    Product Description

Its hard to overestimate the impact of McKinley Morganfield on the Chicago post-war blues scene, and by extension on rocknroll itself. Having come from the heart of the Mississippi Delta (Rolling Fork), he spent the first 28 years of his life close to his birthplace, leaving for the Windy City in 1943. With this set of recordings, which covers the years 1952-1958, we continue the survey of the complete recorded works of Muddy Waters in chronological order. The first fifty tracks of his Aristocrat/Chess career appear on Muddy Waters, Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection (MCA/Chess 2301-2); the present set continues to follow his musical development, and showcases the second fifty sides, picking up where the previous collection ended and spanning an important seven year period in his career. Packaged in a bound booklet, replete with rare photographs and extensive liner notes, this set captures Muddy Waters at the height of his commercial success, and includes literally dozens of songs that influenced rock and blues performers right up to the present day.

5 out of 5 stars Classic dance band recordings from the early '30s.......2003-06-24

I have had both this CD and its companion Vol.1 for a couple of years now. Both are superbly produced and transferred (despite what another reviewer states -- does he require all high frequencies to be dampened? Then the music sounds dead and muffled). Both are essential listening to those of us who love quality dance band music of that era. Selvin used great soloists, who gave many of his sides a quintessential jazzy sensibility (the young Benny Goodman features prominently herein). Get this one!

    2 out of 5 stars Ben Selvin,Vol.2.......2002-07-27

Ben Selvin had his first orchestra around 1917.He recorded over 3000 records for various companies. The bands featured on this CD Included many musicians who went on to fame;Benny Goodman,Tommy Dorsey,Artie Shaw,to name a few. The CD is a good review of the music heard in the '20's & '30's.but failed miserably in an attempt to"clean" up whatever records they were dubbed from.

5 out of 5 stars This second CD by Bennie Selvin is truly marvelous!!!!!.......1999-10-28

....and you all thought Selvin's Volume I really was good...too...well.....this tops them all!!!!! Some of the biggest names recorded with Selvin: GOODMAN, MILLER, both JACK & CHARLIE TEAGARDEN, and even cowboy crooner SMITH BALLEW. Ballew has a singing voice like mine, and I have many, many of his records; including one recorded around 1932-1933 "Tia Juna," and "The Isle of Capri." Selvin really had good potential and talent to show-off to the world what good quality musicians were really made of. (Bill Randle, if you're reading this -- don't forget, Selvin, in his whole career recorded under 150 different band-leading names, and way-over 9,000-10,000 recorded titles and I really don't care what jazz discographer Brian Rust thinks of my opinion.)

3 out of 5 stars RAZZ MA TAZZ!!!.......1998-10-12

This is the second volume of Ben Selvin, he was a big star in the 20's and these cuts are all original and classic...."I'm In The Market For You", "When I'm Housekeeping For You", "Smile Darn Ya Smile"..are all great!!! This is your connection to the real stuff of the twenties...It's great that these cuts have been saved on CD.

In the late 1920s, Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians were one of the most popular bands in the U.S. They toured constantly, played in Broadway shows, starred in Syncopation, the first all-talking, all-singing movie, and made numerous records. The tracks on The Broadway Years were recorded between 1929 and 1932, and include delights such as the original cast recording of the Cole Porter song "Love for Sale" from the 1930 production of The New Yorkers; "Alma Mammy," an Al Jolson take-off that parodies both Jolson's minstrel style and the college songs that were popular at the time; and "I Say It's Spinach," a song that was based on a cartoon from the New Yorker magazine. The Pennsylvanians were an excellent band capable of playing anything, from the sweet sounds of "Dancing in the Dark" to the cartoonish "The Old Man of the Mountain." Although the arrangements are more pop than jazz, they are always inventive and show a great deal of sophistication. The Broadway Years shows Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians at their best, and illuminates the period in American popular music when the frenetic 1920s styles were giving way to the smoother, swing inspired music of the 1930s. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars No mush on this CD, either!.......2002-02-26

One of the points I made straight off in my review of the companion CD to this one, "The Collegiate Years (Vol. 1)" is that the Fred Waring with whom many of us grew up gave us the impression that his style was lush and bland, whereas the reality of the situation is that his early style was rollicking and, most of all, fun! Oh, there are the Waring trademarks: superb musicianship and precise ensemble. This may sound like a sterile environment in which to have "fun", but don't believe that for a minute!
The other review in this space details a lot of the features on this CD, so I won't repeat them. What hasn't been said is that, as with the companion CD, the sound processing is superb. Sources are apparently released shellac disks, but the only noise you hear is a constant shellac hiss -- no clicks and pops. Equalization is about as natural as one could hope for.
The final item on this CD marks the beginning of a 9-year recording hiatus for the Pennsylvanians, due to Waring's then-ongoing battle for royalties owed him by broadcasters who would play his records without attribution. It's a real pity, because he continued to make music like this during these years. Since a lot of it was broadcast on radio, we can only hope that someone may, in the future, publish some of the transcriptions which, no doubt, exist.
An artifact of the aforementioned era has found its way occasionally into the MP3 world: Raymond Scott's parody of Waring entitled, in Scott's typical cumbersome style, "The Reaction of the Musicians to Meeting Waring's Pennsylvanians." I'm not at all familiar with the song they are singing (it was never recorded on 78s), but the humor is brilliant: Waring's trademark precise unison vocal ensemble is a total shambles in this version -- that is, every voice enters about a millisecond off from every other voice! The singing is exceptionally overwrought, and "hey nonny nonny" and "ha cha cha" are thrown into the lyrics. There are musical quotations from "Collegiate" at the beginning and end of the piece, too, just to give it that authentic feel. I hope that the next Scott compilation (soon to be released, they say) will include this piece. On first hearing it, I thought that Scott was ridiculing Waring; however, it now seems to me to be a tribute to Waring and his contribution to the world of pop music -- and a fitting one, at that!

This 1992 CD is one of the best installments in Rhino's generally excellent "Blues Masters" series.

It brings together 18 recordings by some of the best and most renowned artists on the Chicago blues scene, and the postwar Chicago blues scene is of course "where it's at" as far as classic electric blues goes.

Not every selection is perfect...they could have done better by Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Junior Wells in particular, and where the heck are Elmore James and John Lee Hooker?
But what is here is mostly great, from Buddy Guy's slow, anguished "First Time I Met The Blues" to J.B. Lenoir's upbeat "Mama Talk To Your Daughter", and the compilers at Rhino have included some of the very best songs by men like Eddie Boyd (the slow blues "Five Long Years"), Howlin' Wolf (the menacing "Smokestack Lightnin'"), Jimmy Reed (the swinging, lethargic boogie of "Bright Lights, Big City"), Sonny Boy Williamson II (the magnificent, harp-driven "Don't Start Me to Talkin'"), Otis Rush (the fiery "All Your Love"), and several others.
Magic Sam is here as well, (his "All You Love" is not the same song as Otis Rush's), and so are Jimmy Rogers, Bo Diddley, and Johnny Shines, all well represented by really great songs.

"Blues Masters vol. 2" ranks alongside MCA/Chess' "Chess Blues Classics: 1947 To 1956", "Chess Blues Classics: 1957 To 1967", and "Chess Blues Guitar" as one of the best "various artists"-compilations available. Seasoned blues listeners will have most or even all of this music already, of course, but this is a really good place to start, and the liner notes are excellent as always.

    Album Description

Chinese classical music is a much larger field than Western classical music. It covers a huge geographical area as well as a time frame of thousands of years. Although some of China's musical instruments have changed very little in hundreds or thousands of years, others were adapted to Western standards under the influence of Russian musicians during the middle of this century. In some cases, frets were added to non-chromatic instruments and tonalities standardized. The liner notes of The Hugo Masters: An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music contain extensive documentation of the various instruments used in Chinese solo and orchestral music, with descriptions of their history and modifications, as well as an essay to help Western listeners understand the background of Chinese classical music.

The instruments fall into four categories, each constituting a separate compact disk:
    Volume One: Bowed Strings
    Volume Two: Plucked Strings
    Volume Three: Woodwinds
    Volume Four: Percussion
These disks are available individually or as a collector's series in a beautifully designed silk boxed set.

The music itself is highly varied and richly emotional. The music paints pictures of China's people, their culture and homeland, and their dreams and their despair. The Hugo Masters: An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music is a joint effort of the Hugo and Celestial Harmonies labels to bring this definitive anthology to listeners worldwide. This is the first time these recordings have become available to audiences outside of Hong Kong. For listeners unfamiliar with Chinese classical music, these works are a powerful and emotional awakening.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tones and Vibrant Timbre.......2002-08-26

The music is very touching and moves the soul as the listener ponders, reminisces over the compositions and their titles which some are very graphical and radical to some extent. For instants track one titled "Ambush" played by a pi-pa (Chinese pear shape lute with four strings much similar to the Japanese Biwa). The music is very descriptive in it's tones and timbres and the way that it is strummed like a guitar however with more vibrancy and their I can to some extent visual the whole scene of the ambush taking place with arrows flying and near the end I could hear what sound like the cries of horses and men as they fall or are charging at their enemies from the rapid puckling techinque which makes the pi-pa best played as a solo. I have another version of track 2 "Like Waves Against Sand". The version I have the music is played at a slower pace. Thus the musician has their own style of playing and certain areas their interpretation was very unique expressing what their thoughts and ideaology.

The Sword dance played by the liu ch'in which looks like a smaller version of the pi-pa but with a higher pitch. The music seemed to have this European and Islamic sense in it. Some parts sound nothing like Chinese and I guess the music during the Tang Dynasty was often incorporated new concepts and ideas which makes it sound so unusal. Track 4 played by the zhong-ruan which looks like a guitar with a round sound box playing the "Moonlit Night Of Stone Forest" is my favourite because it starts off slow with the strumming and plucking sound which sounds like a guitar but it becomes more rapid sound more like a Spanish Flemenco guitar as well as the style used by the chapey a traditional Cambodian long neck lute. It's my favourite music because, it's very rapid and I like the strumming effect as the musician is trying to convey his/her idea. This is the first time I have head the ruan being played solo because most of the Chinese music I have contains ruan playing in an orchestra but only playing the chords or playing the bass like a bass in a guitar. Petrel for track 5 is somewhat unusual and I don't like it because it sounds too Western sounding more like a piano rather than a hammered dulcimer called yang ch'in meaning foreign lute. My other favourite track is "Beyond the Great Wall" the music is very mellow and at times has that twanging effect which sounds almost like Japanese or Vietnamese music. The sound of the flute floating over the twanging tones and timbres of the san-hisen a three stringed lute with no fret reminds me the sounds of an American banjo. The music is rapid and tended to slow down and then become rapid again. It's haunting and kind of said as the the sleeve notes suggests. To go beyong the Great Wall from my point of view it might mean to go beyond China's frontier into a foreign and unfamiliar land or it cound mean to go beyond the large palace walls? Since once people were recruited into the palace grounds they would never leave the palatial grounds since they lived and died within the palatial grounds. That's my interpretation. The mood is very sad because, it conveys to me the throughts and feelings of sadness and the pondering of what happens when she does leave what is so familiar to her. That's my interpretation.

Other intruments include the zheng a 16 stringed zither much similar to the Japanese koto. The two pieces are played different the more slow and relaxing one called the "Defeating Song of the Chu" is a very mellow, bitter sweet music as the musician plucks. Zheng is a popular instrument "High Mountains and Flowing Water" such rapid but sweet tones can be make the situtations very dreamy. This is a very gu-zheng piece of music. I hear it in nearly every gu-zheng recording. I have often enjoyed the soothing tones of the zheng and the way that it's being played and pluck and the plucking style could vary as well as often as I have heard. The Southern style of music from Canton (Guandong) and also Chao Zhao AKA Teo Chew music their style is very strong to delicate plucking since there are so many schools with different playing techniques.

The last two compositions performed by the ch'in a seven stringed long black zither has their unusual sound like someone strumming a guitar and plucking the wrong keys or strings. This music is always enjoyable to my ears because they are relaxing and often the music tended to have descriptive tones which seems to be very primordial. Quite relaxing and sooths the soul and was often considered one of many treasures that a scholar in China should possess. The Parting at Yangguan is another famous piece that was written for the ch'in. It was based on a Chinese poem in the Tang Dynasty and it song was called Song of Wei City which was later on adapated into this fine composition. Its sad but melodic and gives that sense of a friend leaving and its a very mournful farewell.

The broken string techinque demonstrated on the zheng is very good and has an effect that a string is being broken in fact it's not.

Overall the music is wonderful and recordings are great. Wonderful selections of the music and I seemed to really enjoy it. Apart from this music there are a few other cd recorded on Chinese music including bowed, wind and percussion. The liner notes are very helpful in the description but they should have pictures to show what each instrument looks like.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars These jazz cd's rock...er...swing...are cool!.......2007-05-10

I bought all five of these at once so I could get "jazz literate" without spending a lot of money. They are a very cost effective introduction to jazz, and you get a lot of classics so eventually you can impress people by telling them about your favorite jazz tunes and artists. Just make sure to change the subject before you have to go into any detail.

Great recording quality considering the source material (old hissy tapes sometimes) and an almost-free price make this an unbeatable bargain with a jazzy beat!

4 out of 5 stars Dabble in Jazz.......1999-09-21

This set was bought for me. I used to eat lunch at small sub shop on Belmont Ave. in Chicago. It was named the Jazzy Cafe. You went not just to eat and listen to whatever Jazz the owner was playing that day but to listen to whatever the owner wanted to tell you. He knew enough about Jazz to be dangerous. His subs would have a different taste depending on the music he was playing that day. He recommended this set to me one day and I never got around to getting it, so he bought for me.

To this day I am very greatful for this set and for the many subs I ate there.'

Put this set in and hit random and you'll get a real taste of the Jazzy Cafe as I remember it.

Say you're trying to be kool. Your perhaps thinking of inviting some people over to your house. You maybe have designs about impressing them with your worldly tastes. You may even know a lady you want to slice, but you're unsure as to how to get her off her guard. Get this set and all your dreams will come true. The song selection is A+, but some of the old tapes have some hiss that carried over onto the digital format. It is noticable, but primo if you have a mono state on your amp- you do have an amp...WHAT! You ain't got an amp and you wanna impress somebody with your stereo? Nevermind your in the wrong genre`- you must've got to this by mistake. Over the Rainbow, written by H.Carmichael and performed here by "Fatha" Hines on the ivory and Stephen Grapelli on the violin is worth the price of this set. Not to mention Theopolis Monk. Peace
