Amazon.com essential recording

Surely, Renée Fleming has one of the most beautiful voices to be heard anywhere today. It combines velvety warmth, creamy richness, soaring radiance, and flawless purity, and seems to flow out without effort, every tone impeccably centered and in tune, capable of almost too much variety of color and nuance. Fleming's breath control is incredible; she can spin out long, arching phrases and build up climaxes with thrilling intensity. The program of this recital displays Fleming's vocal and dramatic gifts to full advantage, and includes both familiar and lesser-known arias from Italian and French operas. Although some of these are not in her repertoire, she clearly feels close to them. The three opening Puccini favorites from Gianni Schicchi, Madama Butterfly, and La Bohème are a bit fussy and over-inflected, hardly suited to the characters' simplicity; but, from then on, Fleming seems completely at one with both her tragic and her lighthearted heroines. She captures their warm inwardness, rapture, passion, ecstasy, and desperation; darkening and lightening her voice at will. Her top notes soar gloriously, her trills laugh. The orchestra is splendid, supporting her all the way and sounding wonderful. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Renee.......2007-03-28

I just love Renee Fleming's voice. It reminds me so much of the fabulous Anna Moffo - my personal favorite since childhood. My mother played Anna Moffo records for me while I was a tiny bit in my crib. So try to reprogram oneself after hearing such loveliness in the universe. Both ladies have a creamy voice, elegant phrasing and classical beauty. I agree with the prior reviewer that every soprano should record "O mio babbino caro". And if Renee did not record it, well then we'd be missing her version.
The more that I listen to Renee's music or see her in recitals, the more I adore the lady. The standouts on this disc are "Casta diva", "Lo son l'umile ancella", "Je suis encor tout etourdie", and "Ah! Je veux vivre", "Signore ascolta", etc.

5 out of 5 stars One of Miss Fleming's absolute bests!.......2006-05-09

This is definitely one of my all-time favorite Renee Fleming albums if not THE favorite! Her voice totally shines in every single aria on here, and she seems can totally drag you into the world of each of the characters. What can I say? Ms. Fleming just never fails to impress me. Everything that she sings she seems to be able to bring something unique to it.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing cd and a great introduction into the world of opera.......2006-04-20

I recommend this cd for those who want to get into opera but don't know where to start. Fleming tackles a diverse range of styles and never disappoints. Her Un bel di vedremo ranks up there with the best sopranos and is the standout track for me.

5 out of 5 stars The New La Divina.......2005-11-22

Renee Fleming is the most sheerly beautiful voice in opera since Montserrat Caballe. Her Casta Diva is stunning, and the high note at the end of Merci jeune amies is pure virtuoso. I love her Puccini, Massenet and Verdi as well. Fleming said that she doesn't class herself amongst "the greats", but I do!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2005-09-30

This album says soprano standard repertoire all over it, but Renee will knock your socks off with her interpretations of these standard hits. Although she doesn't sing much Puccini, her Puccini arias are to die for. Her "Un bel di vedremo" (Madama Butterfly) gives me chills everytime I hear it. Her French arias are also breathtakingly gorgeous. Micaela's aria is so warm and beautiful, as is Juliette's. This is a fabulous recording, and I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Opera.......2004-11-28

This CD serves as a great beginner's guide to opera. there is plenty to choose from on this CD. Placido Domingo starts off the CD with his trademark "Celeste Aida." Next, Alfredo Kraus and Giuseppe Taddei sing "Au fond du temple saint," in Italian instead of French. Renata Tebaldi follows in "Ebben? ne andro lontana." You can't have a opera CD without Luciano Pavarotti, and you get him in "Io son sol...Ah dispar, vision!" from Manon. A great trio from La fille du regiment, "Il faut partir" follows, starring Beverly Sills, Fernando Corena, and Grayson Hirst. Jose Carreras and Renata Scotto follow in the Brindisi from La Traviata. Montserrat Caballe graces the #7 spot in "Oh nube! che lieve" from Maria Stuarda. Franco Corelli is excellent is "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Alfredo Kraus returns again in "Dalla sua pace" from Don Giovanni. This is one of my favorite arias on the CD. Carlo Bergonzi follows in "Die campi, dai prati" from Mefistofele. Franco Corelli follows in the role he was made for: Manrico's "Di quella pira" from Il Trovatore. Montserrat Caballe and Siegmund Nimsgern sing in one of the only German arias on the CD: "Und du wurst mein..." from Arabella. Gundula Janowitz sings in "Dich teure Halle," the other German aria on this CD. I can't believe Nicolai Gedda isn't on this CD more than once. He sings "Merci, doux crepuscule" from La damnation de Faust. Mirella Freni comes next in "Si. Mi chiamano Mimi" from La Boheme. My favorite tenor, Giuseppe di Stefano comes in the next two clips: "E lucevan la stelle" from Tosca, and, with Maria Callas, "E il sol dell'anima" from Rigoletto. How can this great recording end? With Pavarotti in "Tu che a Dio" from Lucia di Lammermoor of course.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Potpourri.......2004-09-12

Do not be misled by the incredibly low price on this album; the recording quality is quite good. I would have liked more information in the liner notes (especially the year of the performance), but that is a minor quibble when compared to hearing some of the best opera stars of the last century for less than a matinee movie ticket.

So, indulge and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars THE SORT OF MUSIC THAT BOSTRIDGE'S VOICE WAS MADE FOR.......2002-10-09

Ian Bostridge has one of the most beautiful voices on record, and he has consistently shown courage and wisdom in selecting material that will extend and develop his gifts. Not all of this material has been a perfect match for his young and soaring tenor voice, notably some of Schubert's more dramatic "lieder". In contrast, nothing could be more perfectly suited to his voice than this generous and beautiful collection of traditional English poetic settings by Britten, Finzi, Grainger, Warlock and others.

Bostridge brings more than just a beautiful tone and a subtle musical phrasing to these songs. The challenge any intepreter of English songs has to face is that, in contrast with the pure syllables of most continental languages, the complex vowels of "Southern British English" are formidably difficult to render attractively in song. It's not just a question of singing them prettily. Think how accurately the pronunciation of a word like "house" or "bath" can betray someone's geographical and social background; our vowels are a caste-mark as well as a means of communication. But somehow Bostridge himself, in his fruitful partnership with Julius Drake, manages to transcend our socio-linguistic divisions and deliver these songs in a way that places no barrier between the listener and the music.

The material is wonderful in its own right - a collection of lilting pastoral airs and occasional boisterous ditties. They are at one and the same time ancient and modern, embracing at once the mutual cross-fertilisation between classical and "pop" sensibilities that has always underpinned the best of English music. Even the most trivial of these songs (e.g. "Jillian of Berry") are memorable, and some of them (notably Sir Charles Stanford's chilling musical setting of the Keats' poem, "La Belle Dame Sans Merci") would not have been beneath Schubert himself.

It has been fashionable over the generations to belittle British classic music. "The land without song" England was dubbed, as the sleeve notes poignantly remind us. This CD is a healthy reminder that the global success of English popular music in the latter four decades of the 20th century did not appear out of nowhere; it was built on a solid foundation of past accomplishment that it was for too long fashionable to dismiss. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Artistry beyond measure.......2002-09-20

This disk is a wonderful treasure. "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing" is an exquisite song that you should not go another day without hearing. I am speaking literally.

Mr. Bostridge's interpretation of Browne's song is amazingly compelling. His ability to express goes beyond that of most other singers - even some great ones. He notes the problems in singing in English (the "extra" vowels, the English vs. German approach to word painting, etc.) and I have to say he triumphs on this disk.

As he also notes, this is NOT a recording of a recital program nor are the songs "English" in nationality - the songs are just set to texts in the English language. I had not heard of some of these composers, but I am enthusiastic in saying that every song on this disk has something very nice to recommend it - at least at the voice and hands of Ian Bostridge and Julian Drake.

I must say a few words about Mr. Drake's playing. Overall he is simply incredible. He has a beauty of tone and a singing style that is not in anyway mere accompaniment. It really isn't even a partnership. It is a unity of artistry that creates this single entity, a song. There aren't many that can pull this off and Mr. Drake should be treasured for this ability. Just amazing artistry.

Please get every disk that Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake have done together. You will thank me for recommending this if you didn't know this already. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on this disk or any comments you have about Bostridge and Drake.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Enjoyable.......2002-02-09

I already liked Ian Bostridge, but I thought "English songs" would be rather light and without substance. But I have fallen in love with this CD and never tire of it! I was already an admirer of Vaughan Williams, Britten, Finzi, Warlock and Delius, and I'm glad for this introduction to other composers as well. Also, much beautiful poetry is chosen, from Shakespeare, Yeats, Rossetti, Keats, and others, and each is treated with careful consideration by the composer, *partnering* music with poetry rather than simply enhancing or overshadowing the lyric. Bostridge seems to have the perfect voice for this music, light and charming when appropriate, heart-breaking at other times, always an engaging storyteller. He obviously understands intimately each word and note that he sings. The listener can hear his facial expressions and body language! The English Songbook is a beautiful collection of excellent craftsmanship, and one of the best CDs I have.

5 out of 5 stars Do Not Be Deceived By His Look Of Innocence.......2001-10-14

Just look at Ian on the cover photo of this CD. He's sitting there looking coy, playing with his finger, hair a little mussed, with a very cute boyish smile, as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong mommy, honest." Well he has done it this time.

This CD was my first exposure to Ian Bostridge. I bought it because I was very surprised to know that one of my favorite poems, the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats, was set to music. I spent 17 bucks for one song, and ended up cashing in on 23 others.

To Gratiana Dancing and Singing quickly became a favorite, as did Bold William Taylor. This last one was my first realization of Ian's gift of storytelling. Somehow he is able to make his voice sound like a woman, namely Sally Gray, and the narrator, and the macho Captain, all in the same song. The multiple personalities come out to play similarly in The Death of Queen Jane. I am lulled into quiet reflection and relaxation when Ian sings the Cradle Song.

Check out his CDs of Schubert Lieder, also accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian may be even more at home in German than he is in his native English! Julius is at home with Schubert, especially the water songs, and we are at home listening to this wonderfully weird, warm voice paired with masterful piano playing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best English-Song CD's available.......2001-09-12

Unlike the reviewer "A music fan from California, USA" I realize that this is not a recital program of music (as even noted in the liner). This is though, an unequaled collection of some of the most beautiful English Songs ever. Ian is on top of his game and J Drake plays, well, I don't have the words. He never fails to impress with his skills. Each key under each finger sings! Back to Ian. As a professional tenor, I am in awe of his voice. It is tender, moving, all the things you want in a good recitalist, and (unlike any of the opera tenors I can think of) it is note perfect. Yes, there are times when his voice seems a little light for the song he may be performing, but it is passionate and caries the pathos of each note/word he sings. BUY THIS CD - you will love it for ever!

He was handsome, hot, had a rich, distinctive voice and was a vulgar SOB, but you had to love baritone Lawrence Tibbett's audacity in falsifying a composer's intentions while he made the music as exciting and flashy as possible. This two-disc collection take from the Stanford University Archives covers his famous roles in Carmen and Barber of Seville, plus his forays into pop tunes and even his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner." It's an interesting time capsule since Tibbett touch on so many media--even movies. But even though most of these recordings predate his vocal decline in the 1940s, it's mostly for fans only. --David Patrick Stearns

Buy it and learn what it was to sing when singing was a national pastime, not a yelling contest.

5 out of 5 stars Lawrence Tibbett: An artist for all generations........2005-10-20

Lawrence Tibbett left a priceless legacy, not only to all baritones who would come after him, but to all singers: It's alright to color outside the lines; it's OK to interpret a role from your own emotions; dare to be different! This is what keeps opera vibrant and viable! From the swaggering Toreador to the chilling Iago to the tender "Under Your Spell" to the glorious "Glory Road," Tibbett proves his point. David Stearns,in his mean-spirited blog says, "for Tibbett fans only." Right! You will be! Just listen to this album!

This all-Busnois disc is an early music fan's delight, especially as performed by the four accomplished singers of the Orlando Consort, who convey both the purity of Busnois' music and the many surprises lurking within it. The Mass is the "big" work, almost half-an-hour in length. But interest never flags since the music is unfailingly inventive, the voices perfectly matched, the rhythms buoyant. The Mass is preceded and followed by selections of chansons, a hymn, and a pair of motets. In these too, the 15th-century master of polyphony constantly startles with unexpected twists and turns of the long musical lines. His typically adventurous abrupt changes of rhythm, harmonic twists and turns, and pauses for dramatic effect are all rendered with aplomb. Excellent sound. Top-notch production values include a handsome booklet in readable type with texts and translations, even color reproductions of period paintings. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, yet unknown, works.......2006-11-27

Sources indicate that Antonie Busnois (c. 1430-1492) was one of the most significant composers of the late 15th century. Despite this, recordings of his works, which include two masses, as well as numerous motets and chansons, are relatively few. I have seen his works appear on a handful of renaissance music anthologies, but this is the only release, of which I am aware, which solely features the work of Busnois. Busnois was, more or less, a contemporary of Dufay, and there are some similarities between the two composers.

First of all, this music is fantastic, and it appears that Busnois' reputation (that is, during the 15th century) was well deserved. The most notable item on this program is the "Missa O Crux lignum" which is dramatic, yet beautiful, in every regard. Even though the Mass lasts for nearly half an hour it is continuously engaging and is full of beguiling harmonic and rhythmic twists. The same holds true motets and chansons accompanying the Mass. Listen to the lively syncopations in the Chanson "Resjois-toy, terre de france" (Track 4) as an example. Or listen to the rhythmic buoyancy and leaping intervals of "Vostra beautre / Vous marches du bout du pie" (translation: "Your beauty / You are walking on tiptoe") as an additional example of Busnois' inventiveness (Track 13).

As expected from the Orlando Consort, the music is excellently performed and authentically realized (to the best of our present-day knowledge). If you happen to be unfamiliar with this group, the Orlando Consort is a four member vocal ensemble consisting of two tenors, a countertenor and a baritone, specializing in the performance of medieval and renaissance works. The ensemble has a warm sound, where contrasts between the different melodic lines are emphasized. Or in other words, the ensemble never creates a uniform "wall of sound" that is typical of some renaissance music performances. In any case, the distinct style of the Orlando Consort suits this repertoire well. It should also be mentioned that the sound is near audiophile quality.

In conclusion, this is an outstanding release, and I will return to it often (especially the Mass). If you enjoy the works of Dufay, or have enjoyed the Orlando Consort's previous releases, this disc is well-worth your attention.

    Highly recommended.

When I first heard this album, especially "God Bless Africa" , I
got chills just as I did when I saw "Brother Bob" in Chicago in
          the seventies. Buy this CD!

          5 out of 5 stars awesome .......2004-08-01

Some of his albums have rough and strange passages, but on the whole Alpha Blondy has the classic wail in his vocals, and sings with passion. One can hear the sneer in his voice when he sings Armee Francaise in 'Yitzhak Rabin'...you can feel the attitude, even the pain, like when Bob Marley sang early in his Wailers lead career before the sound became heavily produced in studios. I think Alpha Blondy is one of the greats of reggae. Even patchy albums have at least two to three serious powerhouse tracks, enough (for me) to wanna get it regardless. Merci is no different; it's a fantastic album except for an odd foray into rock which while strange is not unpleasant. God Bless Africa is absolutely brilliant!!

5 out of 5 stars As Good Or Better Than The Yitzhak Rabin Album.......2002-07-31

Instrumentation is superb. Vocals by Alpha Blondy is crisp and clear. Any weakness? Yes. For me, track 1 sounded a little offbeat, perhaps, because it is very hard to do better than the Ojays original version.

This is a very solid CD. Guitars, horns, and drums (oh the drums!) come alive on this CD. The impeccable arrangement and masterful delivery of many tracks, especially 3, 5, and 6 shows Alpha Blondy is the real Reggae master from Africa.

It is hard to listen to this CD sitting down. I dare you to listen to track 3 sitting down. Relax your grip, and let go of your money this time. Buy this CD. You will have no regrets!

5 out of 5 stars Pulsating Beat and Invigorating Tao.......2002-07-18

If this CD doesn't get you moving then you are dead. Period. This music is a good and lively experience. Les Bon Temps Roulez.

          Yes I,
this is a very good cd release by ALPHA BLONDY. MERCI, is sure to keep you dancing or just nodding to the beat of the crucial REGGAE riddims here. Actually, when I heard the tune "Wari" which re-works the music from the O'Jays "For The Love Of Money" I knew I had to have this cd as soon as possible. You will not be disappointed!!
