This has Hawaii's hottest artists! Great selections! An upbeat Hawaiian style CD. Great to listen to! I highly recommend this CD to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2006-03-08

I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it! I can't stop listening to it; it's fun and uplifting! Last weekend I drove 10 hours to Kentucky to pick up some puppies and listened to it all the way there AND all the way back! Total of about 22+ hours of listening to the same CD and never got tired of it. Amazing! If you like some polynesian music with an upbeat to it, the kind that you might hear when walking down a boardwalk and a musician is playing some fun, upbeat music that makes your heart lighter and your step a little bouncier, then this CD is for you. I'm now going to buy the 2nd CD and any others I can find by this company. I just love it!

5 out of 5 stars Defining An Era.......2005-08-22

The Beamer's music defines an era. A certain time - the late 1970s; and a certain place - Hawaii. I was a student at UH-Manoa during that magical period and will never forget the sights and sounds of life in peaceful Mo'iliili near the university, with the razzle-dazzle of Waikiki just a short walk, or a 25-cent bus ride, away across the Ala Wai Canal. "Honolulu City Lights" was my favorite, though I also recall endlessly humming "Kaliponi Slack Key" (also featured in the film, "Big Wednesday," which debuted in 1978). Nowadays, living in Palau and Guam, I pass through Honolulu often on my way to/from the mainland. I still hear the Beamers, even while sitting in the Honolulu airport departure area! Talk about going "mainstream." Thankfully, their music has also since been enshrined with Hawaii's finest. As it should be. A real Hawaiian treat!

5 out of 5 stars Joyous Time Machine.......2005-02-17

First off, I must correct amazon's listing. I believe this album was first released in 1976 and not 1987. I was finishing high school on Oahu when Keola and Kapono was starting the revival of real Hawaiian music and would go into Waikiki to listen to their show. The music still gives me chills. This is not the traditional "Haole" music but the blend of real Hawaiian spirit and Aloha with traditional and western instruments. They are great artists and their music always lifts me up.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite recordings.......2001-01-21

I fell in love with "Honolulu City Lights" when it was first released in the late 70's and I was living in Hawaii. The vocal talents of Keola and Kapono struck me from the first time I heard them. Over the years, I played this album again and again. Then, true to the times, after purchasing a new stereo without a record player, I could no longer listen to my favorite of all albums. A recent trip to Honolulu renewed my interest and, much to my delight, I found the "Honolulu City Lights" CD. Six weeks later, the CD is still in my car stereo, and I listen to it every day. Twenty years has only increased my love of this album and the beautiful music the Beamer Brothers created.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent a must have for slack key enthusiasts.......2000-04-16

Everytime I travel to the mainland I think of Keola and Kapono's tribute to their home in "Honolulu City Lights" and "Honolulu City Lights" is the song that I recall every time I return. The Beamer Brothers are from a well known and well respected musical family in Hawai'i spanning many generations. The songs on the album tend to reflect their Hawaiian heritage and the real music of Hawai'i. For those who enjoy slack key guitar this is a must have album!

4 out of 5 stars Music As Plesant As An Ocean Breeze.......2000-03-13

I bought this CD because the last track, "Only Good Times," was featured in the movie "Big Wednesday." While at first I was piqued to discover the rest of the album was not in the same style as that particular song, I nevertheless grew to enjoy "City Lights." The sentiment of the songs is pure. You'll be put at ease by the restful mood of the Beamer brothers' slack-key guitar sounds.

Great, upbeat tropical music. Think I like Reggae in Paradise 1 better but it's nice. I have about 15 - 20 CDs in my collection and this is one of my favorites! If you're looking for the old time, mellow hawaiian music, this is NOT it. It's more like what they would play on a boardwalk in the Bahamas or something. Got a nice beat. Uplifting.

    Album Description

On this, Na Leo's eleventh album together, the trio again introduces new songs, and revives some old favorites. This "show" begins with a ballad by Lehua, the composer of such hits as "The Rest of Your Life" and "Flying with Angels," and ends up with a real "revival" song, "I'll Be Here 4U" by Angela. It makes you want to "lift up your hands, shout and sing." In between, there are covers of such hits as the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends," "You've Got a Friend," "Lean on Me" and "These Dreams," and Jerry Santos' "Seabird." And there are new songs from Nalani, producer/songwriter Ken Makuakane, Daniel Ho, Zanuck Lindsey, Ginai Johnston and Marvalee Tahauri.

These selections range from ballads, for which the three are most famous, to songs with a very infectious beat. "A Pocketful of Paradise" adds a special touch of aloha, and "Sugar Cane Shack" is just as "funky" as the shack itself. Throughout, you'll feel the warmth of friendship, their common bond, and the simple thoughts that have been their trademark in songs they've made famous.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories.......2007-05-19

After an absence of 7 years I returned to Hawaii for a visit last year. I had lived in the islands for close to 30 years and when I heard the music of Na Leo Pilimehana group at a friend's house I loved it. Upon returning to the mainland, I purchased this CD. Everytime I listen to it I remember my life in Hawaii.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2005-10-22

Na Leo is best at their original and hawaiian songs. "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "You've Got a Friend/Lean on Me" are not as good as songs like "Hawai'i Nei" or "Hapai Hula" or "Saving Forever". This is still an enjoyable album, but I don't like it as well as "I Miss You My Hawaii".

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Hawaiian Music at its best.......2000-10-29

I recently visited Hawaii and enjoyed listening to the local contemporary music stations. It was during this trip that I first heard NaLeo. I loved two songs, "Pocketful of Paradise" and "Sugar Cane Shack". I bought the CD and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the whole CD was great! This CD has a delightful mix of oldies, redone with an island feel, as well as some new songs. I hope that you enjoy this CD as much as I have. It has allowed me to remember my trip to the Islands whenever I put it in.

    Product Description

"All visitors ashore!"... was the familiar call from the ports of Tahiti, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and our beloved Hawai'i in the 1950s. All who stepped foot on shore fell in love with the mystique and the romance of these magical islands including two distinguished composers, Alfred Newman and Ken Darby. Combined, these two brilliant men have composed for such award-winning films as "The King and I," "Wuthering Heights," and "How the West Was Won." After experiencing the islands, and working with similar arrangements on films "South Pacific" and "Bird of Paradise," the found it impossible to put down their conductor batons and ignore the wondrous and alluring sights and sounds of Hawai'i. In 1960, they produced for Capital Records, this album, Ports of Paradise, calling it "a culmination and most definitive expression of the enchantment which(they) have found in the moods, the repose, the mystery of those far-off places."

5 out of 5 stars The Five Albums That Changed Your Life.......2007-08-04

Someone posed the question (I think it was on NPR), "What are the five albums that changed your life?" It's the sort of question that only a music lover could ask -- and answer. For me, PORTS OF PARADISE is one of those five albums. I first heard the LP when I was about 8 years old, and it was like a tropical storm sweeping into my life. This album taught me that there is a wide, exotic, beautiful world out there beyond my ordinary suburban existance.

This is no accident. Ken Darby and Alfred Newman composed and recorded for Hollywood in its heyday. They had use of one of the big sound stages to make this recording. It features full orchestra, men's and women's chorus, and some of the best solo singers of the day. But the most wonderful thing about the recording is that Ken Darby assembled a gorgeous collection of exotic percussion instruments, including tom-toms, boo-bams, Chinese glass, Japanese wind chimes, Hindu tree bells and anklet bells, jawbone, lava rocks and gourds, as well as the more conventional xylophone, vibraphone, marimbas, timpani, gongs, cymbals, and an original bamboo organ recreated by Ken Darby. (This is a direct quote from the liner notes, which include a wonderful photo of the assembled percussion instruments.)

My favorite songs are "Whispering Wind" and an amazingly sexy version of "My Little Grass Shack." The latter employs the exotic percussion instruments to fine effect. But I also love "The Enchanted Sea," "Isa Lei," and "Blue Tahitian Moon." The only song on the album I'm not crazy about is "Madonna of the Flowers," but even this song is at least somewhat redeemed by spectacular vocals.

For years,I've been hoping PORTS OF PARADISE would be released as a quality CD recording. Now that it's here, I've purchased several for myself, friends, and family. That's the highest recommendation I can offer.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of the South Pacific.......2007-06-05

I had this album in the early 60's and played it so much that it became scratchy and unusable. Nevertheless, a friend tried to copy it to a tape some years ago, but all the scratches and static made it hard to listen to. A few years ago, I searched all over the internet to see if it had been re-released as a CD....no luck. Tonight at dinner, I lamented to my husband that I had been unable to replace the album and he said "try Amazon again." Voila!!!!!!!! I'm thrilled. I've just ordered 3 copies for my brother, my sister and myself since all of us loved the original version.

Since 1960 I have been to the South Pacific a number of times, so have made many new memories. Imagine my thrill a few years ago when I was departing a small Fijian island in a little boat. We were all throwing flowers on the water (which meant we would return) while the Fijians on shore waved goodbye and sang Isa Lei--the song I remembered so well from the album. My friends looked surprised as a sang along with the beautiful Fijian voices. Coincidentally, I'm returning to that same island next month and will enjoy the beautiful music from the natives along with my new CD.

Thank you so much Amazon for keeping up to date on music releases.

5 out of 5 stars The "Long Wait" is OVER!.......2007-04-02

Well music lovers, truth is stranger than fiction, and this one will be difficult to believe. I am on another professorial assignment to Chengdu, China, and after a difficult day, I played a little music that I brought with me on CDs. Last night I actually dreamed about this CD - except that there was no CD! About twenty minutes ago I was sitting with my wife and just "surfing," and recalling the dream, I typed "Ports of Paradise" into my search engine and "VOILA!" I could not believe it, and actually had misty eyes. Why?

For Christmas of 1960, on my return from a most difficult military assignment, my older sister gave me this LP, and she bought it "...because it has a pretty cover!" We both fell in love with it on the spot. Since the emergence of CDs, many other music lovers and I have continually petitioned Capitol Records to produce POP on CD, but to no avail, and we pretty much gave up. However, "There is a God!"

To provide a short "tour" of the CD, the title song, "Ports of Paradise" is a sweeping, almost epic introduction to a magnificent South Pacific cruise of the senses, beautifully guided by the Ken Darby Singers and matchless orchestration. You will be inclined to lie back and close your eyes. Equally inspirational, yet eminently shorter, is "Farewell for Just a While." Those with the most tender of musical souls will have no difficulty envisioning a tender "goodbye," against a glorious sunset, and it will most assuredly "put you in a mood!"

Perhaps the crowning glory, or the "home port" for the experience, is the incomparable "Now is The Hour," which is practically a religious experience. It is the best rendition ever recorded, in my humble yet considerable experience.

Thank you, Capitol - and Amazon!

Finaly this classic L.p from Capitols Vaults is re-issued onto C.D this reissue is long overdue, and hopefully it will be the 1st of many of the great Hawaiian albulms locked away in EMI /Capitol/Liberty/United Artist Vaults

The Sound is Excellent , All the beautiful Book with its lovely photos of the Hawaiian islands are reproduced too

Lionel Newman & Ken Darby worked on many great projects in thier careers over the years , both together and apart , but this must stand as a highlight .

Mavis Rivers is heard too sharing her magnificent Vocal abilitys .

this was a major project of Capitol in its day was a hugely expensive project. this easily shines through in the quality in every aspect of the package.

A must have for Hawaiian fans and fans of Beautiful orchestral light/Easy music .

    4 out of 5 stars Where's Newman/Darby's "Magic Island" CD?.......2007-03-08

"Ports of Paradise" is 1950s movie music for the mind and it has been restored beautifully on this CD. However it's not quite as memorable as the similar Alfred Newman and Ken Darby 1959 production "Magic Islands" on Decca. That it has yet to appear on CD is a crime. Two of Ken Darby's songs have become hapa-haole standards - "Magic Islands" and "Love Song of Kalua" covered by the late great Alfred Apaka and Hui Ohana among others. It includes awesome sound effects including a blast from the Lurline's whistle, apocalyptic thunder and lightning, monsoon rains, and a volcanic eruption - all in less that 40 minutes. Seeing "Ports of Call" makes me hopeful that "Magic Islands" will come out soon!

The musical legacy of O-shen started in the South Pacific Islands of Papua New Guinea. Like a fire, it spread rapidly to Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific, gaining huge popularity among local indigenous populations. His original sound pushed him to the forefront of the Pacific Island Roots music Scene. With a blend of reggae and hip-hop influenced by the culture of the Pacific, O-shen's music is purely international.
