5 out of 5 stars The amazing Jessye Norman.......2007-06-18

Oh what a joy to listen to one of the richest voices of our time! A truly great singing legend. Breathtaking depth and effortless power!

1 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-05-08

Don't Know. Holder had a CD of Ludwig con Beethoven! Awaiting the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars Superb! As Always, superb!.......2003-12-27

There's not enough words that can express how wonderful Miss Jessye Norman's vocal talent is. What a wonderful opera diva! I thought the George Bizet's Carmen (CD) was magnificient but then when I got this (CD), I was thrown back. The range and style in "Ave Maria" is splendid, so is "Let's Break Bread Together," "Amazing Grace," and many more songs found on this CD. Miss Jessye Norman, Ms. Leontyne Price, Miss kathleen Battle, Miss Joan Sutherland are top opera divas on my list. So you know I have a fine taste of hearing great vocals; you can't go wrong in purchasing this CD. It's a treasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Timeless.......2003-09-08

Jessye Norman is one of my favorite opera singers. I hope that she may release another CD of Gospel songs very soon. We have waited too much!!! How about to revisit Marian Andersons' Gospel recordings!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why was I such a fool?.......2003-06-17

Okay, if you look at my other recommendations, you'll see that I'm a conservative. So, before my full embrace of the classical vocal artistry, and when I was just beginning to grasp politics (I'm only 21 now), I heard a beautiful voice and rejected it because it was singing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton.

I've learned a little since then. I've learned to ignore an artists political leanings, because they don't tell you much about quality (contrast the Republican South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with the Democrat Robert Redford). I've also learned to (sometimes) listen to the recommendations of friends. And well, after a friend heard me laud Reneé Fleming, Kathleen Battle, and Leontyne Price, she told me I needed to try Jessye Norman. So I did.

Jessye Norman here offers here own takes on many of the most-loved (i.e. trite) pieces in the religio-classical tradition. She renders one of my own favorites, "O Divine Redeemer", with great beauty. When other reviewers mention shivers on the spine, I can only nod. As a wonderful introduction to Ms. Norman, the great spirituals and hymns, or repudiation of foolish artistic discrimination, I highly recommend this CD.

With pretty synth lines; chiming, chugging guitar riffs; the right influences for a rock band, circa 2003 (the Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure , New Order, Radiohead, U2, Chameleons) and another sexy singer with a melodramatic, soaring tenor, this well-hyped Montreal band could very easily be another lame Interpol cover band. But the Stills are far more than the sum of their influences; they've actually recorded one of the best debuts of 2003. The first clue that this band is for real lies in their songcraft--hear the soaring "Lola Stars and Stripes" once and you want to hear it again. Hear it again, and it's stuck in your head all day. Check out the words ("We all need to feel secure, we're so middle class/ But I'm still waiting for next week's chemical blast") and you realize Logic deals with topical issues, such as the aftermath of 9/11, in a way that's neither cheesy nor histrionic. It's definitely ironic in parts--they've stolen the title for their moody "Let's Roll" from Neil Young's ill-fated tune of the same name, for instance. But this is still soaring, meaningful pop music. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

This Montreal four-piece creates a majestic wall of sound through ghostly, swirling pop with haunting melodies, artfully crafted songwriting, and sonic guitar explorations. Featured in Rolling Stone and MTV's Ten Artists To Watch In 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Indie popsters find niche in familiar post punk guitar pop.......2007-01-26

The Stills are a Montreal indie rock band who write expertly woven melodies crafted in the familiar niche of swirly-80s-post-punksters like Echo & The Bunnymen or The Church, but add a unique neo-vibe which finds them comfortable next to say, Interpol or Bloc Party. This is their best release by far, every song heart-wrenchingly wrought forward with layered guitars and superb lyrics. If you like a comfortable mix of brit pop influence, a dash of romanticism and depression, finely crafted into guitar heavy pulsating riffs, then this is for you! Fans of The Walkmen rejoice--this is the better purchase of the two~this LP is packed full of college radio singles, including "Gender Bombs" and "Changes Are No Good."

5 out of 5 stars and if the first song doesn't get you ..........2007-01-12

I'll have to nominate "Lola Stars and Stripes" as one of the best first song. The great tearing riff over delay pedal cuts you into submission for the sweet songs later in the album. Amazing tones, wide soaring tracks and simple melodies. Great Canadian album from both Montreal ... both The Stills and Vice Recordings ...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best debut albums........2006-11-03

The Stills set the bar high for themselves with their first full-length album, Logic Will Break Your Heart. Every song on it is amazing, and continues to be one of my favourite albums.

The Stills write very creative, smart rock songs that sound good no matter when you're listening. Most of the songs have a retro-rock feel, and the guitars play an extremely prevalent part in the album. Definite favourite tracks are "Lola Stars and Stripes," "Allison Krausse," "Of Montreal," and "Yesterday Never Tomorrows."

I recommend this album to everyone, but particularly those who are fans of The Walkmen, The Shins, and Interpol.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I've heard, EVER.......2006-08-26

This is one of those go-to cds I keep loaded on the I-Pod and on the I-Pod in the car. The album is awesome. I listen to it whenever I really want to hear the Stills or when I don't know what I feel like listening to, I put the Stills on and it gets me going and I am immediately into it. Seriously, most of the songs on this cd I have loaded on my I-tunes and they are all rated 5 stars. The Stills aren't crazy sex-drugs-rock and roll music makers- they are steady, tongue in cheek, brainy rockers. (if that makes sense.) They are a great band, and they have a good singer, and interesting lyrics. I love all the songs on this album and because of that I refuse to pick a favorite. It's great travel music, party music, get-ready music, chill out music. There are some slower songs as well. They aren't slow in a sissy kind of way, but in a "mysterious dude in a rock band" kind of way. I guess that's what it is- mystery rock. And it's so good I've been listening to this cd for a couple of years. Yeah...it's THAT good!
If you don't buy the whole cd, at least go to I-tunes and get "Changes are no good", "Love and Death" and "Lola Stars and Stripes". Chances are you will go back and buy the rest of the cd. But ff you still don't like the Stills, well... you're only out three bucks. I mean, what is that- a bag of chips and a Coke??

5 out of 5 stars Why can't this last forever?.......2006-08-08

First of all, to the reviewer who compared The Stills to The Shins: What? They aren't in any way similar enough to be compared except for the `The' in their names. The Shins are amazing in their own right, but moving on...

It's hard to believe that this is The Stills debut album. Most bands would be lucky to EVER have an album this good in their collection, but right off the bat? Damn. Logic Will Break Your Heart is one of those rare masterpieces of modern alternative rock that actually almost defines the genre. Some may think that Interpol has done it better or maybe they did it first, but to tell you the truth, I don't really know or care. The Stills deserve the credit for an astonishing, flawless album of their own without the comparisons.

Logic starts out with a bang. "Lola Stars and Stripes" comes on and knocks the indifferent stare right off your face with powerful cymbal-driven percussion and a guitar riff that sounds like climbing a really steep flight of stairs (Nice analogy, right? Hey, I never said I was an instrument buff). With timely and timeless lyrics that are equally apathetic as well as heartbreakingly honest, "Lola" manages to stray far enough away from a political commentary to actually say something genuine about humanity.

There is no doubt that "Lola" is a showstopper, but she never puts the rest of the album to shame. As many of the reviewers here have said, this is a no-skip album with thankfully no fillers. I hate fillers. "Gender Bombs" is the perfect song to be second; in some ways it rivals "Lola" as the best song on the album. It is my personal favorite; about 25 seconds in to the song, when the lead guitar kicks in, I'm instantly hooked. By the end, I find myself either muttering, `massive suiciiiiide...' or `the girl will school you' continuously until someone tells me to shut up or calls a suicide hotline...whatever comes first.

"Of Montreal" combines some of the musical elements of "Lola" and "Gender Bombs", but is a plaintive, intense song with heavy reliance on Tim Fletcher's anguished-sounding moans and cries. If you can't decide whether you love or hate his voice, this song might make the decision for you. "Allison Krausse" fades in quietly and then builds with a more distorted vocal and some killer guitar that meshes perfectly with Fletcher's brooding voice. Listen to "Animals & Insects" and the simple words `Oh my god' will somehow encompass every last feeling of inertia and nothingness you've ever felt.

The Stills have managed to channel apathy and angst into music that is not cliché or whiny. It remains hopeful instead of defeatist, multifaceted instead of one-dimensional, and enduring rather than tiresome after repeated listens. The Stills seem like they don't try to be profound, but it just happens accidentally. Or does it? Their highly divisive, drastically different second album, Without Feathers, questions that very notion. Stroke of genuis or the first signs of mental instability? I know what I think, but I'll let you be the judge on that one.

Anyway, Logic Will Break Your Heart is a good one. Trust me, whatever led you to this album, whether it was linked to another CD or someone recommended it, it happened for a good reason. You need to own this one.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and varied compilation of Sacred Choral Works.......2001-08-13

This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, is a master stroke of pure choral music. The piece is repetitive but Allegri builds up to a fantastic ending. Also of note is the glorious recording of Mozart's AVE VERUM CORPUS, Hadyn's DIE SCHOPFUNG, and Brahm's EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM. A MUST for any choral music fan.

5 out of 5 stars I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11

This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.

I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.

"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.

    4 out of 5 stars MarMSED.......2005-08-27

The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24

Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.

The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.

Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.

Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars How sweet the sound!.......2003-01-23

Heaven must be missing an angel because she's here with us-singing on this disc. This is arguably one of the most beautiful recordings of sacred music ever made. Ms. Norman brings a lifetime of experience to this genre-she joined her church choir at 4! The warm acoustics make you feel like you are sitting in your favorite pew-albeit with a magnificent vocalist in the choirloft. Jessye has conquered the world's opera houses in the most demanding roles-one of which garnered her a fifty-five minute standing ovation (Salzberg). But she is most resplendent in the music of her youth. The majestic voice soars over the orchestra and chorus to deliver the full beauty of the music. Ms. Norman also performs selections with organ accompaniment-appropiate since her voice has often been compared to the king of instruments-"with all the stops pulled out"! You will hear why she is one of the most acclaimed recitalists of our time. Her expansive vocal range encompasses every nuance of the music heard here. We are taken on a journey through the entire spectrum of the category starting with a classical Mass, moving through an American spiritual and finishing with a Christmas carol that will keep you in a festive mood year 'round. Amoung the gems on this disc is an Ave Maria sung in German and arguably the most powerful solo recorded performance of "The Holy City" ever. If you want to hear what the heavenly choir sounds like before entering the pearly gates-listen to this disc. Brava Jessye!

          Album Description

"LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER-- Further Explorations of the Afro-Semitic Experience" continues the musical exploration that pianist Warren Byrd and bassist David Chevan began on their critically acclaimed 1998 album, AVADIM HAYINU--Once We Were Slaves (also available on amazon.com). On this new CD, their first studio recording, Chevan and Byrd expand their interpretations and explorations of music from the Jewish and African-American Sacred repertoire. The pieces include classic works such as "Soon I Will Be Done" and Eliyahu HaNavi" along with some more recent compositions from the Gospel and Jewish music worlds including a rollicking version of Dorothy Love Coates' "How Much More" and a haunting rendition of Nurit Hirsch's "Oseh Shalom."

The title of this CD, "Let Us Break Bread Together," comes from an African-American spiritual. The idea of breaking bread as a symbol of fellowship and community appears in both the Jewish and African-American sacred traditions. It is also said that this was one of the songs that was used by slaves hoping to escape to freedom and one can think of no more fitting title for this new album.

In many ways this recording is a much more fully realized artistic work than its predecessor. Their first album, Avadim Hayinu, marked an early stage in Chevan and Byrd's collaboration and was recorded live in concert without the opportunity for second takes. Since that first recording, the two men have given numerous concerts, workshops, and interfaith services. In the process their repertoire and understanding of these pieces has continued to expand. This new recording is a stronger artistic statement of a kind that can only come out of the experience of numerous live performances.

The album includes liner notes by noted scholar and author, Dr. Julius Lester, as well as an historical essay about the pieces on the recording that was compiled and written by David Chevan.

Since 1997 David Chevan and Warren Byrd have been giving sacred concerts of Jewish and African-American sacred music throughout the Northeast. Audiences of all faiths and races respond enthusiastically to the spontaneity, wit and intensity of the performances. Raina Goldberg, Director of Regional Student Services, Hillel Council of New England called their performance "a moving, inspiring program" and Dr. Peter S. Zaas, Professor of Religious Studies, Siena College adds that "I would like to indicate my appreciation for the educational quality-not to mention the musical quality-of the selections that David and Warren performed for our event . . . [The] comments before each selection were learned and engagingly presented and provided a striking example of how music can reach the mind as well as the soul."
