Assembly

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Spinning traditional music into modern anthems is nothing new for producer-guitarist Michael Brook. In the past, he's recast the voice of the late Pakistani Qawaali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Armenian duduk of Djivan Gasparyan. This time, he takes the gentle tribal hymns and chants of Tanzania's Dr. Hukwe Zawose and turns them into a throbbing groove for a transglobal nightclub of the imagination. Zawose's multitracked voices and plaintive kalimba melodies are embraced by Brook in a techno-noir jungle that includes ethereal harmonies from Zap Mama singer Marie Daulne, horn sections that echo the kalimba themes, and guitar and bass that supercharge the rhythms. Brook infuses Zawose's music with a structural drama, a sense of journey and transition that makes tracks like "Haliko Chijende/Let's Walk" an urban African symphony and "Mbeleje/Sweet Deceiver" a surreal swirl. Assembly is far removed from the more traditional and pastoral sounds of Zawose's previous Realworld album, Chibite. Zawose may have lost his innocence, but the music still retains a joyous exuberance. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Best AOD Studio Effort Thusfar...No Question........2007-06-19

Though Assembly of Dust is definitely most successful in live settings, Recollection proves that a once stereotyped New England jamband can indeed produce a truly accessible, yet mature record without the incessant and seemlessly directionless noodling thats commonplace amongst other jamband's efforts in the studio.

Therefore, let me establish the fact that Recollection is neither a jam record nor the product of a jamband. It is, on the contrary, an album showcasing Reid Genauer's honest songwriting ability, the band's undeniable musicanship, and perhaps most importantly, how dramatic a change can be in a band's sound from one album to the next. Check out "Whistleclock," "40 Reasons," "Truck Farm," and "Grand Design" and see how authentic their tunes can be. They have an uncanny ability to turn the switch on/off from hard-hitting rock and roll suitable for frat parties to somber ballads about love, hardship, and fate. Nevertheless, the quintet is at its most tight point since their inception in 2002 and with a heavy touring schedule ahead of themsleves this summer, hitting every festival from Wakarusa to Gathering of the Vibes, who knows how long it will take for this unit to fully reach the potential that everyone knows they have.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong suggestion.......2007-05-07

This wasn't a good suggestion from a friend of mine to buy this.
I couldn't appreciate the melody of these soft songs not made for my years 70's rock generetion. Other are my preferred guitar players: Clapton, Townshend, Lee, Gallagher, Springsteeen, Hendrix etc. and other are my beloved rythms.
I'll be happy in providing Amazon with comments about other better purchases.
Thank you for the excellent quality of your general service

4 out of 5 stars Take all the great bands of the 70s, mix, and you have..........2007-04-20

On my first listen through this CD, I was enjoing the plentiful hooks, tasteful musicianship, and wonderful harmonies. Then, digesting the CD again, I started to play "Name the Influence". What a list! For instance-
Track 1, Grand Design, is very reminisicent of the Band.
Track 2, Telling Sue - sounds as though 1971-era Grateful Dead is playing the Phish song "Back on the Train"
Track 3, Zero to the Skin - this is influenced by Billy Joel channeling John Lennon on Billy's song "Scandinavian Skies"
Track 4, Whistle Clock - Steely Dan with the Pure Prarie League singing harmony
Track 5, Samuel Aging - Mark Knopfler playing guitar for the Outlaws
Track 6, 40 Reasons - Neil Young through and through

etc. etc. With echoes of Little Feat, and maybe some Alan Parsons. Whipped up into a very pleasant souffle of good music. Tasty to the ears, and each song is distinctive. The only complaint is that, for a CD that's only 47 minutes long, the vocals start to get a little monotonous by the end. And there's no extensive jams like on their previous CD 'The Honest Hour'. But the songs are tight as a result, which is also pleasing. So a very nice album that I'm sure will get a lot of listens.

5 out of 5 stars i saw beauty.......2007-03-23

Reid Genauer, Nate Wilson and the gang have done it again... beautifully crafting songs that paint pictures in your mind so bright you can see them come to life as you listen.
From beginning to end, this record really holds you in and never lets go. And, like other timeless albums, the more you listen, the better it gets.
Bravo.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18

Simply put, this collection of remixes, and a few artfully selected covers, is the highest quality collection of its kind I've heard.

Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.

I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.

Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.

To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Brilliant!!! .......2007-04-12

Collide must be one of the greatest bands ever to hit the gothic scene. The combination of Karin and Statik are explosive; indeed, Vortex is definitely their masterpiece of Remixes done right! As well as new songs that will demand your attention, highly note worthy!! Some of the best out there!

Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10

I really liked this album, while some of the songs are remixed more than once they're still able to keep a semblance of uniqueness. Then there are the little gems added to the mix "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" and "Feed Me to the Lions" are really fun songs that quickly moved their way into my top 10 lists.

These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20

You will all think I'm crazy, but I was looking for new music one day at work, came across Collide because it was "similar" to other music I like, and bought it without even hearing it! I wasn't somewhere that I could listen to the samples, so I trusted other user reviews, and couldn't be more pleased. This CD has become a staple in my collection, and frankly, hasn't left my CD changer yet! My boyfriend even added it to his iPod. My personal favorite is "The Lunatics...", don't ask me why. I always play it on my way to the gym...and sometimes before work...perhaps it's something Freudian. :)

I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.

Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

5 out of 5 stars remixed to perfection.......2006-07-06

before picking up this two-disc package, i was not familiar with the works of Collide. i bought this item on a whim, and am very glad i did. the variety of style approach is refreshing, you really don't hear the same song twice, though there are a few mixes of a few songs. these are good cds to put in on a trip or chill at the house, and i've had the album for a few weeks now and am not tired of it. enjoy the haunting effects of a great band rearranged by great artistic minds.

My kids love Puppy at the Pound and cannot seem to hear it enough. So I bought the CD and they absolutely love it! A must have for anyone young children.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Songs!.......2006-12-24

My youngest sister introduced me to Tom Chapin's music that she enjoyed year after year at the Walnut Valley Festival. I found they always hit the spot and you can listen to them again and again.
Recently after her untimely death, I happened across his tune "Happiest Song I Know" when I was feeling particularly low. The cheery words and encouraging lyrics went straight to my heart. You listen to one of his songs and it really speaks to you and the tunes are sprightly and energetic.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Chapin does it again!.......2006-11-04

My daughter just got this album as a birthday gift (she's six).We have played it every day for two weeks, sometimes twice, and each time I hear it I love it more. I'm a preschool teacher, so I immediately taped it to play in my classroom, and the kids in my class love it, too

Tom Chapin has a way with children's music. He has a gift for engaging not only children, but their parents as well. "Planet Bruno" not only pays homage to disco, but to David Bowie as well. How many children know "Major Tom"? But their parents do. And so do many of their grandparents.

Children need music that doesn't insult their intelligence, that plays like they think, and tackles the importent issues in their lives. Like being able to find their shoes or being proud to be themselves. Tom Chapin addresses children with humor, sensitivity, and, most of all, respect. How many times have you put on a CD for your kids and wanted to run screaming from the room? That won't happen here.

We so love Tom Chapin at our house. My daughter has decided that if we buy a copy of "This Pretty Planet" for everyone in the whole world, the world would be a better place.

It just might at that. Maybe we should buy them this one, too.

5 out of 5 stars "The pied piper of children's music".......2006-08-09

"Mommy, oh mommy, what can I do? I want to go out and I can't find my shoe!" "Did you look in the closet?" "I didn't." "Well, do! You're not going out with only one shoe!" So begins the catchy tune, "Only One Shoe," on Tom Chapin's CD entitled, "Some Assembly Required." This song and others like "Puppy at the Pound," a tune about a family trying to pick out the very best dog, had me believing that perhaps Chapin had taken up residence at my house!

My son still likes children's music, even at the ripe old age of nine, but not "baby songs." Chapin has managed to put together a CD that fits the bill for older kids as well as tiny tots. "Some Assembly Required" is that rare CD that delights both parents and their children alike and seems like in no time you know all of the lyrics by heart. In my house it is one that we put on in the car, at bedtime, and just while we are playing or hanging out.

If you haven't seen three time Grammy winner Tom Chapin in concert it's doubtful that it is because he hasn't toured somewhere near where you live; it seems that he has been around the U.S. and back again time and time again. You can track his concert schedule on his website. His concerts are truly family events and he is a wonderfully engaging performer. In fact Parents Magazine has dubbed him "the Pied Piper of children's music," a title that is well deserved. - Carol Laliberte

5 out of 5 stars Charming, funny, clever, musical...great for kids and grownup kids too.......2006-05-29

Fortunate to find Tom Chapin's Some Assembly Required at a yard sale, I listened to only the first song through a portable CD player before deciding to buy it. Although I don't have children, I do have a songwriting background. This helped me enjoy the clever lyrics on many of the songs and the expert arrangements on all of them -- in particular the versatile piano playing, which can really "cook" or be supportive and flowing.

As with other songs of this genre, the situations are particular to children: how to find a lost shoe, the attributes of one's face, is it okay to ask questions (of every conceivable sort), feeling shy to dance (and being relieved when your friends like how you do it). I laughed out loud on hearing Puppy at the Pound. Every family that has ever gotten a dog will relate to the universality of the lyrics, which is what makes the song so funny. The lyrics of How I Became a Clown are also highly imaginative and humorous; and the arrangement is a perfect accompaniment to the story. There are some surprises, too, appropriate for children brought up in the last 10 years: Brown Gold deals in an interesting way with composting; and Questions mentions iPods and Googling. The title song, Some Assembly Required, hilariously and accurately describes the time-consuming, often frustrating task of putting together a so-called easy-to-assemble toy, as many parents have experienced (and spent a kid's entire birthday on). I'm the Only Me is a beautiful, tender and heartfelt song that would work in any musician's repertoire.

The harmonies (like the musicianship) are splendid. I wish that the harmony singers chimed in sooner -- I think the album could use more of those richly textured voices. The pitch of the children's choir is spot-on, a welcome change from children's singing on some albums that sacrifices musicality for presumed cuteness. My only complaint is the unevenness of some of the songs: though most deserve a 5, there are a few 3s in the mix. However, I'm giving this album a 5 overall, in part to compensate for one reviewer's 1 rating (which for the life of me I don't understand). Many of the songs are memorable and pleasingly musical. And almost all are genuinely uplifting. If you have children, you will find common ground and much entertainment with your young ones. And for those who don't -- if you relate to life, and if you can appreciate the creativity involved in turning ordinary, day-to-day situations into art, you will like this album.

Album Description

Front Line Assembly reclaimed its throne last year with the release of "Artificial Soldier" and a world tour. Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the band is prepping for a second assault. "Fallout" features three new tracks and nine remixes and has been deemed to cause exhaustion from excessive dancing, hearing loss from listening to it too loud, and vertigo from its mind-blowing musical sequences.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Armageddon definitely steals the show on this one!.......2007-07-10

FLA has always included some good surprises on their singles, as well as their remix albums. Fallout is undeniably no exception, spanning over 10 tracks while featuring three brand new songs and several remixes for Artificial Soldier. Sadly however, Fallout is not without its flaws. While it does enter the record arena with copious offerings, some of the offerings end up sounding hollow and rushed. But what Fallout does have to offer that is worthwhile, quickly reassures the listener that FLA is still ready to hammer out an industrial masterpiece "in between" albums.

Armageddon could easily be said to the centerpiece of Fallout, and perhaps the main reason to justify buying the release. The sound of the song could be summed up as "very aggressive German Electro." The sound resembles that of a band such as E-Craft, but with FLA's own take on the genre. The songs lyrics are nothing special, since they consist of Bill Leeb's usual attempt at creating a rhyme scheme (it is interesting though that he threw in some of his native German language lyrics.) The sound on the song is what really makes it worth a listen. Armageddon features a full on grinding guitar assault mixed with some of the most aggressive synth work that Leeb has done in ages. It also has Leeb using much harsher vocal distortion than he has used in the past few years. All of the aforementioned culminates in one of the most delightful surprises that FLA has yet to produce since the song Anti (on the Maniacal single)!

While Armageddon is reason enough to buy the album, the other two new tracks, Electric Dreams and Unconscious do well on their own. Electric Dreams sounds like a song that could have belonged on either Implode or Epitaph, but its usage of electronics makes it more easily fitting for the Artificial Soldier era. Unconscious is also decent in its own right, but it's not as great of an instrumental/electronic landscape as Anti or Disseminate. Still, it captures a nice face paced EBM/cybernetic feel that FLA doesn't seem to really explore very often in this day and age.

As for the remixes on Fallout, listeners will most likely find half of them to be good while the other half will sound, as previously mentioned, rushed and hollow sounding. The most well thought out and produced remixes would be DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive, J. Inkel's remix of Social Enemy, Greg Reely's remix of Lowlife and FLA's own remix of Unleashed. Greg Reely especially does the listener a major service by taking Lowlife one-step further and "improves it" by adding onto Bill Leeb's vocal distortion and polishing up various parts of the track to give it and even more slick and powerful electronic sound. On the other hand, DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive is a welcome attempt at building on the song's drum and bass feel. Unfortunately, the song gets lost at certain parts due to losing momentum and seemingly dabbling around in experimentation. Still, the song is a valiant attempt at taking FLA and bringing them one step closer to the D&B genre.

Despite having a slew of unimpressive remixes, Fallout manages to come out ahead of the rest of many releases this year by offering up both some incredible takes on previous FLA tracks and some great new material. It is slightly disappointing due to the boring remixes but it is still very worth the price of admission for the new tracks, and if only one, definitely Armageddon.

5 out of 5 stars worth it just for the b-sides.......2007-06-20

the remixes are nice, but the unreleased tracks are what really pay for the cd. the first, electric dreams, is sort of a simple/implode sounding song. it's not as layered as a lot of the stuff on artificial soldier, but the verse synth works well enough on it's own. and +1 for the robot voice. secondly, armageddon, is almost a millennium/hard wired era song. live drums and live guitar. really in your face. lastly, unconscious, is an instrumental that kind of sounds like implode synth meets epitaph drum programming.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2007-06-12

I'm not very in the know about this type of music, as my first love is Metal and Hard rock. But I enjoy other types of music as well such as electronica and dance music. This Cd has some good music but I was really looking for a heavier driving rhythym than I find here. Still, it's worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Wind was Good...This is Magnificent........2007-05-10

Artificial Soldier wasn't a groundbreaking FLA record, but it is a well-rounded output. The bonus tracks on Fallout belong on that record. The mixing quality here is remarkable and could have only been hand picked by Bleebo. It is nice to see the guys won't give up anytime soon.
Kudos.

Album Description

The best FLA release the electronic industrial community has seen in over a decade. Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths, and Bill Leeb's trademark vocals couldn't be fused together any tighter if you tried to do it at an atomic level. As if all those factors weren't enough, two guest vocalists appear: Eskil Simonsson from Covenant and Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2007-05-30

This is by far my personal favourite FLA album yet. If your new to FLA (AS HARD AS THAT IS FOR ME TO BELIEVE) I would decsribe them as ColdWave/Industrial/Electro. I love the way that Fulber and Leeb used the synths and base line to make incredibly powerful beats with meaningful lyrics. I love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Hard Wired part 2.......2007-01-16

This album is almost more reminicent of older FLA. Though not quite as good as TNI or Hard Wired it definately has resurrected some of that old sound. It is an improvement over their previous two 'Epitaph' and 'Civilization' which were pretty good, but for FLA sub-par.

This is why I'm a big fan of FLA. After twenty years of making music they're still putting out strong releases to keep their fans happy. Hardcore fans seem to have wanted another Hard Wired and so FLA answered. Though it may not be as good as their material from the early to mid nineties, and there may never be, FLA is still going strong. Artificial Soldier is at least a 4 and a half star album if not five even if it's not their best ever. But there can be only one best. That's the definition of best. This album however still exceeded my expectations.

2 out of 5 stars Invading Familiar Territory.......2007-01-11

If you own Hard Wired, or Epitaph, you need not look twice at Artificial Soldier.

While I admire the work of Front Line Assembly for being a staple of my music collection over the years, I also have to admonish the band that made Tactical Neural Implant for not being more of a delicacy. Artificial Soldier falls right into the description of "standard issue FLA" with its bombastic synths, high-tempo breakbeats and futuristic/apocalyptic themes. And just like a staple, it's pretty bland if you've had it more than a few times, and for FLA fans this is more than a second serving.

Perhaps more irking to me is that this album follows right after Civilization, a Front Line Assembly album that dared to be mature, moody, dark and sparse on the bombast. Or that Artificial Soldier was assembled by the "FLA all-stars", not only bringing Bill Leeb, Rhys Fulber and Chris Peterson together on one album but several other contributors - when I first heard of the cast, I was excited by the potential piece of work. Not only did I wish for a continuation of Civilization's bold incorporation of female vocals, but also the addition of Decree's gritty, noisy ambiance - a combination that would be a new treat for fans of FLA and EBM alike.

Unfortunately AS didn't draw upon such strengths, rather it resorted to a formula that is more than tired for FLA. While albums like this usually would have garnered three stars from me, the band's constant tapping of the well has left it dry, leaving me thirsty for the band to record a new Tactical Neural Implant (and no, not a rehash of it).

5 out of 5 stars An all around great album..........2007-01-04

Some of Front Line Assembly's recent albums haven't been up to par with their very best albums. (Notably Tactical Neural Implant, Caustic Grip, State of Mind. Though, for my money, anything they put out in the eighties and early nineties was excellent.) I think their decline started with Millennium, which I felt was really not very good at all. Hard Wired looked like a return to form, but they started sinking again after that.

However, Artificial Soldier is absolutely excellent. The best track, I feel, is Future Fail. It's interesting that I like it so much, as the lead singer on that is Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242. (And I am not a fan of Front 242 at all.)

It's really quite hard to describe just how good this album is. Gone are the guitar parts of Millennium (which never sounded right on a Front Line Assembly album.) The political-tinged lyrics are back, but not in the way they used to be. (If you listen carefully to State of Mind, which came out in 1988, you can hear a sample from a news show talking about how dangerous al-Qaeda is. That just stands out in my mind of how much Bill Leeb knows about what's going on in the world. How many people outside the Middle East knew what al-Qaeda was in 1988?) Future Fail, for instance, references an ambiguous future where people are ruled by a tyrant. ("They massacre, call it progress/They plunder and call it wealth") Then again, the lyrics (with a very few exceptions) have always been fairly ambiguous as to their subject.

Overall, though, this is an excellent album. Any FLA or industrial fan in general should have it in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best new industrial/techno albums .......2006-12-27

I discovered the music of FLA by pure accident listening to some music on an internet radio station. These guys rock and this is one of their best albums next to Tactical Neural Implant. Whats amazing is that these guys were some of the original members of the super industrial group Skinny Puppy back in the 80's. This one is great music and I am sad that no music stations on FM radio play FLA music. Why? My favorite tracks are Lowlife and Social Enemy.

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Music to a Memorable Screenplay .......2006-03-21

Everything about this excellent score is pure America. The tempo corresponds to the changing moods of the film from the rolling road rhythm to the erotic tango and the college flaky beat during the practical joke which misfires. I am the only member of my family who hasn't visited the USA but I am hoping to one day make the trip and experience the multitude of cultures which inspired Thomas Newman, the composer, to produce such musical imagery in the changing scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Good original score, though better old melodies.......2002-10-08

As a matter of fact I bought this CD not as much due to Mr. Newman's original scrore, but since I liked very much the treatment of the beatiful Spanish song "La Violetera" in key moments of the film. Mr. Newman's music is very good, but the Spanish and Argentine music he used was much better. The performances of "The Tango Project" are superb. "La Violetera" is probably the nicest Spanish song, talking of a florist; it is widely known in its original version in Spain and Latin America, and moreover, came to international light thanks to Charles Chaplin's "City Lights" where it was the Leitmotif of the blind florist girl (a very adequate use indeed). The tango "Por una Cabeza" is probably the highlight of the score, because it is the piece danced by Al Pacino; unfortunately the other tango "Caminito", played by the orchestra at the restaurant, does not appear here. It is a petty. As a whole, I like the CD very much, especially the two performances of "The Tango Project", but just because they are more touching to my cultural heritage. Nonetheless, I praise both Mr. Newman's personal compositions as well as his perfect use of other's melodies.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done, Thomas, nicely done........2002-08-15

This cd is worth price of admission for one huge reason, the main theme music. It comes at us twice during our listening journey of Scent Of a Woman. It is likened to a kid finally learning to ride a bike for the first time, flying down his neigborhood road with a look of pride and surprise smudged neatly on his face. It is a delightful melody that will continue to stick in your mind for a long, long while.

Other notable tracks on this score are tracks 45 in 25, Balloons, Beyond Danger, and End Title.

This is a must cd for Newman fans and a very nice addition for any fan of film scores. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Newman is On and Off, as Usual.......2001-10-16

Scent of a Woman is 50% of a truly great film score...and 50% of a truly bad film score. It's obvious to the listener from which category a particular track comes from. Newman either gives the listener a vibrant, exciting, "new age" melody, or something that can only arguably be defined as music.

The fact remains, however, that when this score is on, it is REALLY on. The Main Title is an exciting track and the more emotional themes can really grab you by the heartstrings (though they undoubtedly hearken back to other works by Newman).

All in all though, for anyone familiar with Newman, two other scores better exemplify his talents. If you are looking for the unorthodox, "new age" Newman, go with American Beauty. If it's lush strings and sentiment you're after, go with Meet Joe Black (my personal favorite Newman score to date). Both will leave you with a much better idea of this talented composer.

Por Una Cabeza is a great song. I could listen to it all day. This is the first cd I found with a good version of it.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding - honestly.......2006-08-06

A friend turned me on to the live in Kingston cd and I was blown away. The song Honest Hour was the total hook for me - the lyrics are so descriptive and everthing flows to perfection. Great band - great album - great sound. Smooth - awesome - eclectic - down home - good time toe tapping - knee slapping put a grin on your face music.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cd I have bought in 6 months.......2006-02-07

This cd is just great. The Paul Henry and Speculator are outstanding. It truly is "An Honest Hour" of music. Assembly of Dust is where it's at.

5 out of 5 stars One of those CDs you can play the whole way through.......2006-01-25

I had heard some Strangefolk before, so some songs were familiar to me (like Speculator). That being said, you don't need any jamband background to appreciate this CD.
The tones of each song distinguish themselves. Reid Genauer is an incredible songwriter. Nate Wilson is one of the best piano players out there in my opinion. SOngs like "Honest Hour", "Roads", and "Man with a Plan" make the CD.
If there was a 6 star rating, I would give it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my BEST purchases of 2005.......2006-01-23

Radio in Key West, Florida is really bad...R-E-A-L-L-Y bad.

Now I have satellite radio...and life is good.

Anyway, I was jamming out and working on my computer, and this really killer song came on ("roads"...track 4). I was listening to the "Jam On" station, which really isn't my thing, but I can dig it now and again (I like to keep an open mind with all types music).

In this case, what was coming out of my speakers wasn't "Jam Bandish"...it was just beautiful music, plus it totally rocked.

I stopped what I was doing and just sat their blown away and fired up. That usually doesn't happen to me during a "first listen".

I typed them into Amazon to read what the customers had to say, and at that time, was surprised to find only two reviews(both 5 stars)so I thought "what the heck", shelled out some cash, and the rest is history.

I've turned this album on to so many people...and they love it.

It's fun music, and it has to be one of the best Live performances I have ever heard.

If you are open to good music...take a chance and give this album a shot. I am a critical S.O.B. when it comes to music and I proudly give this one 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.......2005-12-31

The hook-filled first two songs, which got some airplay on our local AAA station, grabbed me like few others have in recent years. The rest of the CD is just as good. Superior songwriting and very tight ensemble performances all the way through. Until you hear the crowd reaction between songs you can easily forget this is a live album. I was immediately reminded of The Band -- Reid Gennauer's plaintive voice has some elements of both Rick Danko and Levon Helm and the harmonies are similar, plus the lyrics evoke Robbie Robertson's heartland-inspired classics. Mortality, fate and honor are handled with skill and humor. There are also echoes of Bruce Hornsby (particularly on Speculator) and some nimble guitar reminscent of Dickey Betts. I have heard other live recordings of this band, which are freely available, and I think they really are this good live without any studio sweetening. An honest hour of intelligent, unpretentious and spirited music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Still as fresh as when it was new!.......2006-08-18

I was going through old cds that I found in a box and stumbled across this one. I plugged it in thinking 'this is gonna sound old and stale'. I was suprised when it didn't. I then remembered why it had always been my favorite Front Line Assembly album. Since my finding of this old gem I"ve gotten a couple newer FLA albums and in my opinion..TNI still is one of their best if not the best music FLA ever made. If you like good electronic music done right, this album is a must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars a real must for all FLA fans!.......2005-11-20

If you are a FLA fan and you still don't own this gem, you should repair right away!! I live in Italy and never had the chance to find this album in the shops. When I could afford a credit card though, this was my first online purchase (from Germany) and I'm currently so happy with it! It's my fave FLA album ever, it contains certain hits which made the history of EBM, it's very tough and got the right amount of electronics and industrial in it (not heavy like Millennium, nor electro like Flavour of the weak). It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The good shines out..........2005-06-10

Tactical Neural Implant(TNI) is a great album for its time. They manage to make a cohesive and engulfing synth/keyboard noises that are held together by hammering drums which have a somewhat dancy rhythm too, but the music is so complex and never repetitive enough to be considered dance music. Leeb's vocals are at one of their weaker points, but that fits albums style perfectly, as it is much more mechanical and less organic than any of their other albums, and his voice comes across as a grating vent-like rasp(some of the sounds he makes are almost as if someone poked a hole in his lung while he was singing and the air just rushed out in a wheeze). But when he has to he soars into lighter parts that make him one of the most enchanting vocalists I have ever heard(though he does get better at it on Hard Wired and Epitaph).

Overall one of their stronger efforts, though you can tell that they are somewhat held back by the technology available to them.(drum machine COUGH COUGH)

5 out of 5 stars sheer genius!.......2005-03-30

You will not be sorry. This is pure brilliance. Quintessential it is. The building of a song -- the foreplay leading to the climax -- FLA does this flawlessly -- each component, each layer, perfect and deliberate. These are beautifully crafted pieces. Other adjectives apply: magnificent, mesmerizing, exhilirating, intensely moving and fully satisfying -- satisfying but making us want MORE MORE MORE!!

5 out of 5 stars Tactical Neural Implant ~ Front Line Assembly.......2005-03-24

This is such an good industrial album, that I was sitting and listening to it and all the adjectives that I wanted to use seemed not good enough. However, if I have to put one then it has to be these, brilliant, astounding, stupendous and awesome. This is probably one of the best industrial albums of all time. The first track is good and then it just gets better and better. In fact the first track is not as good as the other ones and could have been replaced with another track. The book-let is ok but the lyrics are missing, but still it is an important release since it showed that inudtrial bands are tallented muisicians and can sing. Minphaser, Life Line, Guna are some of the best made industrial tracks ever with the intricate layers of sounds, bets and samples. The keyboard sounds are constantly amazing and this is an album not to be missed if one likes industrial music.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20

Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and simple.......2006-08-04

Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

5 out of 5 stars From Strangefolk To Assembley.......2005-11-16

I have been a huge strangefolk fan ever since I was traveling through Vermont one year on my way to The Lemon wheel (The Big phish show In Main that year) when someone told me: Hey man" You should go check the Garden Of Eden Fest (Strangefolks Big Show) while on your way to see Phish:
And sure enough I had a Blast!! And when Reid left strangefolk to form this new band I was heart broken, And I thought to myself that I would never hear music like that again...But I was wrong! And this album has got me dancing again! So check to out everyone! And don't forget to get out and see the band do there thing Live! :)

5 out of 5 stars as good as I've heard.......2004-04-22

I'd heard so much about Reid Genauer being an amazing songwriter - and everything that I'd heard was right! From start to finish this album is a gem. It covers all styles of music, from the rocking "Burned Down" to the ballad "Serenade Serine" to the funky "Love Junkie". Genauer's band perfectly supports his mighty voice and powerful lyrics with some great guitar and keyboard solos and just overall solid playing.

3 out of 5 stars comes up a little short.......2004-04-15

on the outset let me say that reid genauer is perhaps one of the greatest songwriters i have ever heard. being an avid fan of strangefolk while reid was in the band and also the amazing percy hill, which features the amazing nate wilson and jon lecesse (who are also featured on this album), i was quick to pick up the new offering from reid. it features a few tunes from the old strangefolk catalogue as well as a few new ones. being a huge strangefolk fan it was a little tough to swallow the versions of some of my favorite songs but reid and the new band do them justice. the best is probably "songs we sing" which features some great soulful back up singing. the album as a whole feels a little over produced and seems to lack that gritty edge that strangefolk had or that reid and the assembly of dust have in their live performances. the album is defintely worth a listen but it my mind it comes up short...probably because of my own high expectations of reid genauer.
