The Lion Roars: Live in America [Enhanced] [Live]

Known as the Lion of Egypt, singer Hakim is top cat in his Egyptian musical pride, leading his 16-piece band through a manically paced set of songs in the relatively new sha'bi tradition. Originally a type of pop music for the lower classes in Egypt, sha'bi features hyperactive arrangements that mix traditional Middle Eastern sounds with modern beats and an upbeat message about everyday concerns. Hakim comes off like an Egyptian version of Tom Jones, getting the crowd moving by gyrating his hips to accentuate the lyrics and wowing audiences (both live and on CD) with his searing voice. This enhanced double disc was recorded live in early 2001 and includes live video footage of the man and his band. That they were out in support of Yaho, Hakim's best album to date, only rams the point home that The Lion Roars is a live document of a dynamic performer and band at the very height of their powers. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, amazing, hypnotic, Arabic music at its best!.......2005-03-26

This is a true masterpiece! Hakim is truly amazing and is a huge assest to the Arabic music industry as well as the rest of the world. The sound engineering on this concert is simply superb. And only very few artists can demonstrate a true and exciting talent in front of the audience. Hakim is truly amazing and this CD is must have. It makes want to dance all day long.

3 out of 5 stars Great Expectations.......2002-05-24

Hakim is simply amazing. He is a strong performer with a true gift. But, however much I like Hakim, his performance in this album was not as strong as I would have hoped. Listening to the live recording is a bit depressing actually. In terms of artistry, Hakim deserves a full five stars, but the harsh and repetitive sounds of this recording wear on the ears, making it difficult to listen to and causing it to lose two stars in the process. For a novice to the genre who appreciates a cleaner, stronger, and less strident sound, one of his other records might be best to start with. For a true fan of Hakim and Arabic music who is able to look beyond the flaws and truly appreciate the artistry of the music, this is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Egyptian Soul Music.......2002-02-11

Unbelievable...This record showcases Hakim. I had the opportunity to see him live in concert last night as well. His band is a well-oiled machine of rhythm and soul that translates to any genre. His voice soars in the tradition of American soul artists like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, but the genre is distinctly Sha'bi. Combine this with the likes of a "Sha'bi meets James Brown" flawless groove that makes you want to dance like crazy, and you have an idea of what this musical experience will do to you!
