About SAYAT NOVA - The great Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova was born in 1712 in the village of Sanahin, not far from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Named Haroutiun Sayatian at birth, the great musician and lyric poet is remembered by Armenians as Sayat Nova or King of Songs, an homage to his stature and prestige. In his early teens, the Sayatian family moved to Tbilisi, which was an important center of Armenian culture, music, and literature. During this period Sayat Nova started to compose, play, and sing. He traveled through the Middle East, Persia, and India. Besides his superb command of the Armenian language, he was proficient in Georgian, Persian, and Azerbaijani, which allowed him to reach vast audiences. The cosmopolitan community of Tbilisi embraced him and adopted the young Armenian genius as one of their own. The known body of songs attritubed to Sayat Nova numbers around 220, but the true volume of his work may have reached the thousands. About ARMEN BABAKHANIAN - Prize-winner at several of the worlds most prestigious international piano competitions, including the Leeds, the Van Cliburn, the Guardian Dublin, the William Kappell, the Gina Bachauer, and most recently the World Piano Competition, pianist Armen Babkhanian has captured the imagination of audiences and critics alike through the intensity and honesty of his performances. Mr. Babakhanian has given recitals in Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain, and the United States. He has appeared as soloist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Irish National Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, DC), the Dallas Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the Moscow Philharmonic, and the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Loris Tjeknavorian.
