Amp is, of course, the late night MTV program that's helped turn America onto "that electronica stuff," and this is the sequel to 1997's commercially successful Amp collection. Amp 2 gets things started off right with a house-rockin' unreleased track from Fatboy Slim, but can't sustain such sheer energy throughout, courtesy of flaccid beats from the likes of Prodigy and Adam F. Nevertheless, Amp 2 spins an educational emphasis, stressing the link between new and old schools, with varied collaborations between hip-hoppers and electronic artists. The most successful tracks go back to the funk from which both musics borrow--particularly Pigeonhead with Lo-Fidelity All-Stars, a Jungle Brothers remix, and Roni Size/Reprazent's "Brown Paper Bag," which sees the future in the past all by itself. --Mike McGonigal

Spin
[N]early every cut here has some rapper or rude rock boy pumpin' up the adrenaline. With surf guitar, chemical beats, and an incessant sample of obscure MC Lord Finesse changing "Right about now/ The funk soul brother," Fatboy Slim's "The Rockafeller Shank" represents the new brainmeltin', body- poppin' party grove.

4 out of 5 stars Nine years later..........2007-05-14

...I still listen to this CD from time to time. Nah, I don't like every track. And yeah, I can find everything on here somewhere else. When I bought this, I was 19, didn't have a lot of loot, and wanted a few of the tracks. Now that I look back, I'm glad I did. "Rockafeller Skank" is an absolute techno classic. The Method Man/Prodigy track is pretty good. "Battleflag" is a nifty one-hit-wonder track. The JB remix is fun, and definitely Aphrodite. The "Sexy Boy" remix is almost scary ("wanna go for a ride? only 25c"). The Goldie vs KRS-One track is, IMHO, the best techno-rap crossover ever. "Circles" is solid. I love Roni Size and Propellerheads. And the hidden Chemical Brothers track is interesting, if not amazing. All in all, this is a fun album, full of great hits (with a few stinkers in between, unfortunately). I would recommend this album, even now, to someone who is just learning about "electronica" and wants to experience many different forms of the genre in one easy sitting.

5 out of 5 stars It's got flow...and cheers you up!.......2005-01-04

Now in 2005, this Cd sounds splendid, everything here blends wonderfully-Yeah, in hindsight. Even if at the time it did not.
It is the same with classical composers, in their time, you could distinguish Haydn from Mozart, but centuries later, you could listen to them side by side as if they were one.
And a Cd like this sounds incredible in retrospective, specially in these times when RNB and Hip-Hop have taken over the airwaves as invasively as they have....This is a 1998 time capsule, and captures all that electronica fever that could have been but never really was ( Popular on Billboard I mean.)...listen to it!

4 out of 5 stars Buy this cd.......2001-09-22

I definitely think this cd is a must have. Of course on all cds, you have two or three cruddy songs, but on the whole, there are some bangin tunes on this cd. My personal favorite would have to be the KRS1 and Goldie joint. Sure the fatboy slim song is played out, but 5 years from now, I wouldnt mind rockin to it again. Just check out the list of artists on the cd. You cant possibly go wrong with that much talent. Big A in the Hiz-A

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, it may not be "electronica to u but it is to me!.......2000-07-29

It seems like all the losers who think electronica isnt the compilation of ALL music hate this CD. Wake-up! music critics! MTV Amp 2 is one of the greatest Rap-techno-rave combo's yet.... from the amazing KRS-1, to the great Chemical Brothers this Cd's got it all, for the electronic lovers swinging more towards rap.. or people new to the electronic genre, this is a great introduction to tecno/trip-hop! Buy it! its worth it!

1 out of 5 stars No Good.......2000-02-05

Well, I have to agree with the last few reviews in that MTV sure does want to make a buck and ruin another part of our culture. Well we won't let them. First Amp was ok, I own both, but the only attractive song on here is Fatboy Slim and if you like that song you should already own You've come a long way, Baby, so don't waste your money and buy some real electronic music, moonsine records, or uc music if you like hard house. Let's hope they don't make Amp 3.
