Unique, diverse, rich.......2006-09-21
Man oh man oh man; I cannot fathom these 1 star reviews by people. There must be SOMETHING they just DON'T get about this album, because it's brilliant. I won't go into specifics, but let me just say that I own every single Cure album and song ever released, from Three Imaginary Boys in '79 to Self-Titled in '04, along with the Join the Dots (B-Sides and Rarities) release in '04. In any case, my point is that I know ALL Cure. Everything. Many fans will compare this to other Cure releases such as "Disintegration" or "Pornography" or "Faith" or "Wish" and diss the heck out of it...just seems bizarre and strange to me. This album has so many eclectic features and and an incredible range of diversity, yet it is still held together by all things Cure. The songs are downright beautiful. For people to call this slosh and self-indulgent is just plain ignorant. To attack the lyrical content is downright immature. So what if he's singing about cheating? Each song is unique with a wide array of themes. Pay no regard to the bad reviews. You can trust me as someone who has everything The Cure has released that this is a more-than-worthy addition to your collection. I actually prefer the second half of the disc more than the first, but still love the first half as well. Do it up and treat your ears to a real work of art.
I tried.......2006-09-09
I was a huge Cure fan in the 90s. When this came out I really really wanted it to be great. I listened to it many times. I remember none of the songs and didn't like ONE song on the CD. If you want an underrated Cure CD, go get Wish. Don't even bother with this one. Completely forgetable.
Much Better Than You're Being Led To Believe.......2006-09-06
Wild Mood Swings is not a bad cd. Many of the negative reviews come right out and admit to trying to pull the rating of this cd down. Why? It usually comes down to being stuck in the past. There are a lot of people who cannot accept Robert Smith doing anything outside of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me or Disintegration.
Wild Mood Swings is different. It's upbeat in some places and downbeat in others (ok, ok, I know that describes Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me but the instrumentation is different here); it's not your typical Cure release but I like it. It reminds me some of The Top, a much more psycho and, in many cases, just as maligned an effort.
WMS also reminds me of many of the silly music that made up the mid-80's. There are lots and lots of great keyboard sounds to go around and a ton of great guitar. What's not to like?
Singificantly better than many diehards will tell you........2006-08-22
An album that is generally dispised by fans of the Cure, "Wild Mood Swings" is as different from everything else in the band's catalog as can be, and a the time of release it was a bit jarring. It's an album of acoustic guitars and bright production and of open space, and while it was significantly different from anything the band has done, a decade after its release, it's pretty clear that the album, taken out of the shock of its appearance, is a decent record in its own right.
Of course, from the opener, you wouldn't know it'd be full of bright songs-- "Want" is classic dark Cure stuff-- ringing bass, clean tone melodic electric guitars, and noisy leads supporting a vocal that turns as fierce and jarring as anything Smith has done. But there is a sense of space that's obvious in it that permeates the album, and the record's brightness is obvious throughout, whether in the form of explosive pop songs ("Mint Car", a positively ecstatic explosition of new love), bizarre blues/funk tinged horn driven pieces ('Gone!"), moody, acoustic Bowie-styled reflections ("jupiter Crash") or just downright bizarre (more of the record than you'd guess-- Latin-tinged "The 13th" defies explanatio and the lower register vocal of "Club America" is in direct opposition to the usual Cure). Admittedly, amidst all of this there's a couple bunts (propolsive rocker "Trap", somewhat dull pop song "Strange Attraction") and yeah, the bright production can get irritating in its lack of subtlety ("Round & Round & Round"), but there's a lot to be heard here, just put aside your preconceived notions of what the band should be at the door.
"Wild Mood Swings" found the Cure crippled-- longtime guitarist Porl Thompson and drummer Boris Williams, who had both been with the band for a decade, left, and leader Robert Smith seemed to have felt painted in a corner stylistically. This one is definitely quite a detour, and if you're not one to like your band's drifting from their core sound, this isn't one for you. For the rest of us, "Wild Mood Swings" is one of the more intriguing things the band has done.
Unfocussed Slosh.......2006-05-17
No matter how often and how many times I've tried to listen to this album I cannot get more than half way without getting so bored with it that I'm compelled to change discs. The Cure has been my all-time favourite band since 1985, and still is to this day (2006), but this album is simply unlistenable drivel. It's not that objectively speaking, the album is the worst thing since Celine Dion, but, standing against the background of such groundbreaking classic Cure favourites as Faith, Pornography and Disintegration; Wild Mood Swings falls right out of the swing and hits itself badly on the head, concussing and haemmorrhaging to death on the hard earth of reality.
Some tracks are catchy enough, especially the openers Want, Club America and The 13th, but nonetheless come over as sounding so similar to tracks already done wonderfully before (respectively Open, Harold & Joe and The Lovecats) that they're less like original variations than pale caricatures of them. From there it's all down-swing as the album does a bland, unfocussed and uninspired take on jangly Brit-style pop and ballads. Songs like Mint Car sound so obviously like Smith is trying so incredibly hard to be happy and poppy and fluffy (when he's probably just really drunk) that you can't help cringing when you listen to them. Smith himself has said this is his least liked album The Cure has done of them all.
If you're interested in The Cure but new to them - avoid this one, and stick to one of the certified greats, such as the above mentioned titles.

Album Description
Taken from her Top 5 album Tissues & Issues, the song is the fourth track to be released from the gold, 250,000-selling LP and was written especially for Charlotte by Fitzgerald Scott, Gary Smith, Maureen Collin and Kalenna Harper. Featuring an exclusive remix by co-writer Gary Smith, the song is clearly one of the album's most personal and memorable moments and perfectly showcases Charlotte's powerhouse vocals. The single also contains `Calling You', Charlotte's unique interpretation of the haunting song from the critically acclaimed film Baghdad Cafe. BMG. 2006.

One of the Better Tracks from "Tissues and Issues".......2007-05-20
MOODSWINGS (To Come at Me like That)is probably one of the better songs from Charlotte's new album. Still, it's not worth your money! Her voice has a rasp to it, and it's also very breathy. It must come from her constant smoking and drinking (alcohol, of course). The album has become a FLOP, and this is only helping! Sorry Charl, but not worth it!

Customer Reviews:
My All-Time Favorite CD by Cindy Alexander.......2005-11-26
I own all of Cindy's CDs and I must say this is my favorite. I love the lyrics! I especially turn it up loud on Smash! This is a CD I like to play at work because I am bad about hitting the remote to skip songs this is one of the few to include Sarah Brightman's that I will let play in it's entirety. I feel that Cindy is a very talented artist who is not given enough credit.!
An absolute masterpiece.......2005-08-11
This album is simply, if I may borrow the title of Track 1, a Masterpiece. Smash is an insightful journey into the heart and mind of a world class musician. Through beautiful vocals, intelligent lyrics, and well crafted melodies. I just cannot get enough of I'm So Sad That You're Happy and Idiot Child. I get the opportunity to hear many artists, and Cindy is certainly one of the best around today.
Only Love for Smash.......2005-07-21
So it's been 4 years since Cindy's last album and it was well worth the wait. This album offers something for every mood. Including deep and heartfelt ballads like Only Love and Tour Song. It has rocking tracks like Smash and Carnival Junkie. As well as generally impressive and insightful tracks like, Idiot Child and Heaven Knows. This is a great album you will want to listen to over and over from the first song to the last.
Best Artist in LA.......2005-01-07
Cindy Alexander is absolutely the best emerging artist in LA. Both albums (See Red and Smash) grow on you after a couple of listenings and shortly thereafter the songs are stuck in your head. I've seen a zillion concerts over the last 3 decades and thinks she is on the edge of becoming really big. Her CD's back it up, she's great and a hell of an insightful writer and talented songstress. She has a style all her own. If you like artists like Stevie Nicks, Sara McLachlan, Karla Bonoff and Sheryl Crow you'll love Cindy.
An aptly-titled masterpiece..........2004-09-09
It is rare for an independent recording artist to produce a debut album that enchants both fans and critics alike. It is rarer still for that same artist to produce a sophomore album that tops its predecessor by leaps and bounds. Such feats are rare indeed ... but not impossible, as Cindy Alexander proves on SMASH, her stellar sophomore CD. On SMASH, Alexander sideswipes the dreaded "sophomore slump" with a clever, impossibly catchy disc filled with soon-to-be pop/rock classics.
Each song proves that Alexander (equal parts Dorothy Parker and Chrissy Hynde) has got everything it takes to rocket into the stratosphere: Charisma, supreme vocal chops, catchy, clever lyrics, and flawless musicianship. There are no duds on SMASH. Cindy's killer combination of witty lyricism and smashing vocals drives up-tempo numbers like "Masterpiece," the album's title track, "Carnival Junkie," and "Right On" straight into listeners' brains. Yet Cindy shines on slower ballads like "Only Love," "Tour Song," and "Heaven Knows." Pick a favorite tune? Impossible.
The kicker? Cindy is an intelligent, witty, considerate, and GRACIOUS recording artist who actually answers e-mail from her legions of adoring fans (I speak from experience). Bottom line: Buy SMASH. Buy several copies of SMASH and send them to friends who appreciate good pop/rock music. It'll be the best $10 you've ever spent.

Simply amazing.......2007-07-03
I somehow had overlooked this band,as have most people in the states. But,after trading cd's with a friend from California,he turned me on to these guys as well as Gotthard. I have since tried to fill my library with anything from HS that I can find.I'm not going to give my opinion of every song, but if you want a top notch cd to play over and over, buy this one,as well as any of their other cd's,and enjoy some of the best music that you've never heard of!
WOW!!.......2007-05-24
Harem Scarem - WOW! What a great album. This is a superb collection of beautiful melodic rock songs. You have to listen to this music if you're at all interested in skillful yet catchy melodic rock in the vein of Giant, Extreme, Hardline etc. These guys can do no wrong! Great playing all round especially the awesome guitars. Killer vocal melodies and harmonies. Absolutely perfect production. All their albums are great so it is very hard to rank them but this one has a nice balance of rock and melody and songwriting and magic. This genre of music has been done alot but there are a few standout acts who really know what they're doing and Harem Scarem is one of them. Enjoy!
HOMERUN!!.......2006-01-10
i picked this up after reading reviews posted here. ya know, it's really hard in the good ole usa to get exposed to music that has what i need to get off. that being:1.really good lead and back-up vocals 2.great musicianship 3.well written songs. this one has all of the above. the guitar work is brutal, harmony vocals as good as you've ever heard, and the production is grade A. i'll never understand why a band of this caliber doesn't get promotion and airplay in the states. you really need this one.
One of the finest AOR/hard rock albums ever.......2005-08-09
Simply put, Harem Scarem is a phenomenal band who can do no wrong when it comes to creating hard-rocking, catchy, stylistically diverse rock music. This is melodic rock refined by some of the greatest songwriters in ANY genre, and to top it off, the band is absolutely on fire. Listen to Harry Hess' amazing vocals on "If There Was A Time" - and he says he was singing with a cold that day! Or Pete Lesperance's smoldering guitar work on closing track "Had Enough" - brilliant. From start to finish, this is an unapologetic rocker through and through, but is so melodic and jam-packed with great choruses and guitar riffs you won't be able to get it out of your head for months. I just discovered this a few years ago, and boy am I glad I did. Fans of Def Leppard, Extreme, Whitesnake, Hardline, Journey, Van Halen, Queen, and pretty much ANY melodic hard rock will find a lot to enjoy here. Tracks range from Leppard-style arena anthems like "Stranger Than Love" to bluesy rips like "Jealousy", all the way to the acapella "Just Like I Planned" (my least favorite track, but still really good) and the slamming "Saviors Never Cry". It's all over the map but still retains that melodic core. Two thumbs wayyy up for this classic record.
Best Tracks:
"Stranger Than Love" - One of the best choruses I've ever heard in my life. Nothing too intricate, just a great slab of melodic songwriting and the obligatory awesome solo.
"Change Comes Around" - Probably the heaviest track here, this one could go toe-to-toe with the Crue or Scorpions or any of the other "heavy" melodic rock bands. Great anthemic outro too.
"Jealousy" - Bluesy, great vocals by Harry Hess. This track smokes from start to finish but still has that hit-potential.
"Sentimental Boulevard" - Should have been a #1 smash! Check out that great chorus, and again great guitar work. Sung by drummer Darren Smith.
"Mandy" - Soothing, note perfect guitar instrumental that keeps the album flowing seamlessly.
"If There Was A Time" - Incredible vocals, amazing guitar solo, and a chorus to die for. Spiritual, hooky, original - there's so much to say about this awesome tune. One of my all-time favorite Harem Scarem tracks.
very good.......2005-02-05
I'm not as fanatical about this album as most Harem Scarem fans. I like it, but I don't think it's their #1 album. "No Justice" and "Saviours Never Cry" are excellent bonecrushing rockers and alone are worth buying this CD.

The brilliant Brodsky Quartet is at it again, offering entertaining, virtuosic collaborations with stars of the pop music world with which both classical and popular music lovers will be equally entranced. Whether it's lolling strings underpinning Meredith Monk's enchanting, wordless syllables or assisting Jacqui Dankworth in a torch-like ballad (The Abyss) or nervous pizzicati to go along with a song by Sting, the ear is constantly being treated to a new surprise: if a quartet of strings and a voice can do it, they do it here. Errolyn Wallen and the Brodskys offer a languid ballad called "Daedalus," while Bjork puts her usual, original (if vaguely tiresome) stamp on "I've Seen It All." The CD opens and closes with songs sung by Elvis Costello whose unique, vibrato-filled voice remains remarkably expressive; the last number, "Real Emotional Girl," is a Randy Newman song in which the strings of the Brodskys feel and put across the singer's anguish in equal partnership. A one-of-a-kind CD. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Errollyn Wallen will break your heart and put it back together again........2006-05-01
Errollyn Wallen's track, Daedalus, will break your heart and put it back together again. This is a quiet, absolutely beautiful testament to her power, verve and finesse as a composer. Genius.
Appropriate Title for Sharp Performances on a Bumpy Road.......2005-06-06
The Brodsky Quartet remains as audacious as ever with their new recording. This time out, the intensely dramatic string quartet spent time in select UK schools where they composed new songs with schoolchildren. Those are presented here alongside the quartet's arrangements of songs by more established writers such as Elvis Costello, Sting, Björk and Ron Sexsmith. The result could have been a mess, but it's not. Far from it, it's a soulful and sometimes challenging album adhering together rather tenuously as an avant-garde theatrical album. There are several peaks and valleys throughout, though luckily the high points make this a worthwhile disc to get.
Sting's performance of his gypsy ballad, "Until...", sounds especially influenced by Kurt Weill, as does Björk's familiar dirge, "I've Seen It All", from her 2000 cinematic foray with Lars von Trier, "Dancer in the Dark". Jacqui Dankworth lends a languorous vocal to Kate Curtis' and Will South's "The Abyss" and the more funereal "Song" by Daniel Monk. And a nice surprise is the Gershwin-inspired "I Never Went Away" by Richard Rodney Bennett, though it does feel a bit out of place among the more experimental music. Truth be told, some tracks are plain odd, such as Meredith Monk's "Gotham Lullaby" with its random yelps and minor-chord la-la's and Errollyn Wallen's meandering, overlong "Daedalus", a rather pretentious art song. The schools provide two of the highlights here: "Swearing at the Moon" by Arieh Miller of JFS in London, and Venus Flytrap by students from Blatchingham Mill School in Hove. Both songs are performed by Ian Shaw, whose biting vocal mixes well with the discordant string arrangements. Elvis Costello frames the recording with the jaunty opener, "My Mood Swings" and his closing cover of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl", a slow, heartbreaking ballad with Newman's trademark observations. The quartet itself performs with their brio intact, applying a lot of color and texture to the songs.

good compilation.......2006-09-05
This is a fun cd by a very personal sounding roots rock artist.
The songs all have a sense of humor yet with a pretty raw, stripped down approach.
My favorite song is "my first band" which cleverly incorporates riffs from classic garage bands of the 60's.
Whats cool about this artist also harms him. This guy really marches to the beat of his own drum.
hot licks.......2003-04-06
b.v. is great, too bad he is not better known. i am trying to find the album that has the 3rd rock from the sun title. what is it? cause that tune is the greatest.
Heartfelt, intelligent pop with a clever, humorous edge.......2000-04-05
A really *stupendous* collection of Vaughn's recordings from '84-'92. Incredible pop music that blends elements of different genres (rock, folk, rockabilly, country, blues, surf, soul) effortlessly. Vaughn & company can really rock 'n' roll, in the best sense of that term... they remind me a bit of the Young Fresh Fellows, and the Morrells (now the Mummies). Lyrically, Vaughn is quite clever, but not in the cloying sort of novelty-song way that wears thin after a few listenings. Tracks range from the whimsical-in-a-Jonathan- Richman-sort-of-way ("Growing a Beard", "Rhythm Guitar") to the more sardonic ("Dressed in Black", "She's Your Problem Now"), to the sadly silly ("Too Sensitive For This World", "The Man Who Has Everything").
Guest musicians abound, but never intrude. Peter Holsapple (ex-dB's) can be heard playing mandolin, Alex Chilton (Box Tops, Big Star, Panther Burns) sings some background vocals, as does John Hiatt.
I'd hesitate to call Vaughn a singer-songwriter, even though he wrote all but four tracks on this disc, and two of the remaining four he co-wrote. Roughly half the tracks on the disc are by The Ben Vaughn Combo, while the rest were recorded with a reasonably steady lineup and occasional guests.
A few of the tracks here are rerecordings of earlier songs, whose original production Vaughn was unhappy with. I'm not enough of a Vaughn-o-phile to know if this is a Good or a Bad Thing. Either way, the versions on this disc are superb!
Best collection by the best artist from Camden NJ - ever!.......1999-07-13
I've been enjoying Ben Vaughn's music for almost 15 years now -- ever since a "Good Friday" gig at a tiny little bar on South Street in Philadelphia. Live, the original BVC made you remember why you enjoyed pop music and AM radio in the late 60s and early 70s -- especially when they dug deep into their amazing bags of covers to perform "96 Tears" or a trombone-enhanced, Beat-era reading of "Journey to the Center of Your Mind." Ben's encyclopedic knowledge of many genres of 60s pop and rock music is showcased throughout this compilation.
An engineer's comments.......1999-01-31
As one who had the pleasure to work with BV in the cool shade of Camden, I can't express what an omission it would be if your music collection did not include some of his music. Everyone mentions humor; I'm digging the stuff that's got a little emotion behind it, and that's most of the stuff. Ben would never want a 5-star rating on his work, I suspect, because that would mean a lot of gussy'n up, which he doesn't like to do. What I remember is not redoing vocals much, not adding bags & bags of reverb, using real instruments instead of synths, and a lot of tinkering with instruments other people ignore, such as acoustic bass, glockinspiel, and the occaisional hubcap. To all, I pass on a comment Ben shared with me once: "If it's got more than 3 chords -- it's jazz!"

Brian O'Neal....great jazz pianist.......2007-03-15
Awesome is just word to describe Brian O'neal's second album. Others include exciting, mellow, cool, melodic and hot! You can tell who his musicial influences are by listening as his fingers run across the keys. Brian is a star.
Simply Awesome..........2005-08-29
Brian has a unique talent that I do hear everyday. He can switch to different styles. Each selection sounds great. I usually can't say that I like all of the selections on a CD, but Mood Swings has changed that for me. I did like each and everyone of the tracks on the Mood Swings CD. I can't wait to hear more from this Artist. He has a very unique style.
Loved It.....And then some............2004-02-11
After listening to the CD on four different systems repeatedly since receiving it (I listen for something different each time), I've come to the conclusion that I don't like it, I LOVE IT!! For me, the style is a mix between Alex Bugnon, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson with a touch of Joe Sample/Kevin Johnson/Bobby Lyle. It begins with Holland Residence, reeling you in to an ear-pleasing yet sensual journey. Once in, you're hooked. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Yome'! It has a Marion Meadows feel to it with oooohhhh so much seduction (I think it's the echo of the snare). I played it in my office and received this reaction several times, "Who's that? That sounds nice, mello... J always have something good playing in her office!" They call my office, Jazzy J's Place for obvious reasons.... Love the chord changes also - that's what kept me tuned to you mostly during the performance! Thank you for mixing the song selections! Heard some CDs where the first song is great and the rest is downhill, snoozeville, which ever you prefer.
If ever back in Nashville or close to the area, count on me being there!
You asked a simple question and I answered with a book! My love for music goes deeper than a plain answer such as, 'I liked it or it was good,' with no explanation as to what I liked or what was good about it!
This Will Swing Your Mood Alright.......2004-01-23
Whether you've just had a tough day at work and need to relax or you're sipping on a glass of wine with that special someone, this is the perfect cd for those situations. The songs are all smooth and comforting. My favorite is "Train of Thought", which features flugelhorn in the background. Others that I enjoy include "Holland Residence", "Art of Life", "Sandman" and "Samba Sauce". If you enjoy smooth jazz pianists such as Joe McBride, Brian Culbertson or Kevin Toney, you will want to check out "Mood Swings".
Mood Enhancing Melodies.......2004-01-08
The music that is offered on this cd came directly from the soul of Brian O'Neal. This cd can quite literally change a melancholy mood to mellow and joyful. Having personally met Brian, one can feel the sincerity and true love that he has for his music. He is a sincere, caring and talented individual and that all comes across in his music.
Mood Swings puts you on a beach with a nice summer breeze sipping on your favorite drink or lying by a fire just chilling - it is truly a MOOD ENHANCER.
This is his music and his alone - no imitations here. Can't wait for the next release. Will definitely be in the audience when he is the HEADLINER and not a solo presentation.
Best to you Brian!!!!
