3 out of 5 stars MACK 10 still bring game.......2006-08-10

This album is a must for mack 10 fans and westside connection fans, Though if you are first time buyer to mack 10 i would suggest The recipe or Based on a true story, because those are his best albums, this album is nice though. not classic but a solid album for any westcoast fan

4 out of 5 stars Yo, my Danny K blowin' homie Mack Dime gets a 4.5 for this solo!.......2006-02-04

Its been four years since his last real solo (I'm not counting "Da Hood" or "Ghetto Gutter Gangsta" as solo's since a ton of guests are on them and Mack isn't on all the songs on those) Mack Dime comes back pretty tight. Of the 15 songs on here, about half are good and half are ok, no bad ones. Guests rap on 8 songs and do the hook on a few others so once again as with most of his albums, guests are all over the place. Production is decent, but not really that good for one of his albums as usually he has real good production. Ron Feemster, Fredwreck, Midi Mafia, DL, and J Classic all do 2 songs, and a 5 people (most I never heard of) each do 1 song. A good album for fans of The Chicken Hawk to have but not his best, Like This featuring Nate Dogg is the * song on the album, yet that MTV refuses to air on the radio, an ING classic The Testimony featuring Young Soprano is about Mack Dime explaining everyday struggles, Step Yo Game Up featuring B-Real & DJ is an awsome song with mi homie B-Rizzie & DJ, and My Chucks is a strong hit by Dime, about chucks & converse shoes, decent album.

Mr. Dime's best puffs are songs *1(featuring Nate Dogg), 2, 3(featuring Red Cafe, Skoop Delania & Young Soprano), 4(featuring Young Soprano), *6(featuring Young Soprano), *7(featuring B-Real & DJ), 8(featuring Butch Cassidy), 9(featuring Ruka Puff & Bigga Brown), *10, 12(featuring Butch Cassidy & Young Soprano) & 15.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2006-01-06

After waiting so long for a new Mack 10 album, I figured it'd be somethin' incredible seeing as how long it took. Things just do not always get better with age. There are only a few stand-out tracks here. Most of it is a dime a dozen. The production isn't too bad, really laid-back type stuff. The lyrics are pretty dull however. Save your money for tha next WSC album.

5 out of 5 stars Gatt Attack.......2005-10-03

Mack 10 pullin himself out on this one blastin the competition away with his Bangin' WESTSIDE Lyrics. This is by far the BEST of the Mack 10 albums, i cant go too much really into detail of it cos i havnt got the time. But beleive me this albums a freekin CLASSIC. Mack 10 is excellent by himself and awsum collaborating with others too, next to Ice Cube hes the best in 'Westside Connection' i think hes pretty on par wit him or even better than.
This album is very much granting a 5 star rating!

Go buy it like i did, u WILL NOT be dissapointed my good friends.

5 out of 5 stars mack 10 the chicken hawk.......2004-07-25

this album is classic everyone has heard the hits westside slaughterhouse and foe life, but in my opinion, chicken hawk was the best song and guests include wc ice cube and k dee, there is no reason not to pick this up

5 out of 5 stars Mack 10 Has Created A Masterpeice...........2004-07-24

Mabey even the greatest album of all time. Being Mack 10's number one fan in he world, every CD Mack 10 has put out I loved. But this one was without a doubt his best made album. Not alot of guests (only K-Dee, Ice Cube & WC) which I liked, and only had to skits (Willie D's Lick, Pigeon Coup). Not a song on this album isn't worth listening to, which makes it a 5 out of 5 star album. Most known for hits "Foe Life" and "Westside Slaugherhouse" which in my opinion do make this cd good, but I think that the best song on this whole album was "Chicken Hawk". Everything about that song is great, but the beats and the chorus in particular. It wasn't a hit when it came out, and I really can't see why. Though it doesn't say on the tracklist, but you can hear Ice Cube's voice in alot of songs on this album, like I think Iheard it on "Wanted Dead" a great song about Mack 10 being a wanted man, and you can hear Ice Cube's voice in the intro to the album, "Willie D's Lick". With alot of hardcore/gangsta songs on the album, he raps a bit more light on "Mozi-Wozi". Which is one of my favorite songs on the album, mostly because I love the awesome beats on it. It has pretty nice lyrics, so it is for sure one of my top five favorite songs from the album. After that, to end the album, you hear a very hardcore song titled "Mack 10's the Name" which is a very good song, I would give it 5 stars, though it is very close to getting 4.5 stars. It's not one of the better tracks on the album. Other songs I could almost give a 4.5 star is "Niggas Dog Scrapping", "Here Comes The G" and "Armed & Dangerous" though every other song on the album is for sure a 5 star. Here is every song on the album, listed from best to least, not including Willie D's Lick (Intro) and Pigeon Coup (Skit):
6) Chicken Hawk
13) Mozi-Wozi
2) Foe Life
8) Westside Slaughterhouse
3) Wanted Dead
14) Mack 10's the Name
11) H-O-E-K
7) Here Comes The G
4) On Them Thangs
12) 10 Million Ways
9) Niggas Dog Scrapping
10) Armed & Dangerous
This album is a classic, a must have. And without it no music collection could be good.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Album!.......2004-07-08

This is probably one of the best albums in the world. Any album that has "Foe Life" makes it a must-have album. Next to "foe Life" the best songs are Westside Slaughterhouse, and Wanted Dead. There is NO reason not to pick up this album, I suggest it to all gangsta/Westcoast rap fans.

Cooking up all sorts of gangsta grooves and other rap goodies, Mack 10 offers up The Recipe. Without taking this food metaphor too far, The Recipe is rather like a buffet--Mack 10 works with different artists and producers on practically every song and, as a result, the quality can be uneven. Musically, there are few surprises on the album, though Mack 10's gangsta-izing of the familiar "Heartbeat" sample for his duet with Snoop Dogg on "LBC and the ING" is flavorful enough, as is the sugar-sweet pop of "You Ain't Seen Nothin'" (which features Jermaine Dupri and Foxy Brown). Despite cameos by Big Pun and Fat Joe, this is still an album made for those yelling, "Westside till I die!" The Recipe neither embarrasses nor elevates the reality-rap world. --Oliver Wang

2 out of 5 stars Mack 10's Recipe For An Average Album (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-05-15

Mack 10's third album "The Recipe" is nothing special for this reviewer. On this album I find Mack 10's gangsta style lyrics to become repetitive and brings nothing new with this album, not to mention a guest appearance on almost every track. A lot of this album has a lot of skip that flows throughout. The first song that stood out was "Money Just A Touch Away" featuring Gerald Levart (R.I.P.), as he rhymes about him comming up in the rap game. Another dope track would be "Ghetto Horror Show" with Ice Cube and Jayo Felony. Mack 10 teams up with Snoop Dogg over an old school beat for the song "Long Beach & Inglewood". Mack 10 teams up with a lot of guests. Many East Coast and Down South, as well as some West Coast rappers who hit (Big Pun, Buckshot Shorty, ODB, MC Eiht), and some who miss (Jermaine Dupri, Foxy Brown, Master P, CJ Mac (sorry I can't stand him)). That can really cause an imbalance on the album and have some filler tracks like "Made ******" and "You Ain't Seen ****". Mack 10 closes the album with him addressing the critics on "The Letter", followed by a rock sounding track "Should I Stay, Or Should I Go" featuring Korn and Ice Cube. I enjoy Mack 10, but personally believe that he lacks charisma of carring an album by himself, and find it better when he is either rhyming in a group (Westside Connection), or being a guest on someone else's album (which might explain the high amount of tracks that feature guests). This album has your average dated topics and common material that might have sounded good back in 1998, but years later is dated. There are a few tracks here and there, but not enough to keep the album togeher. I find that this album is more suited for east coast listeners than it is for west. I understand the unity that was going on back then due to the circumstances of recent events, but this album pulls too far from it's west coast sound that makes the music sound the way it should. Unless you're a hardcore fan of Mack 10, I recommend that you find this album at a used price. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Good 3rd solo.......2005-03-04

Mack 10's 3rd solo album is pretty good. Out of the 14 songs, there is only 1 with no guests, and it's the 2nd best one on here (one song has a guest doing the hook). The guestare from his Hoo Bangin camp, other Cali rapper, some from down south, and a few more from the east. Production is pretty good and done by 7 people. Young Trey does 3, Binky Mack, Slice & Rhythm D, DJ Uneek, and Dutch all do 2 songs, and Payback & KLC each do 1 song. It has 1 classic, 1 near classic, 2 that I skip, 2 that are ok, and the other 8 are good. As usual the main concept is gangsta themes, hustling, and a dirty sdong or 2. A good album to have for Mack 10 fans and west coast fans alike.

4 out of 5 stars 3 great songs make this album okay.......2004-01-04

Mack 10 is a good rapper, but he is definitely a poser. I'm sure he hustled when he was still living in Inglewood, but that doesn't make him special. There are three really good songs on this album. The first is "Ghetto Horror Show," on which Mack 10, Jayo Felony, and Ice Cube compare street life to a horror movie. Cube kills Mack on this track, though, as he does on the album's second good song "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" This track is very unique for Mack 10 because it is a cover of the Clash's punk rock classic, and it features Korn. Still, "The Letter" is the greatest song Mack has ever written. This is the only song on the entire album with no guest lyricists, and Mack actually sounds like he's passionate about the topic instead of just trying to be cool. The album's cover is brilliant, but the album itself doesn't display very much genius.

5 out of 5 stars Westsiiiide!!!!!!.......2001-12-04

This Mack 10 album is a must have. The beats is some of the best I've heard, and of course Mack 10 makes them gangsta songs which is the best. It's so many appearances on here I'm not even gonna try to name any.(...)even some of them eastcoast rappers was fittin in good on there songs cause I don't even like eastcoast rap like dat. It's so many tight songs on here,so the people that always have a favorite song can't even pick one on this joint. The only and only song Mack 10 didn't need on here is that song wit Jd and Foxy Brown. But it's still all good and if you don't got this album go get this joint and his other albums to for real.If you wanna convince someone who don't like Mack 10 like that, just play "Gangsta (...) like A Drug" ,like I said I don't have a favorite song on here but that song just haves that flavor that can make anybody like it.So go get this joint right now......Go!

Dont think that I hate Mack 10. His first self-titled album and Based On A True Story were undeniably west coast classics but if any album was the tip off to this stink bomb of album it would have to be The Recipe. For starters Mack 10 doesnt sound as hungry as he did on his previous albums, the production is just as weak and Techniec is on five tracks in the album and everybody knows that he sounded better on Game's mixtapes then he does on here. The Good: From tha Streetz was a good first single to kick off the album with, I'm Dope was hard and Pimp Or Die(featuring Techniec and Too Short) is also a highlight. Sorry to say but these are the only tracks that stick out. The Bad: Tight To Def featuring his former wife and TLC member T-Boz was a tepid second single and why he chose it to be his next single is anyone's guess. For Sale which features YoungBloodz and Big Gipp is deader than disco and that has to be the worst verse of Big Gipp's rap career. Hustle Game and Keep It Gangsta will knock you out like elephant tranquilizer(yes they are that boring). The Ugly: Nobody featuring Westside Connection is the worst song on here and that has to be the worst beat that Timbaland has ever produced next to Diddy Rock! Spousal Abuse is so corny you'll break out into hysterics, Pop X is hot rubbish and everybody on the track(with the exception of Xzibit) had some lame verses and Tha Weekend is just as awful but I must say that the positive thing about that track is that its the last song. Bottom Line: Its unanimously agreed that The Paper Route is Mack 10's worst album. You can tell a rush job when you hear it and this album was an obvious rush job. In comparison to Mack 10 and Based On A True Story, Paper Route is extremely pale in comparison and will be forgotten like Bang Or Ball.

4 out of 5 stars 4th solo is another good one.......2005-03-04

Mack 10 is back for his 4th solo album, just shy of 2 years after he released "The Recipe" and I like this one a little bit more. Like with all his albums since "The Recipe" guests are all over the album. Only 11 songs, 2 of which are solo's (2 the guests only do the hook). Production is good and done by 9 different people. As usual he talks about hustlin, gangsta $hi+ and his dirty songs. Caviar and Rashad Coes each do 2 songs, and timbaland, beat ballers, young trey, rick rock, mark twayne, leslie braithwait, and easy mo bee each do 1 song. It has 1 classic, 1 or 2 that are ok (1 I skip sometimes), and the rest are good. A good album to have for Mack Dime fans.

#2 - 8.5 (f/ monty noble -- tight beat)
#3 - 8 (f/ ice cube, wc, and timbaland)
#5 - 10 (Classic song talking about dope using metaphors)
#6 - 9 (dirty song w/ good beat -- f/ too $hort, techniec)
#7 - 6.5 (f/ t-boz -- good beat but better w/o her on it)
#8 - 9 (tight beat -- f/ techniec, xzibit, caviar, pinky, skoop delania)
#9 - 8.5 (f/ jazze pha)
#10 - 8.5 (about the hustle game)
#11 - 8 (f/ techniec, kokane -- about spousal abuse)
#12 - 7 (f/ youngbloodz, techniec, and big gipp of Goodie Mobb)
#13 - 8 (f/ techniec, ice cube)

5 out of 5 stars Still tight.......2001-12-04

This joint ain't Mack 10's best album, but it's still worth buying.Like always Mack put's the real on records and the beats is really what disappointed some. For the majority of the beats on here they're ok thoy.On this one it features Ice Cube, WC,Young Bloodz, his wife T-Boz,Timbaland,Xzibit,Kokane and others. This is still a good album,it just ain't got that gangsta, gangsta feel to it like his other albums.Regardless to that Mack 10 still made a tight album and I'm glad I bought it.

3 out of 5 stars He's done better--let's hope this isn't a falling-off point.......2001-08-15

Hmmm..."From The Streetz" hits hard, "Hustle Game" features GREAT production work by EASY MO BEE, "Tha Weekend" has a pretty cool hook from ICE CUBE, "Pop X" has a nice, underground-ish, ALKAHOLICS-type sound (not to mention a great XZIBIT cameo)and "I'm Dope" is a fun drug metaphor song (dope horns, too--pun intended! Ha ha ha!). Unfortunately, the rest of this seems rushed and just doesn't have enough juice. It seems like he tried to reach too many markets. "Tight To Def" shows that R&B isn't the Chicken Hawk's thing. The southern collaboration ("For Sale" with THE YOUNGBLOODZ and BIG GIPP) just doesn't do it for me, either. "Keep it Gangsta" is underdeveloped and too simplistic, and the beats on "Spousal Abuse" (interesting topic, though), "Nobody" and "Pimp or Die" rob the lyrics (especially WC's) of their potential impact. Since this album came out, though, MACK 10 has signed with CASH MONEY and admitted in an interview that he had his differences with PRIORITY (on which this CD was released) and that they didn't know how to promote him right. This could explain the slapdash quality here. My advice? If you're a MACK 10 fan, buy it, but if you're a novice who wants to get to know MACK 10, buy his first CD (1995's "MACK 10") and THE WESTSIDE CONNECTION'S "Bow Down" CD instead. WHY do once-cool musicians always let the money change them? As BILL COSBY once said: "there's no guarantee for success. But the guaranteed way to fail is to try to please everybody." Think about it.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2001-07-22

First off what is garbage? Something you use for about two hours and then toss it in the trash can. So is there a difference between garbage and trash. Yes..............trash lasts longer before you toss it in the can. Good thing Common exposed this [....] But hey, at least he has one good thing going for him by snatching up the sexy T-Boz from TLC but that is ALL hehas going for him. Put it like this .....A three year old could make a better album. Stay Away...............Far Away.

This album is hot and Im glad it was cause with mack 10's sick gangsta flows and cash moneys hot producing team in particular mannie fresh you should hope that they can produce a good album together, I think suprisingly that cash moneys style of music suits mack just as good as Ice cube and wc styles in west side connection. Other then featuring all the usual cash money suspects, it also features big name artists such as ice cube, xzibit, scarface, WC and Butch Cassidy and it also has a song produced by dr dre which is a very creative rip off of the bee gees song "staying alive" (I know it sounds gay but trust me its not, its a disco song made gangsta), some of my favourite songs on this are
-Hate in yo eyes
-Let the thugs in the club
-work
-no dick at all

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star 5th solo --- first on Cash Money Records.......2005-03-02

15 months after he released "Paper Route" Mack is back, on Cash Money. When Mack 10 signed to Cash Money after owning his own label, I thought what the #&*% is going on. I did not get the album for about 3 years because I don't really like much of Cash Money's stuff, but when I got it and listened it turned out to be my favorite album of Mack's I have (I don't have his first 2 albums) just slightly better then "Da Hood" and "Paper Route". His lyrics are the same, about hustling, gangsta $h!+, and some dirty songs. There is 14 songs, of which Manny Fresh produced (and very well) 11 of them, the other 3 were by Ron, Dr. Dre, and QD3. There is 1 near classic, 3 ok songs, 1 that I skip, and the rest are very good songs. Guests are plentiful (like his "Recipe", "Da Hood" and Ghetto Gutter and Gangsta" albums), on 10 of the 14 songs, and the whole Cash money roster is on here, as well as some others. A must have album for Mack Dime fans.

5 out of 5 stars Mack 10 is back.......2002-04-05

Mack 10 and Cash Money are the perfect combination. Stand out tracks are "Hate in Yo Eyes", "B**** you Bad", "No D***", and "Connected". Mannie Fresh supplies the hot beats and Mack Dime holds it down along with BG, Wayne, Turk, Big Tymers, XZIBIT, E-40, Butch Cassidy, Ice Cube, and WC. Buy this--NOW.

1 out of 5 stars Mack 10 in full on sell out mode!.......2002-03-22

This is Mack 10 (and probably Rap) is his worst! I think this album makes it quite obvious that he needs Ice Cube as a mentor. There is one outstanding track on the album 'hate in yo eyes', I can't say i'm surprised he sees hate in peoples eyes if he subjects them to this kind of rap.
Filled with fillers and guest appearances from utter nobodies (apart from Cube and WC on track 5) this album was a huge let down for me. I've enjoyed all of Mack 10's albums even the paper route, but this album has nothing to really get your teeth into and bounce along to like 'Foe Life' or 'From tha Streetz'. Cash Money have done Mack an injustice on this one and proves he didn't make the right choice in moving to the label last year.
All in all I think this album will be a great disappointment to any Dedrick Rollinson fan out there, and I think it might lose any fans he has left, I know I'll be thinking twice about buying his next album if he ever brings another one out!

3 out of 5 stars maybe 3.5 stars of an album which Mack is on half the songs.......2005-03-08

Mack 10 is back after 1 year with another album showcasing other people a lot more then him (he is on only 8 or 9 of the 18 songs on here. Production is pretty good but the guests on most of the songs are below average rappers. Production is handled by Young Trey mostly, (13 songs), with Damizza doing 2, and King Tech, Drop E, E. Lamore each doing 1 song. It has no classic, 8 good songs, 6 ok songs, and 4 that I skip. I wouldn't recommend this album unless you are a die hard Mack fan, and he isn't even on half the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive from Mack 10.......2004-07-21

This is probably Mack 10's best albums since his debut album. There is NO reason not to pick up this album, especially if you are a fan of the classic gangsta/Westcoast.

4 out of 5 stars Mack 10's Latest Album.......2004-07-09

I see that Mack 10 has changed alot since 1995 (That's not a good thing) Though it does have a few good songs like Lights Out, but it is for sure not like the old Mack 10. If you want Mack's best work, then pick up Mack 10, Recipe, or Based On A True Story. But if you already own the rest of his albums, then this would be good to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable,.......2004-06-25

The first play is good. It's hard and dangerous and exceptionally well produced. Then it gets even better. Poetic, beautiful at times. I'm serious. Mack 10 has worked with and learned from the best in the game and it shows. He has complied an incredible mix of talent, notably K-Mac - clearly groomed to be a superstar. The sound is pure L.A. street; no matter where you're from, you can see the swaying palms and smell the gunpowder in the salty Inglewood breeze. Phenomenal record, top to bottom.

5 out of 5 stars Mack 10's best album to date.......2005-11-30

After hos solid self-titled debut album and the huge success of Westside Connection's "Bow Down" , it was the perfect timing for Mack 10 to release his second album. "Based on a True Story" continues what Bow Down had started - GREAT beats with nothing but West Coast gangsta rap on it. Although Mack 10 lacks Ice Cube and WC's carisma or lyrical abilities, he's still a talented rapper, with a unique voice and high street cred. "Based on a true story" is much beter than his debut, with much much better production and rapping. On this album, Mack 10 sounds the best he's ever sounded - nowdays his rapping is a bit to laid back, lacking emotion - but on this one, Mack One O raps with energy, sounding real hard on quite a few. Lyrically it's all about the streets on this one, drug dealing, killing, hustlin'. No sex songs, no cars songs, just gangsta sh** to the fullest. The production is very impressive. Ant Banks did 4 songs (some of the best are his), Young Tre, Soopafly, Bob Cat, Mack 10 and Ice Cube did the rest. It's West Coast rap at it's highest form and I feel it's a great follow-up to "Bow Down". Guest rappers are AllFrumThaI, Comrads, Ice Cube (on 2 songs and all over the album as well), Snoop Dogg (you can hardly hear his voice on that song, he almost whispers his verse)...I only wish WC was on it too, but it's all good... There's no attempt to go mainstream on this album: It was recorded when West Coast rap was at it's peak, in terms of quality and popularity, so rappers could go on and do their thing without fearing the album won't sell. You won't skip a track on this one, I give you my word, Mack 10's second album is his best solo release ever. Nothing he did after that can match "Based on a true story".

5 out of 5 stars Mack-10-A Westcoast Classic.......2004-02-15

this album is mack 10 at his best.thys album is a banger from start 2 finish and tha outro song based on a true story seals tha greatness of thys album and takes it 2 classic westcoast status.PERFECTION AT ITS PEAK

4 out of 5 stars Like it.......2003-12-17

I like this CD by Mack 10. I cant say its his best, thats why I gave it a 4, but I still find myself bumbing this cd in my truck quite often. Backyard boogie has a tight beat, and the chicken hawk 2 is also a great hit. If you like Mack then grab this cd. Mack still keepin it GaNgStA!

4 out of 5 stars WESTSIDE ONLY IN KALI !.......2000-11-06

MACK 10 DID GOOD IN THIS ALBUM.ONLY IN KALI.

4 out of 5 stars A little more laid back on this album........2000-06-01

With this album, Mack 10 starts to mature as a rapper. His lyrics are less "in your face" most of the time and a little more introspective. The last track on the album, BASED ON A TRUE STORY, is most reflective of this. BACKYARD BOOGIE is a bumpin' party track, INGLEWOOD SWANGIN' is a salute to his hometown, and THE GUPPIES is a mafia type gangsta tale.

The production on this album is very good...tight beats and slick interpolation. Mack's lyrics have matured and have acquired a unique flow. Overall, this is a very well rounded album. A definite gem in the rap game.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2005-11-18

VARIOUS ARTISTS
THE SUBSTITUTE SOUNDTRACK

I seen this album for 5 dollars at a cd store in town and happened to notice out of the corner of my eye that it had LIL ½ DEAD on it. And upon further inspection I noticed it also had tracks from MACK 10, RAS KASS, THA ROAD DAWGS, & ALLFRUMTHAI. So u know I had to get it, I mean come on wouldn't u with that line up. The only draw back from just looking at it is that it only had 11 tracks.

1.HOO BANGIN'-the first track comes out bumpin with a thumpin beat from ICE CUBE, who is also on the track as a cameo. But the star on this one is the great MACK 10, who of course kills it. His rough flow along with the bass driven beat makes this the perfect choice for a single if the cd had one. This really sounds like it should have been on his classic "FO LIFE" album. Every one out there should get this track some how, it is a great song.5/5

2.LICORICE STIKS-this track follows the example the first one laid down, a hot beat with nice lyrics from the artist. This time it's INTENSE METHOD that holds it down this time, tearing the track. And the beat is by RYTHEM D who crafted an excellent instrumental made for night time cruising. Over all this is a pretty nice track, it gets play in my ride.4/5

3.DANGER-Mack 10 returns to help out in the track, but it's the ROAD DAWGS and ALLFRUMTHAI that control this song. Each member of the groups come hard with their verses, especially with the hook. BINKY comes with the beat on this one, to be honest with you I really don't bump this track as much. But to its credit it definitely has that hardcore west coast feel to it, which makes a pretty good track. For some reason it reminds me of "MURDER WAS THE CASE".4/5

4.MIAMI LIFE-finally I get to the RAS KASS track, which I already had once owned before my "SOUL ON ICE" album got stolen. So it was good to hear this track again, I always had a soft spot for this track. the unique beat from FLIP and Kass always seemed tight to me, in fact the production on that album was not as bad as most people say. And you all know that lyrically this track is nice, Ras always comes correct with that. So over all this is an excellent track.4.8/5

5.BRING IT ON-now this catchy yet eerie sounding track comes hard with ORGANIZED KONFUSION in front of and behind the boards. To be honest this is a fav of mine off of the album, the beat is well paced and the lyrics are off the hook. Also the flows from the artists on this track are mad original, or at least for that time period. Over all this is a nice track, worth checking out.4.3/5

6.BANG'EM UP-oh my goodness is that a NO LIMET track from when they were just starting to blow up, I think it is. This is back when almost every thing they dropped was original and a sure fire hit. And that is also very true for this track from TRU [consists of MASTER P, SILK THA SHOCKER, and C MURDER]. The track also features former tank member MR SERV-ON. And to be honest they all come correct, including P. This is when they were real hungry, and egger to get heard. The beat from KLC is very west coast oriented, and the perfect backdrop for these N.O. Soilders.4/5

7.HEAD UP-another west coast track for all of you out there to chill to. This track comes from the YOUNG MURDER SQUAD, and SH' KILLA. Each one of them comes out tight on this one, this one takes me back. The beat from PRODEJE and TAMIE MUNDY is off the hook, it reminds me of the wests hey day in the early 90's {of course this did come out in 96}.4.5/5

8.I GOT THAT CREAM-Master P returns with another west coast influenced track, courtesy of MO B. DICK with his nice production. Of course this was when P was known as the ice cream man, and this was when they first started getting big. This track like the first N.O. track is tight and worth you checking it out. This track is smoother than the last track, and sounds tight in the ride.4/5

9.HOOD LIFE-ah yes the song I bought the album for, LIL ½ DEAD is in the house ya'll. Of course this track didn't disappoint at all, and like I figured is my favorite track on the cd. If the Mack 10 song wasn't the single, this should have been. H.D. drops heat on this track, and makes wish he would drop another album. Also the beat from TRACY S. KENDRICK, COURTNEY BRANCH, & K PHIX is off the chain, although to some it might sound familiar to another west coast hit, see for your self. This is definitely the best song on the album.5/5

10.MONEY, POWER, & WOMEN-this is definitely a highlight of the album, the beat from "gasp" FREDWRECK is off the hook. I couldn't believe Fredwreck was on here, he definitely crafted a classic instrumental on this one. The beat is very smooth and perfect for a lil night time ride. And G SPOT GEEZ come more than correct on here with the lyrics, each verse fits the beat to a t, and the hook is great. I'll have to give this a...5/5

11.ALL OF PUERTO RICO-ok I guess the album had to have the up beat bouncy happy track, it seems every cd has at least one. To its credit JAY and the artist were successful in creating a nice beat, even the hook is tolerable. But the verses from AFRO RICAN are not the greatest verses to be recorded by a long shot, but they do move nicely along with the beat.3.8/5

Over all this a pretty strong album each track is good 2 great depending on your taste, so I recommend this cd to all readers out there.

yo, if your a true old school hip hop head that loves the gangster rap, this album is for you, in addition to it, you should check out the movie too, very good movie to watch. this soundtrack features artists such as Ras Kass, ice cube, mack-10, master p and more. if you love bumpin your system and need some serious bass this is the CD for you, i especially recommend track #2 for you system lovers. and in response to the post below this one, the song played right before the library scene is called "La Raza" by Kid Frost, i think it shoulda been on the CD

2 out of 5 stars What's that song?.......2005-02-17

There is a song in this movie that plays right before the library scene (where the gang guys get thrown from the library window)... does anyone know the name of this song and or the group its by?

so many people seem to write with such expert conviction on what is a good phish show and what isn't, the bottom line is that it's all what you like. the long history of the band and their willingness to follow creative impulse inherently spans so many different musical approaches it's nearly impossible for everyone to like everything. now i'm not one of those people who went to 50 shows or spent half of my life on tour but i've seen more than a couple, listened to more than my fair share of recordings and just about all of the official live releases to date, and i listen to a hell of a lot more than just phish and other bands they're typically grouped into a genre with. this one is good. the 'loaded' set, in my opinion, is fantastic - not necisarily earth shattering but i'd like to ask the naysayers out there this: what else do you want? it's tight, the band is obviously having fun, and it's pretty rockin'. not every single version of every song is going to blow your mind every single time - that's live music for you. the rest of the show is solid too, and the filler, as one other reviewer says, would not be included if it wasn't great. definitely buy this one if you're a fan of both phish and the velvet underground, and don't hesitate if you're just a phish fan, this is a damn good show and a damn good set. not 5 stars, that distinction is reserved for a select few shows/albums, but definitely recomended.

    4 out of 5 stars I was there, man!!!!!.......2006-07-08

I only just ordered the CDs, this is more a comment on the show...

This was the only Halloween show I attended, but what a GREAT venue... and can I say I'm a HUGE Velvet Underground fan!

The "filler" disk (4th) is a sampling from the first night's show (10/30) - which was their 15 Anniversary show - completely rocked, I'll have to dig out my set list from the night to see how "complete" the set is... too bad it's only one CD! I'm gald they included the opening for "Tweezer" (which they didn't close `til the next night - to close out the show)!

...then the next night was Halloween... (first 3 CDs) fo-git-aboud-it!

I'll append my comments/give an update after I've listened to it a few times!

4 out of 5 stars Its good, but there's better.......2005-05-15

Don't Listen to the people who say this show is mind-blowing, there's a lot better Phish shows out there. Its just a solid show.

The first set is the best part of Live 16 for me. Just look at the setlist. Punch You in the Eye, Birds of a Feather, Sneakin Sally Through the Alley, Chalkdust Torture, Mike's Song, and Weekapaug Groove were all done well.

I was a little dissapointed with Disc 2, but keep in mind, Im not that big of a velvet underground fan. They just didnt seem on for a lot of their jams. The 14 minute Rock & Roll was a huge letdown. There was still some good ones like Head Held High, and Lonesome Cowboy Bill.

Set 3 wasnt Phish at its finest either. I didnt really like this version of Wolfman's Brother, I dont mind the length of it at all, it just didnt have enough happening. The highlight of this set for me is Piper, everything else was just alright.

I dont really feel like commenting on the filler; its a filler, there not going to put something bad in the filler.

Altogether i guess i would call this an average phish show. Gets 4 stars compared to music in general and 3 stars compared to other phish.

    4 out of 5 stars 98 is a good year.......2004-10-08

i have heard this album and from waht i hear it is not too bad but i am not going to judge it if i have not listened to it thoroughly. anyways, i just wanted to say that if you think 98 is a bad year then you should check out live 17. it is the best live album that i have personally listened to thouroughly.

    5 out of 5 stars very nice.......2004-06-19

I don't really see why people have a problem with this show. I think it's great. The setlist is pretty flawless, and the velvet underground album is a great addition to the "musical costumes" phish have "worn" over the years. The filler from from the night before makes this a must-own.
