5 out of 5 stars A treasure in the Brahms lieder catalog.......2006-09-29

Acclaimed as she was as a lieder singer, Jessye Norman showed a special affinity for Brahms. She made no less than three complete recitals of his songs, more than any other singer I can remember except Fischer-Dieskau. Not every lied is a mstepiece, and most are either folk-based or imitate folksongs in their simple strophic design. This can make for tiring listening after ten songs or so, but Norman's plush voice is to richly suited to Brahms's romanticism that it's hard to pull away.

Her initial recital on Philips with Geoffrey Parsons (1980) was a greatest hits collection, and Norman was wise not to overlap too many on her later two recitals with Barenboim. She was rather grand on that first disc. Here, she sings with great delicacy and sensitivty. In many ways this is her best Lieder recording, despite the unevenness of the material. Don't expect Mainacht or the famous lullabye or Von ewiger liebe. And I wouldn't advise anyone to tr and listen to this two-fer straight through. That said, Barenboim equals Norman in his artistry, so all told, this release is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Some of Brahms' best by an incomparable singer.......2006-01-25

Ask someone about Lieder, meaning basically German "art songs"
and he or she will immediately think of Schubert or perhaps
Schumann. Brahms is just not that well known for his songs,
and it's a shame because they are among his best works.

Jessye Norman is famous for her artistry in Lieder; I still
recall hearing her in recital over twenty years ago. This is
a fabulous recording; you will fall in love with most of these
songs on first hearing. As a bonus, the two record set actually
includes full texts and translations. whereas the trend
these days is to omit those and you're lucky if the company
offers them "on line". This is among the most treasured recordings in my
huge collection. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-12-24

This is a wonderful album and should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Lieder. I use to study how she works her magic with a song, and it is worth digging into a single piece to see how she does it.

5 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL.......2000-07-12

I have been waiting for years for this two CD set to be released. I have had the recording on vinyl since the 80's and, for whatever reason, DGG did not release it on CD til very recently. For fans of Brahms' songs (there are 52 of them here), for fans of Jessye Norman's magnificent soprano, for fans of Daniel Barenboim's pianism, this is an essential album. To make it even more enticing, the price, online, is quite low.

5 out of 5 stars Not Surprising Surprise.......2005-06-05

I've been collecting Bonney CDs for about a year, and I hesitated about this one because I didn't want another "piano only" accompaniment. Well, that was foolish. I am very interested in song, in melody, in the "memorable" part of music, and this was certainly memorable. Apart from the first number, I'd never heard any of these in recital or concert. They've all grown on me, and I'm constantly humming them. That's the point. That's why I loved the Operetta album. There's something familiar, but there's something totally new. Some of Mendelssohn's conventions have been totally discarded over the years, which is why it's important to hear them now. Great singing, as I expected. Wonderful piano, as I expected. And now (how many years after this was recorded?) I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Mendelssohn's lieder get strong advocacy here. .......2004-10-06

This exquisite CD was welcomed on its first appearance in 1991 by one critic as "the most satisfying we have yet had of Mendelssohn lieder". On all counts, it still provides an hour of total satisfaction. Less well known (with one exception) than his Songs Without Words and more numerous are his songs WITH words. Yes, the ubiquitous "Auf Flugeln des Gesanges" is here, leading off a generous selection which includes three songs composed by Mendelssohn's sister Fanny. Spring Songs abound; a particularly lovely one is found on Track 17. Lovely phrases, with flashes of coloratura, conclude the two stanzas of the Romanze (Track 21), extended phrases which Miss Bonney negotiates with great skill.

Recorded in an airy, warm Berlin venue, singer and accompanist are a delight to hear. The American soprano and the Australian accompanist ("He's the greatest," Elisabeth Schwarzkopf once whispered to someone I know) combine to provide the strongest possible recommendation for the lieder of Mendelssohn.

5 out of 5 stars A superb album - also includes songs of Fanny Hensel........1999-10-01

Barbara Bonney and Geoffrey Parsons have delivered a sensitive and lovely reading of Mendelssohn songs from varied opuses. Ms. Bonney's voice is clear, silvery, and perfect for the music. Mr. Parsons' accompaniment is everything that could be desired. When I played one of the songs for my Lit and Rep class, one student asked who the pianist was, and commented that "he made the introduction sound almost like a string quartet was playing."

Included (although not noted in Amazon's layout) are several songs by his sister Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel. I would love to see this pair produce a whole disk of her songs!

5 out of 5 stars Pure beauty.......2002-04-04

I've just discovered the beautiful voice of Gundula Janowitz. These Schubert Lieder are delightful and lovely. I'm not an expert on Schubert recordings but I think anyone would love her renditions of these songs.

5 out of 5 stars The subtlest art of Gundula Janowitz.......2001-07-15

Gundula Janowitz is one of the most special singers to have appeared on recording studios - her voice has an etheral quality that is expressive by its own nature and her performances in opera, oratorio and concert hall deserve highest praises. When it comes to Lieder, demands on singers' artistry and expression are intensified. Many fans of Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau may find this disc disappointing - "it is only a beautiful voice". In fact, this is a disc that gains from repeated listenings. Once Christa Ludwig said that the art of Lieder singing is a most subtle art - the art of creating an atmosphere of spontaneity and naturality so that emotions can flow easily and, if the listener doesn't get the impression that he himself can sing it - then it was a bad performance. And that naturality is exactly what Gundula Janowitz achieves here: everything sounds like beautiful singable music that comes from the heart and goes to the heart. Of course, individually, those songs have been sung with quite more distinctively. For example the Wiegenlied D498 doesn't have this "just for my baby" atmosphere Sarah Walker creates in her Hyperion recital, An die Sonne has only the silvery atmosphere of the moonlight, but not the intense yearning Margaret Price brings to it (again on Hyperion) and I thought that, in Im Frühling, Cheryl Studer, with the same pianist, finds the bittersweet atmosphere that lacks here. However, on the whole, the sums of the parts is greater than the individual songs. On repeated listenings, one notice that Janowitz' care not to disturb the purely musical expressive elements of these songs is not devoid of vocal inflections and tone colouring - only they are of the subtlest nature. The performance of Du bist die Ruh on this disc has the most extactic and sensuous reading by Janowitz and Berthas Lied in der Nacht has a richness of description that, nevertheless, never disturb her purest stream of heavenly tone. I have to confess that the idea that each time this disc seems more interesting and beautiful to my ears is a prove that it is a superior recording that should be in every collector of Lieder performance discs. The recording, however, lacks some naturality and not all the harmonics of the piano are faithfully recorded. It is unnecessary to praise Irwin Gage - his partnership with singers have always been a model and so it is here.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely voices in lesser-known songs and duets........2001-05-24

Mendelssohn is said to have preferred composing his "Songs Without Words" to composing, as it were, songs with words. Nevertheless, he set at least 80 poems to music. Ten of them are here, together with one composed by his sister Fanny. On this CD they are allotted to Judith Raskin and her accomplished accompanist George Schick. The same artists also present ten Mahler songs, recorded at the same sessions in June 1965. The other artists present duets by Brahms and Schumann, recorded in 1974.

These are lovely voices, and the accompaniments are perfectly audible. Most of the items are distinctly under-represented in the current CD market. In lieu of program notes and biographical material, the enclosed booklet provides full German/English texts. Provided you don't expect to hear masterpieces, to hear every word, or to be spell-bound, you'll enjoy this 77 minute recital.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful performances of interesting repertoire.......2001-01-26

Lieder programs consisting entirely of songs to texts by Goethe are not uncommon. An Amazon search reveals at least half a dozen currently available CD's. This CD specializes by limiting itself to a single composer, Schubert, and within that composer's work it focuses mainly on songs that would be sung by women. Thus, we hear a large selection of Mignon songs from Wilhelm Meister (some texts in more than one setting), several of Gretchen's songs from Faust, and the two Suleika songs, which, strictly speaking, are to texts by a female friend of Goethe's, but which were published with his work. So, while we miss out on some really famous songs like "Erlkonig", "Der Musensohn", and "Wandrers Nachtlied", we do get "Gretchen am Spinnrade". We also get the opportunity to hear two different settings of some of the Mignon texts by the same composer at different stages of his life. So even if you feel that your collection of Goethe Lieder is already well-stocked, this CD is likely to contain new material.

As if this weren't enough, these 1976 performances by Arleen Auger are very beautiful. The control and tone quality are excellent through all the registers, and each word is expressed beautifully. According to the CD liner notes (supplied in English, German, and French), Ms. Auger made over 200 recordings during her lifetime, so her voice is likely to be familiar to many. But for those who have not heard her, the light lyric is reminiscent of Elly Ameling in its clarity, particularly in the higher register, but has its own distinctive sound.

As on most Berlin Classics recordings, texts for the Lieder are supplied in German only.

5 out of 5 stars A unique singer remembered........2004-10-22

Few recordings made during lieder recitals of more than 50 years ago appear for the first time on the market nowadays. This distinction is accorded to Elisabeth Schumann (1888-1952). The recordings are taken from a New York Town Hall concert of 1950, where her accompanist was Bruno Walter, and recitals given in South Africa, Easter 1951, where her accompanist was Hubert Greenslade.

No other singer could make me believe, as Elisabeth Schumann did, that singing was as natural for humans as it was for birds. It does not matter that the beautiful silvery timbre is here a little dulled, nor that the vocal production and breath control are under careful limits. Indeed, Hugo Wolf's "Wie glanzt die helle Mond", depicting the old woman imaging how it would be when St Peter met her at Heaven's Gate, somehow gains additional poignancy in this performance from the last year of the singer's life.

Bruno Walter, still favoring arpeggiated chords in 1950, accompanied Elisabeth Schumann in 19 settings of Goethe lieder. The remaining tracks date from a South African tour a year later and reproduce slightly better. The singer still had the ability to color the voice and produce a wide dynamic range. Applause has been edited out, except where it breaks into a song's final moments.

A regret is that so many years had to elapse, as was the case with Gerd Puritz's biography of his mother, before this material was issued. Few are likely to remember a singer who retired from opera in 1938, and fewer are as interested in lieder recitals as flocked to hear this singer in the 1950s. A benefit is that the singer's granddaughter, Joy Puritz, with access to letters and family photos, can provide such a scholarly and balanced appraisal to accompany this 74 minute memento. Excerpts from Lotte Lehmann's glowing tribute to her friend and colleague are included in Joy Puritz's notes.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring the Schubert Lieder -- Goethe Lieder vol 2.......2003-10-14

Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) set the poetry of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) to music more often than he did any other writer. On two occasions, in 1815 and 1821, Schubert tried to interest Goethe in his music by sending him copies of the settings. Unfortunately, Goethe failed to respond.

This budget-priced CD is the second in a series of a proposed complete set of the Schubert songs that is devoted to Schubert's settings of Goethe. The CD consists of lieder written specifically to be sung by women, a relative rarity in Schubert.

The album consists of 24 songs. The compiliation includes Schubert's song, "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel" D. 118, written when Schubert was only 18 with its spinning piano accompaniment and vocal line of frustrated sexuality. This is great music in brief compass. With it, Schubert essentially created the form of the art song and of modern popular song as well.

Throughout his short life, Schubert turned several times to setting the short poems written for Goethe's novel, "William Meister" (1795). These works are known as the "Mignon" lieder, as they are sung by a young child bringing romance to the cold world of reality. Of the 24 lieder in this collection, 12 are various settings of the "Mignon" poems Schubert composed at different times. They will repay repeated hearings. Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf are among the later composers that set the "Mignon" poems to music. The interested listener may enjoy comparing Schubert's settings with those of Schumann and Wolf.

There are two wonderful songs on this CD whose texts are not by Goethe. These are the "Suleika" songs, D. 720 and D.721, written by Marianne von Willemer (1784 -1860), a romantic interest of Goethe's late in his life. The Suleika lieder are among the best that Schubert wrote.

The album also features some light, flirtatious songs with mild sexual double-entendres such as "Schweizerlied" D. 559 and "Die Spinnern" D247.

The Disc features Ruth Ziesak, soprano. Ms. Ziesak appears on other discs in the Naxos Schubert songs project. She has a light, expressive voice which fits well with the songs in this collection. Her accompanist is pianist Ulrich Eisenlohr, who also serves as the artistic advisor for the Naxos series. Eisenlohr's gives his piano a predominant role in many of the songs. Tenor Christian Elsner is featured in a number of the songs and is an outstanding singer in his own right. The CD features thorough program notes and texts and translations of the songs.

For anyone wishing to explore Schubert's lieder in depth, this disc, and Naxos' Schubert series, is an outstanding place to begin. The low price makes this series especially appealing to music lovers on a tight budget.
