This double-disc treat covers Morricone's work from 1965 to 1995 and contains mostly never-before-released material from 40 different motion pictures, many of which demonstrate his quirkier side. Many are from less-known films like To Forget Palermo and What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution? But there are also more famous tracks like the main titles to Cinema Paradiso and My Name Is Nobody as well as the haunting "Chi Mai" from Maddalena. Though best known for his much-imitated and oppressively cute spaghetti-Western themes, Morricone here demonstrates his much more intriguing romantic and melancholic sides. His title song to Farewell to Moscow is among his saddest and menacing works and, like several other selections, can be the preferred antidote to Prozac. --Joseph Lanza

4 out of 5 stars Greatest hits and rarities.......2006-07-27

The historic recordings that Phil Spector produced in the sixties have been sadly neglected by the CD format. Only one or two albums such as River Deep Mountain High and A Christmas Gift For You are available in full, and even compilations are thin on the ground. Darlene Love, the Ronettes and the Crystals had "Best Ofs" released through Phil Spector Inc./ABKCO in the early 1990s, but putting aside any considerations about the mastering quality, they were far from comprehensive, and many other Philles artists are not represented on CD at all.

In a perfect world the three albums the Crystals made for Phil Spector and the four extra A-sides would all be available on CD. They would all fit onto one disc as the second album, He's A Rebel, was a disguised re-issue of Uptown Twist, the first, but with three new tracks replacing two from the first; while the third, The Crystals Sing Their Greatest Hits (Vol. 1), recycled yet again some of their older hits, as you would expect, but added five previously unreleased covers of recent dance hits, including an excellent version of the Chantels' Look In My Eyes.

The Best Of The Crystals, compiled by Phil Spector in 1992, is still the best generally available Crystals anthology, but this 29-track compilation on the hard to find Belgian Marginal label from five years later has every track that was on The Best Of The Crystals and a further ten tracks. The monaural sound is generally crisper and clearer than on the Best Of, though there are still some shortcomings, and some of the tracks have been slightly shortened, notably I Wonder, which loses nearly ten seconds.

Lead vocal duties are shared between Barbara Alston, La La Brooks, Pat Wright (on Oh Yeah Maybe Baby) and guest singers Darlene Love and the incomparable Ronnie Spector (on Mashed Potato Time).

The ten additional tracks include their three contrbutions to A Christmas Gift For You. Frankenstein Twist and On Broadway appeared on both Uptown Twist and He's A Rebel. On Broadway is especially interesting as it was the first recorded version of the song and had some lyric revisions before it was recorded by the Cookies and, most famously, the Drifters. The infamous (Let's Dance) The Screw has never been on CD before. It appeared only on DJ copies of the single before being withdrawn, and shortly afterwards Da Doo Ron Ron was released. The single consisted of Parts 1 and 2 and the version here clocks in at 4.32.

The other three tracks appear to date from after their tenure at Philles and were not produced by Phil Spector. Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby? was their second single for United Artists in 1966, and was an early Nickolas Ashford/Valerie Simpson song that had been recorded the year before by Candy and the Kisses. In The Morning and a cover of the Shirelles' When The Right Boy Comes Along sound more recent and have previously appeared on the EMI America label but I have no more information about them. All three clearly feature the wonderful vocals of La La Brooks.

Unfortunately this leaves just one track from Twist Uptown unavailable, their version of Carla Thomas's Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes), though the second album, He's A Rebel, can be re-created by programming tracks 1, 3, 19, 17, 2, 5, 10, 22, 13, 14, 12 and 15.

The Crystals Sing Their Greatest Hits (Vol. 1) is missing Hot Pastrami, The Wah Watusi, The Twist and Gee Whiz. It is a pity room could not have been found for these four tracks, perhaps instead of the Christmas Gift tracks (as that album is readily available in its own right) or the non-Spector recordings, thus making all releases from their contemporary Philles catalogue available on CD.

Also, a few unreleased Crystals recordings surfaced on vinyl in the seventies. Of these only Heartbreaker, which was also on The Best Of The Crystals, is included. It would have been nice to also have the alternative version of All Grown Up, and the version of Girls Can Tell with Ronnie Spector (Veronica) singing lead.

However, Marginal Records have shown that is possible to license Spector productions from ABKCO, giving hope that other overdue re-releases may one day appear.

5 out of 5 stars Won! Outstanding Rap CD - 2004 California Music Awards.......2005-04-09

Yes, they won a California Music Award for their CD "Bohemian Rap CD" (get it?) But "Twist The Knob" is where it all started...
I originally pulled this CD out of the 99-cent bin in a San Francisco record store, and have since been a HUGE fan. Rap, pop, funk, punk-ish, it's all there. If you like independant hip-hop/rap over multi-level beats then this is for you.

Fans of Frank Zappa, Digital Underground and home-spun from-the-street raps will GREATLY appreciate this album. Songs about stealing guys' girlfriends, politics, San Francisco and a freaky mistress will spice up your stale collection of rap/hip-hop.

I especially enjoy "Open Letter To The Close Minded" and of course "Girlfriend Is The Best". "Marginal Prophets Hotline" has me laughing everytime.

But don't think that's all!! They absolutely ROCK live! They put on one of the best and most energetic shows I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Chubby Checker item to own.........2007-04-27

If you sift through virtually every other Chubby Checker compilation CD out there, you get variations of the same theme ad nauseum. The dances, hucklebuck, twist, limbo, more dances, on and on. Here you get a fair share of those but also some plain old good songs on everyday themes. This is worth owning for the sheer inclusion of "Black Cloud," basically a blues song but performed so robustly you would have a hard time believing Mr. Checker wasn't really happy. Maybe he was happy to at last be singing about something besides a dance. "Lovely Lovely" sounds like the Tokens joined in for some divine background vocals. Also included is "Hooka-Tooka" which received massive airplay on the Classic BIG WAYS radio show in Charlotte, NC, in the late 60's, legendary dee-jay Jack Gale would have listeners call in and sing along with the tune. I can't say that I've seen Volume Two of the series and I'm not sure what's left for inclusion there.

2 out of 5 stars Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07

Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).

With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.

Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.

Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.

Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).

As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.
