, I admit my bias up front, I like the band. I can't currently think of any other band that recreates The Psychedelic Furs and The Cure so well. There are flourishes of Lou Reed, early Human League, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, etc., but mostly I think of The Psychedelic Furs. So, I enjoyed "Our Love To Admire". Is it as good as "Turn On The Bright Lights" or "Antics"? I think so.

There's no one particular song that I didn't like, but "The Scale" seemed rather weak to me. The strongest song seems to be the first single, "The Heinrich Maneuver" which comes close to "Evil" from "Antics". Other songs I liked after repeatedly listening to the disc are "Pioneer To The Falls", "Mammoth", "All Fired Up", "Rest My Chemistry" and "Who Do You Think". The rest of the tracks are also decent, but not necessarily as strong.

Overall, "Our Love To Admire" is four stars, not five, because the band still needs to grow and incorporate a greater range into their style. This third album is solid, but they're starting to stand in one spot. It's a good spot, but something more adventurous and experimental would be more interesting next time.

this is a very great beatles album undoubtedly. A masterwork in many ways... it has gone into the history of western culture as a revolutionary album defining the times,the feelings, and ramifications of cultures in crossroads of expressionism, vulnerability, and abandonment. Most of the songs float into each other with different colors, moods, statements, and imageries, a rarely achieved feat even by the fab four...the song structures are complex, with impeccable musicianship, lyrical brilliance, and great singing(as always!). The only oddball song on the album and yet a great relief from the deep moodiness of the album is John's 'goodmorning, goodmorning' which kind of heralds the calm before the eventual storm: 'a day in the life'(which follows the conclusion portion of the theme song...) 'A Day in the life' is the type of masterpiece that most artists spend a a lifetime trying to emulate, parallel, and equal but just can not...as amply evidenced after decades passed... Only these four artists in time could have achieved this musical zenith... A work of art that defies definition... Harrison's 'within you without you' is east-meets-west at its deepest, a profoundly philosophical song indeed... 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' is another diamond on the album amidst so many... there is little or no weakness in this album which is uniformly great and each song insertion was after mammoth thinking and contemplation though the beatles always underestimated this aspect of their album making...it didn't just become a multi-concept masterwork by chance! it was made with great labor, imagination, dedictaion, belief and of course genius... A love's labor never lost in this case...

Before Music Videos - SGT Peppers - An Imaginary Experience .......2007-08-01

The most amazing thing about this Beatle record was/is that it transcends the musical experience. Keep in mind that in 1967, there was no MTV or VH1. When this record was playing your imagination went wild! It was like your own personal movie in your head. It starts like being at the theatre and then you go everywhere imagineable... sitting on a sofa with meter maid, inside the home of well meaning parents, going to the freak show circus, attending a church-like service with sitar, dreaming of growing old with the one you love, sitting in a high school class p*ssed off at the world, overcoming dysfunctional relations, riding in a boat, witnessing an accident, watching a fox hunt, reading a book, WOW. And everyone saw it there own personal way, no two imaginations are alike. The Beatles took you to a magical place within your own being with this record. I am grateful that there was no video to ruin it! BRAVO Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Day in the Life is a masterpiece.

Sgt. Pepper deserves to be considered one of the greatest achievements in popular music. This issue is good quality and includes a nice booklet that explains the album - including a diagram of who's who on the cover picture.

Just a very good Beatles playlist.......2007-07-31

Is this the greatest album ever? It probably is in terms of influence, from packaging and marketing, to the very notion that a rock or pop music album really matters. In terms of its musical merit, one can easily make the case that Pepper has been overhyped - and its shortcomings are all the more glaring in light of the album's cannonical status in modern culture. This record has suffered from its own success - and after forty years - its conceivable that it now represents something of a let-down. After all, no recording could possibly meet the expectations that this album carries.
This album should be approached for what it is, a very solid album by a talented musical group (that only happens to be my favorite band - and maybe the favored band of quite a few others). The strongest points of the album are its opening tracks and closing tracks - which form a medley of sorts and further the illusion of conceptual unity. Many (Lennon included) have derided the idea that this album is truly a concept album - and it certainly is not one in the sense that the Who's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are. The concept is more fundamental - that this disc contains a set of pop/rock songs that have been thoughtfully arranged together for all time - and not packaged at random to meet immediate market demand. In a way, with Napster and I-Tunes, the great age of the album that began with Sgt. Pepper, "Pet Sounds," and other 1966/1967 releases has come to an end in this decade, and this has made it it even more difficult to grasp what the fuss was truly all about. But if one wished to make a short Beatles playlist on their I-pod that captured the overall personality of the group, as well as having a representative effort for each of its four members, and a good mix of rock, pop, and experimental numbers - Sgt. Pepper would be an ideal playlist.

To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Although I never saw this man perform in real life, his music makes you remember all the good things about growing up and life. Iz's ability to make you feel his music is uncanny and spiritual. It will stir your soul. I recommend all of his music. A highly refreshing sound.

I bought this for a friend of mine who loved his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". She didn't know who sang it but we listened to it at her birthday party and this was it. Just Iz and his ukeleli. Anyway, we enjoyed the rest of the album too. His style was so gentle and pure.
The world lost one of it's beautiful spirits.

Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.

It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott

Cirque du Soliel were using Beatle songs in a routine over the last number of years, and with the help of fifth Beatle Sir George Martin and his son Giles, a fresh remix has been created. It reminds me of some of the aural innovation found on the Beatles' 1966 & 1967 recordings, and is highly recommended.

Very disappointing........2007-08-04

For a long time, I savored the idea of picking this album up and giving it a good, long listen. I thought, oh maybe this will be fun and even a bit mindblowing, getting to hear the Beatles catalog really given a thorough reworking from the great George Martin, the man most familiar with its inner workings...

Sadly, not.

This is a profoundly unadventurous record, with only one or two real moments of inspiration. Compared to earlier Beatles mash-ups such as the long-suppressed Christian Marclay turntable mixes or the Beatles/Jay-Z "Gray Album," this record is simply boring and effete, a simplistic pastiche draped around a few good parlour tricks, but nothing to get worked up about. The mix of "Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows" is a bit brilliant, but almost everything else is rather tame and ultimately dull. Oh, well. Maybe a few decades from now, after the copyright runs out, we can really get wild with this music.

Listening to this fab CD doesn't even compare to seeing the theatrical show along with the brilliant music of the Beatles, but it comes pretty darn close. I was one of the lucky ones to see the show when it first came out, and I highly recommend it for anyone who's ever wanted but could never get the John, Paul, George and Ringo expereince.

The Beatles LOVE CD.......2007-08-03

A fellow Beatles fan told me about this disc. I thought it was just another compilation of previously released material, but it's a whole lot more than that! It's a joining together of the Beatles songs and musical passages into a unique theatrical-type program which is extremely enjoyable in its concept and also sounds cleaner with better fidelity. I suspect some first generation master tapes were utilized. If you love the Beatles, you'll probably flip over this baby! If you're not sure if you love the Beatles, this well-produced and conceived CD will convert you completely. George Martin did a wonderful job and I'll bet it was a labor of love....The Beatles LOVE rules!

A nice nostalgic collection of songs from another turbulent time. Too bad they didn't include Country Joe and "1 2 3 What Are We Fighting For" or "California Dreaming."
Conversely, some songs on the CDs like "Reflections" or "Pleasant Valley Sunday" seem out of place.

It's tempting to read these songs--many about hope in the face of potential heartbreak--as an adjunct to Keith Urban's own tabloid-fodder life, which lately reads "ex-junkie country star marries Nicole Kidman, enters rehab." But his three previous albums have similar dark undertones. That would also be an underestimation of Urban's creative powers, which are broad enough to balance assembly-line Nashville pop with emotionally fine-tuned artistry. Breezy rockers like "Faster Car," sweet hooky ballads like "Shine," and readymade big-chorus hits like "Once in a Lifetime" rub elbows with more complex numbers like "I Can't Stop Loving You"--an essay about sad courage that starts with an acoustic guitar and adds instrumental textures as it unfolds--and "Stupid Boy," a tale of loss and self-discovery. It's no coincidence that both those songs climax with Urban's own crying guitar solos. As a player, his bold, midrange-heavy tone complements his most nuanced vocal performances. Best Concert Ever!.......2007-07-25

I am a 40 year old male who is a huge Keith Urban Fan. But, I am not a huge country music fan. I have seen many groups at the peak of their career such as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ozzy and many other rock groups. I have seen Urban twice the last being Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing tour in Atlanta. This was the best concert that I have ever seen. The thing that separates Urban from everyone else is that he is not just a performer but an artist. I promise you that at this moment he is the most talented artist in any genre. And by the way, this is his best record.

I love Keith Urban, but this is the first album I've purchased of his. I love "Stupid Boy" along with a number of others, however some of the songs just didn't really do much for me. I was just a tad disappointed. It was a good album but not a great one.

Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy thing is a great album. There are love songs filled with the emotions that I can relate too. There are sad songs and there are silly songs. Its is a true compilation of the emotions that we all feel every day put to great tunes. I personally feel that Keith's poetry is beautiful. He is the whole package. The passion that he feels for life and his music come thru loud and clear. Love his look, love his voice, love his talent. Can't go wrong with this album whether you are a country music lover or rocker.......its all here. Rock on Keith and keep sharing your love, pain and crazy things :)

Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." The true deserved Idol champ proves his talent with a debut littered with potential..........2007-08-07

I like Taylor Hicks as much as the next guy, and I was one of the ones who called his win the second I saw him audition, but if we want to be entirely honest with ourselves Elliott Yamin was the real deserved winner. His voice is unrivaled by any other singer I've seen on the show (male at least) and his debut album is further proof of that. While these eleven tracks are not as strong as I would have liked, they for the most part showcase his talent, the sheer quality of his amazing voice, and they provide enough enjoyment to make for a worthwhile purchase. Elliott was one of the singers who could sing anything he leant his voice to, so when contemplating his album my wife and I struggled with which direction he would eventually go in. I'm happy to say he stuck with ballads (which showcase his pipes) as well as R&B tracks that allow him smooth vocals to harmonize beautifully with bass lines and piano keys.

The album opens with a very `Boyz II Men' sounding track, `Movin On'. That's a good thing. He does very well with that style, and the beats really compliment his voice. He's ups his game though with `Wait for You', the first single off the album and arguably the best track here. I still can't hear enough of it. His voice is perfect here, even live (when he performed on AI this season he proved to be the best guest performance in the history of the show) and the beat is just brilliant. He turns things a little more upbeat, at least beat wise, on `Find a Way' where he laments about the struggles of humanity. It's a little deep for a pop track and I can't decide if it really manages to work itself out, but it's not a bad track by any means. He gets back to form though on `One Word' with the R&M beats and silky vocals, with a chorus that's infectious and sweet. A sure fire favorite for the ladies I'm sure.

`You Are the One' is the first sure-fire ballad of the album and Yamin truly delivers. The ivory beat setting the mood and his vocals help transcend past the generic formulistic lyrics and allow the listener to get into the song. The chorus adds a layer of maturity to the track, almost aged sounding, like it belongs in another time period. And back to form again with `I'm the Man' Yamin immediately gets into the mood of the music with slick vocals and catchy lyrics. This is one of those tracks you just have to sing along with. The guitars towards the end of the track add a layer of rock ballad going on. What I really appreciate about Yamin is that he doesn't push it with every track, belting out and proving his range. He's perfectly comfortable allowing the subtle tones in his voice to speak volumes.

`Train Wreck' has that aged feeling I was talking about with `You Are the One', but I think it may even work better here than in the previous. His voice is just about perfect here and he reminds me of watching him on the show and knowing he was a star. `Free' has one of the best beats on the album, the piano is great, but I'm not a fan of the track itself. The chorus tries to hard to be inspirational, with the female quire vocals going, and I just can't bring myself to really enjoy it. I don't know but in my opinion Mariah Carrey and Whitney Houston are like the only ones who can get away with the `inspirational' ballads. `Alright' is much more upbeat than any of the other tracks here and it works well. Elliott falls back to the ballad with `Take My Breath Away', but it's with his cover of `A Song for You' that he truly reaches his peak. His vocals are unimaginatively brilliant here, and if you remember his fantastic performance of this song on Idol you'll understand full well why this had to be included on his album.

So, in the end Elliott Yamin proves once and for all that he had the voice that should have garnered him the Idol title, and even though he was denied the crown he goes out on top with an album littered with gems and potential. His next album will undoubtedly be a grand slam now that he's proven himself with flying colors.

One Word...Amazing!.......2007-08-04

Elliott Yamin is the best kept secret! I loved him on American Idol and always thought he had the most amazing range of vocals and should have won! I'm delighted his CD is out and every song is better than the next. This is a perfect combination of soul, funk, jazz and easy listening. His songs give me goose bumps and bring me to tears.
I particularly love the song - "One Word"!

Takes my breath away.......2007-08-03

Elliott Yamin was my favorite on season five of "American Idol," which was filled with talented singers. I purchased his debut CD the day it was released. However, I wanted to listen for awhile before writing a review. I definitely liked it when it was first released, but "Elliott Yamin" is a relatively subtle CD that takes a few listens to fully appreciate. The CD tends toward up-tempo ballads and love songs, which is really what Elliott excels as singing. Overall, I think he did a great job at selecting songs that suit his voice and also blend into a cohesive CD.

The first single ("Wait for You") is particularly beautiful and has become a solid hit. The song had a slow start before eventually making it into the top 20 of Billboard's Hot 100. I also enjoy "I'm the Man," which features an atmospheric intro and incredibly catchy chorus. "Free" has somewhat clichéd lyrics, but Elliott's vocals blend with a beautiful piano backing for a real highlight. My final favorite song is "Train Wreck," which is a somewhat bluesy ballad with one of Elliott's most soulful vocals. Elliott also co-wrote "Trainwreck," along with "Movin' On," "Find a Way," "You Are the One," and "Alright." The CD ends with the only remake; of course it had to be Donnie Hathaway's "A Song for You," which was one of the highlights of Elliott's "American Idol" stint.

All in all, Elliott has released a very good debut CD that has obviously pleased most of his fans. I'm enjoying it more than four months after its release. Some listeners might find the focus on ballads a bit tiring, but do yourself a favor and listen to the CD for awhile before judging it.

Not up to hopes.......2007-08-02

I was realy excited to get this cd, as I felt Elliott should have won American Idol. However, I don't think the songs were well chosen to showcase his talent and many of the songs arrangements overshadowed his dynamic vocal capabilities. I have listened to it twice and not been tempted to listen again.

When I first heard him sing, I knew that he would win American Idol. But he didn't have the so-call look. Each song can hold it's on against some of the music out there now. I hope that his cd doesn't get lost like I've seen so many do. I pray that on his second cd that he works with stronger producers. Give this cd a try and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

I had never heard of Josh Groban until one night I was looking at the
PBS series, "Distant Shores" with Peter Davison and this backgroun music came up. I had to search for the voice and the composer. It took me awhile to find Josh Groban. I am very old(veery!), studied music for years and he has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
From such a young man it seems unbelievable. He reminds me of beautiful voices of yesteryear- a pleasure to remember.

For me Kelly Willis sits comfortably next to other alternative country queens Lucinda Williams, Alison Krauss and Kasey Chambers. Like the others, her voice has that unique quality that can tear your heart out.

Translated From Love is a first class from start to finish, with a great mix of ballads and uptempo songs. For me, only the David Bowie/Iggy Pop song, Success, falls marginally short of the mark. My biggest problem with the album is that it took so long for Kelly to follow up her 2002 gem, Easy.

Gearge Strait ..Move Over .......2007-07-23

Had a chance to see Kelly and band play recently at a the Granada Theater in Dallas. It had been years since I saw her in concert last. Great concert. Her voice really shines through on this new album and in a live concert it's a spectacularly refreshing alternative country sound, not something you'de expect from today's typical country bands that all start to sound the same after a while.
The opening song "Nobody Wants to Go to the Moon Anymore" is intelligently written with a catchy tune for all you scientists out there who are fans of country and often ponder such ideas (I swear I hear guitar licks from The Cars in a few chords). Her music has a clean sound, with great chord progressions. Her live band members are obviously talented in playing rock and roll and country in the wide variety of songs. The surprise for me was the ability of her lead guitarist to put down his guitar and play a banjo that mixes quite well with her polished sound on "Losing You" co written by Willis/Prophet. Of course for me, my favorites are "Sweet Sundown" and "Sweet Little One". If it has sunny lyrics ..it brightens the daily road ahead with a smile. Her husband Bruce Robison has written a song for George Strait, which she plays in her live venue, but I think I like her live version better.

If you get a chance to see her in a live concert, don't miss the opportunity to hear one of Texas' finest as she plays songs from this new album, which grow on you after just one playing. Highly recommended for energetic, Texas style music that fans of George Strait, Alison Krauss(AKUS) would love. Go Kelly! Welcome back.

Kelly Willis is a great singer from the Austin area. This album is very good and easily expands her range into all aspects of the country genre.

Great stuff and Oh that Voice.......2007-07-11

Once again Kelly draws you in with her stunning vocals. She has mastered the ability to surround herself with extreme talent as well in writers and musicians. This CD is better than Easy but not quite as good as What I Deserve. My personal favorite is Don't Know Why and there are several very good tunes her. Maybe one or two duds but her duds are still better than the garbage Nashville puts out. She is a class act.

Alternative(?) Country.......2007-07-10

Kelly Willis will never see much air play, as long as she continues to be herself. Her Austin based sound gets categorized as alt.country, which actually means her style is more country than CMT allows. I have loved her music and have missed her these last few years.

This album explores an expanded vision of her style - straying from the barriers of "alt.country' without ever leaving herself or her roots behind.

If you don't know Kelly Willis and hope you might be getting more of Nashville samo samo, stay away. If country swing is your thing, you probably already know her. For you, this is a must have.

One of Coltrane's greatest masterpieces.......2007-07-29

When John Coltrane recorded this album in 1964, he intended it to be a tribte to God; the record is an epic four-part suite, with each of its sections representing a stage in the struggle for spiritual unity with the supreme being. The music is full of passion and power, bulging with internal conflict and meditative grace. 'Trane's playing here is incredible- it's as lyrical as anything Miles Davis ever did, a virtuoso display of emotional resonance and controlled chaos. The rest of the players aren't so shabby themselves: The rhythm section of bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones lend the proceedings a surging, driving intensity, while pianist McCoy Tyner radiates angelic slabs of pure melody.

Just listen to the band moving through those four sections! "Acknowledgement" wastes no time in setting the tone for the rest of the suite. It's a mini-masterpiece in and of itself, boiling over with passion and intensity. There's pain in Coltrane's playing, but there's also hope and power- he shoots forth whirlwinds of pure, goreous sound, filling the room with pure electricified magic. "Resolution" builds on the template set by "Acknowledgement," which sees the band improvising on a rugged, bluesy theme. This section has an almost film-noir feel to it, thanks to the heavy tension in Coltrane's playing. Next up is the harrowing "Pursuance," which features a volcanic drum solo from Jones. The heavenly, meditative "Psalm" is an ideal conlusion to the record.

Simply put, this is one of the greatest albums (jazz or otherwise) ever recorded. No collection is complete without it.

Coltrane does it again!.......2007-06-11

This is one of the top 5 albums of all time. Coltrane is on fire, McCoy is on fire, Jimmy Garrison is on fire, and Elvin is murderous. Out of all of tunes, my fav is Pursuance. It's passionate, has a hard bopish-avantgarde feel and yet it still swings. Out of the park!

Rookie Coltrane Listener.......2007-05-26

For years my very good friend who prides himself on being a music aficionado and "snob", much like Jack Black's character in High Fidelity, has been raving about John Coltrane and a "Love Supreme". I however, have been firmly encamped in the classic rock, blues and pop of the 50's, 60's & 70's. I always felt the jazz style that Coltrane and others of that genre played, was way above my head. Though I appreciated the musicianship to the degree I could, I didn't particularly care for it. I didn't "get it".

But now as I reach the half-way point in my fifties, I wanted to force my self to listen and try to see just what it is about Coltrane that so many folks find extrodinary. So my friend recommended A Love Supreme. I listened and listened and virtually immersed my self in the recording until passages became familiar. Now I have a glimmer, an embryonic appreciation of the man's gift. I put it on for my 17 year old daughter and she loves it! It grows on you and I think maybe for the first time I'm experiencing what that type of jazz can do for you. Live & learn!

Deeply moving..........2007-04-20

This is a deeply spiritual album. It never ceases to move me in some way everytime I hear it. It feels so real and authentic that if you're not careful, you may shed a tear of joy or two. It's just one long suite, made by Coltrane after he kicked his heroin habit and found his soul and God again. It's not often one describes a jazz album as moving (Miles's Sketches of Spain is the only one who comes to mind), but there's really no other way to describe this wonderful, transcendent, beguiling album.
