Emigration

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
In a bright blend of modern composition and folk material, electronics and folk instruments, Cserepes composed and realized a modern folk opera about Hungarian emigration to the Americas at the turn of the century. Since its original release, some of the electronic sounds may seem a little dated, but the execution and completion of the project is still quite solid--a seamless mixture of new and old that allows a chiming synth gamelan to glide effortlessly under Márta Sebestyén's folk songs and ragtime piano to mesh tooth to tooth with the duda (bagpipe). Even though the songs are all in Hungarian, there is a beauty and an edge to the music that allows the listener to understand the old proverb embodied in this marvelous recording: "To emigrate is sad. To return is no joy either." This sometimes bittersweet, sometimes funny musical says it eloquently. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Definitely something to remember.......1999-11-01

I watched the movie, and remembered it BECAUSE of the music. Superb !!! Exquisite combination of cello and oboe makes the central theme (and track) something to be remembered for your whole life. I really recommend it !

5 out of 5 stars "The Secret Agent" by Philip Glass.......1999-06-16

This, in my humble opinion, is one of Glass' most ingenoius works. Set to the athmospheric surreality of 19th century london, this album seamlessly juxtaposes traditional melodic harmonies with colorations that are distinctively Glass. I ould recommend this record to any audionphile or Glass aficionado

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-03-15

I took this CD out of my library just today and decided I have to own it. I have never heard harmonies like this - they sound almost medieval; minor and major weave together in a musical tapestry that makes you want to weep. Listen to this as you read, "Irish Hunger" and you just may feel the presence of your celtic ancestors whispering in your ear.

          Album Description

An outstanding encapsulation of the immigrant experience. Raise a glass to the obsessive compulsive, music lover. On a trip to Rockford, Illinois, archivist Christoph Wagner was led to room after room of teetering boxes, stacks and sheer mountains of old 78s. `Here in these catacombs`, he writes, `the whole ethnic underground of America was deposited.` From them came 'Stranded in the USA', an indispensable, broad-ranging, exhaustively researched view of the immigrant experience. Recorded between 1922 and 1959, the songs are sung in the languages of virtually every major national group that arrived in the New World. At turns playful and plaintive, they bemoan the sorrows of leaving home, of lost hopes and tenacious dreams, of despair and optimism, and they tell of discrimination and opportunity, city slickers and country bumpkins, romantic conquests and the inevitable clash of cultures. This is social history from the ground up: two- and three-minute distillations of the human spirit served up by th likes of Irish orchestras, fado musicians, Scandinavian folk groups, Puerto Rican conjuntos, calypso singers, Greek bouzoukis and Balkan strings - to name but a few examples. A labour of love-cum-audio documentary, Stranded is enhanced by extensive notes containing biographical data, musician rosters, photos, illustrations and partial song translations - plus two substantial essays by Wagner that place the music and the time into crystalline perspective. Librarians, ethnomusicologists, archivists, music lovers - take note. Stranded is a goldmine that provides education and entertainment in equal measure. It deserves an award. Trikont. 2005.

          Album Details

Ireland, Germany, Poland, Italy and Switzerland Had the Highest Quote of Emigrants, but also Bohemia, Serbia, Croatia, Finland, Norway and Greece Had to Complain an Exodus of their Population. Most of the Emigrants Moved to the USA. From the Melange of Multiple Cultures of the Old World Melting with New Influences, Emerged Own American Traditions. The Emigrants Made their Very Own Experiences to the Topics of their Songs, Reflecting the Whole Range of Human Emotions, from the Unbounded Hope to the Deepest Grief of Homesickness. There Are Songs Depicting the Farewell as a Traumatic Experience, Others Are of Exuberating Optimism and Cheat in a Snooty Way with the Clumsiness of the New-comers, the Greenhorns.

4 out of 5 stars very diverse music.......2005-10-11

This is a very strange album. It's got Marta Sebestyen singing love songs, what sounds like a chorus of Hungarian youths rapping in unison, a couple great industrial dance pieces, and strange yet appealing ragtime & honky tonk pieces with people talking in the background. I loved all the Muzsikas albums with Marta Sebestyen singing (for all us non-Hungarians out there, I think it's pronounced SHEH-behsht-yain, where yain rhymes with plain) so I got this one because it had her name on it. The two Sebestyen songs on it turn out to be on other albums, and they were some of the soft love songs I'm not as fond of, but I think the album is very cool, and I'm glad I have it anyway. It's supposed to be a description of the Hungarian emigrant/American immigrant experience, as they go over the sea, come to the new land, and work and generate fusion musical forms in it (this is where the ragtime and jazz & industrial come in). Since the styles are so varied, there's probably at least one song on the album that anyone will like (although I won't guarantee about the rest), but they still all seem like the work of one person or group, I mean they don't sound completely random. They're just all very different. I still love 33 Boilers and the other track like it, they sound like people hitting a bunch of pipes in a fast and exciting way, almost similar to crystalline music. In fact, hearing those two tracks first got me into goth industrial music and now I'm a huge fan of Apoptygma Berzerk, Alan Replica, and Assemblage 23. So if you're a fan of industrial or eurodance, check out this album and Muzsikas' album The Prisoner's Song, with Marta's pure, almost crystalline voice, the lovely blaring bagpipes (they've got extra vibrations all over them just like synthesisers and organ music), and Peter Eri's nice, low, almost growly voice. Enjoy!
