OOH LA LA. I LIKE IT MYLENE FARMER. VERY GOOD FOR COLLECTION

Old habits are hard to break!.......2006-12-23

Okay...where do I begin? First of all, I'm disappointed and un-inspired with the product (a result of rushing out of the store without listening to the CD before buying it). In the past, Mylene Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat have produced mighty fine material (both studio and live recordings). Unfortunately, "A.Q.L - L.A.B." contains multiple borrowed ideas (good & bad) from the Mylenium Tour concert. In my opinion, things only get worse this time because of the absence of the magic Mylene and Laurent have produced in the past, and that I used to feel when listening to the "L.A.B" concert. "AQL - LAB" is only mediocre on CD. Fortunately, the DVD is said to be ten times better, since the visual aspects always make up for the latter. I've attended concerts where the live versions of songs ended up being better than the studio versions. Then, as a bonus comes the superb stage performances/presentation aspects.

I wish Mylene could've focused on Quality-over-Quantity during this and the Mylenium Tour CDs. It's sad but true. Obviously, this concert lacks in personality and sound and focuses too much on the costumes, backdrop and props. To me, it's way over the top at this point in her career. Borrowed Ideas? What I mean is that her biggest anthems (Sans Contrefaçon and Désenchantée) are lacking the appeal and flavor compared to the "L.A.B" concert. When this happens, all personality/feeling drains out, due to the new & upbeat arrangments. The "L.A.B" concert version of the above mentioned songs are the best. So, why not drop the tired, over-performed songs and delighting the fans with the lesser-performed older material? It's time for something new and exciting instead destroying her classic hits to the point of no return. As for the new material from the last studio recording, I like the songs because they're beautiful and easy to pull off in a live performance. From Disc One, I only like tarcks 4, 6 and 9. One Disc Two, I only like tracks 4, 8 and 10. That's only six tracks out of twenty-one. There are a couple other good songs among the other fifteen tracks, but I expected a whole lot more. I absolutely don't like what they did to Deshabillez-Moi. It's a perfect example of how much a song can lack any feeling or emotion. Even the scream was way off, which wrecked my mood right there.

Mylene is all about costumes and showing off her fantastic body. With a seemingly shortened hair length (only because of being bobby-pinned in all directions), and an ever-sexy, shy smile, she always looks good. The front cover of the booklet leaves a lot to be desired though, because I don't like the big red Mylene image on the screen. It just doesn't fit in with the rest of the artwork or design. The paper quality of the 16-page booklet is pretty good and glossy. The CDs are pretty and aren't like the other live CDs. Disc one has a silver background with a black silhouette of Mylene with red titling. Disc two features the negative version, with a black background and a silver silhouette, with red titling. In a way, the whole package seems very "thrown-together" compared to the other live albums. As I mentioned before, the sound quality isn't all that superior. Unless you have some really heavy headphones or a state-of-the-art entertainment system, you won't get strong bass from the recordings. The introduction is too long and doesn't focus enough on the actual song (track 2). Was a good try, though!

Two things I simply can't stand about Mylene's concerts are:
1- Being able to hear the Audience singing along to nearly all the upbeat songs on both discs (happens in the last 3 concerts).
2- songs that seem to end but start over again (Sans Contrefacon and Desenchantee), as well as XXL (on this recording)
On a positive note...I do appreciate the fact that all the songs are long.

This one's really good for the die-hard Mylene fans. But I recommend you listen to it before buying, because you're really not getting all that much.

Spectacular!!!!.......2006-12-31

OK, Living in San Diego, We have limited resources on French Music. There are some places to find good stuff, but Luckely I found Ms. Farmer before the only store that had her closed down. Well to the review, Mylene is my favorite singer, altought I have never seen her live. She is absolutely SEXY and her lyrics are uncomparable. She is a true star!! Owning all of her CD's with this live performance, Ms. Mylene does it again. All the material is very easy to sing along with and it feels as if you are in the audience. Very cristal clear sound and the audience does not overpower the performance but they are sining along with her, its a live performace what do you expect? This performance feels much more personal with an erotism that I have never felt with other live CD's. Ms. farmer is more with the audience and it is a very vissual show, (can't wait for the DVD). The booklet is beautifuly arranged, very glossy with TRES-Sexie photos of Mylene in her beautiful wardrobe. The cd case is also wounderful, for it is a limited edition and worth every penny. I prefere this box over the Mylenium Box for this one is not metal and does not give a funny smell. The cd's are in two different flaps and each have diferent photos of Mylene. This is a MUST for every fan of Ms. Farmer. Hopefuly I will see her live one day.

If vocalist Eddie Vedder took any foreign-language courses in high school, my bet is that they were French. He at least attempts to speak a few phrases, and sprinkles words here and there (even if his pronunciation and accent aren't so hot), unlike other shows on the tour in which he basically speaks as though he's back in the States. Two hard-hitting tunes off of Binaural--the fast, punky "God's Dice" and the staccato stutter-step of "Evacuation"--are included in the set. The sweet, hummable melody of "In Hiding" is a welcome addition, and the usual improv jam in the middle of "Rearviewmirror" turns the song into a particularly inspiring closer. Lead guitarist Mike McCready makes his presence felt in a big way on this date, taking his usual smokin' solos from Ten's "Even Flow" and "Black" to screaming crescendos. Neil Young's "Fuckin' Up," at the end of the encore, is also a bonus in this already powerful performance. --Adem Tepedelen

A Pretty Tight Performance........2007-06-20

This live performance captured in Bercy is one of the best from the European tour back in 2000. Its a tight, energetic, and largely enjoyable show. Both for new fans and old ones as well. The band makes only a few flub ups during the show. Ed messes up the lyrical arrangment in Evacuation, but its still a pretty good version! One of the guitars messes up at the beginning of Hail Hail. Thats the only flaw that really sticks out. Pretty much thats the only 2 big mistakes. Theres a little messed up note at the very beginning of In Hiding, but it actually sounds kinda cool. It ends up being a good version of the song. Gods Dice and Yellow Ledbetter are the real stick outs of the show. Both songs are played a lot better than normal. Especially Ledbetter. Ive not heard a better or cooler version of the song. Its the only version I even listen to! Ive read a review of this album where they said it was only an average performance and that Eds voice was weak here. They couldnt be more wrong. Ed really sounds good at this show. AS he did for most of the 2000 tour. That statement made me wait to get this show instead of going ahead and buying it. If you happen to want to try to buy this, dont let that opinion stop you beacause this is out of print and that price may change from 20 dollars to 90! This show is very good and I recommend it to anyone who may still be wanting to buy these older shows.

An Underrated Release.......2005-08-05

This show from the City of Light has been unfairly tagged as boringly professional. While the "professional" aspect is certainly evident (it is one of the more mistake-free shows from the tour), the "boring" part is highly subjective. To me, the band sounds intent on hitting every note as hard as they can, but making sure it is the right note. They certainly do not mail in this performance; just listen to Mike McReady bear down on "Even Flow", and you'll get the idea. One of the better European bootlegs. Don't miss it!

My first PJ concert.......2002-02-18

This was my first pearl jam concert ever. Im from mexico, and since the band has never been here i had the opportunity to see them when i was in france. The concert started out rocking with sometimes. This was one of the most intense performances i had ever seen. The set continued to flow in an impressive beautifull manner. Everything was perfect in the show. All the pauses (most of which are not included in the cds), everything Eddie said, all the music. Perhaps what i didnt like much was the lack of a new cover or an improv, but all in all the show was absolutely fabulous. In my opinion this show is in between the 15 best shows of the tour.

Tres Bien in Gay Paree.......2001-11-02

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This is an above-average performance and one of the highlights of the European portion of the 2000 bootleg series. Unlike in all of the other non-English speaking nations on the tour, Eddie Vedder speaks to the crowd in their own language here, perhaps remembering some old high school French lessons. Regardless, large portions of the crowds in those other countries understood Eddie's English anyway (unless they were just happy to hear him say anything), but Eddie works this Parisian crowd well and they are extra enthusiastic. This show presents an especially strong performance by the band, with Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron laying down the rhythms flawlessly, while Mike McCready's solos are even more intense than usual. While there are some crushing heavy rockers here, like "Gods' Dice," "Go," and "Hail Hail," on this evening the band really shine on the mid-tempo numbers. This includes very impressive renditions of "In Hiding," "Wishlist" (which was rather sappy in its original form but is much stronger throughout this tour), and the best "Yellow Ledbetter" to this point in the series.

Nice long diverse show for the average fan, plus some extras.......2000-09-29

Great standard set list from the European tour with a few nice extras. Highlights from the main set are the rarely played "Pilate," "In Hiding," and an excellent version of "RVM." The encore is pretty standard although begins with three rocking numbers, "Hail, Hail," "Go," and "Once." Not an amazing show but solid none-the-less.

Marvelous, haunting compositions.......2001-08-18

"À Bercy" was the first Corsican CD I ever listened to, and was a great introduction to the polyphonic Corsican style. I Muvrini manages to convey a rare depth of emotion in almost every single track. The songs alternate between merry, sing-along tunes and powerful, slow, haunting melodies that transport you to the rocky streams of the Corsican countryside.

The mood of the CD is set by the first two tracks: the first one, "Ne fermez pas la porte" is a poem in French, accompanied by music, that speaks in strong terms of the Corsicans' aspiration for freedom. The second track, by contrast, is fast and extravagant, joyously sung in Corsican. While the CD alternates between these two moods, all the other tracks contain songs, almost all of them in Corsican.

The only thing that does not fit in with the rest of the album are the song titles: they are mostly listed in English and French in an album that seeks to assert a Corsican identity. Apart from this matter of editorial choice, I found the album to be thoroughly refreshing and highly enjoyable.

Alpha Blondy at his best!.......2005-03-10

This is Alpha Blondy's best CD by far. His live performance in this CD is a masterpiece. If you don't have this CD in your collection, you are missing one of the great CD's ever recorded. You don't have to speak the language to appreciate the musical genius of the entire band.

a real good cd.......2002-07-27

I recommend this cd. It is a double cd and represents the greatness of Alpha Blondy. He is a cool dude and probably my next favorite artist to Bob Marley. Tracks 8 "Sweet Fanta Diallo" and 9 "Assinie Mafia" are two great songs back to back. I wish my copy hadn't gotten scratched cause it is hard to find, but you can always order it off this site.

Best Live Reggae since Bob Marley and the Wailers........2001-07-22

The best live reggae recording since Bob Marley and the Wailers Live. This two CD live recording captures Alpha Blondy and his band at their best. Alpha Blondy surrounds himself with a great reggae rhythm group but also horns and voices. The music is reggae dancing at its best. CD will remind you not only of the Wailers but also Paul Simon's Graceland. Lyrics are in English and French, however it does not matter as the music says it all. This is a perfect summer CD, will have you dancing no matter where you are.

Classic Blondy Vibe, New Millennium Style.......2001-06-20

This two-disc set kept me groovin' all afternoon. It's an excellent collection of tracks done live, alpha-millennium style, with nary a dud in the bunch.

This album is good but not great. It captures Youssou live- but the sound is not stellar, and the set list is comprised mostly of Youssou's more Western-sounding songs. A bit uninspiring compared to the highly recommeneded "Best of 80's" & "Gran Bal 1&2"(live).

And don't give me that 'But it's in French' nonsense. Since when did the exact meaning of the words ever surpass the quality of the music? So many Americans need to throw off a huge burden of arrogance and isolationism before they are ever going to get to enjoy and profit from the musical wonders this world has to offer.

Mylene at her best.......2004-03-20

Frankly I feel that I'm more than a Mylene fan...I regard her as the grandiose, mysterious, super-goddess-supreme of Pop Music... It's a shame she's not well known world wide!

This was the first cd (and a double-cd!!) of Mylene that I bought, and I'm still listening to it regularly...her live renditions of such classics as "Sans Contrefacon", "Mon Coeur est Lache", "Je T'aime Melancolie", are truly gems...and some versions even surpass the originals from studio albums (i.e.: "Libertine").

This concert was made in 1997, two years after the release of Mylene's last studio album by then, "Anamorphosee"...and obviously it features much of its songs, most notably "XXL" (a great showstopper), "Alice" (so sexy), "California", "Comme J'ai Mal"....I even don't speak french that well, but anyway her songs catch me under its spell...and I even sort of understand the lyrics pretty well, they're magic for me.

Well, I have to admit that I became such an ardent fan of Mylene, that I bought a multizone dvd equipment which also converts PAl norm to NTSC, and bought her four (available) dvd's at Amazon.france and Amazon.germany. They're all greaaattt (worth every "EURO" I had to pay)...especially the dvd of this Concert (Just A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!) and Music Videos Numbers II & III, which features her video clips from her "Anamorphosee" (1995) and "Innamoramento" (1999) albums, plus "Mon Coeur est Lache".

Sensible and sensual.......2004-02-17

Mylène's shows have always been superb, both musically and visually. A lot of hi-tech is used and Mylène makes it easier on herself by using sequencers (some vocal parts are pre-recorded). However, I guess that's the only way to do these kind of shows where the singer dances almost continuously. The songs sound very big and powerful compared to the studio versions and she's got one hell of a band behind her who are not afraid to improvise. Her songs are mostly about her fears and doubts, about being lost in an incomprehensive world. When Mylène sings a song like "rêver" she's likely to break down and cry as on this album. And you can bet that half of the audience is crying too when that happens ... But when she puts a dance beat to her words of complete depression like on "désenchantée", the songs become sing-along party hits ! Her rich vocabulary and a good sense of observation only help to make her music so good. And yes, Mylène seems to have it all. She's fragile, feminine but also sexy and provocative. Myléne's the kind of girl that calls out for help and makes you wish that you were there to rescue her. Very captivating.

Papillon de nuit.......2000-07-18

Live concerts have always been an important part of Mylene's oeuvre, and "Live a Bercy" is an absolutely worthwhile item for fans. It's obvious that the visual element is missing here, but nevertheless, this powerful and entertaining set has the magical feel of an erotic dream. Many songs here are taken from 1995's "Anamorphosee", and although I don't like these songs as much as Mylene's earlier ones, the rock-oriented, organic sound of this album is very suitable for live performance. A few classic tracks like "Sans contrefacon" and "Desenschantee" are thrown in, and it's a credit to Mylene and her band that they are not just duplicating the original versions. Also, there's some new material here; "Que mon coeur.." and "La poupee..", the latter one being a duet with Algerian pop star Khaled. A stunning art-work package with silver-colored hard-cover, a thick photo booklet, and other gimmicks rounds off this great double-disc set. The best photo shows Mylene sitting on the back of a huge metal spider. In my opinion, "Live a Bercy" is one of the best live performances of the '90, but I'm going to wait for the DVD edition.

Great French Pop CD!.......2000-05-28

I bought this CD not knowing who Mylene was. I just thought the cover was very unique & figured it should be good. Well, since then, Mylene's been one of my favorite female singers of all time. Her voice is very expressive & music is very electrifying. I really did not care for the instrumental solos. They sounded too much like 80's hair band solos. But anyway, if you have seen "Macross Plus" Japanese animation series, Mylene is the real life "Sharon Apple". Now I need to get a hold of her live video & get immersed in it. Anyone know where to get one? I know it's out there somewhere!

Awesome concert, very different from regular versions.......1999-11-22

I dislike "live" CDs in general but I must say Mylene Farmer does an awesome performance on this one. The songs are so different from the regular versions it's a special treat. Even if you have the regular versions, you won't be bored with this CD.
