    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Funny and tuneful.......2005-10-24

And really, what more could you ask for from a musical comedy? Almost every single song in Oh, Brother! is top-drawer material, in both music and lyrics. Composer Michael Valenti manages to draw lush ballads ("How Do You Want Me?" "I To The World") as well as raucous comedy numbers for the chorus ("Revolution" and "It's A Man's World") from this material every bit as well as Richard Rodgers did back in the 1930s with The Boys From Syracuse. The music covers a variety of styles, from barbershop to pop, mixed with a twinge of "Eastern" sounding music.

The lyrics, by Donald Driver, are just as clever. Somehow Driver manages to be funny and completely true to the characters. For instance, in "How Do You Want Me," Saroyana's pathos and desperation come through in such hilarious lines as "How do you want me - pale or pink/Upon the hour? Up on the sink?" Yes, we laugh, but it's really quite sad that this woman is reduced to begging her man to love her.

And the cast is simply incredible. Full of Broadway stars back when they were just beginning their careers, Judy Kaye, David Carrol, Harry Groener, and Mary Mastrantonio are all terrific in this show. There are a few cases of overacting among the supporting roles, but it's excusable in a show of this nature.

I know that it's difficult to take a chance buying a show album unheard (what if you end up with another Walking Happy?), but I promise you that this CD is completely enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars Oh no no no no no no!.......2004-12-02

Beg to differ, but this was one of the most unintentionally insulting Musicals ever written.

While the story of two sets of twins separated at birth is clever (the plot is as clever as any from the "Arabian Nights:" Naturally, it would be, seeing how it was based on Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors"), the lyrics are juvenile and very politically incorrect, while the music is mostly forgettable.

Songs like "Opec Maiden" and especially "Revolution" will have you hoping that no one else knows you're listening to this insensitive material. Even the names of the characters will have you cringing: "Fatatatatatima?" "Ayatollah?" Even the show's tagline is odd: ". . . . Musical Comedy Breaks Out in the Middle East!"

By the way, this show closed after three performances. The critics were right about this one.

But I'll bet the "camel" in the show (played by Steve Warner) was pretty amusing . . .

5 out of 5 stars Oh Brother! What a Joy!.......2001-07-21

A fun musical that is not afraid to be silly while it is both musically clever and cute. The Valenti/Driver team has done us all a disservice by not following-up this true musical comedy with many others.

5 out of 5 stars A loud and funny album.......2000-11-28

Okay, the reviewers trashed this show, but the matinee preview audience I was seated with LOVED it. Fast, loud, and funny with an attitude exemplified by the first night program title page in ARABIC! That attitude pervades every number in the exceptional score presented by the entire exceptional cast. The score is bright, the lyrics witty and knowing and the performances stellar. Of particular note is the 11th hour number "A Loud and Funny Song," and the title song. It's fun, full of great performances (can enough be said about Judy Kaye?) and well worth the investment.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhh! Bach.......2005-01-31

This two CD set is a wondeful collection of some of Ormandy's best Bach transcriptions. The transcription of the Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor is one of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard (and I've listened to a ton of music). Add the Tocata and Fugue in D minor and some of the other Ormandy/Bach greats and this is something that every lover of classical music should have in their collection. I'm sorry to see that this album is out of print. What a shame.

This CD includes some works by J.S. Bach's sons performed by a full orchestra. Very charming music as well. Particularly the piece by C.P.E. Bach. A good introduction to the Bach sons and the transition away from the baroque towards the stil galant and classical styles.

I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond comparison.......2004-02-04

I have been listening to this album since I was only months old - going on 30 years now. My parents bought it on LP, and played it for me when I was young, and it was always on of my most favorite records. It is simply the most amazing collection of transcriptions and recordings I have ever heard, period. Listen to "Passacaglia and Fugue for organ in C minor" just once, and it will remain in your memory forever. "Toccata and Fugue for organ in D minor" is Bach's work of genius, and this remains the only recording I have ever heard by a full Symphony - transcribed and directed by Ormandy himself, no less. It is truly a shame that this recording is out of print on all mediums now.

      4 out of 5 stars Smashing Album.......2005-11-11

Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26

I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15

This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.

      4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25

The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.

Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.

Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.

I purchased Giada Valenti's Italian Signorina for my mother for Christmas. She absolutely loved it. Giada has a beautiful and soothing voice. If you like jazz, Giada's music has a little jazz flavor as well. Although there aren't many songs on the CD it is definitely worth purchasing. She takes various classic Italian songs and does her own excellent interpretation of them. I am looking forward to her next album and I am planning on attending her concert in Manhattan as well.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......1999-05-10

This album is the original cast recording of a terrific off-Broadway musical. The cast is wonderful (look at the names!!), and the songs are great. The show is a revue of poems about love from all time periods, put to music by Michael Valenti, who also wrote Oh Brother! and Mademoiselle Colombe, as well as countless classical pieces. This CD is great
