A compilation assembled by German label Blue Flame, Women's World Voices brings together material of female vocalists from all over the globe, including Cameroon, Turkey, Cuba, Japan, and Norway. An eclectic array of styles ranging from electronic groove to contemporary folk and layered tribal-inflected pop, Voices is literally all over the map. While some of the selections reverberate with a distasteful nervosity or a schmaltzy womanism, others in the collection stand apart for notice. The disc starts with Brazilian artists Mo'horizons Feat and Leila Pantel bringing on the disco party vibe with "Foto Viva." Sudanese artist Rasha comes across as a cooler, jazzier, and more exotic Sade on "Azara Hay," and Belgium's Elisa Waut does a wonderfully bored Nico-esque turn at "Sad King." As a whole, the compilation serves well as an introduction to international female artists who might otherwise go unheard by American audiences. --Paige La Grone

classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Four Fair Maidens Awaken The Celtic Muse.......2006-02-01
It's simply the best compilation of Celtic music I've yet to come across. Definitely one of the essentials.
really beautiful.......2005-08-15
an amazingly beautiful album.......2005-03-15
First there is Mary McLaughlin who sings "Bring The Peace", "You Saw His Eyes", and "Sealwoman/Yundah". Born in North Ireland, Mary moved to London at the age of 18 where her music career began to flourish. The album begins with "Sealwoman/Yundah", a spellbinding, almost erotically charged song inspired by the Celtic legand of the selkies (sea-like creatures able to take human form). In it the "Sealwoman" (selkie) is torn between her home (the sea) and human love. Next up is "Bring The Peace" a lovely song about gaining wisdom after a period of seperation, and for coming "full circle." Rounding off the three songs Mary contributes is "You Saw His Eyes" whose message resonates any pop song that's out there today: to love someone only to be brokenhearted.
next up is Connie Dover, born in Arkansas and raised in Missouri. She sings "The Wishing Well", "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir", "Siuil a Ruin" and "Cantus". Praising the birth and final sacrifice of Christ as well as the devotion of Mary, his Mother, "Cantus" is exceptionally emotional. "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir" (at haycutting time) is a stark contrast to "Cantus". More lively and upbeat, this traditonal song finishes with a dance tune written by Phil Cunningham who has had a long and fruitful working relationship with Connie. The mood changes drasticlly once again for "The Wishing Well", inspired by a poem written by Padraig Prease. This poignant song is about the sometimes overpowerful feelings of love and the fear of "losing yourself" in the process. "Siuil a Ruin" (go, love) is the heartbreaking tale of a woman's love for a solider who has fled to France in times of war.
After Connie's beautiful voice, there is the equally stunning voice of Maireid Sullivan, who was born in Ireland and at age 11 moved with her family to San Francisco, and later moved to Melbourne, Australia. She sings "Colour Me", and the more traditional "She Moved Through The Fair" and "Waly Waly". "Colour Me", co-written by Maireid and guitarist Steve Wilson, paints a lovely picture of a river on a sunny day. "She Moved Through The Fair" has been a favorite among celtic artists (Lorenna Mckennitt also sings a rendition of it, among others)and "Waly Waly", another traditional favorite is sometimes refered to "The Water Is Wide"
Closing out the album is harpist and Isle Of Man native Emma Christian who contributes the songs "Ushag Veg Ruy" (Little Red Bird), "Oikan Ayns Bethlehem" (Birth In Bethlehem),"O Kirree, Tou Goll Dy Faagail Mee" (O Kirree Thou Wilt Leave Me), and (very fittingly) "Arrane Oie Vie" (The Goodnight Song). Sung in her native language, Manx Gaelic, Emma creates a serene, intimate atmosphere for her audience. Keeping close to her roots, all four songs are rich with the Manx tradition.
The Title for this cd (Celtic Voices:Women Of Song) is so perfect because I feel the human voice is one of the most complex and beautiful instruments. This cd clearly demostrates that in the stunning, impressive talents of these four women. This is a wonderful album for immense lovers of Celtic music (such as myself) and also for those who are new to Celtic music. I highly recommend it.

Fauré: Requiem (1893 Version) [Hybrid SACD]

Customer Reviews:
As it's intended to be.......2006-10-27
Thus the 1893 version is the most complete and sincere overall. It has all the movements Faure composed, and is orchestrated only in the way Faure intended to. My opinion is that a piece loses its sincerity when it is orchestrated for a different medium. Take Rossini's 'Petite Messe Solennelle' for instance: Even though it's skillfully orchestrated for full orchestra by the composer, the version for the small ensemble stands always closer to me.
About this recording, I simply find it magical. The choir performs wonderfully, every group sounds very clear and moving. Listen to the part where the choir sings the theme of the baritone in the end of 'Libera me'. Without any exaggeration they bring a moving freshness to the piece. In every part of Requiem the choir is just great, they never destroy the sacred feeling of this piece. Listen to the tenors in the beginning of 'Agnus Dei' for instance. And the soprano solo in 'Pie Jesu'? Such a gentle interpretation, such peaceful and magical singing. To be compared with the recording of C.M. Giulini, in Giulini's recording K. Battle completely ruins the atmosphere thus the whole meaning of 'Pie Jesu' by using too much vibrato, thus the peacefulness, the purity of 'Pie Jesus' is completely destroyed.
The other soloist Peter Kooy (baritone) performs so wonderfully in 'Libera me' that you get a weird tension, take the harmonic progression starting with 'Quando coeli movendi sunt' for instance. There is no roughness in his singing; every phrase flows naturally.
The orchestra is wonderful too. Horns sound very nice. Even the solo violin in 'In Paradisum' is nice in spite of a few intonations. Mr. Herreweghe accomplished a great success in this performance. Everything is well thought of. Requiem is a great peace with contrasting ideas, great orchestration. Listen for instance to the part beginning with 'Te decet hymnus' in 'Introit et Kyrie', after tenors sing "... et lux perpetua' and with the entrance of horns & trumpets there is a small tension. Right after this the female voices enter; these contrasting ideas are great. Herreweghe senses this and never lets any phrase to be exaggerated; this in fact is how this piece is intended to be, and this recording comes very close.
This recording is highly recommended.

The second volume of Voices of Celtic Women features some of the finest singers in Ireland and Scotland. The music ranges from the ultratraditional a cappella of Ray Fisher to the techno beat of Talitha MacKenzie. This collection overcomes the potentially jarring musical transitions such a wide stylistic gap can create by skillfully choosing songs that have slower tempos and similar themes. Sorrow and longing are the threads that tie traditional performances like Dolores Keane's "The Low Low Lands of Holland" and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill's "Martha, the Flower of Sweet Strabane" to more modern songs like Susan McKeown's "Banks of Claudy" and Antoinette McKenna's "O Ro Song of the Sea." There are many laments and tragic ballads here, but the dignity and emotional power of the singers keep the songs from becoming mere tearjerkers. This is music to listen to in solitude, perhaps when you are trying to mend a broken heart. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The Highly acclaimed 1995 Smithsonian Folkways release, Heartbeat: Voices of First Nations Women, introduced the public to a rare and dynamic but little-known Native American music. This new recording offers more material traditionally sung by tribal women and music that is ordinarily sung or played by man, but recently performed by women as well. Heartbeat 2 includes social and ceremonial dance songs, war, honor, and story songs from Native North America, as well as music in contemporary styles, including flute songs, poetry set jazz, and pop-oriented folk song. Produced in collaboration with the National Musuem of American History.Customer Reviews:
