Perfect -- in every way!.......2007-02-24

When jazz fans yet unborn debate questions like, "Who was the greatest jazz pianist, Bill Evans or Oscar Peterson?" I believe the contents of this CD will be offered as Exhibit A in making the case for Peterson.

In May 1993, Oscar Peterson was dazzling the paying customers at New York City's "Blue Note" when he suffered a stroke. In the aftermath, it looked to be a career-ending disability -- the dexterity of Oscar's legendary, left hand had vanished.

But ten years later (in his mid-seventies) the pianist/composer was on tour again seemingly "good as new" - and wowing audiences in places like Japan. The night he performed in Osaka (a city with nearly the population of Canada,) my youngest son "Ben" (then teaching English and falling in love with his future bride) was in the audience, watching in starry-eyed wonder!

Ben had longed to see Oscar "live" (and was envious of his parents, who'd witnessed Oscar `alone together,' 20 years earlier, with guitar legend Joe Pass).

So . . . having been denied the pleasure of seeing his musical hero "in person" here in Canada, Ben was beside himself with joy -- as he described the concert by phone 12,000 miles away, next day. "I was the only `westerner,' in a sea of Japanese faces," he said, "and almost the first thing he played was WHEATLAND!!! I think he looked my way and smiled, as he introduced it!"

Well, Ben will be enthralled with the 9 minute "Wheatland" included here - the finest "live" rendition of this musical portrait of Canada's Midwest, featuring Oscar's best-ever trio alumni -- Herb Ellis on guitar; Ray Brown - bass, and Bobby Durham -- drums .

Prediction: This latest (2007) 150 minute, double-CD package will be considered, decades hence, "the very best" compilation of Oscar Peterson's work.

Lovingly-crafted by producer Nick Phillips, (re-mastered in 2006 by Joe Tarantino at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley) the attractive package includes a delightful 20-page booklet with - I believe -- the most beautifully-written informative liner notes for any album by Oscar (and there are several hundred of his CDs listed here at Amazon.com).

Living up to its billing as "the best of the Pablo and Telarc recordings" - the 22 tracks range from an earliest live performance of "Tenderly" (Tokyo, 1953) . . . to an Art Tatum inspired, fast-as-humanly-possible, solo performance of "Back Home Again in Indiana," (Montreux Jazz Festival 1977) . . . concluding with an April 2000 performance of "Morning in Newfoundland," (from Oscar's "Trail of Dreams: A Canadian Suite").

This CD was sitting in the mailbox when I got home this evening, and I couldn't wait to hear what I was certain would be my favorite track - Django Reinhardt's "Nuages."

Until now I'd not heard Oscar's take on this, the best song of many written by the most influential, early jazz guitarist: Composed more than 60 years ago, "Nuages" acquired new life last year, thanks to a beautiful new lyric, written by Tony Bennett -- for his (2006) Grammy-winning "Art of Romance." (Please see reviews for that CD.)

Recorded live at Denmark's Tivoli Concert Hall (July 6, 1979) it's impossible to imagine a better jazz treatment of this great song. I'd intended to write some thoughts about just this one track . . . until I read the liner notes by James Isaacs (who composed, I think, the best liner notes ever written for Frank Sinatra - the "Great Songs from Great Britain," and "I Remember Tommy" CDs).

Mr. Isaacs' take on the incomparable "Nuages" performance heard here:

"And speaking of grandmasters, the French violinist Stephane Grappelli joined the Peterson quartet for the poignant "Nuages" (Clouds) - recorded before an enraptured audience on a summer's night in Copenhagen.

"Grappelli had played this haunting theme countless times, going back to the 1940s when he shared the front line in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France with the legendary guitarist (and composer).

"Joe Pass offers an introduction that is, by turns richly chordal and arpegiated; he evokes memories of Reinhardt without using the vibrato that was among the Belgian gypsy's calling cards. Then Grappelli enters magisterially, his tone golden, embarking upon the first of two rhapsodic solos.

"Peterson's unaccompanied, meditative rubato spot sets the stage for the violinist's return, and it is among the highlights in a career filled with them. The cadenza with its gypsy-like double and triple stops, is particularly ravishing."

I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

This is Great Stuff!.......2005-11-18

After finishing this amazing album, I couldn't help but conclude that if songs like "playing with the light" or "supernova" got airplay on popular radio stations, the brindley brothers would be huge. "playing with the light" is such a nice, laid-back pop CD that's can be played over and over again. The vocals are wonderful, the music is diverse and catchy; its just fun to listen to. which is what music should be like.

so head to the brindley brothers website and download some samples, just find a way to hear it! if you're also interested, check out luke brindleys solo work, its just as good. oh and heres the track list!

A gorgeous album!!.......2004-05-28

The Brindley Brothers are amazingly talented! Luke Brindley has a beautiful voice, and the tracks, some co-written by Luke and Daniel Brindley are just gorgeous! Personal favourite tracks on "Playing With The Light" are "Roman Candle", "Hudson River", "Harder, Easier, Better", "Supernova" and the title track "Playing With The Light". Since buying this cd it hasn't left my stereo. If you get the chance to see them live - don't miss it!!! They rock!!!

If you think that musicals are only outsize, outlandish spectacles hatched on Broadway, The It Girl deftly shows that there are other options. This small show was created in 2001 at the York Theater--located in a church's basement, it's as close as you get to a barn in New York City. Loosely based on the 1927 Clara Bow vehicle It, the show gleefully runs through all the 1920s classic situations and characters: chases, flappers, mistaken identities, a boat cruise, a department-store heir, and fake French accents—it's all there. You can almost hear the ghost of P.G. Wodehouse, librettist for the Gershwins' Jazz Age classics, cheering. The It Girl breezes through thanks to its cast's game can-do energy and the strength of Paul McKibbins and B.T. McNicholl's perky tunes, which deploy nice melodic resources and make the most of a six-piece band. There's enough knowing pastiche here to keep the saccharine at bay, but the creative team also shows genuine resource and love for musicals as a genre. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Can't Get Enough of "It".......2006-02-11

I took my daughter to see a production of this at a theatre in Hopewell where I sometime perform. We really enjoyed the show, and my daughter asked me to buy her a copy if the CD. I can't stop listening to this show. Great score...great orchestrations and great performances. I'm going to buy myself a copy too.

This musical has IT!.......2005-04-14

Maybe I'm biased, because I'm friends with the composer... but I was not when I first saw this musical, and I fell in love with it. A truly toe-tapping score, and adorably witty lyrics. It's a charming gem of a show, and I recommend it to any music lover.

The characters are fun, the story is marvelously scandalous (in a family oriented way), and the performances are top-drawer!

Like another reviewer, was lucky enough to see this show at the York Theatre in Manhattan. A wonderful musical score and clever lyrics made this show an absolute delight. A must-have CD.

This show is "How Do You Say...?" (Ah, yes) AMAZINGLY GREAT!.......2003-03-17

This show has a STELLAR cast! The cast is relatively small, only consisting of three men and four women. The music is original and REALLY clever (and based in the 1920s...GREAT TIME)! I listen to this cast album MORE than any other (and I have A LOT of cast albums)! Some of the MOST appealing tracks are "A Perfect Plan," "Coney Island" and "Step Into Their Shoes"! This would be A GREAT show for small theatres or small companies of actors! You'll be glad you bought this cast album after you take the time to listen to it all the way through at least once. You'll find a few songs you like and listen to those OVER and OVER. Two weeks later you'll find a few more songs you like and do the same! ... This is an A+ show!

Wonderful show with great music and lyrics.......2002-10-05

My family loved this show. Our eight year old son kept singing the songs and humming the tunes. He even wanted to listen to it at bedtime. Very catchy lyrics with tunes that keep your feet tapping. The show is full of songs that continually creep into your mind during the day. I often found myself humming a tune or two over and over. Highly recommend.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.
Thank God for an understanding bride.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.

Great compilation album.......2005-03-16

The set includes 3 CDs - "Relaxing", "Vocals", and "Epic". The recordings are wonderful versions performed by excellent orchestras/singers. I listen to it on my Paradigm speakers and close my eyes and can feel encompassed by the music. The recordings do not have the flaws (hiss, pops, scratches) in the sound that many 'cheap' classical CDs have. For 3 CDs and the quality of the recordings, I found this album a good choice!

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
