Great Addition to My Collection.......2006-10-29

Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

The new SACD remastering helps a little.......2005-03-03

If you are reading this review then you are, perhaps, already familiar with it from its reputation as a recording deserving of demonstration quality status among audiophiles. I've owned this recording in all three of its formats. The original LP was released some time in the late Seventies and then again on CD in the mid eighties. This new SACD intends to capitalize on the new format that has been accepted by many audiophiles.

In truth, the CD version is good enough overall, as it captures the sound of the master tape very well. There are a few instances on the CD, though, in which some editing mistakes introduced some loud pops which weren't on the LP, and have been corrected here. But the hoped-for increase in dynamics isn't there simply because the recording was engineered so well that it would be impossible to improve upon perfection.

If you are not familiar with the work of Gregorio Paniagua and the Atrium Musicae, then this would not be the recording that typifies their abilities in creating what are, perhaps, some of the best introductions of ancient music. For that, you might want to try their Greek or Arabo-Andalouse recordings. What it is, though, is a thoroughly entertaining and often surprisingly funny presentation of old Spanish music, complete with a large sawmill saw, and a dozen clowns jumping into a Land Rover. Buy it and enjoy.

Worthy music.......2005-10-20

It is unfortunate that Antonio Salieri (1750 - 1825) is known now almost exclusively for being the nemesis of Mozart in the Peter Schaffer play and subsequent film 'Amadeus'. Salieri was certainly much more than the thwarted, second-rate composer. Perhaps he was not in Mozart's league so far as composition power goes (although the best of Salieri certainly stands up as worthy in comparison with many of the major composers of his time), but he was a respected composer in his own time, and perhaps more than for his composition, he was respected as a teacher and court musician. Salieri counts among his pupils Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and even Mozart's second son.

His operas tended to follow a particularly popular formula, with dramatic flairs and stories easily accessible to the people. He drew inspiration from historical works, from mythological and fictional works, as well as works of popular circulation. Salieri even used some libretti from Lorenzo de Ponte, perhaps better known now as a librettist for Mozart.

This disc includes overtures of twelve operas (Salieri wrote nearly 50 operas, several of which were not premiered until the 1990s). They include pieces from his dramatic operas as well as his comic operas. The power in these is certainly evident. Perhaps the best of the lot is 'Cesare in Farmacusa (Tempesta di Mare)' and 'Axur, Re d'Ormus', an opera also involving de Ponte, and reworked from an earlier attempt to do a French opera into an Italian one.

It is a mistake (reinforced by 'Amadeus') to classify Salieri as an Italian composer - he lived most of his life in Vienna, and was criticised by the Empress at one point for being too much of a German composer. Salieri's works such as 'Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamace', the overture of which is included here, certainly shows his strength in writing toward the German.

This disc is a fun disc to listen to. There is nothing earth-shattering or new here, but these pieces are good compositions, and the performances by the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava), under the direction of Michael Dittrich, is exemplary. This is one of those often-overlooked Eastern European orchestras that has incredible performance ability; they have had international touring experience as well as a number of recordings for Naxos, who is to be praised for bringing less popular music to the general public in an affordable way.

It's nice to know that you need a movie to awaken you to classical music. If you had been introduced to Salieri in any way other than the Milos Forman film, you would realize the truth. Amadeus is a MOVIE... just like TITANIC is a movie. FICTIONALIZED ACCOUNT OF HISTORICAL FACTS...While adding in elements of fiction to enhance the DRAMA.. Salieri is a good composer. I suggest that you do your research, pal. Do you know that he and Mozart once shared a bill? Now, ANYONE can safely say that had they been enemies, they would not have dreamed of having their operas performed together.. Music is a personal thing for those who create it. But anyway, Salieri deserves to be noticed.

Salieri was in fact a pioneer of music. It was never proven that he murdered Mozart. Salieri's pupils included Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt. He helped found the Academy of Music in Vienna. The movie Amadeus is probably loosely based on an opera called Mozart i Salieri which dramatized their competition and jealousy. Salieri does not get the credit he deserves for his contribution to classical music as a composer. Salieri is a wonderful addition to anyone's classical music collection.

This CD digs into the ignored music of Antonio Salieri. I am fed up of reviews comparing this composer to Mozart. Calling Salieri a murderer of Mozart is utterly incorrect. Probably, the reviewer who made this statement does not know that 'Amadeus' is a movie based on a myth.

I don't see how anyone can try to immortalize his works after seeing the movie Amadeus. He was a conniving, evil, egotistal man. I will never buy anything with his name on it. He is the murderer of a musical genius. I love Mozart and any of his true fans will never purchase anything with the salieri stamp on it.

Wide Ranging Anniversay Concert.......2002-02-20

In the year 2000 this Amsterdam based reed quintet celebrated its 15th anniversary with this program of compositions spanning 600 years, from Ockeghem to Ter Doest and Koolmees.

They answer the question put in the first piece (Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker) of can a reed quintet replace an entire symphony admirably well. Due to the original score omitting the basses and cellos, they fill in well with the bass clarinet.

Moving playing of Duke Ellington's "Jump for joy" along with some delicately played chamber music of England's William Byrd. Many of the rest were new to me, but enjoyed very much their profound work on Ockeghem's Intmerata Dei Mater, with a most delightful sounding basset horn dominating. Ockeghem's Mort, tu as navre is excellently performed as well.

The Francesco Bendusi piece of the 16th century, "La Monina" is so nice, with its pastoral oboe beginning to the oboe/bassoon interplay leading to the clarinet entry. Just a delightful ensemble piece highlighted by much ornamentation.

Demonstration of vast reportoire of this unique reed qunitet, who play with passion, control and clarity.

This double-disc treat covers Morricone's work from 1965 to 1995 and contains mostly never-before-released material from 40 different motion pictures, many of which demonstrate his quirkier side. Many are from less-known films like To Forget Palermo and What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution? But there are also more famous tracks like the main titles to Cinema Paradiso and My Name Is Nobody as well as the haunting "Chi Mai" from Maddalena. Though best known for his much-imitated and oppressively cute spaghetti-Western themes, Morricone here demonstrates his much more intriguing romantic and melancholic sides. His title song to Farewell to Moscow is among his saddest and menacing works and, like several other selections, can be the preferred antidote to Prozac. --Joseph Lanza

Musical Profile of a King's Life? Sure. Why not?.......2006-11-21

That is essentially the 'theme' of the CD. Thus it is not all 'Spanish' music per se but a collection including some old chestnuts from other lands. All that said, it is a superb collection and even the old chestnuts have new life breathed into them given the masterful treatment dished out here. The theme of 'Mille Regretz' appears over and over and we learn, read the notes!, that is is connected personally with Carlos V. Almost a personal theme from a 16th C. soundtrack as it were. A delightful recording.

The life of an emperor in music.......2006-07-23

This is a wonderful pot-pourri of European music from the first half of the sixteenth century - reflecting the pan-European origins of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. One of the chief delights of the disc is the consort singing of the male voices of La Capella Real. Savall now uses male altos in the vocal pieces by Enzina (and others) in the upper registers, rather than female sopranos (principally that of his wife, Montserrat Figueras) as he did in his 90's recordings with Astree. The results are perfect; altos Carlos Mena and Pascal Bertain make an abiding impression here, with Capella regular Danile Carnovich holding up the bass clef. Figueras takes the cantus in the monophonic 'ballad' pieces, and is still matchless in this kind of music. The winds of La Capella are a joy to hear - listen to the Susato Battaglia, and the Anonymous La Spagna.
In short, this is an echanting survey of the secular and religious music of 16th century Europe, imaginatively presented and beautifuly performed and recorded. A must - and a fine companion to Savall's life of Isablle I of Spain, also from Alia Vox.

Can't go wrong.......2005-08-04

Hesperion XXIs recordings for ALIA VOX are generally even better than the ones they made for EMI, and this one is no exception. Great artistic care has been taken with the arrangements to make this music really accessible to a wide audience. Add to this a first rate realistic recording and you get a divinely beautiful and evocative sound.

The performances are of course faultless. The ensemble playing is extremely precise, the singing is strong and engaging and the individual instrumentalists are all able to creatively express themselves within the mix. Andrew Lawrence King on harp is captivating as always, and Jordi Savall's rich and creamy viol, well, simply the best.

A luxurious and mesmerising production.

¡Vive el musica de Carlos V!.......2003-02-07

I purchased this CD without any information whatsoever after returning from a trip to Spain. I am generally a fan of "early music" (which is basically, according to CD store categorizations, almost everything written before 1600), so I'm used to buying CDs that I know nothing about. Sometimes I'm disappointed, but "Carlos V" is one of the most serendipitous purchases I have ever made. The first track is a haunting, beautiful and forlorn song about life's travails. The string arrangement almost sounds modern and the singing is astounding. It's a song that will stay with you, and you'll want to put it on again and again. The CD also has some festive party music on it that's more upbeat, but the CD and La Capella Reial de Catalunya shine brightest on the slow vocal songs. It's a difficult CD to describe, but if you're at all a fan of classical, early or renaissance music, you're likely to love this CD. My only regret is that I didn't look to see if La Capella Reial de Catalunya was playing anywhere when I was in Spain (Catalonia, to be precise). Maybe next time.

Lastly, there is a follow-up to this CD: "Alfons V El Magnamin" - it's a double CD and pricey, but well worth it.

Masterpiece of Renaissance.......2002-12-19

This is an excelent demonstration of how beautiful and modern is the music of Renaissance. I think it will be a nice surprise for undevoted. I advise this CD for everyone, it's really superb!!!

Apollo's Lyre come to life.......2005-05-03

Five hundred years ago, a humble lute student by the name of Vidal recorded his master's compositions in a hand-drawn tabulature book. Well aware of the ill-fate befalling musical masterpieces with the passage of time and generations, he decided to embellish the book's pages with fantastic hand-painted scenes - "so that even the unlearned man, seduced by its visual beauty, may preserve it and pass it on intact."

It is thanks to Vidal's foresight that today this precious manuscript survives, along with the sublime music it contains. And this CD is one of the absolute best performances of it I have heard.

Paul O'Dette chose three composers to represent early Northern Italian lute output: along with Vidal's master (Vincenzo Capirola, dated around 1517), there is the music from the two earliest surviving printed lute tabulature books - Francesco Spinacino and Joanambrosio Dalza (1508).

This early lute music is extremely diverse and fascinating, and O'Dette does it full justice in both piece-selection and interpretation. Dalza is best known for his bold dances, which show a strong influence of when the lute was played with a plectrum rather than picked with the fingers. Spinacino stands out for his fiery ricercari, with alternating fast single-note runs and brief counterpointal meditations. But it is Capirola and his vast tapestry of colors that gets the lion's share in this CD (dances, ricercari, vocal pieces set for lute).

Words cannot describe how expressive and varied this music is. Listen to tracks 4 (Ricercare primo), 7 (Padoana bellissima) and 8 (Spagna seconda) to get a sense of the confidence and the maturity that this style had achieved by the early 16th Century.
The lute was rigtfully considered the most versatile musical medium, second only to the human voice - and O'Dette's performance of this incredible music makes you understand why.

Even among O'Dette's excellent CD lineup, this selection stands out as an extraordinary achievement. I could not recommend it more enthusiastically.

Beware! two old CDs reissued with a new name.......2006-08-02

I bought this CD with great anticipation because I love Spanish music of this era. To my disappointment, this was not a new recording, but a reissue of two CDs I already own: "1492: Music from the Age of Discovery" and "Traveler." If you don't have these CDs already, this double set is a great bargain. But check your CD rack before buying!

A reworking of a prior disc - but now with 2 CDs.......2006-01-27

I was pleased to see that one of my favorite CDs had not really gone out of print, but was reworked into this title and now with a bonus CD. Even though I own the original "Music from the Age of Discovery 1492", I'll probably buy this disc just for the extras. Very nice mood music, lots of variety, exotic instruments and lovely voices.

perfect by candlelight or in the office.......2000-10-20

i've owned this CD for several years, and never tire of it. weather i'm curled up with a book, or just in the office with headphones on, it's appropriate for any occasion (outside a raucus party). i highly suggest it if you're interested in exotic, mystical, and festive tunes.

A good addition to an early music library........2006-12-10

Here we have an interesting sampling of early European music from the Middle-Ages to the Renaissance. The selections vary from dance music, carnival music, and music for more formal events. Its an even distribution of both instrumental and vocal pieces. As is most often the case, much of the music is of anonymous origin. The geographic origin is mainly France, Spain, and Burgundy.

A Must for Early Music Lovers!.......2005-06-12

I bought this CD about a year ago, and truly enjoy going "back in time" as I listen to it. As a collector of medieval manuscripts and books, I listen to this CD while studying and admiring my collection. Each track truly adds that special touch of actually being there at the time these manuscripts were created. The vocals are authentically done, and the compilation of music from each country and century are beautifully arranged on this CD. Listen, and travel through three centuries with this CD, and you will surely be taken back to the court dances held inside, and outside, the ancient castles of those times.

I've always liked this recording for the variety of pieces it contains: Italian, Spanish, German, Burgundian. The main drawback is that they only have one singer - some pieces with vocal harmony would have been nice.

The renaissance pieces are satisfying enough, but the medieval selections are treated so poorly as to be insulting. In the light of newer recordings, this album falls flat track after track. The musicianship is coarse, the singing inane, the arrangements crude. Such performances only perpetuate the image of the middle ages as a cultural wasteland, which demonstrates ignorance and lack of perspective.

I really enjoy listing to my copy of this album especially while surfing the net or playing Age of Kings. I turn off the game music and listen to this instead - Hey the game IS set in the Middle Ages ;-) Also good for playing while reading fantasy stories set in pseduo-european middle age worlds! I wish I knew alot about music so I could post a learned and studied review. All I can say is I really enjoy this cd and am very glad I bought it. I have since ordered more music by the Early Music Consort of London as I the more I listen to this cd and similar music the more I want to hear it!
