"Yo, this is how I'm comin' for the nine-deuce..." (3.5/5).......2007-05-29
Paperboy debuted in 1993 with his album "The Nine Yards." "The Nine Yards" was marketed as an album built around his incredible single, "Ditty." This song's classic quality combined with the fact that he failed to produce another hit earned Paperboy the status of a one-hit wonder, but his debut album is actually quite enjoyable. "The Nine Yards" is short at only ten tracks (one an interlude and one a remix), but it's quite consistent and is actually very unique, sounding different than pretty much the rest of '93 hip hop. Paperboy is a pop rapper, kind of in the same boat as Young MC, Tone Loc, or Skee-Lo, and his name would never come up when discussing greatest lyricists. He's not menacing at all. His tales of sunny California, weed smoke, and dance floors aren't revolutionary in the least, and although he has a nice voice and a nice flow, it can be hard to understand his quick-lipped verses at times, especially because each verse is doubled up on the recordings. But like most pop rap, this operates mostly on the strength of the great production. West coast producer Rhythm D handles the beats, and he does a great job. The entire album is funky, upbeat, and even a little futuristic sounding, the beats are constantly interesting and enjoyable. A happy vibe is maintained throughout, and the combination of clever sampling, funky instrumentals and fast bass makes a nice sound. A lot of these songs are meant for dancing, but they're fun to listen to even without a dance floor nearby. The songs are very hooky and many try to recapture the magic of "Ditty," and while none quite do, there's still some very solid cuts to be found. The verses are none too amazing and the subject matter is redundant, but the beats are really fun and "The Nine Yards" is a winner.
The first song is the classic single, "Ditty." Honestly, I could count on two hands the number of hip hop singles as catchy, infectious, and memorable as this one here. From the clever Zapp sample, Paperboy's well-sung chorus, and his humorous, sunny yet philosophical verses, this is a true classic. "Bumpin' (Adaptation of Humpin')" was the second single, and it attempts to catch the same spark as "Ditty" by using another slick, well-known sample. This song is okay, the beat is nice but the hook is awkward and Paperboy doesn't impress like he does on "Ditty." "Studs" boasts another upbeat, catchy beat and very nice saxophone instrumentation, as well as a good guest appearance. "Goin' On" is also very appealing musically, and Paperboy flows nicely. "Zooted" is again nicely produced, but not quite as memorable as most of the other songs, the weed rhymes and another dance floor chorus aren't the best on the album. The short "Jack Move" precedes the average title track, neither the beat nor lyrics are outstanding here. "Little Somethin' for the Summer" is solid, and the album ends with the "Shoutouts" interlude and a remix of "Ditty" which just relaces the track with an (inferior) beat. I never really understood the point of a remix unless it was significantly different than the original or improved on it, this one does neither and kind of just takes up space.
"The Nine Yards" is definitely pop rap, so if the happy sounds of 1990s radio-friendly hip hop isn't for you, then steer clear. But if you can't enjoy these beats, or at least some of them, then I would seriously question your musical ear. This album would be worth it just for "Ditty" (especially at a low price, and considering "Ditty" isn't on iTunes yet!), but the rest of the album is surprisingly good too. Paperboy is harmless, pop-friendly, and well produced, so he's had his share of haters, and he's been forgotten over the years even as a one-hit-wonder. I recommend "The Nine Yards," it's fun and light hip hop that's nice for the summertime, and it's sure to be found at bargain-bin prices pretty much everywhere.
Long live Ditty.......2005-06-15
Ditty is the best!!!
i love ditty and we all loved ditty. A truly outstanding song that gets 5 star from me!
"Make sure you got the jim hats, strapped for protection
Because to me, my life is more than my erection"
please god make it stop.......2005-06-03
Now, i don't like rap or hip hop. However, i was subjected to this song 'ditty' a few years ago. Now it's stuck in my head and the only way i can get it out is by blowing it out. With a bullet. I hate the ditty.
Let me speak to the weak, I mean the rookies........2004-10-07
You dont know "Ditty"? And you call yourself a hip-hop & rap lover? Do'h let me speak to you, yes YOU.
I first listened to Ditty that was in Always Coca-Cola compilation album and it was on track 02. And that's the ONLY track of the CD that my CD-ROM played all day long everyday until there's a noticable mark of circle on the surface of the CD-ROM. I then backed it up to MP3 format so the faithful CD can get a rest. Heck, until now I even put the song into my mobilephone and listen to it once in a while. The song still get a special place in my WinAmp player. It gets played once everyday.
I still listened to Ditty, at least once a day. It IS quite possible the best rap song, no exaggeration. felt clasic, witty, naughty, yet not too bombastic or snobby like some of current so-called rappers. I liked rap since MC Hammer's U Cant Touch This, been listening to a lot of raps. But since i listened to Ditty, all other rap songs just pale in comparison. Nothing can withstand all the things that are Ditty.
It's a shame that good songs like Ditty doesnt make it to worldwide recognition. Most likely the only candidate for BEST rap song of all time and yet so few people know about it.
But that's just how it is with good songs, the really good songs, so few people know about. the so-so songs sung by flashy/marketable/good-looks singers are known by many. People still likes appearance over substance.
I dont know about the other songs but Ditty alone will make it worth the purchase. Even if you're not a rap or hip-hop fan, you'll bob your head unconsciously listening to Ditty.
Da Bomb Beat Now and Then.......2004-04-28
All I have to say is
"My Time is Held up Extremely for Cookies"
Everyone should do the Ditty!! Ditty if you want to so I can see if I want to!

New sound for Woody.......2003-05-20
I never heard of the Joel Rafael Band until I sampled some CDs at Borders last weekend. I sampled the 14 cuts a second time and I was hooked. I would describe this CD as the spirit of Woody in the contemporary sound of Joel's band. I highly recommend this CD if you like the words of Woody but prefer a smoother sound.
This is a gem of a CD that sounds much better than several other CDs I sampled. I wondered where this band has been? If you like old folk themes with a comforting sound, check out this CD.

Superb Jazz and Blues Sountrack ..........2005-05-26
Have just watched the movie "The Whole Nine Yards" and thoroughly enjoyed the whole shabang ! I've just ordered the sountrack and can't wait to listen to it , especially the Charlie Biddle Trio with his daughter Stephanie singing a great version of Gershwin's "They all Laughed".
After watching certain movies , I get the impression that many music soundtracks directly relate to the main stars eg. I've enjoyed most of the music featured in Bruce Willis movies , and also in Nicholas Cage movies which often seem to contain Sinatra / Dean Martin / Tony Bennet scores ??? Anyone else notice things like this or is it my imagination ? Do these stars have a big say re type of music in their movies ?
The movie (set in Montreal) and the superb jazz,,,,, a great plus for Montreal !!!!!
Enjoy..... Gareth (Perth -Australia)

Finally, a CD worthy of the term "soundtrack".......2001-07-29
These days CDs that call themselves soundtracks are anything but, leaving out songs from the movie to make room for a bunch of crap that isn't (see my review of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, or for that matter, ANY review of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack). But here, the soundtrack to "The Whole Nine Yards" takes a novel approach: it actually features the music from the movie. ALL of it, right down to the cues that are barely a minute long. My favorites are "They all Laughed" and "That Mellow Saxophone." Also, this CD is worth checking out for anyone who doesn't already know that Bruce Willis is one heck of a harmonica player.
Great.......2001-07-18
Great movie with a great soundtrack. I do find myself skipping a song or two once in a while but for the most part this is great listening. If you like jazz and/or blues you'll like this.
The Whole Nine Yards.......2001-02-26
I gave it 2 stars. One for each time I enjoyed the music. Ya know, I found the whole soundtrack singularly forgettable. Except for the Marshall Biddle Trio, w/Stephanie Biddle vocals. I have searched everywhere on the web and cannot find anything else about them. But I want to. I wonder if anyone out there does, and if they do, would you tell me? I want more...of them.

what an original guy.......2006-12-09
hes songs are original and he has great sparks running through his cd. its a great cd. i really reccommend it.
Honestly surprised.......2006-12-09
I'm currently addicted to the song, "I Know." I'm a bit too old for Drake and Josh and yet I turn to it sometimes. I'm more of the TRL age and heard Drake Bell was coming on. I was like, "Oh great, this should be cheesey." The song was REALLY good. I haven't heard the whole CD yet, but it definetely has some great songs. Drake Bell actually has really good potential as a musician, which surprises me.
"Baby, only give me a sign, give me a reason, make up your mind, cause darlin only a fool, couldn't see through us, know what we do, you know that it's true..."
Telegraph Review.......2006-11-20
The GREATEST cd I own! Telegraph by Drake Bell shows his musical talent greatly, everyone in my family loves it... in fact its the only CD I don't get yelled at for playing it loudly.
Surprisingly Great.......2006-11-10
It is no secret to Drake Bell fans that Drake's music is infinitely influenced by the Beatles. And the hauntingly familiar licks that pop up throughout this CD are refreshing - in the end, Drake has utilized his passion and developed something new and something that could make him the next rising star. Folks of all ages will like this CD, and my[...]thinks I'm a "cool mom" since we listen together! Buy it! You won't be disappointed!
NOT just a teen idol-a SERIOUS musician.......2006-09-06
Don't be swayed by the comments from young girls that have a crush on this handsome young man-I am not young (40's to be exact) and this young man is a seriously talented musician that is being unfairly lumped into the teen idol category and compared to Jesse McCartney, etc. He is NOT of that mold. He is more classic rock, R & B, etc. He is immensely talented and should be taken very seriously as a musician and should get more credit for this than he currently does. This CD will appeal to all ages and maybe even more so to adults if they will give it a listen. If the public and the media continue to refuse to give him the credit he's due simply because he is nice looking/young and therefore has a large pre-teen/teen fan base, then they're going to miss out on a huge talent. Buy this CD and enjoy the MUSIC.
