Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15

Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).

Best Brightman CD.......2007-02-07

A classical composition which showcases the beautiful voice of Sarah Brightman. A timeless CD which will continue to be a favourite over the years.

Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02

Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.

Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30

After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.

OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!

Nice Cover.......2006-12-27

I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).

As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.

In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

A Great CD - This Lady Can Sing!!.......2007-08-05

I've been a Tiffany fan since the beginning of her career. When I found out that she was releasing this album, and writing some of the songs, I was very excited to hear it. I just loved her previous cd "Color of Silence", so I couldn't wait to hear her new stuff. When I finally got the CD I wasn't disappointed. What a great CD. The songs on this CD really show Tiffany's great vocal skills. I particularly like the songs Just Me, Be Alright, and Mind Candy.
I recently had the opportunity to see Tiffany live, and I must say her voice is terrific. Her vocal range and performance enthusiam made for a great show. Afterward I had the opportunity to meet Tiffany, and she was so genuine and warm. This lady is truly a talented singer and a nice person. I can't wait to hear more from her in the future.

Used To The POP vibe and got a ROCK treat!.......2007-07-19

Tiffany is back, edgier and smooth. The first track, "Feels Like Love" has sort of a Belinda Carlisle vibe, as you can see she hasn't gone too far from her 80's roots and that is OK. An earnest, lovely track, to start the CD. "Just Me", is the standard self realization track, you always find on former teen icons adult CDs. This reminds me a lot of Danny Wood's (Y'all remember him, he was in NKOTB) 'What If' off his Second Face CD. "Be Alright" has that deep, dark rock ballad style! Yes! Sort of a 'Carnival (think Natalie Merchant) vibe', again a self realization track, good.

"Hiding Behind The Face" is a country-esque ballad. All of those 'look in the mirror' and "see" yourself type tracks, if you are looking for that, then this is it! Basically, to see yourself for what you are, not just whats on the surface. "Calling Out Your Name" finds our starlet, thinking about that special love, whether he is in her life or not is irrelevant, because there is a part of him that she still holds in her heart. "Mind Candy" goes back to that country vibe. This cut here, is for all you dreamers out there, thinking about that person you are in love with and he/she doesn't even know it.

"Anyone But Me" is a great ballad, about being true to yourself, no matter what people think, especially the media, she gets many opinions, to change her and she reject them all and she now knows to just be the best 'you', you can be! "Streets Of Gold" is old school rock, I mean, Desperado from the Eagles was awesome right, well think of a contemporary version of that and this would be it, Tiffany did an awesome job with this one! Very dark, very prolific. "This Love" sort of goes back to that poetic rock vibe think The Doors, Jim Carroll, that sort of thing, maybe she has some skeletons in her closet with this one, LOL, but don't we all.

"Winter's Over" sees a relationship ending, but there is more nostalgia and heartache in this piece. It is brilliantly written and some would call it a tear jerker, don't believe me, turn out the lights, close your eyes, and listen to the words. "I Will Not Breakdown" finds her going down that road to self preservation. So many trials, so many mountains to climb, it is easy to lose your way, just keep looking ahead and the past will push you along. Amen to that sister!

All in all this is a good CD, I mean, all pop icons mature and all of them have a story to tell and I feel that this one is Tiffany's story, have a listen, you wont be sorry.

Growing as an Artist.......2007-07-10

I was very pleased with most of the songs on this CD. I really enjoyed Colour of Silence and as well as this one. I don't know why artists like Tiffany or Debbie (Deborah) Gibson get ragged on by people when you have artists like Brittany, Ashlee Simpson (so many others to name) that don't have a quality voice like Tiffany or D Gibson. Tiffany's music today is so much better than the calculated music she made in the 1980s. More Personnal. If you have been a long time fan I recommend it. If you like Alanis "Jagged Little Pill" CD I recommend "Just Me" and "Colour of Silence" by Tiffany.

Tiffany Comes Back and Really Lays Out A Musical Collection!.......2007-06-28

Hiding Behind The Face is a pretty good song, as well as Calling Out Your Name. Mind Candy is a fun song to hear Tiffany sing. And, of course, I Will Not Breakdown from her CD Color Of Silence (2000) is good to hear once again.

My least favorites are:

Anyone But Me

Overall, this CD is amazing! I have always loved Tiffany's music. This is yet another impressive and well-written CD and I hope that Tiffany continues writing songs and selling records in the future.

Hold An Old Friends Hand.......2007-06-25

Tiffany strays away from the all dance sound that she did so well in 2005 with `Dust Off And Dance' and gets back to the singer-songwriter sound of her best yet CD (in my opinion) of 2000's `The Color Of Silence' without missing a beat. Tiffs voice is in superb form and the music/lyrics is as catchy as when she first came out 20+ years ago minus the cheesiness.

Her leadoff single is "Feels Like Love" which is a pretty simplistic melody but with Tiffany's voice she breathes such life into the song. You will be humming and singing it in no time.
Every song just falls into place on this set offering a different glimpse into Tiffany's life right now. Each song offers something different and the lyrics are raw and the hooks are very melodic and radio friendly at the same time. For such an underrated artist Tiffany just keeps coming out with CD after CD and pleases her fans everywhere. `Just Me' is no exception to that rule - it's a very personal CD with a lot of emotion in every song.

Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

In 1972 it probably seemed like the year belonged to a blues-tinged wall-of-sound rock band--maybe Deep Purple, who recorded Made in Japan that year--but from an aesthetic vantage, the blues-rock mantle has to go Captain Beefheart. In 1972 producer Ted Templeman took the controls for a pair of stunning Beefheart diamonds (in the rough of course), The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot, both collected here in full on one CD. Beefheart's voice sounds rightly inimitable, growly and gruff and lyrically cryptic. For its part, the Magic Band is in top form as well, integrating marimba and an assortment of percussion into the slide guitar forestry. There's a distinct and good reason that the celebrated Beefheart box set of rarities is called Grow Fins: the tune, as it appears on this collection, is a classic terrain-defying testament of love as only Don Van Vliet (Beefheart) could provide, a surreal and funny little tune caught in a skein of rough-hewn music that's stood the test of time splendidly. --Andrew Bartlett

Does it matter?.......2007-01-11

Some albums/songs create a moment's transcendence in a life harried by the day to day. Some artists create a moment's identification between me and the music. And then there are the artists who have changed the way I think about the world. Don Van Vliet is of the second type in my ears. He opened my eyes to the golf ball around me and for that I am in his debt. And to the point, Clear Spot is the album that I think of when I think of the captain (not that I don't respect The Spotlight Kid). I haven't owned a copy since I was 17 and I can still hear the songs echoing through the canyons of my mind. I repurchased this combo a few months back and after all these years my memory only matches the music. How often can we say that?
In the 21st Century I listen to RadioHead or Mark Sandman (see ya on the flip side) or Tom Waits and I can hear Van Vliet in all of them. He is the musician's musician because, to me, he dared to walk out into the void and embrace what he found there. I am happy to blabber and smoke in his company.
If you like Captain Beefheart's peculiar distillation of life you will love this album.

The Captain's One Successful Sellout.......2007-01-08

Five stars reflects the bodacious Clear Spot, even if it is cobbled together with a rather mediocre Spotlight Kid.

Spotlight features the Captain's greatest Magic Band, just finishing touring what was arguably his finest achievement: Lick My Decals Off Baby (still out of circulation!). However, the Captain in desperate pursuit of commercial success now pushed the band hard ever increasing the cult-like discipline. The result was a fairly monolithic trad-blues product. Actually any one of the cuts off the Spotlight album are pretty good, but taken altogether, it's rather a drag.

The Magic Band was pretty well fed up by this point. Drumbo and Rocket Morton took off, moving Art Tripp to drums and recruiting Oregon (former Mother, later Little Feet) to bass, as well as Elliot Ingber. Zoot Horn Rollo and producer Ted Templeton basically through Don out of the control booth.

Suddenly the possibility of merging the Captain's dada sensibility with a fairly rocking production emerged. There was room for the intensely beautiful Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles with the outrageous fun of Big Eyed Beans from Venus and Golden Birdies. (Webcor, Webcor!)

That his subsequent sell-outs were so pitiful has more to do with the loss of the rest of his band (after discovering he had dissed them out of their tour money) than any loss of his prodigious talent. His three last classic albums proved that.

But for those sonic adventurers rightly attracted to the great Captain's underground adventures, don't forget to check out his one legitimate shot at FM play (even if the industry proved too ignorant to actually play this stuff). It's a qualified hoot.

A must have .......2006-09-26

This is unbelievably great. You get two of Captain Beefheart's masterpieces here; The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot. Making this a double album which easily holds it's own with integrity next to any that have been released. It is just that strong. I have always been a fan of double albums and these two go together perfectly. Because they were actually conceived separately they are both strong and hold their own so putting them together is a Beefheart fan's dream come true. It is not Trout Mask Replica, which I adore, but some of the greatest blues you're likely to hear bar none. Everything about it is superb. If you are not completely insane you'll not hesitate to get this and you'll be glad you did. It is what blues aspires to be and a treasure that far too few will be fortunate enough to understand and appreciate.

great wild bluesy experimental verbal goodness.......2006-05-13

The Magic Band was at a high point (Though Zoot Horn Rollo says that they didnt' play that well on Spotlight Kid, he recommends Clear Spot) the guitars are groovin' the tracks are exciting and Beefheart's Howlin' Wolf-esque vocals are brilliant on this pair of records.

There are standout tracks all over this collection.
And for fun you can watch a couple of videos on Youtube.com of songs from this collection - Black Eyed Peas from Venus is one of them - great psychedelica - and I'm gonna Booglarize you - with the band bouncing and jamming like something put together by spike jonez.

anyway - you can't go wrong if you like rock, blues, or good guitar noise.

Discovery! At the Five Spot documents emerging tenor giant John Coltrane's brief, but eventful six month residency with pianist-composer Thelonious Monk at New York's Five Spot. Monk was reestablishing his stature and drawing power as a jazz innovator while Coltrane grew by leaps and bounds studying Monk's repertoire and learning to navigate his compositions not just rhythmically and harmonically but thematically as well. Monk's melodies were too strong simply to run the changes, and on his extended jaunt Monk's tricky, intricate obstacle course "Trinkle, Tinkle," Coltrane attacks the harmonies with such compulsive power and blissful abandon, that you can hear whole new vistas of sound revealed to the tenor saxophonist. Recorded on a dinky tape machine by Coltrane's wife Naima, the sound is vague, hissy, and distorted--yet vivid and inspiring because on none of the few studio recordings documenting this period do Trane and Monk play with such unrestrained intensity. Get this disc for only one thing - Coltrane's insane, hyper-extended solo on "I Mean You!!" And that version of "In Walked Bud" is pretty damn good too!

Great gig for Monk and Trane but quality of recording is very poor since it was mastered with a home tape recorded

Uninhibited Monk/Coltrane brilliance.......2002-10-22

Forget the poor quality recording, just listen to the music. This live concert shows Monk and Coltrane totall uninhibited, free to impose their visions onto the canvas of the music. Coltrane's solos are amazing, especially on 'I mean you'. There's also, among other things, a short and snappy version of 'Epistrophy.'

A fun little journey, and it doesn't sound too bad.......2002-04-11

I see that a lot of folks have been criticizing the sound quality here. When I found this at my public library I hesitated. We've all heard BAD recordings that were put out only to line someone's pockets. In this case, even if the sound quality were terrible, I would still argue for its release. For Coltrane fans especially, this is a rare chance to hear him in one of his least recorded periods. The music is fun and the sound quality is much BETTER than I was expecting. For me, it falls somewhere in between the static of very early 1920's recordings (Louis Armstrong comes to mind) and the house chatter of the classic Bill Evans disc "Sunday at the Village Vanguard." There is crowd noise, but not TOO much, the music is fairly well balanced as far as one microphone recordings go. Monk's piano occasionally comes close to drowning out Coltrane. Considering the circumstances under which it was recorded, I was pleasantly surprised by how listenable this disc is. This is a sound album, quality quartet arrangements.

Excellent small band versions of "Epistrophy," "Trinkle, Tinkle," and "In Walked Bud." "Epistrophy" is radically different from other versions I have heard.

So what if the sound quality is that of a dirty bar room hurrah. That's what this is!! Not all great jazz can be Columbia quality reissues. I think the mumblings and minor defects in the master tape add to the ambience of the scene. Sort of time and spacey. Wine glasses, clanging...

This is a beautiful work by the master composer Rachmaninoff. I have been a fan of his work, but when I heard this recording it nearly blew me away. Listen to Vocalise - the beauty of this track is what sold me on the rest of the album.

Ms. Battle does it again.......2006-03-29

Ms. Battle covers musical styles from baroque all the way to spirituals on this CD, and excels at each song she sings. My personal fav's are "Frondi tenere...ombra mai fu" "Mein herr marquis" "Vocalise" "Swing Low" "Piangero la sorte mia". One impression I get when I hear this CD, is that Ms. Battle had fun with each one of these songs. She sounds like she is enjoying singing them and is totally relaxed with full confidence in her voice. So many singers you hear sound tense, but not here. It's hard to explain really, but generally, when a singer is struggling and fighting to sustain a good sound or sing artistically, you can sense it. This CD is would make a wonderful sampler for someone new to Ms. Battle's voice. It is a shame, though, that she is such a "diva". Nevertheless, this is a delightful recording and I would strongly recommend it.

This recital is a pale shadow of the great one Battle gave with Levine from Salzburg, so I wasn't satisfied with one track after another of pretty, charming singing without deep musicality or committment. battle is capable of much beter. Her fans will be pleased, and that's about all.

Kathleen Battle Takes On Carnegie Hall.......2005-04-04

Every big artist wants to perform at Carnegie Hall, its' a sign of a true career. For Kathleen Battle, this must have been quite a night. This album captures that great night, solely built around her, in which she sang aria after aria in a spectacular showcase. Handel was a specialty of hers, and the lyric texture and coloratura heights are nearly dizzying. She makes it all seem so effortless. Furthermore, Miss Battle was a magnificent French singer- most coloratura sopranos excell in the French repertoire- as Beverly Sills did and as did Madie Mesple. However, Battle always makes me feel mixed emotions. One the one hand, she does have a classic, lyric-coloratura voice that nearly became extinct after the reign of Beverly Sills and even earlier with the likes of Lily Pons and Amellita-Galli-Curci. Battle has a bright, golden voice, capable of sweetness and refinement without hysterical declamation or any unpleasant sounds. It's such a shame she did not behave proffessionally. The stories were true. She behaved like a diva holding a whip! She was ungrateful and selfish and couldn't work well with her colleagues and co-artists. She was always late to rehearsals, left early, refused to socialize or ride in the same car with her other artists and went far beyond perfectionism- she behaved like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But for all these shortcomings, we love her voice. Her fans, and yes she has fans, continue to buy her albums even though she has long disappeared from the world of opera that once tolerated her but said enough is enough........

God made the nightingale, and somewhere down the line, he touched a little girl named Kathleen Battle with what he originally gave to that bird from the beginning of creation. I cannot, for the life of me, believe that a voice could be so beautiful. I hear it, I marvel, but sometimes the sheer incredible beauty of this woman's vocal artistry is mind altering and surreal. Even the nightingale must suffer a moment of jealousy when a Kathy Battle tune is played!(This is bordering on blasphemous I know, and I beg forgiveness!) But Kathy Battle is simply amazing! This CD captures her at her best.
I'm not an opera buff by any means, but I love the human voice and great singing. There is not a bad song in the bunch. Like one reviewer, I too, am not a big fan of the spirituals segment, but I have a higher tolerance for it than she..I can still enjoy them for what they're worth.

Just BUY this CD...buy more than one if you can. One for home and one for your car. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

P.S. Can someone tell me if this Carnegie Hall recital was also filmed and where I can get a copy of it? I cannot find many filmed recitals of Kathleen Battle anywhere. There used to be many at the Metropolitan Library in NYC, but all they seem to have now are her appearances in operas. I remember seeing a Met recital of her in a red gown on the cover of the vhs box, but they must have retired it. Any Kathy Battle fans out there who can help me get a video collection going, I would be most appreciated! (ryanmarcus1@juno.com)

Kathleen has a beautiful voice, and it's wonderful to have a CD that includes both traditional opera pieces as well as fun gospel songs. I recommend this!

Most of us have had real-life kisses that felt less sexy than Gerald Levert's best soul songs. On the unabashedly sensual The G Spot, Levert creates music so intimate that you almost want to turn you head away from the stereo to give the man some privacy. That's absolutely true of the title track, which graphically illustrates how Levert pleases his lady, while reenacting his own release. You don't hear that every day, but it's easy to forgive the chart-topping singer, songwriter, and producer such titillating excess, because the rest of the disc is so damn good. The slow-grooving "Funny" paints smirking come-hither lyrics across a lazy swell of strings and a wheezing organ. Album highlight "Raindrops" is a fleet-footed classic, its chiming chorus forming a pop hook sharp enough to carve alabaster. Only the first song, "Too Much Room," featuring rapper Mystikal, and the finger-snapping doo-wop charmer "Your Smile" depart from the cozy R&B template that is Levert's calling card, but even on those, Levert's deep, almost textured voice is spellbinding. Another Winner.......2007-03-08

This modern R&B stalwart has always offered the perfect blend of dreamy old-school soul textures; jangly, guitar-driven atmospheres; and slick, modern funk grooves. And oh, that voice -- mellow and sexy, seductive to the core. The best "come to beddy bye" tone since Barry White, and so steeped in that era. The vibe on "Too Much Room" artfully merges all of those things and sounds like a modern twist on the O'Jays (where his dad, Eddie Levert, still holds court), but he gets a little ambitious with the sometimes-annoying scowl/screech of guest artist Mystical. "Since You Ain't Around" is all bedroom-eyes fun, his vocals almost a plea. "Wilding Me Out" has a sparse production (mostly just Fender Rhodes and a rhythm track) which allows for one of the clearest vocal tracks on the recording. Levert will hopefully educate some of his fans to the art of jazz with the inclusion of Roy Ayers' vibes on "Oh What a Night." Levert's scatting duet with Ayers is a highlight

It was actually difficult for me to listen to the title track "the G Spot", and not laugh out loud. All of the songs except for one are written by Levert, but G Spot sounds like he is literally making it up as the track plays in the backgoround. The lyrics are uninspired....as if he picked them up from some cheap porno movie.

There are plenty of other vocalists in this genre that sing, write and sound 100 times better. I'm glad I picked this up from the local library and didn't have to pay for it.

If I were on a cruise and Levert was announced as the musical guest, I'd jump overboard.

Gerald Levert is the Jay-Z of R&B in that he releases an album every year (side note: 2000's G was supposed to drop in 1999). But unlike Jay-Z, none of his albums stink. Add The G Spot to your list of overall great Gerald releases.

The album starts off with "Too Much Room" with Mystikal (which was supposed to be Gerald's first single, but due to Mystikal's legal matters, they changed it to "Funny"). This song is meant to be a club-rocker and things go fine until Mystikal starts spitting his usual cliches like, "Get on the floor!!!" If you're more used to classic Gerald, then "Wildin' Me Out" and "Closure" may be more up your alley. The former has dope percussion and a good storyline, while the latter is a tear-jearker. All of these qualities are typical of Gerald.

Other good songs are "Your Smile" featuring newcomer Zero (check out the Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terell's "Precious Love" sample), "All That Matters" (check the O'Jays "Family Reunion" sample--Gerald uses all of these samples subtlely and well), and "Oh What a Night" with Roy Ayers. Here, Roy gives a great performance that'll have fans reminiscing on when he played with Eric Benet on 1999's "When You Think of Me". I also liked "Funny" when he laughs at the end; I think that's, well, funny.

I was surprised when I saw a reviewer say that he needs to stop songwriting. Actually, Gerald does that the best: see "Catchin' Feelings" and "Backbone". With only a few songs that could have been left behind ("Raindrops"; the title track, which will only appeal to women; and "Top of My Head", where he revisits falsetto-land with okay results), this album isn't a classic but it's good enough. While Love & Consequences and Gerald's World remain as Gerald's best albums, The G Spot is still the place to get to.

Frontman Eef Barzelay's lovably awkward voice, simple melodies, and brainy, bent lyrics remain the focus on Clem Snide's fourth disc, but the band swaps the naked popcraft of its minor hit "Moment in the Sun" for an approach at once more adventurous and somber. Though Jason Glasser has mostly played violin and cello in the past, here he employs a closetful of organ, chimes, bells, and percussion, and the results animate the album's mostly slow, stately songs. Under the watchful eye of producer Joe Chiccarelli (Tim Easton, American Music Club), the dreamy descending melody of "All Green" is spiked by playful chimes, "Happy Birthday" rides high-kicking horns and honky-tonk guitar, and "Action" soon collapses from a giddy banjo line and shuffling beat into a happy clatter of vibes and percussion. Barzelay's best lines, meanwhile, capture close observations in unexpected turns of phrase, as in "Close the Door" ("I caught you doubting yourself in the mirror, but you sure look good to me") and "All Green" ("Feed me a kiss, chapped lips and all"). --Anders Smith Lindall

Why don't you flush yourself too while you're at it, Fred? Aren't you witty and clever? Why you're as gonzo as Lester Bangs. Too bad you have no ears on your head. Why did you buy this in the first place if it is so far from your taste in music? Could it be you are just clueless about how to find what suits you? No, this isn't their best. YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC is probably a better pick. Not for you, though. You need something to ROCK to, right ? None of this MELLOW stuff. Poetry is for poofs. The sooner you leave these parts the better! Here's your hat - what's your hurry?

Have you ever taken a nap on a warm spring day under a tree? Ever gone straight from the lake to the kitchen and made a grilled cheese sandwich in your wet bathing suit? Have you ever had a crush on someone because of the radio staion they listen to? If not, you probably will not like this album. For everyone else (especially if you like Sufjan Stevens, Elliot Smith, or the Decemberists)this is a fine album. The playful spirit, the great melodies, and the conversational style of the singers voice make this a great album. If you like the samples of the songs at all, you will love the album.

No Cynics Allowed...This Time .......2005-02-02

The title tells a lot of what you need to know about this CD and a glance at the reviews here shows that this Clem Snide is clearly not a taste for everyone. Although it credits plenty of instrumentation, almost every cut on Soft Spot is slow, quiet, and projects a languid contentment, wryly detailed and -- shall we say -- uniquely sung. The sound is perfect for lyric-philes like me (and Eef Barzeley -- a name that suggests to me a double life as a hobbit -- writes a good lyric), not so perfect for those looking for cut loose rock. Happy Birthday, one of only a couple uptempo songs and containing a wonderful saxophone riff, is also one of the album's best cuts. Dedicated to a new son, it offers a nice example of Barzeley's humor -- "but I hope that your song's not The Boys of Summer/just because you were both born on that day/And half Jewish boys make kick ass drummers/But if you need lessons I'll have to pay."

Other best bets: Tuesday October 24th, All Green, There is Nothing, and Fontanelle, with its wish "may God hold you in the palm of his hand." In fact, that good spirited hope pervades the entire disc. There's not a whole lot of "kick ass" anything here, but if you're in a wallow of contentment, Soft Spot will enhance it. And if you're down, well, it just might remind you that darkness passes too.

Flush this floater.......2005-01-20

Be warned: the editorial review's reference to "Eef Barzelay's lovably awkward voice" is thinly-veiled code for: "this guy REALLY can't sing." I'd rather listen to the non-vocal but equally pleasant emanations bouncing 'tween the stained walls of a bus station restroom stall. The music is lifeless, dull, stupifying. Oh, and not very good either.

Be doubly warned: a couple of these tunes are the sort you really don't like but find yourself humming later in the day. You don't want to remember the tune. You can't stand the tune. But it's there, right there in your head. You trying flushing it away, but it only circles the porcelain and manages to float and defy the drain. Must keep flushing...

Good music if you're in a coma.......2004-08-19

I've got to agree with S. Robert from Seattle about this steaming pile of crud. If the sonic garbage on this disk is representative of what's now considered good and worthwhile music, then it may be time for many of us to start looking for the exit. Admit that our days of exploring interesting new music have come to an end and move on to some new hobby. Eef can't sing and the musicians play as though fast asleep. Good music to coma by, perhaps, but certainly nothing here for those with eyes wide open.

Dedicated to experts?.......2007-06-25

Frank Zappa was very proud of this great and difficult work done at the end of his (too short) life.
It requires also great concentation and a capability that probably I don't have to well understand this kind of experimental classic music.
It goes beyond the experimental rock that is typical of many of his works, leading him to the level of great contemporary experimental classic composers.
Given such a level of difficulty I don't know how much I can suggest to buy it. You just should try to hear at this music and decide if it does fit with your soul (how could I believe just a few years ago that today I would like so much 'Your funeral my trial' of Nick Cave?)

Zappa Attempts Stockhausen.......2007-02-13

FZ goes to Germany to upstage Karlheinz and tries an avant garde stage performance which is an elegant and popular form of expression in Germany. The Germans have perfected this type of marriage between romanticism and neoclassicism. In this case it's an overly technical performance, a display. The orchestra all sound good yet Zappa has given the music to another conductor, Peter Rundel. There is no rhythm section and without a background the result is too intellectual.

This CD addresses the more serious, compositional aspect of Frank Zappa's career, and it could not be addressed in a more suitable manner. It includes some of FZ's more difficult works, such as "Bee Bop Tango", "Uncle Meat", and "G-Spot Tornado". The conductor is Peter Rundel, and as Zappa says himself, he is a fine conductor. This is highly recommended for anyone who has already developed a taste for Zappa's complex and imaginative arrangements.

ZAP!.......2006-01-20

Trying to define this album to my good friend was hard. "Well it's Zappa's songs done with an orechestra, but's not really classical sounding . . . it's just Zappa." And my friend just simply nodded and said "Sounds awesome." and i realized that if any reviewer would've just said 'It's Zappa!' it wouldn't take much more to sway me. so - It's Zappa! And it's damn near perfect it's so good! Riveting!!!

Be warned! You may like nobody (musically or real life) or anything (musically or real life) ever again after listening to this album, but it's not that big of a deal!

A Frank Zappa Treasure. Better than many of his CDs.......2005-07-29

`The Yellow Shark', with words and music by Frank Zappa is a collection of `chamber music' pieces recorded in 1993 in Germany, performed by a German orchestra, `Ensemble Modern', which, I believe, commissioned Herr Zappa to assemble these pieces for their concerts. In the accompanying booklet, Frank is pictured with a baton in hand, but the credits only have him conducting three pieces, those with a very significant spoken word aspect (all spoken in English). He also makes a brief appearance at the beginning of the CD where he introduces the Ensemble Modern conductor, Peter Rundel.

This recording is probably one of the very last to be done by Zappa himself, before his unexpected death due to illness. Of all the musical figures of the 1960s lost to us over the years, I miss Zappa almost as much as I miss John Lennon, and I am very happy that if we had to lose them, it was not to drugs or any other kind of self abuse.

There are fourteen musical pieces and three `spoken word' pieces on the recording. I confess that the spoken word pieces may actually be a bit dated, especially the `Welcome to the United States' track on a questionnaire for immigrants which makes a reference to terrorism which may seem entirely too glib in our current environment.

Two of the earliest tracks `Dog Breath Variations' and `Uncle Meat' are instantly recognizable from their music and titles as `quotes' from earlier albums, with very little `classical' varnish over their strongly jazzy sound. Most of the other musical pieces have more subtle quotes from earlier Zappa works, and demonstrate influences from George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, the movie music from `Spartacus', and his old mentor, Edgar Varese.

I noticed that the applause on these tracks was louder than the music and I was wondering whether the audience was appreciating the music itself or the presence of that formidable 1960's icon, Frank Zappa. I'm sure it was a little bit of both, but Zappa and audience couldn't resist quoting from one of his best albums, `The Mothers Fillmore East - June 1971'.

I think this quote was entirely appropriate, in that we owe so much musical innovation to the popular musical performers who were nutured by 1960's, producing such wonders as Zappa and the great bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Who, who are still scoring our artistic perceptions on both commercials and dramatic themes on TV.

This may not be Zappa's greatest album, but it is one of his cleanest. Like `Hot Rats', there is very little `throw away' material. And, it is one of the very few pop or classical recordings by a major musical figure where you will hear the performance of a didgeridoo (Australian aborigonal flute).

Highly recommended for Zappa fans and fans of 1960s music in general.
