John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")
Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

The CD is the best American musical ever! The performances by Von Stade,Hadley etc are magnificient!
An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.
DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16
One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.
Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)
An American tragedy...........2006-02-06
This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.
Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26
Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

This generously programmed disc provides excellent value and outstanding performances of both major and lesser-known masterpieces of French choral music. The Fauré Requiem has been recorded many times, and several excellent versions of the original orchestration are available on disc. This one is among them, owing to John Eliot Gardiner's experience and perfectionist mastery of details overlooked by less-successful choral conductors. The real bonus here is the inclusion of the popular but very difficult Debussy and Ravel chansons, and the rarely heard but eminently worthy little part songs by Saint-Saëns. These pieces are a lesson in how to achieve maximum effect with the simplest materials. -- David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Gardiner Does Faure.......2006-03-11
Faure's Grecian, pastel-shaded Requiem works well with the Gardiner steamlined treatment, and Faure's unconventional original scoring - with violins omitted except for a solo violin - is different and refreshing. It makes one wonder if perhaps Faure was beginning to see a way out of the obligatory gray, massed orchestral sound of the 19th century, just as he found modal chord progressions as a way out of the exhaustion of the functional tonal system.
Very sensitive and beautiful period instrument recording.......2006-02-01
This is an exquisite performance of Fauré's great Requiem and it is one of my favourite recordings by Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique - even though their numbers are low in this recording. Gardiner uses the original chamber version of the work by the composer. The Monteverdi Choir is very good, as always, and it is nice to hear countertenors in the choir in this work. Childrens voices augment the Monteverdi Choir.
Catherine Bott sings with great feeling and purity. Listen to her Pie Jesu and you will buy this recording. Gilles Cachemaille is very good French baritone and I always enjoy his contributions to recordings.
Along with the Gardiner / Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique recordings of the Requiems of Verdi and Brahms, this is a fine recording to own. You'll probably never need to consider another recording after you've heard this one. Lovers of HIP will be enthralled and those who aren't normally attracted to that approach will be very pleasantly surprised.

Faure's Grecian, pastel-shaded Requiem works well with the Gardiner steamlined treatment, and Faure's unconventional original scoring - with violins omitted except for a solo violin - is different and refreshing. Gardiner surprises again.......2005-02-28
Perhaps we should just stop being surprised by John Eliot Gardiner, and begin to consider that perhaps there is no music, of any period, forces, or nationality, that cannot benefit from his transparent, lucid approach.
The Best rendition of this work... HAND'S DOWN!!!.......2003-04-15
This recording by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, is by far the best recording of this work available, and for various reasons.
1) The original orchestration of the Requiem, with full sections of Violas Cellos and Basses, but with only 1 solo violin; making the strings maintain an extra dark sound that is really invegorating.
2) The practically perfect performance of the Montiverdi Choir - arguably one of THE finest choirs in the world. Perfect balance, blend in all senses of the work.
3) Magnificent soloists capturing the very essence of what Faure was trying to accomplish - Notably the performance of Cathrine Bott in the Pie Jesu. Sweet, angelic, with NOT A LOT OF VIBRATO - which for some sopranos it is almost insulting for them to tone down the vibrato, as if to interfear with their virtuosity... Bott sings this with extreme delicacy, and in perfect context with the rest of the work, encapsulating the Requiem as it was ment to be.
These 3 qualities in the same recording is first of all extremely rare, and secondly it brings forth Faure in a completely new context.
This is truely a magnificent recording of Faure's Requiem, with all the velvety textures presented as smooth as milk choclate! A true model to our artform.

Album Description
Maid of Gold is a barrage of breakneck drums, dark samples, pulsing bass and destabilizing electronics and may very well be the most accomplished instrumental release in the Mush catalog. For fans of the Thrill Jockey label. All songs by Sixtoo and Stigg of the Dump. Mush 2003.
Customer Reviews:
4.5 Stars - Sixtoo and Stigg of The Dump.......2005-02-26
I'm not sure if Maid of Gold shares many commonalities with Music by Cavelight by Blockhead, but is original in its own right..and in some instances quite a departure from other instrumental hip-hop albums I own. The drums have Sixtoo's flair to them, and the album also feature his accompanying band who assisted the production on Chewing On Glass and Other Miracle Cures. The odd arrangement of instruments really complement the eccentric mood that seems to permeate the album.
It is indeed difficult to classify or articulate the feel of Maid Of Gold, which is why I feel that Sixtoo took the same musical approach to Chewing On glass... The songs are downtempo but rich in places, and indeed the strongest track is the symphonic "when i was your age".
A lot of people I know were not impressed by this album, and found it to be lacking. But like so many other hip-hop instrumental albums, the effect of Maid of Gold really sinks in after a few spins, and is solid. Fans should also be on the lookout for Stigg's debut on Endemik Records set for release sometime in 05.
Not trance, but good, hard-hitting downtempo.......2004-12-16
I honestly really don't know much about the music that I listen to. I don't know what the correct genre is, I don't know if the songs are made with live instruments, and I don't know what words should be used to describe how the music sounds. All I know is that it sounds great to me. Maid of Gold is a great album. The album I could best compare it to is Music by Cavelight, by Blockhead. Every track is very mellow, hard-bass-hitting, and full of interesting sounds from seemingly-live instruments. This is not an album that makes you want to dance; although some tracks will make your head bob. It's great for background music, it's not repetitive, and all of the tracks are unique. The bass is strong, the beats are varied and the tracks were produced well. When first listening to the album, I never heard one track that was too weird or annoying to the extent that it made me want to skip to the next. I give this album 4 stars for originality, good production, great samples, and good solid beats. Because I already clicked the 5th star, I'm stuck with it I guess, but it's still worth checking out. There are no lyrics; the whole album is like instrumental hip-hop. Related albums include Blockhead - Music by Cavelight, Abstrackt Keal Agram - Self-Titled, and The Opus - Breathing Lessons.
Great background trance.......2003-10-19
I got this cd from my friend who is a DJ and was given the cd from the record company. He gets dozens of cds this way every week, and they usually all stink. Villain Accelerate, however, offers some pretty interesting sounds. Tracks flow seamlessly from one to the next, and there really aren't any standout singles. In fact, when i listen to this cd, i rarely think about the music. That's not a bad thing. Villain Accelerate has successfully done what they set out to do: create interesting ambient background trance.

Customer Reviews:
Disney's Evilest.......2001-11-01
This soundtrack is yet another great one from the makers of Disney. But instead of putting all the "feel good" tracks on it, they decided to go the evil route. Personally, the best tracks on here are:
2. Gaston
5. The Siamese Cat Song
8. Be Prepared &
10. Cruella De Vil
but those are only my choices. For you avid Disney fans (kids, parents, & adults), you'll probably end up liking most, if not all, of these songs.
