Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin SnelsonCustomer Reviews:

Still Funny.......2007-01-18
DEFINITELY For Sherman Lovers.......2006-08-04
The old favorites sound great (the backing orchestra led by pianist Lou Busch and the "Allan Sherman" singers are terrific). Now, there is a good chance that you've never before heard several of the songs which are available on this compilation. And a number of these are not among Sherman's best. But there are enough good to excellent "unheard" tunes to more than make up for that.
For the die-hard Sherman fan -- who doesn't mind the cost -- BUY IT!
Pricey, but Definitely Worth Every Penny!.......2006-03-23
Well, after a bit of patience, I was able to secure a new copy of the set from Amazon for just under $100, thanks to my tax refund. Though still pricey, after I played the opening bars of "The Ballad of Harry Lewis" in its CRYSTAL CLARITY, I got goosebumps. So after all of my bitching and moaning, I have to say that the set is definitely worth the investment.
Too bad that they didn't include the "Peter and the Commissar", but at least that's available elsewhere on CD. Same with the songs Sherman sang when he voiced the Cat in the Hat for the animated special in the early 70s. And the rumored golf jokes album is nowhere to be seen, and methinks he never actually recorded any of the material before his untimely death in 1973.
The box does reveal that there were a few unreleased tracks that still remain that way due to publishing rights, but there's so much rare and unreleased anyway (and again that CRYSTAL CLARITY) makes up for it.
Happy, happy, happy!!! Now, if they could give the same box set treatment for Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, The Smothers Brothers, and Jonathan Winters (utilizing rare and unreleased stuff as well as completing the unreleased back catalog), then Rhino Handmade will become my label of choice!
What we've all been waiting for..........2006-03-02
One mild issue I have is the arrangement- it's eight albums and lots of other stuff on six discs. It's understandable, I guess, that they had to break some albums up, and I believe all the tracks follow in some logical order, but I have to work it out. The track listings in the booklet can be a bit hard to make out as well, making it a little difficult to pick one song. And while they've been thoughtful enough to include the front and back of every album (and more!), it's a bit difficult to read some through the clear plastic back of the cardboard boxes (which, by the way, slip out of the box a bit too easily).
But all of those are minor external quibbles. It's the music that counts, and it's great. If you've ever enjoyed Allan Sherman, get this set. If you've never heard him, you have a great discovery ahead of you.

Customer Reviews:
Two classics of her late 60s pop era!.......2007-05-23
These are two of my fave Dionne LPs ever, and to find them remastered and paired on a limited edition.... I thought I was dreaming. Rhino has gone all out, packaging, sound, everything.
I know a lot of people prefer the earlier Bacharach stuff, or her later 70s stuff, citing this as easy listening. Nonsense. It's great stuff, and she does Bacharach like no one else could or ever will.
A shame there will be no more in this series.... I was praying for a double-set of Here Where There Is Love and Her I Am.
Splendorous Dionne in two of her best albums.......2007-01-03
One of the most original voices and smartest phrasings I have ever heard on popular music. Her repertoire takes the best and the worst from Bacharach & David team along with some other authors.
'Promises, Promises' is the real pearl in this package, the title song is simply brilliant Bacharach-David at their best, and Bacharach's arrangement is pure fire. Also Bacharach-David's originals 'Who Is Gonna Love Me', and 'Whoever You Are I Love You' and pure gems with beautiful Bacharach's arrangements.
There are also some pearls from the original 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' album and these include the title song as arranged in a collaboration of Burt Bacharach with Larry Wilcox and the single version of the pretty song 'Paper Maché'.
Great arrangers are also present in the package along with Burt Bacharach. Features Peter Matz arranging 'Little Green Apples', the sensational 'Where Am I Going', and the great Armando Manzanero's song 'Yesterday I Heard The Rain' (English version to 'Esta Tarde Vi Llover').
Also features arrangements by the great Don Sebesky on' This Guy's in Love With You', 'Where is Love' and the great Bacharach-David original 'Wanting Things'.
Simply Breath Taking.......2006-07-18
The cream of the crop.......2004-07-23
There are also covers of popular songs of the day such as "Where Am I Going" and "Didn't We" that are superb. If Dionne isn't the Queen of Champagne Soul, I don't know who is. This is lounge music at its finest.
In addition to the brilliant packaging and wonderful liner notes by David Nathan, there are additional bonus tracks that did not appear on the original releases and a ton of rare photos.
The remastering is beyond description -- these recordings sound brand new; crisp, clean, no air/hiss...just magnificent.
This set of music is achingly beautiful. Each song here epitomizes the classic "Dionne Warwick sound," that brand of romantic melodies and arrangements that are sweetly melancholy. Hats off to Rhino for making these classics available again, even if only for a limited time. You owe yourself a copy.
Superb!!!!!.......2004-07-14

Customer Reviews:
The world is wide with many things within, but few so rare as he. God bless Tiny Tim........2007-06-10
This 3 CD collection features Tiny Tim's complete Reprise studio masters and more. It is a limited edition of 3,000.
Disc One features his first album, God Bless Tiny Tim, which is quite wonderful. This album was a big hit back in the day. The disc also features many non-LP singles, as well as a few singles that had been on one of his albums, in a different mix. Most of these singles are also quite good.
Disc Two features Tiny's second and third albums. Album two was titled Tiny Tim's Second Album, somewhat unimaginatively. This is another terrific album, that unfortunately didn't sell. His third album was a children's album titled For All My Little Friends. This one didn't sell, either. This is a good album, but not nearly as good as the previous two. This is probably because Richard Perry, the producer of Tiny's first two albums, was unavailable to produce most of the album. Perry came up with some imaginative arrangements on Tiny's earlier albums, but Gene Shiveley, who produced most of the children's album, seemed content to just feature Tiny alone with his ukelele. I should mention that "The Viper", from Tiny's first album, is repeated here and it's the same version, not a new recording.
Disc Three begins with five previously unreleased masters, plus four radio commercials for Tiny's first album. These masters are about as good as anything else he recorded for Reprise, so it's a mystery why they weren't released. The bulk of the disc features many, many demos that Tiny recorded. Most of these demos were recorded as songs considered to possibly be included on his children's album. Nearly all of them just feature Tiny and his ukelele. These aren't all the demos he recorded for Reprise, a few were left off because there wasn't enough room for them.
This collection is a most have for any Tiny Tim fan. (All 3,000 of us!)

Fun Part of My Young Adulthood.......2006-11-30
What I like most about this CD is how it doesn't preach, but just takes pot shots at marijuana use and culture. It has an innocent edge to it as it was recorded before the medical marijuana issue made things so much more serious (as in the serious conditions people treat with it). And, of course, it is very funny! And part of the joke is that it neither demonizes pot use nor makes any effort to dignify just getting high for the sake of doing so.
If you are into 70's nostalgia, this is a nice period piece, although not so dated that it isn't funny. As a matter of fact, I think it is funnier as a period piece than when it was contemporary. My only regret is that the paperback book that goes with it wasn't re-issued, reformatted to be the size of a CD case, with the CD. But that could still happen in the future-- hint-hint. There could be a slip case that would fit the CD package as it is now and the book. The book wasn't long anyway, so I'm sure it could be done.
Have fun! :-{D}

Live At Hammersmith Odeon
Black Sabbath , Dio , and Ronnie James Dio Manufacturer: Rhino Handmade ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000Q8QDE8 |
Product Description
Released just weeks after The Dio Years, this single-disc Rhino Handmade edition of the original double LP, Live At Hammersmith Odeon, features Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice getting hot one December night in London during Sabbath's 1981 tour for Mob Rules. Previously unreleased, the concert spotlights Sabbath as they storm through 14 of the Dio-era's best, including "Neon Knights," "Heaven And Hell," "Children Of The Sea" and "Country Girl." The band also performs several pre-Dio classics including "Paranoid," "Children Of The Grave" and a white-hot version of "War Pigs." Live At Hammersmith Odeon is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies. Live At Hammersmith Odeon completely sold out on the day of release. In the 9 years of Rhino Handmade, this is the quickest a title has ever sold out.Customer Reviews:
Dio and Sabbath At Their Finest!!!.......2007-06-25
You Snooze, You Lose! But There STILL Is Hope...........2007-05-24
Even though this was released AND sold-out as a numbered limited edition of 5000 copies only on May 1st 2007, it was available for pre-sale at Rhino Handmade since early April 2007, and did NOT go outta print till it's first official release day, so the "snooze, you lose" motto sorta applies here. But more on that later, let's get to the actual disc.
Man, this CD is more than I ever coulda hoped for a huge life-long Black Sabbath fan like myself. I probably didn't even have this recording before as a bootleg (I don't recognize it audio-wise). Rhino majorly cleaned up this recording. True true soundboard, remastered excellently, this thing deserves to be in stores next to Live Evil! In fact, it might even be better than Live Evil....well maybe that's pushing it, but it's way up there. Thing's long too (79:52)! Those rare live tracks, Country Girl, Slipping Away, as well as Iommi's shortened solo on this make it so worthwhile. Even Dio on this one says "P**S OFF, I'm gonna burn in Hell with all of you!" instead of the usual "Go Away, I'm gonna burn in Hell...". I've got a lot of Heaven And Hell live versions with Dio & he never said it like THAT before! Cool! I do wish they did the entire "Slipping Away", instead of going to the drum solo in the middle. That part where Tony & Geezer trade licks on the studio version is great live, I have a boot of them doing it all somewhere, but not on here like that. It's just too bad they stopped doing "Sweet Leaf" live by this time too, that would have been the cherry on top. Oh well, can't have it all.
Concerning though the new battle between Black Sabbath fans "Which Is Better:Hammersmith or Live Evil?", truthfully "Live At The Hammersmith Odeon" is a great "addition" to any Sabbhead's library, but it's not as "essential" as Live Evil. First off, Live Evil is classic due to it's 25 year old existence this December (wow, has it been that long!). If Hammersmith came out in 1982, then Live Evil in 2007, maybe. But that's not the case. Second, Live Evil is a fuller representation of a complete Black Sabbath concert, LATHO is not. Lemme explain. When Castle Communications reissued/remastered Live Evil in 1996, they edited out things like Ronnie banter, crowd noise, and some of Tony's solo to make it fit on ONE disc, instead of the original two. LATHO was done in the same way. Don't believe me, think about it, how long is the crowd applause in between the tracks....it's two or three seconds each...that's not realistic. Ya mean Ronnie didn't talk to the audience at that show between songs? C'mon. And Iommi didn't do a full blown eight minute plus solo either? Sure they did, Rhino Handmade just edited it out from the master to make it fit on one disc, while Live Evil was always meant to be a two record/two CD release, hence as much filler as possible resulting in a complete show, solos, banter, crowd, and all. But don't get me wrong, LATHO has some of the best editing I've EVER heard on a live recording! But the editing is quite apparent to fans like me with a ton of boots in our collections already. But trust me, in a way it's sorta nice to get to the point with this recording, compared to times when I have to wait 30 seconds to get to the next song on Live Evil (LATHO's editing is way better than what Sanctuary Records did on Disc Two of Sabbath's Past Lives CD), but the average fan will never notice, but to most of us it's apparent pretty early on yet acceptable due to the quality it was done here.
Finally, Live Evil was recorded in the intent of a worldwide audio release, LATHO was not. It's more as a library recording for the band and management. Even though the remaster job on LATHO is excellent, you can tell that the instruments weren't mic'ed for that purpose. Also, some parts of LATHO wouldn't cut it for a major/first live representation of a band like Sabbath. The feedback during N.I.B., the "trying to get the girl in the front row to sing Heaven And Hell and failing", and other bits like that show this is basically for collectors only, hence why it's on Rhino Handmade at only 5000 copies and not on Rhino's main label at your local store in millions.
But all this shouldn't be stopping you from trying to find a copy, but now it's gonna be a little harder and more expensive to do so. Thanks to Amazon's "New & Used" section or perhaps EBay, this album is still listed for purchase by independent sellers who knew this would sell-out fast, so if you really want it, thank these people for offering it to ya still, even if their prices are somewhat, well, insane. But who knows, since this release was Rhino Handmade's quickest selling out title in their history, maybe it will be re-released in that dreamed about "Black Box II" CD Box Set we Sabbath fans have been demanding. Stranger things have happened....especially to Sabbath! Thanks for reading!
P.S.: If you look at the images section on the page's above left side, you'll see my CD booklet back cover explaining the position of the actual numbering on each disc created. The notes explain how you found it and where. Enjoy and thanks again!
What Live-Evil should have been.......2007-05-21
The thing that jumps out at you is the power and volume of Vinnie Appice's drumming.I saw the Mob Rules tour in L.A. in 1982 and Appice's drums were so loud I could feel the bass drum in my bone marrow.
This starts out with a kickass version of "Neon Knights" with Tony Iommi's excellent guitar work.
"N.I.B" is next. I dont really like Dio's interpretation of the old Ozzy numbers. His endless oohing and aahing during Iommi's leads gets on my nerves. When Iommi is shredding you don't need Dio constantly crooning "my, my, my" over the solo.As far as the straight lyric style of the song itself, it just doesn't need such melodramatics.
"Children Of The Sea". Very good version as Dio sounds strong and the band hammers it out.Appice's drums are so awesome. He had to have been at the top of his game on this tour.
"Country Girl". Never heard this one live before as they had eliminated it from the set by the time I saw them.Sounds bassically the same as the studio version except for a slightly different guitar solo.
"Black Sabbath". This is ,in my opinion, the Ozzy era song that Dio sounded best on.He kept the melodramatics to a minimum and didn't try to change it. Iommi's guitar intro has a creepy feel to it and he shreds on the solo at the end.
"War Pigs". This is an awesome version if you can get past Dio's melodramatics during the opening chords. Geezer Butler's Bass and Appice's drums really drive this song home. Iommi plays a completely different solo on the lead break than the studio version.Dio sounds weird on it but he is belting it out at full power.
'Slipping Away". Quick vehicle for Appice's edited drum solo.
"Iron Man". Played at sludge speed with Appice's fills and rolls sounding great.Iommi's riff never sounded heavier.Dio sounds alright but I get the feeling he didn't really like this song that much.
"The Mob Rules". Excellent high energy version. Iommi really rips on this.
"Heaven and Hell". Album and tour's showcase.Sounds edited due to time constraints.Excellent guitar solo by Iommi ina jazzy vein.Dio sound great but the audience participation part sounds weak due to the fact that the crowd noise is so low. Soundboard recording, no doubt.
"Paranoid". Necessary song I guess. Unfortunately for Dio, it would be like somebody other than Robert Plant singing Stairway To Heaven. He does his best but he just engages in needless melodramatics when he should just sing the tune.Don't get me wrong, Istill like it. You just can't ignore the inevitable comparisons.
"Children of the Grave". Real good version as Iommi's bone crunching riff destroys everything in its way.Dio sounds good on this one as he presents a straightforward delivery.
All in all a great recording capturing this line up at the peak of its powers. All audience banter and song introductions are not present due to time constraints which is not a bad thing bercause Dio was not a "I'm a regular guy, party animal dude just like you" kind of performer anyway. His song introductions were always kept short and dignified. The opposite of Ozzy.
It's a shame that only 5000 of these discs are in print because it would probably sell a lot more than that. I'm just glad I got one.
I'm sure its a great disc.......2007-05-08

Best recorded vocals of Warwick.......2007-01-08
Yeah, the theme of "Valley..." was done with Previn. The rest is done with Bacharach! Write the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland to finally acknowledge the musical legacy of Dionne Warwick. It is long overdue!
Splendorous Dionne in two of her best albums.......2007-01-03
Surely the title song of 'Valley of The Dolls' pairs her best renditions, an impressive and strong performance I have never forgotten.
Two interesting Bacharach-David originals also come from this album: 'As Long as There's an Apple Tree' and 'Do You Know the Way to San José'. Also features an alternative version of Jimmy Webb's 'Up Up and Away'.
Finally, this album offers one interesting song which Ms. Warwick sang in the San Remo Festival (Italy): it is 'Silent Voices'. It's a pity that the Rhino Records team did not have the good idea to include the original 'La Voce del Silenzio' also sung by Ms. Warwick in Italian.
The other album in the package is 'The Windows of The World' and the title song is a must, one of the most inspired by the Bacharach-David team. Well I'm sorry to say that 'I Say a Little Prayer' is one of those worst lyrics penned by Hal David. Other smash hit was 'Always Something There to Remind Me'.
Some non-Bacharach-David include 'Somewhere' from 'West Side Story', the beautiful André Previn's 'You're Gonna Hear from Me', and the standard 'Taking a Chance on Love'.
A Gem!.......2006-03-19
