Awesome Pool Music.......2007-05-28
This CD is great. It is wonderful pool music and great background music for a pool BBQ. Totally gets everyone in the summertime mood.
Authentic Style Sounds.......2006-08-15
This was one of three steel drum CD's purchased recently, and was the best of all. Great sounds...clear with good acoustics. Sounds really mellow coming from the speakers in our back yard paradise. Very authentic Caribbean sound. Just what we were looking for to give our outdoor entertaining a fun atmosphere.
Music to plan your cruise by.......2003-06-25
I'm on my second copy of this cd... it is still my favorite of any steelpan cd I have. It strikes just the right balance between fun and relaxing, and it makes the time between cruises go by much faster. :-)

Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy. --Chris Nickson

Buy this now..........2006-10-24
It's interesting how the negative reviewer below can speak of "delving" into so many styles of music, yet evidently came into this album with a pre-conceived notion of what it should be. This album makes no claim or attempt to be "classical" Indian music, except for maybe the last track. This album IS a fresh collaboration among some of the world's most talented performers (Indian and otherwise) that had my jaw firmly planted on the ground from the moment I hit "play". Hearing traditional Indian instrumentation combined with western production proved to me that nirvana or a great album of any style can only be obtained with an open mind. Absolutely amazing. 10 stars...
Still one of my favorites..........2006-05-07
I'd been a fan of Bill Laswell and Talvin Singh before, but this album introduced me to Tabla and the skill of Zakir Hussain. Years later, I own more classical tabla albums from Hussain and others, but I still come back to this one. I love it so much I started playing tabla this year.
Favorite tracks: "Palmistry" and "Alla."
?!.......2004-09-29
I really don't want to be mean, but I find this album very shallow. Classical Indian music is a very complex, subtle and beautiful thing. Comibining it in this way may help to get these wonderful tabla players to a wider audience, but the true energy has been tainted and lowered to make it palatable to simple-minded people who need westernized electronic and wishy-washy "world music" cliches. I don't find this music to be uplifting or enlightening or interesting. And this is not coming from a strict old fundamentalist of anything, I have delved deep into the avante guard, minimalism, "new music", eastern and western music theory, microtonal, etc. I would recomend jsut being a non-westernized album and getting the full benefit of tabla playing. However if your mainstay is jungle/drum&bass, then this would be a step up for you, so go for it, it is worth the pruchase in that case.
oh,that Billy-boy!.......2004-07-15
mr laswell has done many things, but this was quite a suprise!it consists of both chilled and upbeat tala(a middle eastern hand drum)drumming mixed with laz's trademark electronica that gradually fades in and out of the songs.it's a real trip-an-a-half for anyone not ignorant enough to dismiss it as "boring".
out of control.......2003-09-30
listing to this right now, so good i just had to right a review on it. This cd is freaking insane. Best way to lose you mind

This U.K. duo's landmark ambient techno album Lifeforms (1994) explored lush jungle vistas. Its follow-up opts for a much darker urban nightmare motif that makes it an ideal soundtrack while reading William Gibson. Progressive rockers by any other name, FSOL are highly respected innovators who rate with Orbital as the genre's leading exponent. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff..........2007-01-07
For those with a narrow musical mind, (i.e. the 'top 40' variety) this would be an unbearable CD to have to sit through, but for those with more open musical tastes, particularly in the lineage of ambient, acid techno , then this CD is for you. The soundscapes and musical textures on this masterpiece are eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate, complex and dark. Hats off to Dougans and Cobain , the musical geniuses behind this production. I particularly enjoy the track 'Glass'. But the songs as a whole fit perfectly together and mesh well. For those looking for something similar, try Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet'. This is the only album I can compare it to in terms of eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate , complex and dark. And TG did it back in the 70's...live! Even the album cover , like Dead Cities, is ominous. Good stuff.....
One of my top 5 albums of all time.......2006-01-09
Even though I bought this album almost a decade ago I have to express how wonderful of an album it is. The brilliance of this album lies in the conjured images it leaves in ones mind after listening to it. It seems the music was composed for a noire sci-fi film yet to be made. One moment its hostile the next its absolutely beautiful. Each track fades into an other weaving in and out of you're subconcious. If you're to get one electronica album its this one. A timeless masterpiece of epic proportions. FSOL's most surreal album to date.....do yourself a favor and get it while you still can.
One of the top 10 cd's ever produced.......2005-10-10
There's some good songs on ISDN and some good ones on Lifeforms, but this entire album is creme de la creme. It is definitely one of my favorites of all time. Each track has it's own identity, you never know where the next one is going. In a good way.
Better Than Great.......2005-09-06
What's more to say about what may be the best "rock" album ever (especially if you consider the "My Kingdom" EP to be the second disc in a two disc set)? The most emotionally wide-ranging album from one of the best bands ever. Who else has ever made music like FSOL? The Beatles and Fripp&Crimson are the only possible contenders. I've never heard anything that does a better job of juxtaposing the terrifying and the unbearably beautiful. If I could pinpoint the one disinguishing feature of all FSOL/AA releases, it would be (as a line in "The Isness" goes) "...[a longing for] inexhaustible ecstasy." It's all the more poignant on this album because of its being interwoven with themes of terror, paranoia and a sense of unrecoverable loss of something without which life isn't worth living. It sounds hokey, but just opening up the booklet while listening to "Her Face Forms in Summertime" and reading the scrawled message "things are getting f*&ked up round here" makes my eyes a little watery. My CD developed a 2 second glitch and I just ordered another one--this is so incredible that nothing less than perfection will do.
Just a few points of note: if you're wondering why you spent all that money on your two channel stereo and you haven't heard this album yet, pick it up and turn it up. I've heard recordings with more bottom end and slam, but none with more depth, nuance and musicality. I've also found that one of the true tests of a Masterpiece is whether it's possible to really enjoy listening to anything else after its over. Play Coltrane's "Ascension," Beethoven's String Quartet in A Minor Op. 132, or Bruckner's Ninth and see what I mean. I played Dead Cities last night and everything to which I tried to listen sounded hopelessly trivial afterwards. In the early 80s, a lot of my friends used to speak of The Clash as "the only band that mattered." At the time, I didn't think any band had mattered all that much since '72. To my now-much-older ears, FSOL fits that description more accurately than any band to the last 35 years, and this is probably their best work (every single one of them is a desert island disc, however). One of the very few utterly timeless classics of modern music, and a record that belongs in the collection of anyone with ears.
!.......2005-03-08
For me, this is my favorite FSOL record. Leans heavily on trip hop flavors and does not sound like Lifeforms at all. Well performed and intellegently written.
Great spin!

Jump-up Brazillian.......2004-08-29
This is a great jazzy jump-up drum'n'bass album. It's a good one for people to listen to if they are new to dnb and a CD that you can sit down and listen to straight thru. Stand out track is Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você which is a beatiful remix of a Fernando Porto track.
Drum n' bass is not dead yet.......2004-07-30
There's not much to say that the other reviewers have not said in praising the greatness of this 2001 mix. I find that whenever I play this mix to friends they seemed almost stunned, not having heard a dnb mix of such high quality. For those interested in the search for other albums along these lines check out NU PERSPECTIVES from the Partisan Label in 1998 if you can find it, COOL STEPS from fellow brasillian DJ Patife, DJ SUV's 2003 drum n bass mix on DMC and his solo project on the Full Cycle label, called DESERT ROSE.
Drum 'n' Bass takes a step closer to widespread acceptance.........2003-10-28
Possibly realising that D'n'B has the potential to reach a far more wider ranging audience, `DJ Marky' mixes a set that focuses squarely on the less abrasive side of D'n'B, and thus makes such a definingly brilliant set, that it's undoubtedly going to be copied over the coming years.....moving fluidly through downtempo vocal breakbeat "Un-Cut's - Midnight", "Krust's - Jazz Note", before the introduction of the utterly sublime Brazilian themed D'n'B tracks are introduced "Fernanda Porto's - Sambassim", and the wonderfully breezy DJ Marky produced "Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você", before rounding out things perfectly with "Shy Fx & T-Power's - Shake Ur Body" (Listed here as "Shake It"). You'll be hard pressed to find a more accessible D'n'B mix album that'll delight newcomers & Enthusiasts alike, and one of a growing list of D'n'B albums that has a chance of making a mainstream impact. and is unquestionably is a landmark D'n'B album of staggering brilliance...
one simple word to explain this mix.....WOW.......2003-06-29
this album is so amazing, everything about it from start to finish is perfect, the tune selection develops through out the mix, it really takes your through a journey, the tune selection is amazing, so many classics from 2000-2001, and many great brazilain flavas here also. Also the mixing on this albums is nice and tight and Marky leaves in the tunes the perfect length only to get you asking for more! the scratchin on this cd in not technically amazing but its sounds so well preformed when he scratchs over "the hook" or the tunes. its truly shows that in 2001 when drum and bass came back into full effect, how diverse the sound became with dark bizness, disco style, liquid funk, latin beats, techstep and dancefloor music. and it also shows why DJ Marky is a amazing DJ
its so wonderful!!! go buy this album now! you wont be disappointed at all
Very Tasty Latin infused mix.......2003-04-22
A very accesible Drum and Bass cd. Nice tracks mixed well. This is not the bone crunching dark sound that DnB can sometimes be, but neither is it the light & airy LTJ Bukem sound.
It will work just as well on the dancefloor as it will in your headphones.
Being the nitpicker that I am, I gave it 4 stars not 5. I took off half a star as in some places it tends to jump styles (ie lacks a flow through the mix) and another half a star off becuase some of the tracks lean too much on the commercial tip.
Having said that, a very good cd to get. Most drum and bass heads will like it. It will also serve very well as an intro to DnB for those who don't "get it" yet.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

I love this CD and am so pleased to have purchased it. I put it on almost daily at work -- it is the perfect length equipt with the perfect choice music.
Amazing!.......2002-12-18
I thouroughly enjoy this CD! The music is beautiful enough to listen to all by itself, but also quiet and peaceful enough to listen to while studying for exams or doing homework. Mad about Baroque has been in my discman for many weeks and accompanied to the library many times. This is a great CD!

After releasing their early records on Vogado's own Fluid Ounce label, Zero dB are ready to step it up, with their debut album, "Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines" on Ninja Tune. Though their main starting point is usually jazz, they dip into a multitude of different influences and work with talented musicians and vocalists to create their tracks. Zero dB's meticulous production forces their audience to discover previously undeveloped musical places.

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine
Customer Reviews:
Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08
No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.
This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28
First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.
The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.
I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"
A letdown.......2000-06-23
This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.
Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.
Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars
Disc 2 much better.......2000-06-19
There's another review that sums my sentiments exactly. Disc 1 gets 2-3 stars (kind of like a rap with faster beat) But disc 2 is really good; 5 stars)
Start With The First Volume.......2000-06-01
This set is more uneven than the first Urbal Beats, but it still contains more than a few classics of the genre. The two discs contain a lot of music for a good price--I recommend it as a next step if you like the first volume.

Customer Reviews:
A decade of AMP.......2007-05-14
First off, let me just say that MTV suxorz. However, they can't be 100% awful, because they brought us AMP (also, remember the classic Yo! MTV Raps and Headbanger's Ball? ;). And while the show no longer exists on the station, the CD lives on.
"Block Rockin' Beats" definitely starts the disc off on the right foot, with some hard and heavy breakbeats as only the Chemical Brothers can make them. "Atom Bomb" put Fluke on the map, and rightfully so. Underworld was at the top of the techno game throughout the late 90s, and "Pearl's Girl" is literally flawless in production. "We Have Explosive" = KILLER. "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" is a minimal, offstep drum & bass track, with a nice, almost oriental feel (hence the Japanese title, I suppose). "Girl/Boy Song" is far from Aphex Twin's best track, but its cool instrumental melody and scattered beats do well here as a contrast track, and you can almost understand what Aphex is about. Almost. Likewise, "The Box" is certainly not Orbital's best track, but it really gives a good feel for the group and the genre. Tranquility Bass drops a dark, deep, trip-hoppy track. "Inner city Life" is a drum & bass classic, and one of the main reasons I still listen to techno. The "Voodoo People" remix is the best version of another classic techno track. "Are You There" can get repetitive, but it builds and builds with acid breaks over a nifty answering machine sample. "Busy Child" brought the Crystal Method instant credibility, and staying power. And of course, what better way to finish it off than with some harsh, angsty Digital Hardcore from the master of that trade, Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot.
When I was 18 and still discovering techno music, this CD helped me to understand the different styles and popular artists, and opened the door for me to forge my own ideas about what was worth listening to. Incidentally, within a year of my buying this CD, I owned every full-length CD with the songs on this album. Absolutely worth it.
Ok.......2005-08-06
This album is not that great. It has some interesting music on it, and one or two songs I play on occasion, but it is pretty mediocre. Look elsewhere for kick ass beats or journeys through sound.
One of the BEST electronic compilations.......2002-12-26
First that all, Im an electronic music fan from Colombia. I remember that my first SERIOUS contact with electronic music was the AMP TV show, via cable television, way back to 1996. In south america, just like in the U.S. the fresh new sound of the AMP TV show captivated a lot of people like me. And just like in the U.S., here in Colombia, finding good quality electronic music was a lot harder than now...
So when this CD came out, I ordered it in a music store that worked with imports, and WOW... even now after six years, few discs on my collection have the ammount of quality that this one has. It has the biggest artists in electronic music, as well as some of their most famous tracks. Of course, this cd may not appeal to the "bang-bang-boom-boom" techno-fans, because every track on this album is pure flowing style. Real quality. Buy it NOW.
the original gangsta.......2002-12-11
This CD's a great starting point and nothing more. it was best back in 97 in my friend's car when we first heard aphex twin and atari teenage riot and laughed it off, only to end up putting it back on later. before circuit city came along and labeled it "electronica" and god knows what else, this was the best starting point for american listeners to get into british techno. only a few stinkers out of an otherwise very diverse (drum 'n bass, chaos, cyberPUNKROCK, straight up big beat) and catchy bunch, sure to sell any disbeliever after time.
Experimental MTV?YES!.......2002-05-14
Can you believe I have owned this CD since 1997? I stumbled across AMP one Sunday night after watching 120 Minutes. On AMP, I was exposed to for the first time Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London and many other cutting edge artists. From that moment on, I knew I had to have the CD! I agree with the other reviewers here, it is a taste of what MTV in the US can be if they chose to get back their experimental and groundbreaking roots. With songs from the likes of Goldie, the Chemical Brothers, Underworld and the now infamous Prodigy...this CD gives you an overview of the first AMP shows. I can tell you, all of these groups are still very much popular here in Europe and are not "One Hit Wonders" by any means. If you want a taste of experiemental MTV before the Nu-Metal and Boy Band take over of 1998, respectively, then pick up this CD, you wont regret it.
