"Yeah, you gets PROPS over HERE!".......2007-07-25
After releasing their EP Intoxicated Demons in 1993, the Beatnuts' debut full length "Street Level" arrived at the height of east coast hip hop's golden era, 1994. While this album isn't spectacular as a piece of hip hop in its own right, "Street Level" works as a very consistent piece that mostly reflects what a great time 1994 was for hip hop. At this time, creative and appealing production was valued highly, and raw lyrics that stayed true to hip hop were embraced by a wider audience. "Street Level" is a product of all of these factors, and it's really a very fun album. While JuJu, Les, and Fashion aren't great rappers, they're tons of fun to listen to, again reflecting the best styles of the era. They rap about drugs, women, partying, and the classic boom-bap type of toasts. There's hooks ripe with yelling and chants, and lyrically it's fun without being deep. But the true draw for any Beatnuts album is obviously the production. The beats on this album are somewhere between Cypress Hill's claustrophobic funk and The Artifacts' upbeat old school style. The beats are quite simple, but they are clever and very appealing. Usually anchored by a nice bassline and some light instrumentals, they have a light, easy, and laidback feel for the most part. The album relies on consistency, no songs stand out and none would really be too memorable on their own, but as an album it's extremely fluid. The songs all sound fairly similar, and they flow seamlessly from one into the next. You can just put this album in the player and let it roll, without ever wanting to skip a track. Overall, "Street Level" is a really fun party album from a very underappreciated group.
Following the intro, the album begins with "Ya Don't Stop," a winding and solid opener. "Props Over Here" is the first great song, with a great laidback and catchy beat and nice hook. "Hellraiser" is also really nice, with a beat built around a cool keyboard line and the chorus here is awesome. After the appealingly uneasy Grand Puba collabo "Are You Ready" is the excellent "Superbad," both a musical and lyrical highlight. "Straight Jacket" is upbeat and vibesy, and it is followed by the short "Let Off a Couple." I really like this song, this track is only a minute and a half long, but at the end the full version is curiously included as a bonus track. "Rik's Joint" is a very smooth head-nodder, with some nice female vocals on the hook. The loopy "Fried Chicken" and okay "Yeah You Get Props," which is very similar to "Props Over Here," precede the nicely produced "Get Funky." "Hit Me With That" is another solid late-album track, as is "2-3 Break," which has multiple nice beats on it. I love the production on "Lick the P...," a laidback, slow-rolling sex song. The brief "Sandwiches" and funny, entertaining "Psycho Dwarf" close the tracklist.
Being the incredible year that 1994 was for hip hop, the Beatnuts' debut LP went a little under the radar, but it has definitely stood the test of time and remains a great album thirteen years later. This album is the kind of fun, light, and laidback hip hop that's perfect for the car or just chilling to. Fans of this early-90s east coast sound should definitely make this purchase. The Beatnuts have a huge discography that includes numerous quality and underrated albums, and this is certainly among the best, I would recommend it as a starting point for new Beatnuts listeners. I highly recommend "Street Level."
These guys were my heroes.......2006-09-03
This is a perfect example of underground movie from Hip Hop's Golden Age; a timeless classic.
Their Best Work.......2006-08-14
1st off if you've been sleepin on these cats its time to wake up. Every track on the CD is dope, no filler. Their lyrics are on point and every beat is fresh. If you're new to them this is a great place to start. A++++
BEATNUTS PARA TODOS, EVERYONE!!.......2005-10-03
The second album from this triple threat group is in one word genius. Not straying from their formula this album carry's on from where the first one left off, the usual sample looping still apply's here Psycho les and ju ju demonstrating yet again their passion for crate digging while keeping it straight up funky on the rhyming tip. Fashion returns again carrying the dope rhyme skills, It is a shame that he left the group after this but he left on a high.
Standout tracks for me are hellraiser superbad and get funky, all these tracks carry classic beatnut sounds. Released in 94 if you have any knowledge of mid ninties hip hop you will have a good idea of what to expect but if you don't, expect dark gritty dusty beats the classic new york hip hop, buy it.

Customer Reviews:
Khujo Delivers from the old Goodie feel.......2002-12-13
Khujo's solo debut of the Man Not the Dawg continues in the same tradition of that Goodie Mob sound that we all learned to love. Khujo starts off with a dark intro, that drives the point, over a electronic/techno down south beat, that combines that cadillac ride-out sound with new-age computer technology. Khujo has a whole host of producer's that check in on the album. One major highlight is when the rest of the Goodie Fam, and guest star, Murder, checks in over a Frank Nitty Beat...entitled - How We Ride in the South. This track serves as a definite need for these brothers to collectively come back and serve the places that they have left standing. Whether its back as Goodie or the original Lumbah Jax, its all good, these brothers still represent the south to the fullest. Khujo does an extremely good job in serving his message to the masses in his normal disciple style, and still brings that rough edge vocal style that we all have learned to love. This is a nice classic to add to your collection......Enjoy!!!!

Product Description
Barefoot Servants is a collective of four friends that have individually played on hundreds of records over the years. Featuring Jon Butcher (Jon Butcher Axis & solo recordings) on guitar and lead vocals, multi-instrumentalist Ben Schultz (Rod Stewart), premier studio and touring veteran bassist Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, James Taylor) and drummer Neal Wilkinson (Artie Traum), Barefoot Servants 2 is the completion of an idea that surfaced 18 months ago a follow-up to their 1994 self-titled CD. Although the bands 94 CD had a decidedly bluesier identity, Ben Schultz calls the new CD, The one we probably should have made then and finally made now. The new disc is definitely more a product of all the music the four of us have loved and been a part of all of our lives. Barefoot Servants 2 is full of inspired playing, accessible songs, honest stories, and street-level portraits by musicians with a great deal of personal experience. As Leland Sklar stated, Weve been around and been part of a lot of music history. With Barefoot Servants 2 we accomplished all our personal goals to make a really honest record that we all believed in and can be proud of. Thats saying a lot considering some of the records weve played on.
Customer Reviews:
Finally something to get excited about in ROCK!.......2006-03-21
Well it's about time somebody released a note worthy CD. The problem is you can't buy it from the local stores. I think this is a great CD, not too often do I enjoy every song on a disc but this one is that way. Lee Sklar does an excellent job of working the bottom end and compliments Jon Butcher and Ben Schultz guitar work. I recomend this CD to anybody that is looking for some good rock. I just hope I can purchase the bands first CD!!!!
One Man's Opinion.......2005-09-07
Barefoot Servants 2
Jon Butcher
Ben Schultz
Leland Sklar
Neal Wilkerson
Eagerly anticipated, this album, two years in the making, is a thing of sonic beauty. Expertly produced and recorded, it is truly one of Jon Butcher's career highlights.
Initial surprise, the tracks are more acoustically based than electric, and an ample amount of Jon's harmonica work spices several of the tracks.
Ben Schultz is the perfect compliment to Jon. His musicianship is outstanding, trading licks with Jon and singing wonderfully throughout. Quite different, in a good way, from Barefoot's 1994 debut album.
No surprise that Leland Sklar lays down magnificent bass lines throughout the disc, proving once again that Lee is one of the world's best bass players.
Neil Wilkerson's crisp, solid drumming provides a consistent backbeat that Jon hasn't had since working with Derek Blevins in Jon Butcher Axis.
Transport to today, new technologies, sophistication, life's lessons learned, an artist, who cares, grows. And still tells great stories with his lyrics. That's Jon. On with the show...
Tracks
1. Pharaoh's House: Remember The Rolling Stones? This is the best track they never recorded. Kicks the album off like the old JBA and Johanna Wild used to do.
2. I Don't Care At All: Mostly acoustic, Jon vocals and sweet harmonica. Dylanesk. 12 string in there? Hmmm?
3. Crazy: Jon up front, in your face acoustic...must be the Taylor guitar sounds so sweet and forward...slide guitar from Ben makes the tune.
4. When The Day Comes: Huge rocker with props to John Lennon and Beatles. Jon grew up a big Fab Four fan..Neil kicks the drums...Beatles "on edge."
5. Rude Boy: An "in your face" rocker, my pick for a video. A "hit!" Jon just like we all remember him, harmonica is great...reminds me of Stones and Clash, but this is PURE JB.
6. Take My Breath Away: Neil's backbeat, "you can't lose it!" Leland, power, clean bass lines. Funky to the point one might think Reggae influence.
7. Bells of Saint Mary's: Spellbinding tune, great story. Acoustic foundation. Jon and Ben work great together on this one. A "live in concert" showstopper.
8. Brown Penny: A classic from Jon, ala Rod Stewart's Maggie May. You can hear "the smile" in Jon's voice in this tune. Jon, always the storyteller.
9. Monsters in Bethlehem: Mostly acoustic, Jon being basic with a feeling within.
10. Crack The Sky: Had to be one Jimi redux. A blockbuster song. The Stratocaster sounds so sweet. Drums flash back to Derek Blevins. Funny how so many people used to compare Jon to Jimi. This is not a Jimi song, it sounds just like Jon Butcher!
11. Love You Too Much: Great drums! Perfect for VH1. Reminds of Jon Butcher Axis days.
12. Dog Days: Power riffs. Jon attacks the strat. Lee blows your speakers up with a great bass line. Maybe a little Jimi or Jeff Beck lurking in there.
13. Phases of The Moon: A perfect sonic end to an imaginative album of music from four true professionals.
This new work from Jon is well worth the wait. Given the appropriate attention from national media and publications, this will put Jon "on the map" where he belongs. A great singer, songwriter, storyteller and, he plays a pretty good guitar now and then. (heh-heh)
Overall recommendation...buy it now and get a couple for your friends.
Barefoot Servants 2 Shows What Real Musicians Do With Their Talents .......2005-08-22
The new CD out by Barefoot Servants 2 display's what real true musicians create. REAL MUSIC! Not some corporate supported bubble gum music, but strong works of music how music should be played. From the rockin' first song "Pharaoh's House" to the toe tappin "Take My Breath Away", there is truly not a bad song on the CD. If this CD were recorded back in the 70's, (that's were the song "Brown Penny" takes me) it would be heard on every radio station across the country. That's not to say this sounds like old music, but has a little bit of the Faces, Stones, Hendrix and a lot of Jon Butcher the master crafter. You can hear it in his voice on the CD, that Jon and the band had a great time playing these song's. Rightly so, because they should be proud of their work here. Nothing this fresh has been out in a long time. Me, I expected nothing less! If your a music fan of any of the Barefoot Servants you probably have this one already, if your not, do yourself a favor and get it. You will not be disappointed.
