eh.......2007-07-03
The production is on par with a lot of other stuff going on, but if you're looking for something as engaging as the first two albums, especially Wake the Dead, don't expect it from Broadcasting. Scott Wade defined the front-end sound of Comeback Kid, and, while sometimes bands can move forward after changing singers, I believe Comeback Kid just moved in a different direction. Not altogether bad, but not the earlier Comeback Kid.
Out with the old and in with the new..........2007-03-17
The vocalist change-up is probably the single most important progression for Comeback Kid. My biggest gripe about these guys was Scott Wade's terrible monotone crow-like vocals. With Andrew now on the mic, the vocals are very dynamic, from screams, yells, and not-whiny clean singing. This guy is a very talented vocalist (in addition to song writer). In the past he has written and recorded all the songs. This album sounds like he gave a little more creative power to the other band members (which isn't such a great thing). Musically, this definitely is a slight regression from Wake The Dead (which had an awesome Skate Punk musical feel). The song structures are more interesting with some experimental feel, reaching into more broad territory than in their past. The setback is the speed has dropped considerably (less than half of the album is fast), replaced with a majority of mid-tempo hymns, and dabbling with emo passages. All the fast songs slow down about 30% into the song and have the same slow outro. Wake The Dead was one of the few totally amazing Blasting Room sounds (with an amazing bass sound). Broadcasting has the typical flat Blasting Room sound (which sounds like a glorified garage Pro-Tools studio), with dull felty kick drum, and low-gain, low-volume guitar, and terrible P-Bass sound (after a ripping bass sound on Wake The Dead). So in some ways, this is a milestone better, and in other aspects its a step-down. Either way, I'd recommend buying this record. The track order starts with two relatively mellow songs, before exploding the energy. And to me, track flow really affects the feel of the album. So I recommend only listening to this on random mix. Highlight tracks are Give'r, In Case of Fire, and In/Tuition (which is a really strong snappy closing song). If the tone were nearly as biting and thick as Wake The Dead, and the ratio of fast to slower songs was greater, this could have been 5 stars.
wow.......2007-03-05
Very surprising turnaround for this band. I loved Scott Wade's vocals, but I never thought that this band could replace him with better vocals, more interesting post hardcore elements, and still keep that fast paced classic hardcore sound. Excellent CD. Every bit as good as Wake The Dead, and definitely not a repeat. Listeners who don't know that Scott left probably won't notice a difference, which is amazing. The new guy (former guitarist) actually sounds remarkably like Scott, but with more range and variety.
YAWN!!!!!.......2007-03-02
COMEBACK KID'S LAST TWO ALBUMS WERE FILLED WITH GREAT HOOKS, CATCHY SING-A-LONGS AND SOME PRETTY GOOD BREAKDOWNS. THESE QUALITIES HELPED SET THEM APART FROM A MUCH OVER-LOADED GENRE. SO WHAT HAPPENED? FOR ONE, THE LOSS OF THIER ORIGINAL SINGER REALLY HURT THEM BECAUSE FOUNDING MEMBER ANDREW NEUFELD(ORIGINALLY A GUITARIST) HAS A WEAK DELIVERY. SECONDLY THE HOOKS AND SING-A-LONGS ARE JUST PLAIN BLAND. LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE MUSIC IS FAIRLY UNINTERESTING AND SOUNDS LIKE A THOUSAND OTHER "OLD SCHOOL MELODIC HARDCORE" BANDS THAT CLOG UP THE SCENE. THE ONLY REASON I GIVE IT TWO STARS INSTEAD OF ONE IS THE PRODUCTION FROM JASON LIVERMORE AND BILL STEVENSON IS STELLAR (AS USUAL}. DISSAPOINTING TO SAY THE LEAST!
One of the greatest hardcore albums in years.......2007-02-28
When I heard the news Scott Wade was leaving Comeback Kid because he felt he was holding back the band, I- along with many CBK fans- were surprised and disappointed. I was sure if they put out another album it would never be the same as the outstanding albums Turn It Around and Wake The Dead. It turned out I was right. Broadcasting is different than Turn It Around and Wake The Dead... it's phenomenal.
Scott Wade might have had a point when he felt he was holding back the band because Andrew Neufield has better range as a vocalist and his lyrics are very, very well-written, although they're much darker and often times read like something Wes Eisold could've written if Give Up The Ghost was still active.
CBK's instrumentals have always been excellent and they step it up even further on Broadcasting. They do tend to use very similar breakdowns at times; that's the only knock I can think of on this album, and even then it's not much of a knock because the breakdowns never seem repetitive.
Perhaps the most impressive piece of Broadcasting is the production. CBK worked in the Blasting Room with Bill Stevenson for this album (just like they did for Wake The Dead) and it shows.
Overall, this is one of the best hardcore releases in recent years. Old-school hardcore will live on forever as long as these guys are playing music. 5 stars out of 5.

Elvis on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-20
Elvis is a man possessed in this rockin' classic. You can tell he woke up out of his Hollywood-induced coma provided by his manager and hit the ground running, launching his late 1960s and early 1970s revival and re-established himself as a viable musical artist again after spending years recording average movie soundtracks.
Where can you start and where can you stop. These songs are excellent from top to bottom and you can feel the energy just oozing out from everywhere. It makes you want to just get up and dance and crank the volume up all the way! I would recommend this album to anyone who loves raw and unplugged rock.
Elvis just rocked big time and sang his heart out in this -- reviving his image. What more can you say?

I was completely pleased with the purchase
Welcome to NBC and the Elvis Presley Special!.......2007-01-08
This is a two CD set by Elvis Presley devoted to what is popularly known as "The '68 Comeback Special". It was a television special that aired on NBC in 1968. The "comeback" part refers to where Elvis' career was prior to the special. He had been making a lot of bad movies, and he hadn't had a Top Ten hit since "Crying in the Chapel" three years earlier. The special featured a mixture of production numbers and live performances in front of a small studio audience.
Disc 1 begins with the show's opening production number, a medley of "Trouble" and "Guitar Man". Then we get the songs from the "stand up" performances. No, this isn't Elvis doing stand up comedy. It is a live performance of Elvis singing some of his biggest hits with a full orchestra. There were two of these "stand up" shows, and the CD features the "best" performances from them. For the most part, these are great, but "Blue Suede Shoes" doesn't really work with the big arrangement it's given here. Next, all nine minutes of the production number called the "Gospel Medley" is featured. Then we get "Memories", which was the second single released from the show. Next, "A Little Less Conversation", which was recorded for the show but not used (a remix of this song became a big hit just a few years ago). Then the production number called the "Road Medley" is featured, appearing for the first time in all it's 15 minute glory. The first disc closes with "If I Can Dream", the great first single from the special.
Disc 2 leads off with three songs from the "dressing room rehearsals", where Elvis and his friends work out what they want to do for the "sit down" shows. Speaking of which, one of the complete "sit down" shows is next, and makes up the bulk of the disc. There were two "sit down" shows filmed, and the other one is featured on a CD called Tiger Man. These shows were designed to feature Elvis in an intimate setting, playing songs with his buddies and joking around. The instrumentation is sparse, with Elvis on guitar supported by his original guitarist Scotty Moore, his first drummer D.J. Fontana (banging on a guitar case), his pal Charlie Hodge on guitar and his movie stunt double Lance LeGault on tambourine. Elvis is clearly having fun here, and it's a real treat to listen to, mistakes and all. The CD ends with the version of "If I Can Dream" that Elvis sang live to end the show.
This set features some of the best performances of Elvis' career. He sounds invigorated throughout, and his enthusiasm shines through to the listener. This is truly a "must get" for any Elvis fan.
Wow!.......2006-06-02
At 28 I discovered Elvis and I'm hooked now. I had never seen him perform "live" before so I rented the '68 Special DVD. I was blown away - - especially by the uncut sitdown shows on the '68 Special Edition DVD set.
I did some research and learned about this CD set and I had to get it! If you're not an Elvis fan before you listen to this, you will be afterwards.
Disc 1 is great - I love all of the previously unreleased material that didn't make it into the aired special but the real treasure is disc 2 - the fist sit down show. Elvis demonstrates his vocal ability - he can go from a raw "One Night" to a smooth ballad - "Memories". I also love the fact that he really rocks out on the guitar. The "oh yeahs" and the "one more times" from his original bandmates - Moore and Fontana - make this CD even better. They are all having a blast! This is an imtimate look at the "real" Elvis - a downhome, funny guy who loves making music. You really feel like you are listening to an informal jam session in one of their homes.
I will say, that if you've never seen the '68 Special with the uncut sit down shows you really need to. You can appreciate the banter between bandmates a little more once you actually see what they are laughing about.
All in all Elvis this proves why Elvis was and always will be The King!
Elvis 68 almost the best he ever got.......2006-05-28
It's late I should be sleeping, but I made a mistake. I tried, I really tried. I went to listen the 68' Elvis comeback special on Cd, released in 1998 as Memories: The '68 Comeback Special. Simply listen to it, and return it to the library, but I became distracted by track 14, and then track 16. Let's limit ourselves there.
"Trying to Get to You" stretches far back, 12 years worth to the beginning as Elvis explains earlier how they used to record. His yearn for the past almost makes it, and he has just the right ingredients in Scotty Moore on guitar to his left, and a mock gospel setting propelling him on, most notably in Charlie Hodge, saying things like "you got it!" The intimate crowd has Elvis feeling relaxed and comfortable and the growl in his voice shows why he truly was one of the great (the first?) rock singers. "One more, One more, one more time," he pleads for another verse.
"Sounds like your goin' up." Response: "Aww get dirty baby". On "Baby What You Want Me To Do," Elvis begins again, starting all over again, especially next to "Tryin to Get To You," where he went backwards. It's the simplest 3 chord pattern, but Elvis tears up on guitar adding just the right oomph, a malicious inflection until he rises in unison with a series of vocal "hup, hup, hup".
The early Sun recordings of Elvis, recorded with Sam Phillips were so good, that the '68 comeback special can only fruitlessly grasp to gather it's magic. In that sense, this is a disappointment, but Elvis was never to sound any better. Skip the over produced first side that includes one to many medleys and comes across as soulless.

Brian Setzer is not what you'd call a forward-looking guy. For this veteran guitarist and vocalist, the question is how far back he directs his attention. After having spent a major chunk of the '90s delving into the jump-blues and swing of the '40s and early '50s, Setzer returns to the revved-up rockabilly that first earned him a following when he fronted the Stray Cats in the early '80s. Originality has never been Setzer's forte and here the inclination to borrow extends to his songwriting: "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days" lifts generously from Dave Dudley's trucker anthem "Six Days on the Road" and Heart fans will recognize the riff that ushers in "Hell Bent." Still, Setzer is ideally suited as a player and singer to stand-in for rockabilly pioneers Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, which he proves here with the high-energy likes of the title track, "Hot Rod Girl," and, especially, the punky album highlight, "Get 'Em on the Ropes." "I guess I'm behind the times," he sings in "'59." With each album, Setzer confirms that's where he belongs. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
IGNITION!.......2007-03-15
This is one of my favorite CDs of all time. It's an energized rockabilly extravaganza, with the commanding presence of Setzer's Gretsch, and his strong vocals leading the way. From the opening song, "Ignition", to the final song, "Malaguena", it doesn't let up. The stellar lineup includes Brian Setzer on vocal/guitars, Mark Winchester on stand-up bass, and Bernie Dresel on drums. For me, this is a CD I can listen to where I enjoy both the music and the stories being told in the songs. I can picture a rebel dude driving his hot `50s car or Harley with his babe by his side! My favorite tunes are, well, all of `em! Some highlights for me are: "Ignition", a straight ahead rockabilly rocker. "Hell Bent", a cool, Johnny Cash type tune with some really hot and fast rockabilly licks. I saw Brian perform it on Conan O'Brien and, my God, he was smokin'! "Hot Rod Girl", an upbeat rockabilly tune with some very tasty licks and probably one of my favorite solos by Brian. The CD closes with "Malaguena", a revved up version of the Spanish-classical tune. I remember learning the classical guitar finger picking version of the song from the book "Solo Guitar Playing" by Fredrick Noad, when I was beginning to play guitar, so I was surprised and happy to hear this song on the CD.
I did get the privilege of going to one of the live shows for this tour, and Brian and the guys were incredible.
So, if you like Brian Setzer, the Stray Cats, and `50s rockabilly with an updated energy, I think you'll love this CD.
Think Stray Cats with more conviction.......2006-11-12
After being an integral part of the swing revival with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Ignition! is a return to Brian Setzer's rockabilly roots. While the sound on this album is similar to his days with the Stray Cats, the performances have a lot more fire and passion. In fact, Setzer's playing has never been better than it is here. As for the songs, several of them are top notch as tracks like "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days", "Hot Rod Girl", and "Santa Rosa Rita", and the smoking title track would have fit right in on the Stray Cats' Built for Speed album. Other superb tracks include the nostalgic "Dreamsville", the rave up "Get 'em On the Ropes", and the very catchy and melodic "59." However, the album's greatest tracks are the faster ones where Setzer gets to wail. "Hell Bent" is a wicked tune where Brian starts solo with the vocal over some nasty licks before the band kicks the song into overdrive. "The Legend of Johnny Kool (Part 2)" outrocks its predecessor on the Brian Setzer Orchestra's Guitar Slinger album while the closing instrumental "Malaguena", with its roller coaster ride of moods, is another gem. Other tracks like "Rooster Rock", "Blue Café", and "8 Track" are pretty decent although the latter would have worked better without all the yodeling. All told, if you liked the Stray Cats but wished they rocked a little harder, Ignition! is the album for you.
Grab your Gretsch 59!.......2006-06-20
This is Brian Setzer showcasing his over the top guitar wizardry and witty lyrical ability in near peak form. After spending most of the 90's with his big band orchestra, he takes a left hand turn back to his Stray Cat roots. Although 68CS is a three piece band, the comparison to the Stray Cats ends there.
From his snarling lyrics in "Get em' on the ropes" and "hell bent" to his country chops in a self parody like tune, "8 Track" to his blues influence in "Hot Rod Girl" and "Rooster Rock" this record is packed with creativity. He even manages to sneak in a little influence from south of the border with "Santa Rosa Rita" and the killer instrumental in "Madaguena" as the final curtain drops.
Brian's real genius is his ability to mix the styles of blues, swing, country, and jazz right on the fly. Add some light hearted lyrics and a nice supporting cast in Bernie Dresel and Mark Winchester, and you've got yourself a great rockin disc.
Although this should be on the shelf of every hard core rockabilly fan, it's friendly enough for casual to sit up and take notice. Brian Setzer continues his quest in keeping great rockabilly alive.
The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about is Brian seems to have no interest in creating another project similar to "Ignition." His follow up record, "Nitro Burnin Funny Daddy" was very personal, almost too bluesy, and the lyrics were a bit dark. In his next solo project, "Rockabilly Riot" Brian takes a whole other direction strips everything down, and gives us nice history lesson on the pioneers of rockabilly.
Although "Nitro Burnin Funny Daddy" and "Rockabilly Riot" have nice highlights, I still hope he taps the creativity he used to make "Ignition" to create another great rockabilly experience. So grease your hair, grab your Gretsch 59' and let Brian Setzer drive us and rockabilly into the future!
Ignition.......2006-02-21
Ignition is a great CD for road trips. Feel good, rock n' roll, rockabilly is the only way to travel.
Great CD! A must for any Setzer fan!.......2003-08-03
Although this is in the Rockabilly style, the sound is a little more grown-up than the Stray Cats stuff. Great CD. A must for any Setzer fan.

Album Description
COMEBACK KID have gained more momentum in the heavy musicscene this year than most bands do their whole career. With the 2003 release of their debut album, Turn It Around, and tours in North America,Europe, Australia, and Japan under their belts, the world is learning that COMEBACK KID are a force to be reckoned with. Originally formed as a side project to the Canadian hardcore act, FIGURE FOUR, the passion and energy of COMEBACK KID quickly took precedence and made them a full-time priority. Metal/Hardcore website Lambgoat.com stated, "these guys know how to play proficient, rewarding hardcore...this is one of the most solid releases I've heard in a long, long while." With a full-time label behind them, COMEBACK KID are unstoppable, and their debut album on VICTORY RECORDS, Wake The Dead, is a must-have for every fan of hard music with a message.

amazing.......2007-07-13
probably the most influential album i own, to me personally of course. I've based my life around the lyrics of this album. Before i got into punk/hardcore/metal i was the token loser kid at school who never stood up for himself and never got empowered to take charge of anything. All thats changed and i have this album (among a few others) to thank for that. Bottom Line go buy this album and stop whining about your life. Get up and do something about it
ARE YOU INTO GOOD PUNK???.......2007-06-07
Well I am and if you are into good punk rock, then you will surely like this CD. I've listened to cd so many times now, that I still like it. It is great to be headbanging to, and breaking walls. I see some commentors, compare this band to SUM41, and I can see why, because there style does sound similar. Though I have to say, this album is nothing like SUM41's album CHUCK, in my opinion (I'm entitle to my opinion too!) it is way better than the album chuck. Its also a good album to be working out with also, because it is very energetic! As I said all the songs are good, it is hard to say which song is the best from the album.
If you are a punk rock fan you will like this album, I know you will. If you like metal and hate punk rock, then you should be looking at other cd's cause this band will surely not be fitting your taste!
It's interesting.......2006-07-21
It's interesting how several of the past reviews say this band isn't like Underoath and several other labeled Hardcore bands. Few seem to know what pure Hardcore music sounds like. This is a totally Hardcore band. Completely fits into this genre. And concerning the review a few past "yelling" is more of the idea than "screaming." I enjoy screamo music. It is one of my favorite genres, but it is pretty disappointing that you have to be a screamo band to be hardcore anymore. That is not what hardcore is.
Hardcore, not Metal or Metalcore, there is a BIG difference!.......2006-07-19
Anyone who reviewed this and said it isn't hardcore doesn't have the slightest clue what hardcore is. Hardcore is not As I Lay Dying and it certainly is not Underoath like the reviewer "January" claims. Comeback Kid on the other hand is very much hardcore. Hardcore is Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Sick of It All, etc. and while Comeback Kid isn't that good yet, they certainly can be one day and this album is a good step in that direction. If you want to get into hardcore, check out this record and their first album "Turn It Around."
They own so much!.......2006-07-05
This cd is just pure intensity. From the start to the finish it never slows up and Im glad it was short because hearing it live is a trip. Whoever tried to compare CBK to Underoath and As I Lay Dying, your an idiot. I love both of those bands but they are not in the same sub genre as CBK. They are old skool hardcore.
And if mr im busy and dont wanna register wants to step into a CBK pit thinking they suck as much as Sum 41 he'll get knocked down and trampled. Those pits are insane because the guy has such a great voice and the band goes crazy.
If you like old skool hardcore or bands like Bane and With Honor pick this up. You will not be disappointed.

Album Description
Torquil Campbell of Stars writes: "Nightsongs" was a loving pastiche, but a pastiche nonetheless; "The Comeback" e.p. is easily the best, most original music we've ever made; it is a reaction to the mundanity of some people's reactions to our work; and we like it very much. We love Montreal, but we are very poor and very bored with that; the only way to make a comeback is not give a shit about being made fun of! We don't give a shit! Don't make fun of us! We are very serious people! Amy and Chris are in love! Evan and Chris are in love! I hate all of them! vive la revolution douce! "KRUSH" (Amy calims this is about me making her move from Toronto to Montreal, but i think it`s about her having a crush on Sully. Whatever, it's a hook and we believe in hooks) "VIOLENT" (Let's just say that sexuality is a powerful artistic tool; Sully really sounds like he needs to get off in this song) "THE ASPIDISTRA FLIES (This is a love song for lovers and people who have hope about the world; we wanted it to be very very beautiful; Eric Hove is a genius and plays the most wonderful saxaphone) "COTE DES NEIGES" (We all wanted to write an instrumental, so I came up with the idea of a snowfall, seeing as that the sole sensory experience you have in Montreal between november and April; Cranner and Sully wanted it to sound like spiritualized; I wanted it to sound like Losaida from Joe Jackson's Body and Soul lp (there i go with that 80's obsession again!) so i wrote that theme) "THE COMEBACK" (When U first wrote this, I thought it was a character study of a washed up rock star; then I realized it was the most autobiographical song I've ever written! Maybe it's both! A band favourite).

Probably the bands best yet........2002-01-29
Watch out for this band because they are on a move. Sad to hear about their less than ideal current record deal, but I'm sure a few more record sales would help them get out of the contract (hint.) This is the bands most provoking release yet. Their influences (one of which being The Smiths) are becoming weaker in the wake of their own emerging style.
Mellow pop finds beautifications in instrumentation and electronification. The bands sound is truly unique and innovative. The vocals bring a unique life to the music in slightly nasal, basic harmony. Their music makes me think French people who wish they were from British and then moved to the US. This is a must listen for lovers of mellow pop and those venturing into more electronic forms of music. My lack of ability to think of comparisons leads me to believe this band is doing something truly exciting and unique.
another amazing record.......2001-10-11
on their second release, stars prove that they will continue to grow in new and beautiful ways. even though their debut album, nightsongs, was released not too long ago, stars have already refined their sound. the hooks are even more perfected and the lyrics enticingly move from color to color and with great intensity.
the fist cut on the ep, the comeback, is a clear pop dance song, full of bittersweet hooks. the second track, violent, explores sexuality in a dark yet somehow loving way. the aspidistra files is simple and very acoustic love song. then stars give us our first instrumental, cotes des neiges, a song that was written to evoke winter. the ep then finishes with the comeback, another hook-filled number that reminds me of a cut off of nightsongs.
This ep is a beautiful addition to this band's small discography. A must have for fans of low key, beautiful electronica. The guy/girl vocals also add to the overall mood of the piece. A great album.

Jordan: The Comeback is Prefab Sprout's crowning moment, a pop album whose ambition--and achievement--challenge and ultimately top those of, say, XTC's Skylarking. Group mastermind Paddy McAloon covers the gamut here, ranging from incisive takes on American legends (Elvis and Jesse James) to love songs both wistful ("We Let the Stars Go") and self-assured ("Looking for Atlantis"). Jordan climaxes with "One of the Broken," a singular plea for compassion in which McAloon assumes the character of none other than God. --Rickey Wright
Album Details
Paddy Macaloon is Arguably One of England's Finest Modern Songwriters, and this 1990 Release was a Gloriously Overlong Melange of Styles, Bound Together by Some of his Most Inspired Melodies. The Nineteen Tracks Cover a Typically Diverse Range of Subject Matters, Including a Quartet of Songs About the Rise and Fall of Elvis Presley that Provide the Album with Its Thematic Core. Elsewhere, on Songs Such as "we Let the Stars Go", "All the World Loves Lovers" and "Doo Wop in Harlem" Macaloon's Songwriting Hit New Peaks. Never Gaining the Commercial Success it Deserved, "Jordan: The Comeback's" Heady Brew Even Appeared to Be a Step Too Far for Macaloon, who Did Not Release Another Album for Seven Years.

Disappointing Album.......2007-08-01
I've only been able to stomach listening to this album a few times. Maybe it will get better with a few more repeated listenings. My impression of this album is that it was worked on until all life was removed from the music. It's as glisten-y as anything I've heard. Shiny, cliche, uninteresting.
Maybe some of the lyrics make up for its soulless, keyboard demo-y sheen. I can't focus on lyrics until I've listened repeatedly a number of times, and well, each song it like eating a Twinkie. Like that paragon of artificiality, ingesting more than a few of these songs at a time is sure to make you feel queasy. I'm saddened that Thomas Dolby produced this since he can be absolutely brilliant, but I'm not feeling that brilliance here. "There is such a fine line between between stupid and clever" (to quote Spinal Tap). And I'm afraid this pushed that line too far.
Some highlights:
1. Looking for Atlantis. "Woo woo woo. Woo woo woo" (echo echo echo). Smarmy. Pristine. Repetitive. Not very melodic, but maybe there is a tolerable song in here somewhere.
2. Wild Horses. "Yeaah Bee-atch." A smarmily sensitive rap/R&B number full of sampled falsetto and gated-sounding keyboard pads. Move over Prince, your plastic version is here.
3. Machine Gun Ibiza. Nice wah in here at some point. Again, trying to be artificially soulful. Square cotton candy R&B.
4. We Let the Stars Go. I can almost see this as a standard Prefab Sprout song only it has a static, slow drum machine pattern against smarm.
5. Carnival 2000. The first 30 seconds of this song got me excited with a minimal arrangement that exposed the voice and had some feeling. Then, Gah. I'm hit with a cliche salsa drum pattern complete with whistles and hand clap noises. Seriously, was this dialed up from some drum preset? Still, this has been the most listenable song on the album yet.
6. Jordan: The Comeback. Start with some faux-hip talking. Unmelodic and boring verses with more talking in between. Oooh, modulation midway. Repeat some more boring stuff. Static, square drum machine pattern.
7. Jesse James Symphony. This short thing has shiny keyboard notes following the vocal line. Meh.
8. Jesse James Bolero. I'll give a point for creativity, but the bolero part sounds like it's being played by a high-fidelity hallmark card.
9. Moondog. Start with some swirly pads and an exposed vocal line. Not bad. Then chuck in some tinny synth piano and squeaky cheese filled synth horns. "Mooooooondog" chorus bit doesn't pay off too well. It's sorta boring and repetitive. You could almost see a good song in here somewhere. It just didn't quite come out.
10. All the World Loves Lovers. "Don't forget it." I could see this coming off one of their other albums since it has some similarities, only this has uninteresting and weak lyrics. Oh, there is that canned and repetitive drum machine again.
11. All Boys Believe Anything. An odd little 90 second interlude that should have come from Peter Pan if it didn't. It's ok, all 90 seconds of it. Unfortunately it's one of the best things yet on this album.
12. The Ice Maiden. Some interesting scraping sounds. You can almost hear a good song somewhere in here. Gah, there is that uninteresting, plodding drum pattern again. Stop the boring and uninspired plodding already.
13. Paris Smith. Why don't I just talk a bit in wandering vocal lines? Innocuously boring.
Bleh. I have to stop there. That's about all I can stand listening to. I just can't listen any longer. Who knows what the last six songs are like. If they're like what has happened until now, I don't particularly need to hear any more.
Sadly, I want to like this album and even put in a number of listenings while actively trying to like it. I just can't recommend it. Go buy Steve McQueen or Swoon since both are much better albums and haven't been sprinkled with sap and boredom.
Even more brilliant than others have claimed.......2005-06-13
Great Beauty. Mastery. Breadth. Depth. Integral Balance. Humour. A dark streak. On and On and On.
And it came from that golden time: when alternative music was truly alternative and not a commercial peg; when the legacies of psychedelia, the singer-songwriter tradition -- and just about anything else you can imagine, had the opportunity to allign itself in the practiced, collective geniueses of McAloon and Dolby; there must have been hell to pay.
The album may prove to be hermetic though; it's references may resonate for relatively few lucky people. Count yourself lucky.
Just Adding To The Accolades.......2004-10-30
I know of no other band which I've turned on to so many other people as Prefab Sprout. We always try to get others to dig what we're digging, and sometimes it works. But whomever I've had listen to either "Two Wheels Good" or "Jordan: The Comeback," they've left blown away. McAloon is one of the premiere songwriters of this generation, hands down. And those years from "Two Wheels" through "Andromeda Heights" are the finest in pop music. "Jordan: The Comeback" never loses its freshness, and I've listened to it dozens upon dozens of times. It's just an incredibly beautiful album. Nothing else like it.
You won't know what hit ya.
Prefab' climax.......2003-07-25
Great, great album, though Steve McQueen is still my all time fave. Plenty of great ones here though. Don't forget "Protest Songs" either..
More diverse than "Langley Park", and still great........2002-05-27
"From Langley Park To Memphis" is a masterpiece of lyrical literacy it is difficult for me to imagine anyone surpassing. However, McAloon in his heyday (1985-1990) was so skilled at writing lyrics that thrill me with their literacy that he attempted to outdo himself yet again.
Though the opener "Looking For Atlantis" is a slight misstep with its self-indulgent lyric, the music and playing are more impressive even than on "From Langley Park to Memphis." The next four songs are delicate pop, except for the dense funk of "Carnival 2000", a brilliant track highlighted by powerful horns and percussion. "Machine Gun Ibiza" is the most accessbile song on the whole album, but contains yet another wonderfully literate chorus in "Well you've earned the right to hang out with/Machine Gun Ibiza - Voodoo up rollmo' down/Machine Gun Ibiza/Hanging' ten with the hurrican sound.
The next four songs relate to the life of Jesse James and Elvis Presley, and are highlighted by the brilliant "Moondog" with its wonderful piano line and great lyric ("We chopped down a billion trees to print up eulogies" and ""And Daddies shook their fists/At hidden Communists"). The next group of songs include the beautiful ditty "All Boys Believe Anything" and "The Ice Maiden", a tribute to ABBA [I'm not a fan myself] that shows McAloon at his most literate. "Paris Smith" is a dream of a bad marriage for McAloon's vocal partner Wendy Smith, a theme continued in the next song "The Wedding March", their sparsest song ever.
The next three songs represent a plea for mercy from God and include the beautiful "One Of The Broken" with its semi-spoken vocal, and "Michael" (a reference to the archangel) on which McAloon's vocal sounds quite like Tori Amos (before Amos' time!), but manages to pull it off with some brilliant lines like "Ambition took me speed of light/To God's exclusion zone". "Mercy" is another short and beautiful ballad, and these tracks show him distancing himself from the fascinations with witches and idolatry he showed on previous albums.
The record then takes a sharp turn with the hard-rocking but wonderfully tuneful, even beautiful "Scarlet Nights", with Neil Conti's most powerful drumming since "The Golden Calf", and Wendy Smith making more prominent vocal contributions than on previous albums. The final track "Doo Wop In Harlem" continues the themes outlined in "From Langley Park To Memphis"' "Hey Manhattan", but is an extremely slow piano-driven ballad.
On the whole, this is a more diverse set than the two previous masterpieces, and is probably not the best introduction to a band whose best music is essential for any music fan. However, no flaws can be found with "Jordan: The Comeback" - it further solidifies McAloon's wonderful songwriting skills.

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10
i love waxman's music. i think of his work in the same way i think of kurt weill's music. the melodies are so rich, so complex and the harmonies stir the soul. the diversity of musical genres both covered was also wide and rich.
but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.
but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.
Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20
Many times the score makes the movie. In this case Franz Waxman Film Scores contributed well. However as a stand alone collection this really does not have a place other than a once in a while listen to remember the particular movies.
Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.
The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)
Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.
Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12
This CD sounds splendid. It is very rich and moving. A PLACE IN THE SUN is beautiful. REBECCA is very pensive and very much what you may expect in a Hitchcock film. However, the best cut on this CD is from TARAS BULBA. What a piece of music. It is both rousing and inspirational. Outstanding!
Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12
Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.
Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02
This CD is a wonderful place to start your collection of Franz Waxman film music.
Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

Clinton may be gone, but the humor remains.......2002-07-06
Political parodist extraordinaire Paul Shanklin showed no signs of a sophomore slump with this, his second album, released during election year 1996; in fact, from top to bottom, this may well be his most consistently entertaining album. His impressions of Bill Clinton and Al Gore have been improved significantly, the skits he performs are quite funny, and the musical parodies he sings are all fun and sung to rather catchy, familiar songs. Most of the selections feature Bill Clinton and/or Al Gore, but Shanklin does manage to sneak in a few jabs elsewhere. Louis Farrakhan promises to show you how one plus one can be nineteen and how half a million people can be made to equal two million in his new book Million Man Math Made Easy. Ross Perot puts in a couple of appearance, Pat Buchanan is presented in a skit relating to NAFTA-type concerns, and we are introduced to The Simpletons family.
As always, the music makes the album. Prominent among the songs are "Werewolves in Congress" and "Poll Man" (Soul Man), both of which feature great background singing by Al Gore. I especially love to hear Gore's "dum dum dum dum dee doo wah on "Only Baloney" (Only the Lonely). "Me and Hillary" (Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard) features such classic lines as "I'm hopin' that dope, Webb Hubble, only sings in the shower." In "Conservative Boy" (Material Girl), Clinton passes himself off as a conservative but admits that not even he believes he only exhaled. "My Girls" (My Girl) needs no explanation. One of my favorite tracks is "They'll Get You Babe" (I Got You Babe), in which Bill and Hillary exchange charges of wrongdoing. All in all, there are 12 songs, of which only one, Ross Perot's song "A White Tight Coat," is sub-par. Clinton may not be President anymore, but that does not mean we all can't listen to and laugh along with Shanklin's brilliantly funny parodies.
It's Funny because it's true.......2000-09-27
Paul Shanklin's best cd is probably "Executive Privileges" and followed by "This Land was Your Land", but this album has a few classic cuts, including "Werewolves in Congress". But the spoken parts of this album are funnier than the sometimes interminable musical parodies.
The weaknesses of the album come mostly by comparison: the Ross Perot parody song, "A Tight White Coat" isn't as good as the earlier "They're Coming to Take Ross Away" (though both songs sum up what most Americans think of the Reform Party hero); The "Emergency Volunteer Network", though, is possibly the best spoof ever of Mr. Perot.
In a welcome change, there is a pre-reform party Pat Buchanan parody on this album. And the material on the amazing Mr. Farrakhan is very funny.
The best reason to buy this album, they are "Werewolves in Congress", which is one of the most true statements Mr. Shanklin has ever made. "Poll Man" is good, but I think it's the tune more than the parody.
With the Clinton administration oozing to a welcome if delayed end, Mr. Shanklin's material may soon not be particularly funny anymore, but these albums will be wonderful keepsakes of what was arguably the most pervasively corrupt administrations in American history, ranking right up there with Grant, Harding, and Nixon.
Shanklin is amazing!.......1999-10-07
Just when you thought there wasn't enough new material on Bill and Hillary to go around, Paul Shanklin comes out with the CD Comeback Kid Tour. Shanklin's unique talent is what makes this a great work for years to come.
Shanklin's obvious political disdain for the current administration is what enable his truth through a great mix of parodies and songs to come shining through. Shanklin delivers a message that should put the white house on notice.
26 Tracks including the hilarious WEREWOLVES IN CONGRESS and POLL MAN, will have you thinking twice about just what and who is running the country. You find yourself asking for more.
The voices of Bill, Hillary, Algore, Teddy, Calypso Louie and others are superbly done. A must have for those tired of the shenanigans of this current administration. A real eye opener - a real pleasure!
Sensational!.......1999-09-25
Great hits such as "Poll Man," "Only Baloney" and my favorite "They'll Get You Babe" make this CD stand out!
Great "Lyrics". Great Music. Great Choices. Great CD........1999-06-24
Great CD. Good voices. Good words. Good choices of music. Very well done. Don't get Executive Priviledges, get this one. Wonderful humor.

Better than Wake the Dead.......2006-01-30
I got this CD after purchasing Wake the Dead. This CD can't even be compared to their second album. Wake the Dead is good and a great piece of catchy hardcore, but this CD is just so much better. The breakdowns are brutal and so refreshing. It's good to know that there are still bands out there that play good hardcore like Comeback. These guys are great live, and I recommend that everyone should see them. Buy either albums, they are both good, but this one is booming.
amazing? yeah.......2005-12-09
yeah, i'm not here to write some long review saying how much everyone should love this album...i'm here to write a review stating how much I loved this album.
and i did...i loved it.
so if you're into stuff like bane, kids like us, anchors away, maybe even TERROR and you don't already have this album, it would be a good idea for someone like you to pick it up.
hahahah.......2005-11-05
this kid below me hates cbk, yet he posts as a "GC Fan". gimme a break. This, along with a few of my bane cds, is my favorite hardcore album. Thats pretty serious since i have over 500 cds, half of which are straight up hardcore. This album is fantastic, if you love melodic hardcore with melodies and breakdowns, this is the perfect album. Much better than Wake the Dead. Pick this up
Crapy Crapy Crapy Crapy music, i feel so sorry for these guys........2005-10-14
YOu must truly sux if u like hardcore! only loser listen to these music. Even metal is a lot better. What a stupid music world u people live in. There this album doesn't even deserve a one much less a 5. I don't know why you would listen to this kind of music, i just don't get it, it just sux.
