What Happened?.......2007-05-07

Public Enemy has always set a high standard for their music and message. They could always be counted on to break down reality, put it in a groove, and drive a message home so hard that it was inspiring and also a call to action on all levels. I know they still have the ability to do that. I see them live regulary in NYC just about everytime they are there. I was there when Chuck D did the guest shot with George Clinon and P-Funk at the Appollo last year. I'm a die hard fan. This album however is very dissapointing. Public Enemy never condescended to profanity laced tirades. They were always too smart, too intelligent for that. On this latest peice of work there are so many "F's" and "MF's" that, unlike "Bum Rush" "Fear of a Black Planet" "Nation" or "Apocalypse" I won't even share it with my kids or the other young people that I know. I'm a youth counselor and have worked with young people for years. I like to share music with them that has a solid , moral message. PE has always fit the bill in my book. That, being said, I was really looking forward to this CD based on the reviews I've read here on AMAZON.COM. I feel like I've been hoodwinked! When your vocabulary is deep, you don't need to resort too profanity to make a point. There are plenty of words available with which to communicate. With the addition of PARIS their deleivery has definitely changed. It's not that my ears are so "pure" that I'm offended. It's just that the CD is laced with the stuff. Also, assassinating the President and burning down the White House are not going to get us where we as BLACK people need to be. That's just dumb. We are at WAR and one of the first things the devil tries to control is your tongue. If he can control your tongue, he can control your body and control your world. Unfortunately, on this piece, PE's articulation of the issues has gone into the gutter. Yes, they are still talking about things that need to be said that no other rappers en mass are not doing. There are a few exceptions. My guess is that they are trying to reach the "Thugs" and convert them to polital and social action rather than "Pimpin', ho'in, dealin' and blingin'. I understand the sentiment, but the gutter language tactics turns me off. One of the things I have always liked about PE is that the delivery was smart, intelligent, and meaningful. This record is profane and mean sprited, not just angry. It makes it hard for me to identify with where they are coming from this time because there is no real HOPE displayed here. Not even a glimmer of PEACE and LOVE. Too negative. It just doesn't make one think about solutions to problems. It just expounds on the problems themseleves. I don't want our young people to grow up sounding like this. We need a revolution and that starts in the home with the parents or guradians. We need a sense of identity, meaning and morals. If we don't have that, we will end up living and sounding just like the rest of the lost people in this world. Living beneath our God given privledges and always looking for someone or something to blame rather than taking full responsibilty for our own lives. God bless all who read this and have a nice day.

PE still pumpin' out the funk..........2006-08-30

I have to say that PE is one of my all-time favorite hip-hop groups of all time, having made three of the greatest hip-hop albums ever ("It takes a Nation...", "Fear of...", "Apocalypse..."). Still, I have been less than impressed with their output after the "holy trinty". Each album contained at least a few good songs, but what previously made PE so impressive was their ability to make cohesive, exciting and surprising albums as a whole, not just a few good singles. It's been quite some time since PE put out a CD that didn't feel some-what half-baked. Which it's why it's a pleasure to report that for the first time since PE's golden age, they have made an album that hangs together in it's entirety. Paris was a good choice to collaborate with; his sound is definitely old-school, yet it still sounds fresh overall, giving PE a much-needed shot of musical (and lyrical) adrenaline. Still, it does not even comes close to "It Takes A Nation...", "Fear of..." or even "Yo, Bum Rush..." (but what could?), and the overall production suffers at times from an identity crisis that often stems from such collaborations. Still, a fine effort, overall. Now I realize some hip-hop lovers (are you listening, reviewer "Venom"?) are eternally stuck at age 14, and can only enjoy hip-hop for it's oh-so-very tired thug posturing, braggadocio and celebration of materialism; I suppose it goes well with sitting in your bedroom fantasizing about empty empowerment, while self-medicating to some prime chronic. I, for one, am tired of the caricature hip-hop has become (it's sadly following the same path as rock music did in the late 80's, when rock music became a bloated, empty affair with crap "Hair Metal" bands that crooned about hot chicks, hot cars and lots of cash). Ever since PE's poularity declined, there's been a void that has yet to be filled in Hip Hop, and I do hope some young gun steps up to the plate. Until then, new PE is always a welcome addition to my MP3 player... even if they now are old farts. Now, if only Chuck D would smack some sense into Flava Flav regarding his horrifically embarrassing televsion career...

Rebirth of a Nation is Public Enemy's 11th studio album. It is also the first album where frontman Chuck D delegated most of the writing & all of the production duties. Bay Area-based rapper Paris serves as chief lyricist and producer for this project, and it's released on his own Guerrilla Funk label. With his own history as a politically minded rapper, Paris is a sympathetic facilitator for the hard-edged social commentary that Public Enemy is known for. Rebirth follows barely six months after the band's New Whirl Odor release late last year. But Rebirth is decidedly not a bunch of leftover session cuts. Paris manages to bring out the best in Chuck, Flavor Flav and Professor Griff on the LP's 16 tracks. Rebirth's rhythm tracks take cues from Public Enemy's early releases, updated with the decidedly funk-driven soundscapes that Paris is known for. Samples are mostly eschewed for live instruments, adding to the LP's organic feel.

The title track, a play on words from the D.W. Griffith movie, finds Chuck announcing Public Enemy's return to a hip-hop world that has gotten more grim since they first came on the scene: "We come rough with the rhythm and rhymes that pack 'em in/ Bust with the rhythm that shine back once again/ Still ride with releases reaching each/ Still strive to revive and keep the peace.." "Plastic Nation" indicts plastic surgery obsession: "Was all part of the plan to keep her lookin' right/ Figured she could be Janet if she took the knife/ It's not a sin to be thin, she tryin' hard to fit in/ Knowin' soon she'll be a citizen of the plastic nation." "Hell No We Ain't Alright" laments the Hurricane Katrina tragedy: "Shelter? Food? Wasssup, where's the water? No answers from disaster, them masses be hurtin'/ So who... they call, Halliburton? Son of a Bush, how you gonna trust that cat?"

Paris himself takes the spotlight on a handful of tracks, including "Hannibal Lecture": "Same racism profiling each of us all/ Same outsiders where we live enforcing the law/ Gats clappin' on the streets, gunplayin' with heat/ Same prisons full of brothers herded in like sheep." Other guests making their voices known on the LP include N.W.A. alumnus M.C. Ren and former Ice Cube protégé Kam. Flavor Flav's solo talents are highlighted on the whimsical "They Call Me Flavor": "Good morning heartaches and tell me what's new/ Got nothin' else to do but drink brew/ Tryin' to feel the flow, gettin' so low/ Standin' here drinkin' a quart of Old Gold." Flav keeps it professional here, managing to avoid plugging his many reality show stints.

Public Enemy's Bomb Squad produced California rapper Ice Cube's first LP back in 1990. Sixteen years later, Public Enemy finds reinvention in another west-coast colleague and a solid showcase for a veteran hip-hop band.

This is that real and raw message in your earhole(s). Now these tracks take on a life of their own. If you cant feel this CD, you are broke and disconnected no doubt. If I could, I would give it more than 5 stars.

Vintage Paris.......2006-10-16

Standout tracks: FIELD N***A BOOGIE, SHEEP TO THE SLAUGHTER, SPILT MILK, TEAR S**T UP(killer collabo with M1), AINT NO LOVE(Paris and KAM split hippoppers in two), LAY LOW(Paris burns fire on studio gangsters), YOU KNOW MY NAME, EVIL, AWOL, WHAT WOULD YOU DO, HOW WE DO etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: Paris gives you his best and most consistent album yet. Its unfornate that nobody has heard of this highlight album of 2002. Its message is one that needs to be heard especially now!

Political Rap At Its Finest.......2006-08-11

Paris is probably one of the most underrated rap artists in the game right now. Every aspect of this album is top-of-the-line. The beats are flawless and lyrics are moving and right on target. Even the Intro/Interlude parts are awesome. If you like true hip-hop, and I mean for more than just beats, you MUST pick up a CD or two by Paris. This happens to be my favorite album of his, mainly because its most relevant to me, but I have all his CDs and they are all well worth buying.

Knowledge........2006-07-27

This album has obviously been reviewed by people who know nothing about hip hop. Maybe some punk rock converts, or fans of the supposed "underground." This is the sort of album that makes casual rap fans think the underground is boring. Paris flow is average at best, his voice is uninspiring, although he doesn't sound like a nerd, and his production is far below average. Honestly, i was expecting more. Of course people who don't know hip hop can overlook the "hip hop" and "music" elements of this album, and just listen to the lyrics because, by golly, they're political! It seems that for people without friends songs about politics is the equivalent of "shake that booty" for the partyers. Now i have nothing against political rap. However i refuse to give low quality rappers who make low quality music such as paris and immortal technique praise just because they have political lyrics. If you're looking for political rap you would do well to check for a rapper with actual mic skills such as wise intelligent, or mr. lif.

I sit around my kitchen listening to this album every couple of nights after I watch reruns of Friends. It's very "hip". I'm all about the "message" that Paris throws down to us peeps and homies. He's real fly and I'm down with that. My 4 year old daughter loves the rad beats too!

It's such a rarity with M&M's, 50-Cents, and other comercialized mindless bullcrap out there. This is great music if your progressive and millitant, if not, stick to the mindless media garbage and crap.

This CD as litteraly as it's title states, a struggle against croperate crap.

One of the best rap albums EVER!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-07

This album just blew me away. I had to go on a major expedition for it when it came out because many stores weren't carrying it. (He got a lot of derogatory press for his song "Bush Killa", and I guess retailers caved under the pressure.) It was worth the effort though. This is one of those few albums where EVERY SONG IS AWESOME. This is not an exaggeration. Every single song on this album is fantastic. Most albums have a good song or two, maybe a few at most, but ALL THE SONGS????? That almost never happens. And for the more politically conscious, this album is as relevant today as it was the last time a Bush sent soldiers to Iraq. It's an album that makes you think without being pretentious, if you haven't banged all the brains out of your head from the beats in the songs. This is an album that should have blown up, not been buried under the parade of booty shaking bling wearing sizzurp drinking drivel that has assailed my ears in the past decade or so, and it belongs in everyone's collection. It's as good today as it was back in '92/'93 when it originally came out.

Standout tracks: MAKE WAY FOR A PANTHER, SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, HOUSE N---AS BLEED TOO, BUSH KILLA(original and hellraiser mix), COFFEE DONUTS AND DEATH, THINKA BOUT IT, GUERRILLAS IN THE MIST, THE DAYS OF OLD, CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE, CHECK IT OUT CH'ALL and ASSATA'S SONG(beautiful ode to black women). Filler: NONE! Bottom line: Paris comes back with an album that is even better than his first one. Political and socially conscious rhymes flood this album as Paris steps his production game up a notch(not that his beats before were bad) and gives mainstream america something to fear. Its unfortunate that not many people(even those who are conscious) have never heard of him. If you like Public Enemy, Dead Prez and The old Ice Cube then youre gonna like this one. Chalk this one up as another certified classic by one of the most underrated rapper of all time!

WOW!! A True Classic Indeed!.......2006-04-21

This album is the best CD he has done BAR NONE! I love all of his CDs and I own all of them. However, if I'm asked which one of his CDs really stand out in my mind, it would definitely this one. Placing the events of that time into a raw flow that gives you no choice to listen while boppin' your head to the beat is brilliance at its finest. In fact, this CD stands the test of time.

Paris has all that it takes to be a legend before his time. In fact, this brother is ahead of his time in terms of talent and knowledge. This is a HIGHLY recommended masterpiece that should be REQUIRED listening for people who want more out of their entertainment and a message in their music.

GREAT ALBUM!.......2006-03-27

Paris as always brings hardcore powerful music with a message and this album is one of his best. I reccommend this reissued version cuz the sound quality is better and he did a nice job remastering it. Sadly many people sleep on this album because it is kind of unknown due to its content being so raw. Paris doesn't hold anything back and that's just one of the many reasons why i respect him so much. Buy this along with all his albums. If you like Public Enemy or Dead Prez then this should fit you well.

Classic.......2005-04-27

I am not very giving with 5 star reviews, but I believe this album qualifies as a classic. Paris has always brought political fire, but this album displays him at his most angry, yet also his most insightful and poignant.
"Make Way for a Panther" begins the album with a bang, with Paris at his venemous best. The next several songs are slightly towned down, with the exception of the infamous revenge fantasy "Bush Killa". "Coffee, Donuts and Death" leads me to the only complaint I have about this album. The song opens with police officers talking to a (presumably black) woman, it would have been much better to make the intro a seperate track.
Suprisingly, it is Paris's more sensitive tracks like "days of old" and "Assata's Song" that seem to resonate with me the most, proving that Paris is a diverse emcee capable of rage and introspection.
This is a classic album that is a must for any good hip hop collection. If Paris's label had not delayed its release until after the election of 1992, he could have very well blown up and become a household name. You won't be dissapointed with this purchase, especially if you like early 2pac, Ice Cube, Public Enemy or X-Clan.

Str8 up this is a three and a half. T Kash does not sound like no one else and his rhyme style switches up. He's from the Bay area and down with Paris and Guerrilla Funk records. He's not preachy instead he talks raw real street knowledge. Similar to the way Cube did it back in the day.

The production is simple but effective and he rides the tracks with ease. They did a good job selecting beats that fit him in my opinion. I wish the media would pay as much attention to this as they do some of the other types of Hip-Hop that we hear 24-7. This brother deserves a applaud for coming out with a good record like this that many people will not here. He has all type of subject matter discussed throughout the album, but only one subject sum's them all up "AFRICAN PEOPLE WAKE UP"!!! Hotep!!!

T-KASH is Fierce!.......2006-04-01

Where do I begin? WOW! Yet again, Paris put it down on the Production tip. T-KASH's CD is off the chain! He has a fierce flow. His messages are so evenly balanced on this CD. He is the spokesperson of the forgotten cat on the streets. Yet, by bringing his brilliance to music, he is able to talk to the bourgeois intellectuals who feel that cats on the street don't matter. He says they DO matter and you better pay attention. He tells their stories brilliantly.

T-KASH is indeed a force to be reckoned with in the game. His weaponry through the mic is a message of hope, get-it-togetherness, and staying informed and prepared for the battle that we as a people endure everyday. He is a perfect fit for the Guerrilla Funk family and this CD will stand the test of time.

Well done to T-KASH and continue to do what you do. You not only talk about the streets, you live it everyday and thank you for the stories we don't hear.

How did I find out about Paris? I was up north and I went to FYE and saw his second album(Sleeping With The Enemy) staring me in the face. I picked it up, listened to it, and fell in love with the whole album. I bought the rest of his albums from Amazon and lets just saw I dont regret buying them at all. If you love political hip hop then you must support Paris. Listen to this album and you'll see why he was intentionally kept away from us. Standout Tracks: SCARFACE GROOVE, THIS IS A TEST, PANTHER POWER, BREAK THE GRIP OF SHAME, WARNING, EBONY(this color called ebony), BRUTAL(somewhat sounds like LL in the second half of this track), THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT, THE HATE THAT HATE MADE, MELLOW MADNESS(on a jazz tip), I CALL HIM MAD(DJ Mad Mike was on fire!!!), ESCAPE FROM BABYLON and WRETCHED. Filler:NONE! Bottom Line: Paris gives you what you want from this excellent debut. Political and social commentary just the way you true lovers of hip hop like it. Make this album a definite part of your collection.

First of all, let me say that I own every Paris album, and I know all about him, so anybody tryin' to trip and tell me what's up can hold their tongue and not waste the oxygen. Paris has always had great beats, with heavy bass and that west coast vibe that fans of the genre will love, however, lyrical content leaves much to be desired. Not because Paris can't flow, which isn't the case, but because as a white listener I don't enjoy hearing repeated comments about how "whitey" needs to be skinned like a pig, and that all "devils" must be destroyed. It seems a little bit silly for those who feel that they have been treated with unfair suppression and disrespect due to their race, to turn around and perpetuate the same type of cycle. I say have your opinion, be angry about the racism that has existed for years in this country, but don't become racist yourself, or you defeat your own purpose, consciously or not. I am white, and I don't hate anyone for their race, even though there are many people that I hate for plenty of other reasons, so if you want to hate me for my race then stop pretending that you're better than a klan member, cuz you're not.

Paris and Friends bring the necessary heat.......2007-03-19

Paris and a couple of good comrades come together for what is probably the most important compilation out now. Guests include Dead Prez, Conscious Daughters, T-Kash, The Coup, Mc Ren, Kam(where have these last two been?) and others. Standout Tracks: CANT BREAK ME, STILL AINT FREE, CANT HOLD US BACK, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED, THROWYAHANDZUP, RAID, GHETTO MANIFESTO(shout outs to The Coup), DOWN WIT US(surprisingly good) and LAY LOW(what starts out as a conversation turns into a lyrical assault on hippoppers and studio gangsters). This track is also on Paris's album Sonic Jihad. Filler: NONE!!! Bottom Line: Hard Truth Soldiers vol.1 is the best compilation out now and is definetly a highlight album of 2006. Paris holds it down with the production and his rhymes plus the guest appearances are on point too. Nothing but political and social gems from track to track. From beginning to end they are bringing you back what youre missing in hip hop: HARD TRUTH!

This album was blessed with so much talent. But the sad thing is the kats who denounced this album don't know where they stand politically let alone politics. As for MC Ren don't you remember 100 Miles And Running. If you never liked Paris or the other Artists why preview the albums. As an African American we need to hear songs other than dancing and all that other mess. That glorifying money, cars, clothes and degrading the African American woman, who do you call the sellout. I applaud all the rappers who keep it hip hop not rap. Like Wu said rappers are rapping R&B(Rap and Bull****). No wonder Nas stated Hip Hop Is Dead.

Viper Bites The Hard Truth.......2006-08-08

Hard Truth Soldiers V.1: 4 1/4 Stars

The reviewer that goes by the name of 'Viper' is not unlike many here in America. It's no great stretch to assume that Viper is from the same ilk that either endorsed/supported the current presidents election (read election as 'stolen election') or didn't care. Viper's caught up in the spectacle of mainstream media, news propaganda, worthless entertainment & other mindless dribble - ill conceived programming designed for our detriment and demise, so we never become aware that the common U.S. citizen (and world citizen) is the direct target of 'domestic' enemies, that do indeed exist (must see video: Loose Change). Viper's thinking patterns are clearly revealed within his direct quotes lifted from a portion of his approximately 140 Amazon reviews (140?!?! whew! sup whid dat?).

Viper on conscious & politically oriented hip hop in general, and a few similar artists in particular...

"This political rap garbage needs to die out and it makes me happy to know this junk flopped... I've always hated Public Enemy, their music has always been dull, boring, and pointless... Paris and Sister Souljah also suck... This is nothing more but but stupid and idiotic bashing of the mainstream hip hop industry which there is nothing wrong with... This is typical political hip hop. Rants, slander, and completely moronic and asinine conspiracy theories... I usually respect an artist's political beliefs but not when they try to force it on the rest of us by making a whole album about it... It's simply the same B.S message that we've heard from Chuck D, Paris, and other similar and just as crappy artists. This is not entertaining, and there is no intelligence here either. It's just a collection of rants disguised as music and an attempt to cash in on the recent political climate... I've never liked any of this concious rap garbage that has come out and this is no exeption... This is just another attempt by the American lefts and the extremists in the hip hop purist movement to push their beliefs on the rest of us and to politicize music and entertainment in general even further... I'm glad to see that rap has gotten more commercial and less political... The state of the music industry makes me sick because instead of making records, these artists are more concerned about fighting for a bunch of lost and idioctic causes [my personal favorite >_~]... One of the worst groups ever. These songs are stupid and idioctic rants over a beat about corporations, cops, and the "system". Avoid this along with any other Public Enemy album because this political preaching non-sense are the worst things to happen to rap and music in general... Public Enemy has always been a bad group and Chuck D knows absolutely nothing about politics. He's a stupid conspiracy theorist who thinks he's some kind of rebel. [naww, actually THAT one is my personal favorite >_~]."

Viper on Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11...

"This film was nothing more than a stupid attempt to influence the last election and a sad shameless cash in on the 9-11 tragedy and the war in Iraq... He's the kind of person who could make Hitler look like a saint."

Annnnnnnd cut! - ok, print that. Whew! Viper: The word brings to mind venomous poison, the United 'Snakes' of America, corporations like Chrysler (Lee Iacocca) and what they all represent. Actually, and for the record, I think Viper is a beautiful person, in that he's openly honest about his current state of mind (albeit ignorant to the subject matter: reality) - letting us all know e-x-a-c-t-l-y where he's coming from. This type of openness allows me to clearly & quickly discern truth from lies, ignorance from knowledge & friend from foe. Imagine... if everyone you know or knew followed Vipers openly honest way of expression. You'd have no more tales of '10 Knives & One Back' to tell. At the very least, you'd see it come'n, yah know? I also understand that i'm just as weird to Viper, as he is to me - which is ok. Everybody has the right to be wrong, even if as you're reading this, your rights are rapidly diminishing. Hmmm... I wonder if Viper is aware of that fact. Are you?

Oh, and as for Paris's Hard Truth Soldiers Vol. 1 CD... well, if your looking for some truth, in the form of words with a beat - regardless of what others may naysay, yu'll find some here. If you're an aware individual, then think of HTS Vol. 1 as another piece of positive reinforcement to add to your existing arsenal - ready for those times when you really need the boost to fight the machine, re-establish your thoughts or combat the daily stream of 'ill programming' (Can't Break Me). n'In case you have no clue as to what i'm talk'n bout (just like our good friend, Mr. Viper), then write this down: 'HTS Vol. 1 - Clues found here!' There yah go. Now just take that to the record store. There's more then enough food for thought on this CD (a better mind meal found on Paris: Sonic Jihad). As with all humans, there are a few weaker moments on HTS Vol. 1 (yeah, one or two). None-the-less, it's more then worth the price of admission. Yah can't go wrong here peoples.

Politicized Junk.......2006-05-01

I've never liked Paris, he's always been a terrible producer and an even worse rapper. Every song on here sucks. MC Ren officially sold out when he hooked up with this clown. I respected Ren for helping overshadow this politicized garbage when he was with NWA and I frankly can't belive that he is helping them now. And Kam sold out too since his albums weren't heavily politicized either. These songs are boring, idiotic, and unlistenable with weak lyrics and wack beats and with distorted messages that only braindead idiots would listen to. This is one of the worst albums of the year.

Well how do I put this? Paris works well when he puts things in a political perspective and uses studio gangsters as a side target. On this album he seems more bent on bashing studio gangsters instead of giving you an album with social and political gems straight through. He seems a bit distracted but songs like these make this album worthwhile. Standout tracks: ITS REAL, ONE TIME FOR YA MIND, GUERRILLA FUNK, BRING IT TO YA(dynamite matchup with Conscious Daughters), OUTTA MY LIFE, WHATCHA SEE, BACK IN THE DAYS, 44 WAYS(Bonnie and Clyde type of joint) and STREET SOLDIER(rips pseudo gangsters a new one). Filler: None but I wish he could have put some extra verses on the extended versions of Its Real and Guerrilla Funk. Bottom Line: This album is not Paris at his politically best but its still a good album worth checking out. Also Recommended by Paris: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT(FIRE!!!), SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY(MORE FIRE!!!), and SONIC JIHAD(MORE FIRE!!!). Paris is the real underground legend.

Another Great CD by P-Dogg.......2006-08-11

Paris' music is both inspirational and very well put together. This is his most recent CD and it still packs the punch his other CDs do. Production is excellent and his lyrics are off the hook. All of his CDs are worth buying and if you don't have some stuff by Paris you need to get some.

WOW! GOOD STUFF HERE!.......2006-05-05

The CD is on point and Paris' brilliance shines through so beautifully once again. My favorite song on this entire CD is 44 Wayz. Why? It's respectfully raw. What do I mean by that? The respectful part is that it has an intimate feel because it shows a man and a woman in struggle together through thick and thin. The raw side is its content and the beats. WOW! It's a great song. The CD as a whole is fantastic! A very HIGH recommendation for purchase. I can assure you: you WILL get your money's worth.

The Paris Primer!.......2004-08-10

This was the album that introduced me to neo-political rap. It is a funky, socially aware treat that all wannabe "Prophets" of hip hop should hear before ever trying to "go there".

This album is as strange as its name, with absolutely no singing, just a bunch of rambling nonsense. And, for an album from 1971, it's peppered with about as many "f--ks" as any recent rap album. Avoid.
