This is an excellent collection of many of the high points of the Manhattan Transfer's first decade, demonstrating both their reach and their grasp as they draw material from swing, modern jazz, and doo-wop into their own distinctive style. There's a tongue-in-cheek cool that connects the swing of Erskine Hawkins's "Tuxedo Junction" to the elemental girl-group harmonies of "Boy from New York City" and the TV themes like "Route 66" and the variations on the "Twilight Zone." More traditional jazz skills, though, are apparent in their renditions of some Jon Hendricks vocal classics. Composer Jimmy Giuffre plays saxophone on their version of his "Four Brothers," a key theme for bandleader Woody Herman, while there are also stellar renditions of Weather Report's "Birdland" and the standard "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square." It's an entertaining collection by a group that's never let itself be confined by the expected. --Adam Rains

What a fabulous CD. 10 out of 10. This group cements their status as the best pop vocal group on the planet. From big bands, pop, rock, jazz, doo-wop, this cd has it all. It proves that there isn't anything this group cannot sing. A must for anybody's collection.
MT Fan.......2007-01-18
I have been a fan of MT since I first heard Operator on the radio back in the late '60s/early '70s. I've had them on 8 track, vinyl, cassette and now CD. This CD replaces a cassette of the same title which I wore out and contains 2 cuts not on the cassette, so I got a surprise bonus. If you've never heard MT, try this. It'll whet your appetite for more.
Fantastic.......2006-07-31
The ManhattanTransfer has been around for years and listening to this CD brought me right back to my 30's. Love the music its great!!

Even minor chart successes like "Trickle Trickle" are on this compilation. If you're looking for a complete collection of the Transfer's hits, this is it.

All of the Manhattan Transfer's albums are laden with nostalgia, but few work as well as a time machine as Swing. This disc collects 13 classics from the swing era, from "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" to "Skyliner." All recall the past with the immediacy of a Burma Shave sign would. The Transfer felt the desire to recruit such talents as Ray Brown, Stephane Grappelli, Asleep at the Wheel, Ricky Skaggs, and Mark O'Connor this time out. The country contributions make these swing classics add interest to these covers, making this a Transfer CD that bears repeated listenings. --Charles R. Cross
Customer Reviews:
Swing--the real thing.......2007-07-12
This is a great nostalgic revisitation of the swing era. It's a good balance between the gospel and the fun side. This is my favorite of the Transfer's music. I got into it looking for a cover of "Sing you Sinners" and as I heard each song, I liked it more and more. Nice modernization that kept the swing concept intact.
Outstanding-Marvelous-Great.......2007-07-05
I think this is the best complete selection they have ever done. I was blown away by it. I have several of their cd's, and this is the only one where I loved every song. They are the best singing group in the last 50 years, maybe ever.
One of their best albums ever.......2006-11-26
I can't rave about this enough. Every song is great. That's NOT true of many of their albums.
"HARD SWINGING, JIVE SINGING".......2005-10-19
Five DELIGHTFUL Stars. The Manhattan Transfer is amazing and this CD shows why, in many compelling ways. MT fans, as well as vocalese fans of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross/Bavan, the Double Six of Paris, the Swingle Singers, and New York Voices will LOVE this CD. It's just plain fun to listen to, over and over. Janis, Cheryl, Tim and Alan are ridiculously talented vocalists and swing meisters. I love the way they jump into a track at full tilt, like a hot needle hitting a vinyl record's first track, with no buildup. And don't let the song selection fool you, it's all currently and timelessly rendered, at the same time. It's Great!
My favorite 'Pieces D'Resistance' are: a jumping "Motem Swing", an Ella-licious "A Tisket, a Tasket", the beautiful Alan Paul ballad "I Know Why (And So Do You)", a totally wild "Down South Camp Meeting", a poignant "Skyliner" with it's stair-step harmonies, an insane "Topsy", and "It's Good Enough To Keep" (Air Mail Special) which more than lives up to it's title. "Cho Cho Boogie" is recorded live and the group is on fire.
But Belgian jazz master Django Reihhardt's "Nuages" ("Clouds", in French) is the big number for me. Taken at a loping pace with great unison harmonies, it has a sizzling surprise appearance by Reinhardt associate, the late violinist Stephane Grapelli, in what must have been one of his last recorded appearances. 80'ish Grapelli's technical facility is so touching, so convoluted, and 'dead on' that it literally shrinks time and takes us back to the 'Hot Club' days. The deep harmonics are absolutely beautifully rendered. And Janis' solo is great and humorous. "Nuages" has to be one of the most beautiful jazz ballads ever written, along with Monk's "'Round Midnight" and JJ Johnson's "Enigma".
Kudos are owed, bigtime, to Tim Hauser for his production, the group 'Asleep At The Wheel', pianist/arranger Yaron Gershovsky (whose fingerprints are everywhere on this CD), and every swing-era big band that ever hit the road for endless tours of endless clubs. Five Swinging Stars!!!!!
It's Perfect!.......2005-03-22
What more can be said then "this is quintessential" Manhattan Transfer. It's perfect in every way. I can listen to this CD over and over . . . it's timeless!

The Manhattan Reansfer.......2007-02-02
This has some great singing on it. "Tuxedo Junction" in particular,
really jumps. The harmonies of this group are awesome!
FABULOUS!.......2007-01-27
The Manhattan Transfer may quite possibly be the most underrated group of musicians in America. This is a fabulous album, showcasing their spot-on vocals, scatting savoir-faire, and uncanny ability to assemble the ideal collection of diverse material that promises (and delivers) a perfectly heavenly listening experience. If you like jazz, and/or have an appreciation for fine musicianship and natural talent, I encourage you to give this CD a listen. Warning: it's addicting! I am currently in love with the song YOU CAN DEPEND ON ME: awesome vocal arrangement and sax solo!
Also, if you ever have the opportunity to see The Transfer live, please do! I had front row seats for one of their shows two weeks ago, and they were AMAZING! High energy stage presence, charisma, and showmanship...not to mention a captivating sound! Happy listening! :)
Looking Back, and Taking it Forward........2005-08-29
First, yes there actually WAS a railroad station known as Manhattan Transfer, and as it's name implied it was a station where people could transfer for trains direct in NYC.
That said, the current groups first studio album is awesome, and while it borrowers heavily from the "swing" era, it also contains great salutes to Do-Wop (Gloria, Hearts Desire), Beat (Java Jive), Gospel (Operator), and Pop (Sweet Talking Guy).
The songs from the swing era are all excellent with my favorites being; Tuxedo Junction, That Cat Is High, and the song that started it all off, Blue Champange.
The Man-Tran would go onto many differnt styles in the long and continuing career, but this landmark album started it all!
Very special.......2004-05-27
Blue Champagne and Heart's Desire demonstrate the uncommon versatility of this talented group. The closing notes of Heart's Desire show that Janis Siegel can compare favorably to an opera contralto when she uses that timbre of her golden voice.
One of their best albums yet!!!!!!.......2003-08-26
This is a really great album. It has 12 songs, and my favorites are numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 10. The harmony is incomparable to other groups of today.

Lush and exotic.......2007-07-12
I have yet to hear a Manhattan Transfer CD that I haven't liked. So far, "Swing" is my favorite, but "Brasil" is right up there as well. It's a gorgeous fusion of vocalese jazz and Latin music that just pours out smooth as rain on the forest.
This is also a very socially conscious CD. "Aqua" talks about the circle of life of water and for those who understand the lifecycle of the jungle, this is a critical element.
"Metropolis" which is probably my favorite of the collection is a stark picture of Brazillian urbanization.
"Hear the Voices" following is about the spiritus faith of Brazil. It doesn't precisely take me to the ceremony, but it's a decent intro.
"Notes from the Underground" is the final cut and ends the CD on a hopeful note. There's still a chance to save the beauty of the world and ourselves as long as we all live.
Every time I hear this CD, I hear more delicately woven elements of Brazillian cultures. In it's own right, "Brasil" creates its own delicate eco-system and a beautiful picture.
Brasil...Still Hot!!.......2005-07-14
I first tuned into MT's Brasil while touring as a dancer throughout France when the album was initially released in the late 80s. It happened to be a very wet tour; but wetness served as an appropriate background for the wonderful blend of sounds found in this music. I'm finally getting it on CD. Yes, Soul Food to Go!!
A tempting mixture of styles again from Man Tran.......2003-03-11
The title of this album is 'Brazil'. I'm not trying to insult your intelegence but I want to highlight the fact that this album is designed to bring the wonderful music of Brazil to the masses. This it does to a certain extent, however I do feel that it should be mentioned that you will not hear Brazillian music in the traditional sense.
The Manhattan Transfer have, once again, provided us with a gem of an album which introduces us to a fusion of jazz and world music. This is combined with a unique strain of 'listenability' to which we have become acustomed to from their music. We have the elements of South American music combined with modern jazz harmony and rhythm. The music of the great brazilian composer Djawan I find is perhaps the most successful on the album - especially the first track 'Soul Food To Go'. This album is well worth a buy - try it, you might like it!
The best vocalese record ever !.......2002-06-07
Here it is. The summum, the perfection, the best achievement in vocalese music.
Recipe? Two drops of the best voices (Manhattan Transfer), and a few grams of the best brazilian songwriter (Djawan). Result: amazing, hard to believe. Just listen to it.
Yes want somemore!.......2000-11-14
Agree whole-heartedly that this is definitely one of MT's best. It has a certain pizzazz & unique stamp to it. Latin is always both Cool & Hot. Yep, "Capim" is also my favourite but I also love "So you say". Forrest conservationists must definitely approve of this album. It's just got everything going for it hasn't it ? Just inspiring ... it recharges me everytime!

Compilation of music from 8-time Grammy-winning jazz/pop harmony vocal group Manhattan Transfer!
Customer Reviews:
Good collection for a casual fan.......2007-04-16
I'm not overly familiar with Manhattan Transfer's catalogue but I've liked a number of their songs over the years. I settled on this collection because it included their 90s song I always liked "The Offbeat of Avenues". However, it's not the album version of the song that I remember but the version from their "Symphony Sessions" album. But it's an interesting interpretation with the orchestra so I wasn't disappointed. The track list Amazon supplies is very off so don't use that to make your final decision. Here's the correct track listing:
DISC 1:
1. Tuxedo Junction
2. Java Jive
3. Candy
4. Gloria
5. Operator
6. Chanson D'Amour
7. Speak Up Mambo, The (Cuentame)
8. Four Brothers
9. Popsicle Toes
10. On A Little Street In Singapore
11. Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, A
12. Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)
13. Trickle Trickle
14. Twilight Zone/Twilight Zone
15. Birdland
DISC 2:
1. Boy From New York City
2. Smile Again
3. Spice Of Life
4. Route 66
5. Mystery
6. Why Not! (Manhattan Carnival)
7. Baby Come Back To Me (The Morse Code Of Love)
8. Sing Joy Spring
9. Another Night In Tunisia
10. Soul Food To Go (Sina)
11. So You Say (Esquinas)
12. Stomp Of King Porter
13. Clouds
14. Nothing Could Be Hotter Than That
15. The Offbeat Of Avenues
This collection included all the "hits" I was looking for so I'm very satisifed.
BUYER BEWARE - Incorrect Track Listing.......2007-01-17
The tracks listed on Amazon.com currently (Jan. 2007) are not correct -
7 tracks listed here do not actually appear on the CD set. They are:
Ray's Rockhouse, Body And Soul, Helpless, Love For Sale,
Down South Camp Meetin, Sing Moten's Swing, and Stompin at Mahogany Hall.
In their place are 4 newer songs from 1997-2006, along with Popcicle Toes,
So You Say (Esquinas), and Why Not (Manhattan Carnival).
For me, the loss of Body & Soul and Ray's Rockhouse (both among their 15 "Greatest Hits") made this set a throwaway. Hold on to your old 2-CD box "Down In Birdland" from Rhino.

These sophisticated jazz singers prove just how much their vocal versatility has always embraced pop, doo-wop, rounds, and a cappella music when the foursome explores 10 Christmas songs on a disc that previously was available only in Japan. The group transports "Jingle Bells" to the '40s in a sweeping nostalgic turn and do a knockout take on Charles Brown's low-down "Merry Christmas Baby" that showcases how elegantly funky they can be. An Acapella Christmas balances the more sophisticated harmony singing the group is known for alongside straightforward versions of "Christmas Is Coming," "Good King Wenceslas" (complete with kid voices), and an otherwise forgettable blatant play for radio on "My Grown-Up Christmas List." But with can't-miss readings of "Christmas Time Is Here," "White Christmas," and a totally magical exploration of "Toyland," the Manhattan Transfer delivers the kind of holiday record certain to please first time listeners while satisfying longtime fans. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Holly Jolly.......2007-01-28
A must have for any fan of The Manhattan Transfer, or simply any lover of good time, spirited, holiday cheer. Whether you choose to raise the volume and join the chorus, or choose a softer background tone, this collection is not only traditional Christmas, it's tradition Transfer. No fan could possibly be disappointed by this classic. Only Scrooge would miss adding this to his yearly play list. The Manhattan Transfer...melodic and ever better with age.
It's fabulous!.......2007-01-12
I saw Manhattan Transfer in Seattle a couple of months before Christmas, and they announced they had this coming out...but I never saw it at the store so ordered it from Amazon. It's really great and includes their kids, who were on their previous Christmas CD at a much younger age.
Top-notch!.......2007-01-11
The Manhattan Transfer delivers once again! Outstanding, quality work like the rest of their catalog!
Surprisingly good!.......2007-01-10
My dad has always been a HUGE Manhattan Transfer fan so I got him this CD for Christmas and I LOVED it! He also thought it was an amazing CD. The CD is very classy and fun.
Christmas is back.......2007-01-10
If you are a fan of Christmas you will love this CD. If you are a fan of Manhatton Transfer you will love this CD. If you are a fan of both this is a must have.

The Best of the Best.......2006-11-10
We are great Manhattan Transfer fans and absolutely loved this collection. It really shows the versatility and range of their voices and genious creativity. Can't listen to this enough and never tire of hearing it.
Legends Performing with Legends!.......2006-08-15
This is a great example of what a Duets cd should be like! the Late Great Producer Arif Mardin did a fantastic job putting this cd together! Arif stays close to the original arrangements on these great classic songs, and allowing some the guest artists to do the complete leads while the MT add fantastic background vocals, they do perform 'Along Comes Mary' & 'God Only Knows' themselves, but you can clearly tell everyone had fun recording this cd!, I feel 'Tonin' is a great addition to the MT catalog and it was a shame when this cd didn't get the promotion it deserved! because the MT did this cd with other legends and not some upcoming wannabes. When you have list like:, Frankie Vailli, Felix Cavaliere, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, Ruth Brown, BB King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor & Ben E.King how can you go wrong? you can't! this is a great cd if you are a MT fan, and you don't have this one, what are you waiting for? and skip the bad reviews on this here because those reviewers just didn't get the concept of this project.
Somnambulistic.......2004-04-26
The opening track, Let's Hang On, written to be sung by a man to a woman, is re-arranged for a man/woman duet in a way that destroys the meaning of the lyrics. The instumental portion is bland-ified in a way that is also completely out of touch with the original. And the rest of the CD goes downhill from there. It comes off as a bunch of hits arranged so as to be "safe" enough for the playlist at a smooth jazz station, and it just puts me to sleep. Not anywhere near the calibre of other Manhattan Transfer recordings.
I had to let this one grow on me.......2002-06-22
At first, I didn't like this album. Where was the Manhattan Transfer? With the exception of the last piece, all they were doing was singing backup to a bunch of other folks. What a letdown.
Once I got over my disappointment at hearing too little of the Manhattan transfer and started to listen to the album on its merits, it grew on me. For one thing, the musicianship is very fine. The instrumentalists are first class, the arrangements are well done, and of course the Manhattan Transfer are beyond compare. I don't know what the guest artists sound like on their own records, but on this one they sing, and for the most part, quite well.
The choice of numbers is good. They remind me that there were plenty of tuneful songs around in the 60s during the time of Soul and Motown. They sure beat the viciousness of rap!
The album is a lot different from most Manhattan Transfer work, but it has considerable merit.
I Love It.......2002-05-23
The more I listen to this CD, the more I enjoy it. It's just plain fun - you can't help but sing along.

Such a feel-good collection of tunes for all ages and types of listeners. Although I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite track, their rendition of Unchained Melody is way up there .. once you've heard it you can never go back to the original version.

When Tim Hauser convened the original Manhattan Transfer in the early '70s, there was more than a whiff of camp to the vocal group's pre-rock pop perspective, but what may have started with tongue-in-cheek quickly shifted into an earnest (if still good-humored) mission--the preservation of closely-arranged choral pop. From their first mid-'70s hits forward, the Transfer has gone from strength to strength, extending their reach into r&b, jazz, Brazilian pop, and even the vocal equivalent of fusion. This first-rate two-CD package focuses on their long career at Atlantic Records, where they did their best work, and is correspondingly ripe with gorgeous group and solo vocals. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
The Anthology: Down in Birdland - Manhattan Transfer.......2005-09-27
An album would have to be at the highest standard to warrant using Charlie Parker's moniker, and Manhattan Transfer have well and truly achieved that with this album. You will not hear crisper, cleaner harmonies. There are other groups and choirs that are as good, but none better.
The variety of music genres on this double album is very impressive; Jazz and Swing of course, Latin, Rock, Fusion, Soul and Folk, all performed with such skill, and in a manner true to the genre.
I saw Manhattan Transfer live recently, and wanted to buy one album that best decribed their work. I chose this album and was thoroughly pleased with the choice. If you like great music, and great harmonies, then this album will become one of your favourites.
Not yet.......2005-07-08
Up to now (July 7, 2005)I have not received this item that was ordered in June 7.
Material too diverse for a 2-CD set.......2002-04-05
An earlier reviewer was exactly right; the musical styles the MT have covered over the years are so diverse and all over the map that this anthology gives a hint of all of it but not a satisfying dose of any of it. Mind you, dear readers, that is not necessarily a criticism. The Transfer are the absolute masters of vocal harmonizing. Nobody, I mean NOBODY does it better (makes you feel sad for the rest). But just as you are settling in to listening to some of their swing jazz or doo-wop, the track selection changes gears on you and you are hearing Brazilian music or any one of a half dozen other styles. This collection is scratch on the surface of their vast and very impressive catalog, but if this is your introduction to them then you are only getting a teasing glimpse. There may not be enough tracks of the style(s) you like best to sustain your interest in the entire collection, even though it is all good. There is just so much ground being covered that the breadth of it all overshadows the depth of the individual records in their catalog. (Did that make sense or was I just being too wordy again?)
For those of us who are already MT fans and have most or all of their back catalog, the absolute BEST reason to buy this anthology is for the booklet insert. It provides a relatively thorough timeline history of the group, and extensive track-by-track notes on all the tunes, down to the musicians who played on them, and much more.
Typical Collection.......2001-10-18
If there's a problem with the Manhatten Transfer, it's the variety in their material. Although they are generally thought of as a vocal/swing/jazz combo, they've delved into other styles as well. The anthology includes some vocal jazz classics (Four Brothers, Tuxedo Junction, Route 66, Until I Met You), but also slides into pop (Boy from New York City, Twilight Zone), Latin samba (The Speak Up Mambo, Soul Food to Go). The stylistic variations present make the collection a difficult listen. Most of the songs are great, no doubt about it. But there's a troubling lack of continuity. I admit this is a problem many anthology albums suffer. In the case of the Transfer, it's a more significant problem due to the variety of material they've covered. For the unknowing, this isn't a bad start. Others may wish to acquire the individual albums.
Good stuff! But if you like this, then you'll love LHR........2000-07-19
I fell in love with the Transfer as a teenager in the '70s and thought they were the most unique thing going. What I found out later though was that the true artists of "vocalese" are Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. If you like MT you should definitely give Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross a spin. They started in the 50's and were truly a high wire act.

SIMPLY STUNNING!.......2007-04-08
This album is jazz and the Manhattan Transfer at it's very best! Pooling their talents with master of vocalese, Jon Hendricks, this set of tracks represents just how amazing and vast their musical abilities truly are. The best songs, in my opinion: Rambo, Airegin, and Sing Joy Spring. This CD has been tagging along with me everywhere I go, from work to home to the CD player in my car. I'm addicted! Give it a listen, and you'll be hooked, too!
A Pinnacle in Popular Music.......2005-06-08
This doesn't have to be your favorite MT record. You don't even have to like Manhattan Transfer or approve of the notion that verbalizing inspired solos by jazz instrumental artists is "creative." What remains indisputable is the sheer technical aplomb, the stunning virtuosity, the singular if not unthinkable success of this "grandiose" project. I can't think of anything in the realm of any genre of vocal ensemble music that is at once as bold in concept, challenging in design, impressive in achievement as this recording.
Manhattan Transfer has now been performing for an amazing 36 years (26 for Cheryl Bentyne), and it's doubtful they'll ever top "Vocalese," the dazzling recording on which they manage to execute John Hendricks' Joycean transcriptions of Clifford Brown-Sonny Rollins' solos without missing a beat. So demanding is the program of this particular set that I would have imagined some "creative" studio editing was responsible for the final product. Imagine again. (The live concert filmed in Japan is living proof of the utter technical precision of the group not to mention its showmanship and stage-savvy choreography.)
The highlights are Sonny Rollin's "Airegin" and, my personal favorite, Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" (retitled "Sing Joy Spring"), though Thad Jones' "To You" bears testimony to the rising star of its trumpeter-composer. The "solos" of each of the four members are no less extraordinary than the lightning fast unisons and harmonic passages.
Some fans of jazz have traditionally dissed groups like Manhattan Transfer (or Lambert, Hendricks & Ross or the Four Freshmen) on the grounds that it's less jazz than "copy cat" music performed by non-musicians (i.e. vocalists). Bassist Charles Mingus was perhaps the most outspoken critic of such attempts to "transcribe" jazz into "vocalese." Whether or not these four exceptional singers are jazz musicians or jazz "ambassadors," all I know is that they've given me pleasure and inspired me to return to the originals.
The group has had a tremendous run, but before they run out of transfers and pull into the last station, I hope they record some more jazz transcriptions--preferably Mingus tunes like "Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat," "Fables of Faubus," "Pithecanthropus Erectus," and "Better Git It in Your Soul." (I can hear Mingus tap dancing in his grave.)
Excelent Music.......2005-04-22
This is excellent, excellent music. I had not ever heard of Manhattan Transfer until this morning when I caught half a song on the 690 AM station in LA (a new Swing / Jazz / Bolero station whose name escapes me). On that particular cut, they exhibited some outstanding vocal harmonies (a la "Hit the Road Jack" with some excellent Acoustic guitar rifts that were Jazzy, Flamencoish, & Los Panchos-ish & that were executed very cleanly at a frantic pace.
I thought to myself this sounds very advanced & skillful...it did not sound like anything that could have been recorded in the U.S. during the 40's or 50's....but now it seems from the other reviews that this music goes back to the 70's & 80's which makes a lot more sense....but nonetheless I am surprised I never heard of them before.
Great Jazz for jazz lovers, by the way they sing.......2004-12-02
Like so many here, the memory of getting this 20 years ago on tape then stays with me. I was very new to Jazz other than the classic initial bop sides back then. Now looking back on these recordings, and having heard most of the instrumental cuts these songs are modeled on is that this is a great contribution to improvisation and jazz, great solos taken, not simply great solos and arrangements copied. Also, I think the added words contribute to the jazziness, the memory, and the entire discourse of the tunes. After all, Jazz is more openly a discourse than much else, where one version, one solo even, of a song does not exist independently but only in dialog with the rest of the recordings and versions. The words here add to the general perception of these tunes that we all have, and I am sure soloists whether instrumental or vocal are talking with them too.
To put it more succintly: Manhatten Transfer is just an excellent Jazz group producing great Jazz arrangements and great solos. That they do happen to sing is not just a good trick, but their voices just happen to be their instruments.
After all these years,I can't do without this........2004-06-29
In this album they proved that they knew how to put words on a jazz solos. And they did it so elegantly. When I first heard this,I was at a loss what to say,and got speechless for a while. This album is less poppish and less commercial, however, I must admit that this CD is the tribute to JOHN HENDRICKS.A MUST ITEM for all the fans of JAZZ CHORUS GROUPS.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
No one can escape being swept away by their awesome talents.
