Album Description

The "Code of the Goddess" is an inspired musical exploration of the story from the best-selling novel, "The Da Vinci Code," by Dan Brown, featuring favorite works and new material from Laura Powers, creator of the Legends of the Goddess CD trilogy. A rich tapestry of elegantly layered arrangements interweaves beautiful melodies and mystical lyrics, creating songs that seem to spring from the souls of the characters we've come to know from the novel. This collection offers a perfect introduction to Laura's Celtic-infused music. It has become the soundtrack to my days, a musical companion on my own life journey. Celebrating feminine power and the beauty of the goddess tradition, Laura's earth-and-fire vocals blend with ethereal instrumentation, creating sensuous dreamscapes that transport you to another time, another place. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & uplifting..........2006-03-20

"Code of the Goddess" takes the characters of the "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown and breathes musical life into them. After enjoying the book so much the songs in this CD bring another element to the people and storyline of the book. No vague instrumentals and noodling here--These are songs that stand up on their own and to repeated listening. Opus Dei, The Mystic and the Muse, and the lovely "Heart in Winter" (Sophie's song is in both French and English--I recognize Pachabel's Canon in the song) are standouts. If there is no audio here I found sound clips on the artist's website. Well done--packaging is nice, too.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2005-03-11

I absolutely LOVE this CD. There isn't a single track that I don't love listening to ... at home, while working, in the car ... it's just one of those collections.

1 out of 5 stars Infinite Felicity - Not.......2006-02-05

One of the greatest disappointments I have ever had in my life was listening to the recordings of Purcell's music that were made in the 1990s by Robert "Everything He Touches Turns To Dross" King. The physical impact of the recordings was comparable to a strand of wet spaghetti and it takes real talent in a conductor to make James Bowman sound so ordinary so much of the time. Particular scorn must be reserved for the casting of Michael George. (What is the difference between Michael George and George Michael ? Answer: George Michael has a voice that is pleasing to listen to.) Michael George has a tolerable light baritone provided the dynamic never gets above mezzo-forte and provided the coloratura never gets out of first gear. (It can be heard to good effect on Hyperion's recordings of Bruckner's and Faure's Requiems.) However, John Gosling, Purcell's miraculous basso profundo of the seventeenth century, he most emphatically is *not*. If David Thomas (the only man for the job) was unavailable then the recordings should not have been attempted.

The problem is that these dreadful recordings have Hyperion's imprimature and so this divine music will probably have to endure a purgatorial wait of at least a generation for a new complete recording.

I'm sorry to see that King has finished with Vivaldi's sacred music. This is a pity, because the amount of damage he can do in this field is limited; let's face it people, once you've got the Four Seasons and the Glorias you've got everything.

A new project for King is clearly required along the same lines. May I suggest a complete recording of the Telemann cantatas ? Then we can all sleep peacefully in our beds until the time comes to sleep peacefully in our graves.

5 out of 5 stars Important Purcell Project.......2001-06-12

It was by this project that I made the acquaintance of Henry Purcell and his music. He just knocked me flat. How I love the elegance, gaiety and wistfulness (to name but a few characteristics) of his music. For this first Purcellian project (started in the mid eighties), director Robert King assembled a truly crack team of Early music soloists and musicians, he also provided extensive commentary in the booklet and wrote a biography on Purcell. This venture entailed the recording of the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs (composed for Royalty and festive occassions).

Only in the famous Hail Bright Cecilia and Come Ye sons of art away, the Choir of New College, Oxford lends it's support otherwise the soloists themselves perform the choral parts. Which certainly contributes to the intimacy of the recording. Robert King is certainly right in saying that the texts of these pieces aren't great poetry, but the music is divine (the usual flatttering of kings and nobles)! King and his team deliver an outstanding and important contribution to the Purcell discography.

My favourites among the soloists were: Gillian Fisher, James Bowman, Michael Chance, Michael George, Charles Daniels, Rogers Covey-Crump and John Mark Ainsley. Charles Daniels pulls this project indeed spendidly off with his solo Arise my muse. I loved the exquisite countertenor duets like Hail gracious Gloriana or Sound the trumpet and always Michael George's bass parts. But that's just a selection of the riches presented here. Afterwards Robert King went on to record the complete secular solo- and sacred music of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars valuable and enjoyable.......2000-01-12

This set will delight any lover of Purcell. Ideally, you will want all 8 CD's; but if you must pick and choose, get at least Vols 1, 2 & 8 (these contain, between them, Welcome to all the pleasures, Hail Bright Cecilia and Come ye sons of art). Volume 1, entitled Royal and Ceremonial Odes, was probably recorded before King knew for sure that his idea of producing the complete chamber vocal works of Purcell would be commercially viable. Hence, the separate title and no mention of the volumes still to come. But by the time the second volume was made, the future of the project was already mapped out. The purpose of the project was to record all 24 surviving odes and welcome songs of Purcell. (This project was later followed by a similar undertaking: an 11-CD set of all surviving Purcell's anthems and services - of those, get at least vols 3 & 9). By the time King was entrusted with this massive and ambitious project, he was still in his twenties. But King knew what he was doing. His assumption of the project was backed by years of research. He even prepared his own performing editions of the works he intended to record, and furnished sleeve notes for each of the CD's in his Purcell series (Later, he also wrote a book about the composer). King's notes are insightful, although his choice of vocabulary is somewhat peculiar and repetitive. The musical results are wonderful, by all accounts. I am especially pleased that King was able to assemble such an outstanding cast of singers. For me, the highlights of the series include: Arise my muse from vol 1 (an alto solo sung by Charles Daniels); Bowman's 'Tis Nature's Voice from vol 2 (although my all time favorite version of this air is on the Herreweghe); alto-high tenor duet Let Caesar and Urania live from vol 3 (you should hear Bowman and Covey-Crump blend in this one!); The sparrow and the gentle dove from vol 4 (Charles Daniels); alto-high tenor duet Sweetness of nature from vol 6 (Bowman and Padmore); an ornate tenor duet And now when the renowned Nassau from vol 7 (Daniels and Covey-Crump); and the glorious high tenor solo O how blest is the isle from vol 8 (Padmore).

Dawn Upshaw's recital of 20th century French songs is a bouquet to their great exponent, and often inspirer, Jane Bathori. Recorded live before an appreciative Paris audience, Upshaw's in fine voice, her lyric soprano caressing each song, leaving no doubt that she loves this repertory. She adopts slow tempos and characterizes broadly, assuming a girlish voice for some songs, a device that some listeners will adore (and others find repellent). The songs themselves are wonders, from favorites like the Ravel and Satie selections to rarely heard gems. The encore is a highlight: Dutilleux's 1993 setting of "San Francisco Night," receiving its premiere recording. Upshaw's legion of fans will need no urging to grab this disc, and it's a good choice for those seeking a representative group of outstanding modern French songs. Devotees of French mélodie, though, will prefer Marston's reissues of idiomatic historic recordings by an older generation of singers, such as Jane Bathori herself and Clare Croiza. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars The joy of hearing, and listening to, the voice that is Dawn Upshaw........2006-10-16

The joy of listening to Dawn Upshaw perform is that in any venue, in recital or stage performance, in any language, one can understand every word of text, and feel every expression. And, in any recording, especially this recording, one can "see" her expression, poise, and performance without having been in the auditorium. From Mozart to Vernon Duke, from Milhaud to Goliov, she exudes the pure joy of singing, with a clarity of tone and text, that communicates to the back row of an auditorium, or through stereo speakers, the jubilance that is Dawn Upshaw.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live recordings ever.......2001-12-26

I usually don't like live recordings. I don't need the audience to laugh appreciatively or burst into thunderous applause to tell me I should like the piece. But this album is different. It doesn't have that strange distant sense of watching a performance from outside the hall. In fact, just the opposite.
The warmth and character of Upshaw's performances pulls you in to the hall. Her respect for Mme. Jane Bathori makes this a true "hommage." Her French is impeccable, and it is clear she knows of what she sings. The performances of Ravel's "Histoires Naturelles" and Debussy's "Trois Chansons" are excellent, but I have to say her perfomance of Roussel's "Adieux" increased my respect for the composer immeasurably. However, of course Upshaw doesn't do it alone, being accompanied by one of the best piano accompanists I have ever heard. I recommend this album without reservation to any fan of Upshaw or 20th-century French song.

5 out of 5 stars Upshaw shines!.......2001-08-27

This is truly an incredible collection of french chanson and Dawn Upshaw is really in her element here. It's a live recording, but the applause really doesn't interfere with the mood presented. The collection of peices varies by artist, but generally it's a light array of lyrical music. Upshaw's interpretation is fantastic and her pronunciation of the French language itself is incredible, much better than most non-French opera singers I've heard. A wonderful album!

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc.......2003-03-14

This is one of the most beautiful recordings of Rachmaninov songs available. Rodgers and Shelley are completely in sync here, and capture the full range of moods and colors in a well considered sample of the composer's writing for voice. I've long wondered why Rodgers has not garnered "star" status internationally, and every time I listen to this recording I'm puzzled again. To judge from the evidence here, she has everything: clear diction, beautiful legato line, stylistic affinity for Rachmaninov's sound world, and a heartstoppingly gorgeous timbre -- in certain parts of the voice very similar to Renee Fleming's, but without Fleming's tendency to croon and distort the musical line. Indeed, Rodger's ability to marry discipline and profound, complicated feeling makes something special of this recording. Together with Ewa Podles' recital of Russian melodies, which includes some of the songs sung here, Rodgers' Rachmaninov is a treasure. So are her recordings of Howells and Vaugh Williams and Britten.

5 out of 5 stars This sumptuous sorrow, this sweet rapture of song..........2005-11-10

This recording dates from 1998, and the question I ask myself is... why did it appear in my favourite record shop only recently? And why was I not previously aware of this recording?

I'd heard Daniel Taylor first (or at least consciously noted his name) in the recording of Handel's Rinaldo, and thought at the time what an astonishing beautiful and sensitive sound he produced. I began a hunt for any recordings of his, and was unutterably delighted when, because I pestered the aforesaid music shop, a lot of ATMA Classique recordings appeared. (I seem to have answered my own question - the CDs appeared because I confessed to an absolute longing for anything sung by this counter-tenor!)

The recordings on the ATMA label include several with Suzie Le Blanc, another favourite of mine - and I was prompt to grab as many of the recordings as I could see.

This CD, "Tears of the Muse" consists of some of the most ravishingly exquisite songs by Dowland ever composed - and certainly Daniel Taylor's performance of them is the perfect blend of the intellectual and the emotional. Singing Elizabethan music is a little tricky for some in that a) yes, it must be sung in the appropriate style - a voice approaching Dowland in the same manner as Verdi is going to miss the mark by a mile; b) no, a straight and entirely vibrato-less sound which has as its only objective a dead-set on "Target Choir-Boy Timbre" is NOT the ideal here; c) yes, the songs need to be ornamented (ornamentation in music of this period includes sighs, breaths in the voice, the sound of tears, not just gruppi or other such ornamentations); d) no, swooping around like Renee Fleming is not good ornamentation or even good expressiveness.

Daniel Taylor not only knows this - he is an expert exponent. He sings with his heart and soul, not just his vocal folds. His vocal instrument is very beautiful, but without the intelligence he clearly possesses to control that voice, he would not be the singer he is. And beyond mere intelligence lies the ability to capture the listener/audience - many an intelligent singer with a perfectly nice-sounding voice will simply never enravish his/her audience because to do so is a gift that is both the product of hard work and a God-given talent.

          Daniel Taylor has that gift.

I have listened to this CD and to other of his recordings several times, and I shall continue to enjoy them with deep pleasure. The detail, the overall delicacy combined with heart-melting beauty, the whole and sublime work evident in this... I am simply unable to listen to this recording without weeping with that happiness that is so close to sorrow that it almost cuts into one with pleasure.

This is a recording for everyone who loves early music, and if you've never heard early music, this is a perfect CD as your introduction to how it's done.

5 out of 5 stars A beauty to stop you in your tracks.......2000-05-04

I got this CD as a gift from Dan Taylor himself and he would be happy to know that it has become one of the most cherished CD's in my vast collection. As much as I enjoyed Paul Agnew's wonderful recordings of English lute songs, Taylor's raw sincerity and subdued eloquence in the rendition of these songs probably surpass even Agnew's silken polish. The title line for my review comes from Gramophone, I just couldn't resist borrowing it because it is so apt! Most of the songs on this disc (in fact, all but one) are plaintive and sentimental. The choice is fitting because the pure fluid tone of Taylor's voice seems ideally suited to slow melodic lines such as these. I find Taylor's voice to be absolutely remarkable. To my ears, it combines the platinum radiance of David Cordier with the velvety opulence of Michael Chance - a rare combination indeed. As if the beautiful voice was not enough to spark interest, Taylor's singing here is also technically secure and lyrically expressive, ever so lightly adorned with tasteful ornaments. The emphases are all the more potent because they are sparsely used. For example, the second repetition of "Learn to condemn light" in Flow my tears is startling in its sudden roughness... I will never be able to listen to this song again in anybody's performance without expecting them to repeat that same modulation. To me at least, this is how these songs should be sung. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars "Best Classical Album of the Year" Gala de l'ADISQ 1998.......1998-11-04

This outstanding production has just won the "Best Classical Album Of The Year" Award (Félix) at the Gala de l'ADISQ 1998 - the equivalent of a Grammy in the USA. Counter tenor Daniel Taylor, Les Voix Humaines (viola da gamba duo) and Andreas Martin on lute give a unique rendition of Dowland's songs. You can't go wrong and even more, you'll want to get Daniel Taylor's first recording on the ATMA label, Purcell's "On The Muse's Isle" unanimously praised by critics in Canada, the USA and in the UK, as well as every other recordings he will make...
