The team of composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick came up with only six shows--but what shows! In addition to the phenomenally successful Fiddler on the Roof, aficionados usually gush about 1963's She Loves Me and 1959's Fiorello!. The latter turned a not particularly appetizing topic--the years leading to Fiorello LaGuardia's election as mayor of New York--into a great musical. (It even won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the third musical to do so.) Harnick and Bock's versatility was in evidence as they wrote numbers in every Broadway style: novelty, ballad (about sweatshops), duet (the absurdly catchy and funny "Marie's Law"), and, of course, a rousing number that doesn't really fit anywhere but is so good that it simply must be included (Eileen Rodgers's "Gentleman Jimmy"). This may be one of the wittiest, most melodic shows you've never heard. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

technically and artisticly. It didn't win in '59, there is little hope that it will be remembered fondly in '06.
In the end I bought it for archival purposes only and I'm being kind.

a classic, underrated Broadway gem.......2003-11-04
The score, an early collaboration from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (SHE LOVES ME, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) is very strong, and includes several show-pieces like "Politics and Poker", "Little Tin Box" and "On the Side of the Angels".
Ellen Hanley (who had previously been criminally under-used as Polly Bergen's understudy in FIRST IMPRESSIONS) glows in the role of feisty Thea, the sweatshop workers' leader. She has two of the score's best ballads, "'Til Tomorrow" and "When Did I Fall in Love".
Pat Stanley (who earned a Tony for her performance in the disastrous GOLDILOCKS) gets the cute number "I Love a Cop". Eileen Rodgers (who later starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of ANYTHING GOES) sings the showstopping "Gentleman Jimmy", a manic flapper tune. FIORELLO! is a fantastic show in that it has no less than 3 strong female roles.
For those who only started following Tom Bosley's career during his 'Happy Days', the fact that he was a top-drawer musical theater talent will come as a big surprise. Bosley played the entire run of 795 performances. Bosley later made many more successful Broadway appearances including BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and (as of this review's writing) a triumphant stint in the Sam Mendes revival of CABARET.
This lovely reissue on the Angel Broadway label sounds as fresh as paint. An excellent remaster job and an excellent cast album.

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03
Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30
Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05
I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.
Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!
If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)
Wonderful, wonderful stuff!
What a find!!.......2003-06-15
Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.
The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.
One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).
The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".
If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Album Description
In the Name of Love's opening track, "Step in the Name of Love" pays tribute to the R. Kelly radio hit and dance sensation which has spawned a 'stepping' craze all around the country. Waters says, "Everybody loves this song. It was the perfect song for me to record because the melody translates so well to the saxophone. It's just a great party song and people always fall in love with songs like this. I had to do it." "Sunset" is a free-flowing Waters original that resonates with soul. Like R&B/neo-soul geniuses D'Anglelo/Remi Shand, Kim Waters plays all the instruments heard on the track with the exception of the guitar. Waters co-wrote the house-tinged, bass-thumping "In Deep" with DJ Davey D. Check out how his spiraling sax lines bump and dance around the song's seriously funk groove. A stand out track on In the Name of Love is the Kim Waters ballad "All I Wanna Do (Is Please You)" dedicated to his wife Penny. The song features the multi-talented Waters! on vocals and virtually all of the instruments heard on the track."For the Groove in You," another original, is reminiscent of smooth jazz pioneer Grover Washington Jr.- possessing the perfect balance of R&B and jazz leaving listeners rocking to the beat. Waters also features the upbeat "Cross My Heart" penned by fellow chart-topper and label-mate, guitarist Chuck Loeb. In the Name of Love also includes Waters' take on the classic Barry White & the Love Unlimited Orchestra's song "Love's Theme." This gem from the past is sure to bring on some nostalgia as his spoken introduction suggests. Also included is a bonus track featuring a remix of "The Ride" which was a #1 single from Waters' last recording Someone to Love You. Waters and Davey D have really got a lock on their fusion of R&B/jazz and club house mixes.

Sweet and Silky.......2005-04-30
"Sunset" brings on a mood that is perfect at the end of the day for relaxing, unwinding, and grooving. "In Deep" pops with a soulful energy. That sweet soprano sax will bring you to your feet. Or perhaps, your knees. Either way, it's heavenly! "The Ride" is a smooth journey of ultimate bliss. Kim's alto sax is at the center of "All I Wanna Do (Is Please You). This luxurious sound will take you floating away. Plus, seeing Kim perform this live in concert is a gorgeous experience. "For The Groove In You" is funky, spirited, and fun. He seems to be inspired by the spirits of Grover and George Howard on this one. "Cross My Heart" has pizzazz, energy and soulfulness all wrapped up in one! This was recorded with the guitar of Chuck Loeb who always lends a special depth to Kim's songs. The bonus track "The Ride" with the Davy D. Remix is hot as can be!! With a driving beat, one of Kim's best songs is recreated into a new twist. Seeing Kim perform this live will make you jump out of your seat and dance!!
Whether on cd, or live in concert, Kim Waters crosses all generations and all races. His best songs are those that he has written himself. Highly recommended for the smooth jazz sax lover...one of the finest talented musicians of today, don't miss it!! It's truly soul-satisfying!!!

Its very good!.......2006-05-16
There are 3 or 4 songs here that manage to be different from the original in some way, but still good.
One of them is the first track in the album which is "Sunday Bloody sunday" by a band called Pillar... The song has a P.O.D sound to it.. Overall, its pretty darn good, not the best in the album, but very enjoyable.
Another good one is "Beautiful Day" .. This song is very balanced.... manages to sound very different from the original while still doign justice to U2's masterpiece.
The song that definately takes the cake is "40" ... The version this guys managed to put together is absolutely awsome. The album is almost worth buying for this song alone... without a doubt the best track on the entire album.
Other tracks worth mentioning are "Pride (in the name of love)", and "mysterious ways"... The only problem with pride is that they didnt change it much.. It pretty much sounds like the exact same song played by another band... WHICH doesnt make it a bad song obviously, the original is awsome, but compared to the other guys, this song sounds too much like the original....
And about "mysterious ways", when i read that Toby Mac re-made "mysterious ways" i was convinced it would be very interesting... And it is, but some parts of the song fall abit short, specially toby mac's vocals , which arent bad but they do sound flat once in a while.
Another one worth mentioning is "one" by Michael Tait... His voice fits this song perfectly... Sometimes it seems that hes trying too hard to make it different from the original, but its still darn good.
Other than that, there are other decent tracks here like "love is blindness" (the original is an awsome song, but this version falls a bit short), and "gloria". The rest of the songs okay, nothing spectacular...
The only true failure here is "with or without you"... the problem with this song is that it sounds too pop, and completely loses the feeling that the original had... This song almost sounds as if it was re-made by Britney Spears (except this girl in this song can actually sing), which will piss off alot of loyal fans... But if you have a 12 year old girl at home, she'll love it.
In short, its a good cd, and its a good cause. If you can afford it, i say go for it!
It's a great one !.......2006-03-30
And that is precisely what I like about this CD - that the artists don't try to sound exactly like U2. I'm a huge U2 fan, but I think the best thing for artists to do - even when covering others' songs, is to be themselves. The musicians here bring their own flavor to U2's compositions and it makes it richer and more authentic.
At the same time, they don't (for the most part) show an inclination to rework songs so much that their resemblance to the original becomes negligible enough to effectively kill the spirit of the original.
The two tracks that stray the most are "All I Want Is You" (Jars of Clay) and "With Or Without You" (Grits & Jadyn Maria). These two don't meet the standards of other 11, yet they are still both pretty good -- the latter mostly because Jadyn contributes a beautiful voice and offers up a great vocal performance. The R&B/Hip Hop bits by Grits actually work ok at times, but in the end could stand a bit less frequency. Jars of Clay turns up the blues dial a bit too much on "All I Want Is You" - which adds a ton of levity to what was is originally a very profound, almost haunting sound.
In trying to pick standouts I could easily just list 8 or 9, which would defeat the purpose, so I'll just say that I think Gloria and One are real big standouts.
They did a great job on this CD! And that's coming from a big U2 fan!
kien dijo ke u2 no era cristiano.......2006-02-17
Overall, Good Effort for a Great Cause. Ignore All the Negative Energy........2006-02-17
Furthermore, yes, we all know U2 is not a Christian band (I question the validity of a so-called "Christian" music genre altogether, but again, another discussion), but I'm sorry, you cannot deny that sometimes Bono IS talking about Jesus! Here's a line straight out of "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," for example, in case you never paid attention: "To claim the victory that Jesus won." Some reviewers have said that the CCM artists present on this CD are untalented basically solely on the basis of their being Christian. That's a REALLY stupid reason for not liking someone's music. Not to mention doing that means you'd have to hate U2 as well. So what if the cover band/artist happens to be of the Christian faith? OMG, THAT HAS TO BE A REASON NOT TO LISTEN TO THIS CD!!! Please.
So, A Music Fan, Bubba Licious, Thew, and Nate P, and others, take your negative energy elsewhere. Get this CD. The money goes towards a fantastic cause supported and started by Bono himself. Plus, as far as cover songs go, these aren't bad. I've definitely heard much worse! (Cf. The Pussycat Dolls' cover of "Tainted Love"...Just NO!)
