Since returning to the bluegrass fold, Rhonda Vincent has earned accolades in country and bluegrass circles alike with two breakout releases, 2000's Back Home Again and 2001's The Storm Still Rages. One Step Ahead is a formidable addition to the series. Vincent (joined by an all-star cast of pickers) not only serves up consistently superb vocals and sprightly mandolin picking, but also displays a masterful songwriting touch. Whether on kinetic bluegrass romps like "Kentucky Borderline" and "Ridin' the Red Line," a soulful country love ballad like "You Can't Take It With You When You Go," or an a cappella gospel rave-up ("Fishers of Men"), Vincent hits the artistic and emotional bull's-eye again and again. --Bob Allen

Gooder than snuff!.......2007-01-19
As always, I really love the CD, and thoroughly enjoy her songs. One more for my collection of Rhonda's stuff!
Solid soulful bluegrass CD.......2007-01-01
I am listening to this cd as I type my review. It would not be a Rhonda Vincent album without a slight gospel feel. "Missouri Moon" is a beautifully sung and played song. It shows Rhonda does not need to hide behind vocals of others. "One Step Ahead of the Blues" harmony vocals with Alison Krauss was a very cool and excellent surprise. Anyone that can sing with Alison is a winner in my book. "Caught in the Cross Fire" slow tempo mandolin introduction is very creative. "Fishers of Men" I can play over and over again. What a vocal performance!! I have heard this done live by Rhonda and her band. They perform this as good live as recorded. I keep trying to find a bad track on this album, but I can't. Each one I listen to is great.
Short changed.......2005-03-15
Excellent album, great songs, beautiful bluegrass voice and some really fine backing muscicians, so why am I left unsatisfied? The total total track length is only 34 minutes! Thats not good value for my purchase, most albums run for 40-50 minutes. Nice album - shame about the length.
More than One Step Ahead..of everyone.......2004-07-30
Rhonda Vincent is charging hard to be in the front of the pack in women's bluegrass music. Her voice is right on tune with every song she sings. "Fishers of Men" is masterfully done and I have probably worn this cd out in only 2 weeks. I highly recommend getting all of Rhonda's music!
One Step Ahead.......2004-01-31
This is far and above one of the best CD's out there right now!! The instrumentation on this CD is unbelievable and Ms. Vincent has the quentessential blue grass voice. I can't get enough of this CD!!

A cool, restrained, acid-jazzy, and ultra-hip label debut for Texan beat poet Mark Griffin, who previously made two albums for Nettwerk. With its chorus and insistent beat, the loser's lament "If I Only Had A Brain" could follow Beck up the charts. "Buried At Sea" is more typical of his stylistic approach--recited narrative, sax squonks, and a nouveau beatnik ambience that suggests Laurie Anderson on a hip-hop tip. Don't miss "Bill's Dream," a superb instrumental reminiscent of prime Weather Report. --Jeff Bateman

An oddity when it came out in 1994, MC 900 Ft Jesus' One Step Ahead of the Spider makes a lot more sense in retrospect. It's not a hip-hop album, as it was often categorized, but a jazzy, luxurious spoken word album with Middle Eastern musical influences. Mark Griffen (a.k.a. Jesus) opens the disc with a gloriously evocative tale of distraction and destruction ("New Moon"); later, he takes tours through slackerdom (the hit "If I Only Had a Brain"), insanity ("Tiptoe Through the Inferno"), and pop culture ("New Year's Eve"). The most sublime moment on the album comes courtesy of Vernon Reid's restrained, soulful guitar on the cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Stare and Stare." --Randy Silver

Def,Dumb & White.......2003-04-14
Back in '94 this white raper was much like Eminem when his 1st single "My Name Is" came out but with 900 Ft. Jesus it was the single was "If I Only Had a Brain" it was a minor hit but made a big buzz for the young mc he apeared on Yo Mtv Raps 900 Ft. Jesus was going to blow up but then he got droped from his label. The album which back in the day was titled "Spiderz" was bootleged & i got my hands on it and i was not satisfied one cuz the album was sounded like a spoken word poet over smooth hip-hop/gangsta rap beats and it did not fit but never the less it was an allright album 3 & half stars. It was realsed in '98 on major label but did not sell because the buzz died down. pick it up if your a fan of corney, hardcore gangsta white rap or of spoken word! Peace out yall
I have seen the future.......2003-04-08
The song Bill's Dream on this album introduced me to Miles Davis (its a cover of "in a silent way")--and when I discovered the genius of Miles through MC 900, I thought "typical"--why? because Miles was one of the premier explorers of jazz (along with St. John Coltrane)--he invented an entirely new vocabulary in jazz--MC 900 Ft. Jesus, or Mark Griffin, needs to be recognized for what he has brought to the musical vocabulary of music--he combines such homages to the past as "Stare and Stare" and "Bill's Dream" with daring new excursions into the frontiers of jazz's vocabulary--people call this hiphop, but I really think that Mark Griffin is more of a jazz musician influenced by hiphop and techno/industrial--just as Miles Davis was influenced by rock and roll to create fusion--the one thing I would lament on this album, even though I like the track, is that I think "If I only had a brain" might have sprung from pressure by American records on MC 9-0-0 to come out with a hit single--notice that MC 9-0-0 hasn't come out with a record since this one? thats sometimes the story of an artist and a label having differences in opinion--the artist can't do what they want, they can't get out of their contract--and so they stop making music--we then become deprived of a unique and important voice in modern music--regardless of its record company woes, this album is still a daring excursion into the borderlands of the jazz format that largely succeeds--not to mention MC 9-0-0 has some of the most clever, intelligent lyrics of modern music
a tough little nut to crack.......2002-12-11
I sought out this album after greatly enjoying the video for the catchy single, "If I Only Had a Brain." I expected it to be full of goofy white boy hip-hop. Boy was I thrown for a loop! I'm sure this is the same way people who bought Beck's Mellow Gold album just for "Loser" felt. Within the first minute of the gigantic, eerie opening track "New Moon" I realized that this was going to be an album the likes of which I had never experienced before. While a bit uneven at times, One Step Ahead of the Spider is a fascinating musical journey to say the least. From the somber "Buried at Sea" to the ultra-cool "But If You Go" to the just flat out bizarre "Rhubarb" this album is not easy to pigeonhole into any one genre, so don't even bother. Just pop it in and prepare to be astounded. I recommend listening to this for the first time either on a long walk or in seclusion with only your headphones for company.
The Greatest Storyteller.......2002-03-07
I first experienced the grand sounds of MC 900 Foot Jesus in the early 90's. While up late one night I caught the video for "Killer Inside Me" from the album Welcome To My Dream. My brain savored every moment as the story unfolded its many layers. I was instantly sold on the idea that I had to look deeper into this artist's work. It took some effort to acquire his music but after waiting a few weeks I got my first listen to the entire ensemble of Welcome To My Dream. I was not entirely sucked in at first but after a few times of listening to the entirety MC 900 Foot Jesus became by far my favorite artist.
Shortly after I spent yet another few weeks attaining the rest of his work that was around at that time. I managed to get my hands on two of more his recordings "Hell With The Lid Off" and the single for "Too Bad". Again it took a few passes through the recordings for them to fully take hold. Once they sunk in I truly knew that greatness still existed. From that point on MC 900 Foot Jesus became a part of my every day life.
When I found that another recording was available I practically ran to get it. Finding the recording had finally made its way to the music stores shelves filled me with joy. I purchased the CD, drove home, popped on the headphones, and sank into the world of MC 900 Foot Jesus. It only took one pass through its entirety to befall enamored. The artistic styling of the album is truly beyond its time.
Mark Griffin is to me the Mark Twain of the 90's. His skill at storytelling is what seals up the deal, the music just being an extra perk. Chris McGuire plays the woodwinds and horns as if he had four arms and six lungs. DJ Zero scratches his mixes up there with the best of them. Followed by the rest of the ensemble. The music of MC 900 Foot Jesus is definitely worth looking into.
Evolution of Sound.......2001-11-05
Having been strongly into the industrial scene in the late eighties, early nineties It was inevitable to wander across MC 900 FT Jesus. Originally rejecting the earlier single 'Truth is out of style' from hell with the lid off MC wasn't on my 'to buy' list. However when One step ahead of the spider was released, what I heard an the radio was rapidly drawing me in. I purchased OSAOTS and instantly fell in love. The mature jazz compositions, intellectual lyrics and kick arse beats (remind me of DJ Food's later offerings) really set a new standard for me at the time. 'Stand and Stare' has to have one of the most blissful guitar solos (Vernon Reid) I have ever heard. After I purchased both earlier albums It was interesting to see the wonderful progression of musical sounds on each album. From driving electronic/industrial beats and Public Enemy/hip hop samples to latin/jazz instrumentals it's all there. You really need to buy all three to enjoy the full scope. The only downside is that each album has maybe half great songs and half filler. Enjoy

Great bargain bin pickup.......2007-02-26
After the reviews and samples, then seeing it so cheap, I gave Vince a whirl. Not a ball of fire or unlike anything else you have ever heard but not disappointed at all either. I find myself going back for more. Deserves a shot with better production.
Good blues/rock work!.......2006-03-18
I just listened to this CD for the first time. I don't understand why the one reviewer gave it a negative review. This is excellent guitar work and musicianship. I love blues/rock work by the usuals of course, Hendrix (saw him), Stevie Ray Vaughan (saw him), Ronnie Earl (not his jazz stuff but I love his blues songs), Michael Bloomfield, and guys newer to me like Albert Cummings, Rob Tognoni, Dave Hole, Jimmy Thackery and on and on; and Converse is good too, unlike guys I don't like that aren't as good on guitar like Tinsley Ellis, Mark May, Tab Benoit, etc. Even on songs that have too much hornwork, the guitar work is still excellent. This is worthy of a purchase; I'm glad I bought this one.
One step ahead under any circumstances!!! .......2004-12-10
I just spent ten minutes or so perusing the "customer" reviews and am amazed at the complete dichotomy here! I was a Rock/Blues drummer back in the day ( a day when you could still say hello to Jimi from across MacDougal street) and it never ceases to amaze me as to the preponderance of "IGNANT" and soul-less cretinos amongst our ilk. What is not to like about this "masterwork!" Understated and yet brilliant in its purposeful low key "Burn!" I posses approximately 2000 CD's, of which, an increasing majority are of the Modern electric blues variety. Vince Converse is at the very top of my A list. Different than anyone else, a blend of everyone else BUT, with one essential difference true blue soul n' a touch of that funk! No one is doing what this man is doing. I just wish I could find another copy before the laser in my player burns it completely through!!! To the uninitiated, to the neophyte, to the audiophile I say,....buy this now..and you will never find better tender exchanged!! A superb blues/funk/rock fusion effort! SO go buy now ...and be your own personal witness to transcendence!! Enjoy!
Blues?.......2004-02-09
I bought this on a whim because it was on one of those Amazon blues lists and the artists listed agreed with my taste, but this one's a dog, no soul, no tone, weak vocals & guitar playing, too many effects for a blues player.
SUPERB BLUES/ROCK.......2003-04-23
After reading reviews ranging from 1 to 5 stars I wasn't sure what to expect. Pleasant surprise all round. Great guitar playing with heaps of originality to add to my collection. Good to great songs and a good voice. True he doesn't re-invent the wheel, but it is a pretty good wheel and I am not sure it needs re-inventing. His tone and phrasing are so original, that I think it would be possible to pick a CONVERSE track amongst dozens of other guitarists ( not something you can say about most guitarists ). Almost every solo is memorable and a masterpiece ( not many better ) For another original take on the blues by a superb virtuoso, this delivers. No regrets, a great CD and I will look out for more releases from this talented guitarist/singer/songwriter.

Album Description
The blues world took notice when junkyardmen released 'scrapheap full of blues' in 1998. The critics raved and the fans followed in growing numbers. 'keep on workin' features twelve new songs and more of the acrobatic harmonica virtuosity of Billy Gibson; more meaty guitar and vocals from Jesse Hoggard; still more fine vocals and potent songwriting from drummer John Scalici, and the smooth, solid bass playing of Kevin Sheahan. Produced by Jim Gaines, this rockin' blues recording has an energy and chemistry that keep junkyardmen one step ahead of the blues heap. "Cadillac" is a catchy, original perspective on the virtues of having the right set of wheels while "Cadillac dreamin' in my Catalina." If "junkyardman" was the signature song from their first release, then "keep on workin" is the new anthem for these four musicians intent on playing the best blues you'll hear anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Just one of those CD's that you keep listening to..........2007-02-25
The Junkyardmen's CD Keep On Workin' may not be a disc that many of the purist's love (though I can be one of them myself sometimes). But it does have it's own charm. It's kind of a everyday kind of blues lover's CD, like the one that keep's finding it's way into the player. The title track is pretty hot stuff, and the disc just keep's on putting out good tune after tune through at least the first half. This disc makes me want go out and find the other CD of theirs--because if it's as good as this--it's bound to be worth having. I'd say this is one that you want in your collection, just for the pleasure of the best tunes--these guys have some music chemistry that works here. ps-this one's a must have if especially for you razorback's-just for the tune "Razorback" itself...

Dont buy this .......2007-01-31
There is one good song on this album and its called natural high by tosca. I bought this album becuase I was hoping for the other tracks to sound as good as that one song. They sound nothing like it and werent produced as well. I dont think tosca should have even been on this album, its too good for it and honestly sounds out of place. If you were like me and are buying this album because of that one song... dont do it, buy the one song some place else. You wont regret it like I did.
