5 out of 5 stars Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30

Every concerto/piece for flute and orchestra presented here can stand as the very pinnacle of performance and interpretation. Rampal and friends play with all the logic and song of the French school. I would like to commend the Mozart G Major concerto in particular, as Rampal's is the best performance I know (I've heard a better one, but that was on internet radio and I wasn't able to find out who performed it - I'm still searching). I have heard 10 other G Majors, all by worthy soloists with the likes of the VPO or LSO accompanying, and none can outdo Rampal's passionate yet low-key style with the absolutely glorious Israel Philharmonic (you might never have heard them - and you'll wonder why!) with a reasonably alert Zubin Mehta at the helm. The balance is wonderful, with the delicate middle string parts coming through clearly (shame on you, DG and Decca). If only Karl Boehm had been around to wave the stick for these Mozart recordings (The D Major and C Major here are also magnifcent, by the way), this would likely be hands-down the only set of Mozart concertos you'll ever need. Nevertheless, they are pretty darn close.

Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"

5 out of 5 stars Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17

The late Jean-Pierre Rampal, whom I had the pleasure to meet and chat with in the 1980's, is a "triple threat" man, in analogy to the football term. Some fine players impress with their technique. I am swept along by Rampal's renditions in a way that makes me forget all about technique - except for miraculous nuances every now and then that remind me that Rampal recreates every work with a creative, perceptive mind. For example, in Vivaldi's "Goldfinch" concerto Rampal, as almost afterthoughts, puts in exquisite little embellishments that literally makes a little bird come to life. It's a miraculous sound. Too bad Antonio Vivaldi couldn't have heard it.

Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.

Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.

Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.

Though it's the first time Pearl Jam has played in Slovenia, the fans are attentive and vocal, even loudly singing the closing melody of "Black" from Ten well after the band has softly faded it out. Nearly half the set is taken from the band's last two albums, Binaural and Yield, but most of the special moments from this show, such as the punky blast of Vitalogy's "Spin the Black Circle" and Merkin Ball's angry "I Got Shit" (a.k.a. "I Got Id"), go back a little further. The trio of tunes that close out the performance--"Porch," "Soon Forget," and "Indifference"--have a very intimate feel that really seems to connect with the crowd, still fired up after more than two hours. "Indifference," from Vs., is particularly moving, with the crowd singing much louder than Eddie Vedder at the end, a moment guaranteed to give you goosebumps. --Adem Tepedelen

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Porch!!!.......2005-08-05

At long last, after hearing shouted requests on previous Bootlegs for "Porch", Pearl Jam let's it loose. This is a down to earth, no frills show that I frequently find myself coming back to more frequently than the fabled Milan or Hamburg shows. The band's playing and the adoration evidenced by this neglected part of their fan base is part of the reason. It's a shame this could not have been one of the longer shows in the tour. This release is now one of the harder to find ones of the series, so expect to pay a premium for it if you find it. It's worth the price. Oh, and did I tell you it has "Porch"?

3 out of 5 stars The flubs kill it for me.......2004-11-18

I got this bootleg as soon as I realized that collecting the 2000 tour was something I wanted to do, and I expected just one thing from it: a good Corduroy opener. Instead, Ed blows it like it's Immortality, and it hurts the momentum of both the crowd and the band up through MFC. The sound quality of the venue is also questionable, as plenty of otherwise good performances are rife with feedback. It doesn't seem that the band really hits its stride until halfway through, with Habit. Admittedly, the rest of the set is terrific, possibly running long because of the flub early on. Alive ends the main set with a flourish, and the encore mixed hits with rarities , the highlights of which are Sleight of Hand (INCREDIBLE) and Indifference (Even better). Casual fans will appreciate the presence of Last Kiss, Betterman, and Daughter.

You get a lot of music on this set, and much of it is excellent, but the flaws that appear on every bootleg absolutely plague this set.

      5 out of 5 stars A Gritty, Fast-Moving Performance.......2001-10-25

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This show in the obscure location of Ljubljana, Slovenia is one of the pleasant surprises of the European bootleg series. This is a gritty, intense performance, with a highly intriguing set list full of tunes that appear very rarely elsewhere in the tour, all played with extra soul and flair. Granted, this show gets off to a rather weak start, with Eddie Vedder flubbing many of the lyrics in "Corduroy" (they play this song every single night, for cryin' out loud), and Mike McCready and Stone Gossard are really out of sync in "Breakerfall" and "Hail Hail." After this bumpy start however, the band explodes into a powerful performance of their heaviest songs, and a smaller number of ballads than usual. Some of the surprises in the set list include great renditions of "Brain of J," "Faithful," and "Spin the Black Circle." There are absolutely incredible takes on "Red Mosquito" and "I Got Shit," two of my personal favorites which are not played very often on the tour. "Porch" appears for the very first time in the tour to close the second set, and they would use this firecracker of a song many more times thereafter. One interesting thing about the European bootlegs is that they show you how people in a surprising number of nations can speak English, and Eddie can rap with the crowd without a translator and everybody loves it (or maybe they're just excited to hear him speak at all, and don't really know what he's saying). Watch for Eddie's slam at Slobodan Milosevic in this show. The key to this performance is the unexpected use of "Indifference" to close the show. This quiet and moody song takes on a spine-tingling aspect as the crowd sings along to the disturbing lyrics on loneliness and depression. This is one of the most goosebump-inducing moments in the entire series.

4 out of 5 stars This is a review of that american J. F. Curtin.......2001-08-22

"but it could have been the band were not entirely comfortable in this tiny offshoot of Yugoslavia, as Eddie's closing comment ("Be safe. Have good lives. Goodbye.") seems to indicate they have no intention of returning any time soon." is the comment made by some ignorant fool in some hick town in america. If I ever meet the person that made this comment, I'm going to cut off his "tiny offshoot" By the way, great CD by Pearl Jam, and I would really like to know if they felt "uncomfortable" in Slovenia. God only knows why they would, its one of the cleanest and safest countries in the world!

5 out of 5 stars Worth it just for.............2001-01-25

INDIFFERENCE. It was the only date on the european tour where they played it. You can feel the intimacy with the audience from this recording of that song. The other songs also make for a varied set including all the classics. Admittedly it's not as good as the #4 London CD, but it is still well worth the 5 stars I have given it.

      Album Description

You might still hear Yiddish songs today, in concert or at social gatherings of Yiddish speakers. But their natural venue was the village or shtetl of Eastern Europe or America where you could hear them through open windows in courtyards, or from busy people humming their way from place to place. They were born and flourished in a world that is no more. They represent the joys and sorrows, dreams and aspirations of ordinary folk, the Jewish mother's dreams for her child, the poverty of the rebbe, the Jewish teacher, the freshness of young love and revolution, the joy of Jewish holidays which provided a welcome respite from the drudgery and hardships of daily life for Eastern European Jewery. Yiddish song reflects the richness of Jewish folklore, as old, vast and varied as the numerous regions which the thousand-year-old language and culture inhabited. It reached its greatest artistic expression in the latter half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. There are songs of work, love and lullabies; songs about great Jewish heroes and parodies about the same, songs about Hassidic rabbis, pogroms, the Messiah, the longing for redemption and the return to Zion, and of revolution. Political parodies abounded in the 20th century as did Yiddish theater songs in various genres: operetta, art song and Vaudeville. There were writers, poets and musicians throughout the ages who created this treasure trove, much of it still waiting to be culled. The Yiddish street singer was a common sight in the cities and towns of Eastern Europe, well into the 20th century. The broder zinger from Galicia heralded in an age of Yiddish folksong creativity that reached every continent on which Jews lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. The poet Itzik Manger and, of course, Mordechai Gibertig, the most famous and popular of the Yiddish folk-poets, were heirs of that tradition. Gibertig "S'Brent," a vision of burning cities and a call to arms, written in 1938, proved to be all too prophetic. During World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews were confined in ghettos across German occupied Eastern Europe. In the ghettos and even concentration camps, members of the terrorized Jewish population engaged in remarkable, organized acts of defiance. Determined to leave a record of their history for posterity, they secretly created archives, diaries, drawings, photographs and songs to document Nazi crimes against their communities. During the same period many European Jews defied their Nazi oppressors by actively taking part in an underground war of resistance. This partisan warfare, carried out by clandestine, irregular forces operating inside enemy territory, was particularly widespread in the dense forests and nearly impassable marshlands of Eastern Europe. In 1942, the Supreme Partisan Headquarters in the Soviet Union extended its authority over the majority of partisan units in Eastern Europe and young Jewish fighters who escaped the ghettos joined the Russian partisans. Jewish partisan units were established in 1943, and the Yiddish language was now used for military communication, as well as for cultural and folkloric expression, such as poetry and song. This is a delightful album, full of energy and wit. The singing is magnificent and infectious. The CD booklet contains full texts of each song in English.

      5 out of 5 stars A must buy.......2005-06-09

We love this album! The songs are soothing but not saccharine, invigorating but not forced. Our four year old loves to dance to it and I can't get the songs out of my head so it ranks ten/ten on our scale.

5 out of 5 stars When the Rabbi danced.......2005-06-04

This wonderfully performed collection of familiar songs from the once vibrant Yiddish culture of Eastern Europe is a great addition to my music library. While many of the songs are classics which I remember well from my childhood, the sweetness and elegance of the presentation by Counterpoint add significantly to their impact. Even though most of the European Jewish community was destroyed in the holocaust, these wonderful melodies survived to inspire us today, and to remind us that all was not lost. The arrangements, harmonies and solos are marvelous, and the Yiddish and Hebrew pronunciation are flawless.
It's obvious that a lot of work by some very talented people went into creating this album. Listening to it brings back many bittersweet memories that stir my emotions - It is my sincere hope that Counterpoint will continue to perform such music in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars You must own this CD!.......2005-02-22

What makes this collection of melodies unique is the marriage of traditional tunes with the less frequently heard songs of resistance and longing from the dark time of the Holocaust.
The beautifully arranged and performed vocals are, by turns, haunting and spirited, mournful and whimsical, taking the listener through the full range of emotions. To hear Counterpoint in concert is an unforgettable experience. This equally stirring CD will leave you feeling just as proud and uplifted, as expressed by the closing words of the final song (Zog Nit Keynmol)..."We are here!"

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of songs!.......2005-01-03

This collection of Hebrew and Yiddish songs, arranged by Counterpoint conductor Robert de Cormier and Viktor Ullmann, offers a unique view into Jewish life of the shtetl to the Nazi-used Czech town of Terezin and the underground Jewish resistance of WWII. From the "young widowed mother sitting by the cradle" in "Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen" ("Raisins and Almonds"), to the uplifting "Zog nit Keynmol" ("Never say that you are on the Last Road"), the 25 songs on the CD are superbly performed by Counterpoint. Skillful instrumentals accompany a first-rate choral group, and the stylistic arrangements retain the flavor of the genre. "When the rabbi danced" deserves a place in any collection.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must-have!.......2004-12-27

I don't speak Yiddish. I am not a child - or relative - of Holocaust survivors. But this CD resonates for me in a unique way. I keep it in my car CD player and play it over and over. The evocative cumulative effect of the quality of Counterpoint's voices, the arrangements and the obvious poignancy and humor of the lyrics is hypnotic. I've given the CD as gifts to friends- to both Jews and non-Jews -and have not only received enthusiastic thanks and praise for the CD, but requests for information on how to buy more for their friends and family!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-03

This is a truly wonderful and very enjoyable set of chamber music recordings, and the performances/recordings are excellent. If you are interested in Czech music, Dvorak, Fibich, or Suk (of course), then you really should get this. ... If, after this, you still want more - there's also an excellent recording by the Suk Quartet on CRD of the 1st and 2nd string quartets and some other pieces. ... Also, the Pavel Stepan recording on Supraphon (3 CD set) of Suk's complete piano music is great.

4 out of 5 stars Only complete Suk collection that I know of.......2004-03-03

I am glad to see that this collection is still in print and available. For those who love Suk and his chamber music, this collection is a must-have. Suk's best-known chamber works are probably his two string quartets & the 4 pieces for violin & piano, and they are beautifully rendered on this collection. Most of the violin solos are performed by the composer's grandson, the great Josef Suk, and are as good as any performance available. A number of different ensembles are featured in this collection, with recordings dating from the late 1960's to the mid-1980's. This was not a pre-planned recording project, but rather a true collection of previously existing recordings. I seriously doubt that a significant number of these pieces are available anywhere else.

Listening to these works makes one wish that Suk had devoted a little more time to composition. As it is, his body of work is relatively small. Suk is a lot like Enescu --- a tremendously talented musician, but one that had an awful lot of irons in the fire. His work as a soloist & chamber music performer (not to mention as a pedagogue) left him with not a lot of time to compose, and that is unfortunate. We should be grateful that he left us what he did, and that it is available on a relatively affordable collection.

Zdenék Fibich (1850-1900) is the forgotten Czech romantic, perhaps because he wasn't as nationalistic as Smetana and Dvorák. But for sheer beauty, his music rivals theirs. This disc is a good introduction, although it's only 51:19, leaving plenty of room for another piece like Fibich's beautiful Trio. (These performers are two-thirds of the Suk Trio! Where's that slacker cellist?) Still, what's here is thoroughly lovely. Fibich's Sonatina is light and brief; his Violin Sonata is more substantial, and its themes more memorable. Perhaps the most attractive piece, though, is a Concert Polonaise, a rousing piece that sounds like very good Dvorák to our ears, although Fibich came first. It's good to hear Suk at 71, in a sparkling 2000 recording, playing so well. The music may not be very virtuosic, but he has complete command of all of it and in the "Song Without Words" he gives a convincing illusion of playing two violins at once. Hála, a longtime partner of Suk, plays assertively when the music gives him the opportunity and accompanies sensitively throughout. The program notes make confusing reference to another Fibich Violin Sonata, which isn't here and apparently doesn't exist, but they are otherwise admirably informative. --Leslie Gerber
