A casual listener may well wonder at the extravagant titles of the first two of these Symphonies. They sound like pleasant, somewhat less-inspired music of Haydn's era, which they are. The helpful program notes enable us to understand Dittersdorf's parody in the Delirium Symphony of the sturm und drang (storm and stress) style popular at the time. It doesn't take much help to laugh along with some of the style parodies in the Five Nations Symphony though, especially the comically repetitious Italian movement. The Hungarian orchestra under its German conductor (now a resident of New Zealand) plays with polish and zest, and the recorded quality is outstanding. --Leslie Gerber

Marvelous and impossible to pigeonhole.......2002-10-11

I stumbled upon this disk while visiting a record store in Paris and love it. I hadn't heard of I Muvrini before and am not yet familiar with his other recordings but am an instant fan. This recording is an exotic and interesting combination of French pop motifs, mid-Eastern influences, and even, on one cut, flamenco--juxtaposed here and there with musical textures that aren't usually found together, from simple heartfelt choruses that sound like refrains from French folk chansons to haunting Celtic-flavored accents. Definitely worth checking out for those who like world music that is adventurous without being aggressive.
