I love this CD. The music is very uplifting. If you love Baroque Music then you can't go wrong with this CD. Great Price and Value.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13

I originally purchased this disc as an EMI Classics Red Line release (I think I paid $5.99 for it). It was a steal then, and remains so today on the Seraphin line (simple a reissue of the same EMI Red Line release).

Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).

This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.

This is a great feel-good record. Music to reign by.

The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

This CD is just a delight. If you enjoy Baroque, you will find this CD one of your favorites. It has a pleasant register and a lightness that is a pleasure to any ear. An excellent value.

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

I've made this small review of the Vivaldi Masterworks set because it is SO difficult to find a review of such a big collection.

The price is killer and you HAVE to buy it, but be warned: these are not the best recordings, you get what you pay for.

First of all, I'm not a Vivaldi expert, but I've heard his compositions throughout my life in so many different places and recordings and have a vague idea of how some have to be played. Secondly, I'm not a classical music connoisseur, but I love it and have over 300 discs of various composers and styles. Third, I know what a good audio recording should sound like and this will influence my critique of some discs in the collection. Finally, it's easy to get lost among all the tracks contained, so in some cases I will give you my favorite tracks in a disc.

I'm sorry, but I've only reached disc 20 of the box-set, as I listen to more this review will be expanded.


DISC 1:
Why would you use an AAD recording as a first impression for a 40 disc box-set and for the "Four Seasons", which is probably Vivaldi's best know work. The concertos are played enthusiastically, but lack any additional virtuosity to put it ahead of other much better recordings out there.

DISC 2:
Same as DISC 1, played and recorded by the same people.

DISC 3:
The pieces in this disc are VERY well played, nonetheless, you can hear heavy breathing from the soloist which can be a bit annoying.

DISC 4:
Very well performed as well, heavy breathing is less present.

DISC 5:
A very good recording, excellent execution by the hapsichord and good by the recorder.
Tracks 4, 6, 7 and the whole "La Notte" are extraordinary.

DISC 6:
Exquisitely recorded and performed by the Budapest Strings.

DISC 7:
Marvelous performance on the whole disc.
Tracks 22 & 24 are non-plus-ultra.

DISC 8:
Great performance too.
Suggested tracks: 7, 12, 15, 24

DISC 9:
To have an original baroque organ playing is a plus.
Solo strings are lacking in quality (for example: tracks 6 & 7).
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 8, 15

DISC 10:
Despite being and ADD recording, the quality is fairly good. The cello is very well played.
Suggested tracks: 3, 4, 12
Excellent track: 13

DISC 11:
Same musical group and soloist as DISC 10. The contrabass is extremely distorted sometimes, and if you take into consideration that this is an ADD recording, it can get pretty bad. Some background noise is perceived.
Suggested tracks: 3, 6, 9

DISC 12:
The compositions are somewhat boring, either way the performance is plain decent.
Suggested tracks: 10, 12

DISC 13:
Good performance and sound quality.
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 6, 7
Excellent track: 12

DISC 14:
Good performance and sound quality too.
Suggested tracks: 10, 14, 16
Excellent track: 5

DISC 15:
Badly mixed, the basoon is blocking the whole ensamble by being in the foreground.
The playing precision is lacking.
An AWEFUL thing about this recording is that you can hear the basson key-sticking with the instrument and the saliva. It's horrible.
Such a pity, the sound of the basson with other instruments can be pretty interesting.

DISC 16:
Violins sound a bit off tempo.
Suggested tracks: 4, 8

DISC 17:
Good sound quality and performance.
Suggested tracks: 1, 7, 9

DISC 18:
Despite being an old recording, it is a very welcome one.
The performance is very well above par. Tempo is fantastic.
The quality of the recording could have been better due to some string plucking that is heard and which can become bothersome.
These are some of Vivaldi's best know tunes.

DISC 19:
Lively recording.
Track 6 is the same piece found in another disc in the collection, but with a better performance.

DISC 20:
By now you've heard all of this pieces before in the other discs. Nothing new here, nor better.

If you are a fan at all of the Four Seasons you should love this music. I will admit right now that I am a classical music fan. I don't write or perform it. I am a novice listener. I have never taken any music lessons(though I am leaning in that direction) and certainly have not gone through any university music training. I started out in rock and roll but found classical as I got older and fell in love with it a few years ago.

With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are

The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance

This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!

If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me

So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion

This 40-cd collection affords me a rare pleasure almost daily: the thrill of hearing something new by Vivaldi. Despite my best efforts over the years, I've managed to miss hearing a lot of great works by the master. Listening to a single CD now and then, catching tunes on the radio... you can't possibly get a comprehensive understanding of Vivaldi's output that way.

But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.

Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.

No, I don't own this collection...yet. However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand. Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either.

I'm not qualified to put more than my uneducated opinion here, but I can get rather indifferent to Vivaldi's sometimes predictable Concerto developments and forms - but not this disc.
This gets played more than almost any other of my Vivaldi, except perhaps The English Consorts' 'Music for the Emperor' (and I do also like Biondi and Carmignola ripping their way happily through his concertos).
I can't put it down to the performance or the pieces, but from the stoccato beginning through to the end, this has something a little different - interesting and rather striking progressions.

Overall very satisfying. I feel like this is a distinct piece of Vivaldi rather than one of his variations on an earlier piece.

    I never thought I would like Bach's organ works as they can be dense and daunting. However, if you can get onto Bach's wavelength, he can transport you to an electric cosmos of beauty and enlightenment. I was given a collection of Bach organ LPs by Helmut Walcha some time ago. My friend said that Germans regard Walcha as the premier interpreter of this music. He certainly knows how to play the organ and this music soars in his hands. This music is more varied than most people imagine. Some is extremely simple and delicate while some crushes your brain! I have always loved Archive recordings and these did not disappoint!

    Helmut Walcha was named my TIME as "the" Bach interpreter for organ. I think that is true more than ever today with all the influences of the French Romantic school, the slam-dunk American style and the avant garde crowd. The recording has a German sound, quintessentially Teutonic in both style and approach. While Bach sounds different and even magnificient on an Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ it does not sound authentic - or as we perceive authenticity.

    The fact that the artist is blind(!) means that unlike other folks who can use the music as aids, he must rely on his phenomenal memory. This is truly the stuff of genius. The sonatas are brilliant and I have never heard a better B Minor Prelude & Fugue. I only with that his stupendous "Kunst der Fuge" could have been transferred from record to CD.

    This set of many Bach's Organ works by Helmut Walcha is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of these immortal treasures. There are almost all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for organ, as well as many fantasias, miscallenous works and his chorals for this instrument. Walcha plays with utmost respect to the original scores, his playing is clear and powerful. Many other organists have allowed themselves quite a bit of experiment with these pieces (likes of Ton Koopman are over the top), but in the end, i've always came back to Walcha's renditions. If you want to treat yourself with some of the greatest music ever written, then get this rare set! Bach's organ music can be challenging at first, especially the fugues, and many of my friends have complained that they hear nothing else than noise in these pieces. I suppose you have to have listened this kind of music for quite some time, before you can wholly appreciate these unique pieces. But once you have, you find a world full of riches and wonder, world which only Bach can bring you. And this is a world i wouldn't change for any riches in the world.

    It is hard to express in words what an incredible achievement this is. The immense feats of memory alone, demanding far greater efforts than sighted performers face, command our respect. So does the consistent quality of Walcha's playing.

    Bach's almost mathematical absorbtion with fugue lies at the centre of his genius. He was an organist first and foremost, an organist all his life. Like Bach, Walcha is an obsessive controller who uses music to shape his world. He treats each piece as a treasure to be cherished and burnished, and this makes him the greatest Bach organist since Schweitzer. We are told that Bach would travel miles to hear great organists perform, and Helmut Walcha is just such an organist as those.

    The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.

    I'm not a big organ music fan- maybe it's because it reminds this atheist too much of church! But the music here by Bach, and especially the playing by Walcha are just fantastic. I was dubious that I could find interest in 11 CDs of organ music, but I'm enthralled by every minute of each disc. A wonderful bargain!

    As someone who has followed Memphis Bleek's career, 534 was a welcome surprise. Simply put, the CD is better than you would think. While M.A.D.E. had a couple of decent songs, it was Bleek's first solo album in years and the rust showed. Jay compensated by throwing guest appearance after guest appearcance on the joint, making the LP seem both forced and cluttered. On 534, however, one begins to appreciate Bleek's potential.

    As much as I love it, "Dear Summer" hurts Bleek's cause. Fans want to see Bleek out of Hov's shadow, and while the God-MC's retirement was a welcome sight for Bleek fans, Dear Summer directly negates that progression. "Infatuated" was an over-the-top pop song but when separated from the hook, the lyrics were quite solid. Bleek mimics Jay's style a little bit in Infatuated, but that's representative of the whole LP; the deeper you get in to the track list, the more we see the real Bleek and the less we see Jay's influence. I thought "Like That" and "Oh Baby" were club bangers, but both were representative of the songs artists put out to perpetuate rap's sorry state today.

    "First, Last and Only," was when I thought, for the first time, we were on to something. The beat clearly sets the tone while Bleek and MOP spit bonafide BK heat. I thought this was one guest appearance that Bleek hit right on the nose; MOP was PERFECT for this track. "Alright," was my favorite track on the CD. Getting production from 9th Wonder and doing the song by HIMSELF, Bleek for the first time in his career, had me up out of my seat when I heard his delivery. You had a feeling that he really focused and I thought his rhymes were extremely crisp and well-written. I love the symbolism of the second-to-last track "All About Me," because as I said, we really begin see Bleek in his own light by the end of the CD. While 534 is not A classic in the least, Bleek fans have to be encouraged by the improvements since M.A.D.E. and should heavily anticipate his next solo LP. Well done, Memph Man; this was the surprise of 2005.

    Memphis Bleek is an emcee who is very consistent - too consistent for his own good. While Memphis has certainly never been a weak emcee, he's also never exactly reached any pinnacle of dopeness either. Poised as the heir to Jay-Z's throne has been a gift and a curse for Memphis; while his name is far more known to heads than if he was a struggling cat with no promotion, he's also been met with nearly impossible expectations. He will never be wack, but if you're comparing him to Hova, you've made a large mistake.

    The first track of this album gets things off to a very flimsy start with the title-track. When Bleek mentions the term 'no homo,' you maybe expecting Cam'ron or Juelz Santana to pop up at any moment. The next interlude is almost a break from the borderline-wack intro; a somber, soulful simple taken from a folk singer, which leads into the album's largest highlight; Dear Summer. Unfortunately for Bleek, the best track on the album doesn't show a trace of him anywhere. Produced by Just Blaze, Jay-Z, the mentor of Bleek, kicks some smooth rhymes over the jazzy music Blaze provides, and although this track is butter, it's a shame that Bleek once again got overshadowed by Jigga.

    Another thing, going back to the intro; Bleek often likes to utilize other rappers' catch-phrases, and even parts of their choruses. Throughout the album, he throws not-so-subtle references to songs by Juvenile, Notorious B.I.G., and even 50 Cent. It's really quite embarrassing to see Bleek even think about borrowing from 50.

    There honestly are some bad spots on this album, such as the aforementioned title-track, Infatuated, The One, Oh Baby, and Hater Free. The good cuts are decent or better, and although this is a eight-to-five ratio, it's still enough to warrant this a purchase. In a world where bling-bling rappers rule the charts, Memphis Bleek is a fresh of breath air in the mainstream; however, he doesn't really set himself enough from the Dipset crowd to stand out any further.

    Bleek has the potential to release a near-classic; he promises he will on his next release. I can only hope so, because even though I support Bleek, and would like to see him walk out of Jay-Z's shadow, he hasn't done anything to prove he ever will - let's just hope he does before he retire, or fades even further into obscurity.

    Honestly, when I got my hands on this the only reason I wanted to hear it was for Jay-Z. For the longest time I only listened to Dear Summer and just skipped over the rest. Recently, I patiently listened to the entire record and to my surprise it wasn't terrible at all. As a fan of Bleek, I feel like you should own this--for real. The material on this is everything you can expect from his best and then some. Is he well on his way of making people listen again? Record sells show this release wasn't helpfull in that. Give it another chance like I did, you might be surprised. Peace

    It's been over a year since Jay's departure, which means more opportunities for other Roc-A-Fella artists to come through, mainly "Memphis Bleek". Due to the fact that "Memphis Bleek" has always been considered as Jay's sidekick. Even though this album doesn't break through as a bonified classic, the album is still a step-up from "Bleek's" other releases. Most notibly, his most impressive works, since ("The Understanding") LP. The leading single ("Like That"), produced by "Swizz Beatz" is a real club banger and is an obvious choice to help push the album for more exposure. ("Dear Summer") has Jay-Z on a solo-tip where he addresses his fans about his retirement - once again (will he ever retire?). Don't let this album throw you off, because "Memphis Bleek" certainly holds it on his own with cuts like ("Smoke The Pain Away") and ("Alright"), both produced by "9th Wonder". "Just Blaze" also shows up for the ever-emotional cut ("Straight Path"). This album really shows that "Bleek" has grown and his maturity has been displayed.

    What's weird about this album is having another rapper (Jay-Z) rapping the second song of the album when Bleek himself isn't involved with the song at all, not producing not rapping not even in as a background vocalist... they definitly should have made Dear Summer a bonus track or sumthing becouse having it in a Memphis Bleek album makes no sense what so ever...

    Besides that this album is straight... not the best rocafella release by a longshot by Bleek lazed it no doubt... I don't think I skipped a single track (except for a lovesong)... from 534 to the last song it's pretty much good all the way through...

    Although I have nothing but the highest praise for this superb recording, featuring the amazing musicianship of Mr. Rubsam, the CD cover is awfully deceptive. The beautiful full colour picture on the front - even taken from a great angle - is of the exquisite Silbermann organ in Rotha, Germany. I assumed (naively, I suppose) that the organ pictured was the organ recorded. Unfortunately, such was not the case. The recorded organ is certainly beautiful - the glorious Flentrop in the chapel of Duke University, designed, I believe by Professor Fenner Douglass - but for those people (including myself) who were hoping for the entirely different and utterly magical spell of Bach's music on a Silbermann organ, this is not the CD. As majestic as the Flentrop is, it could never be mistaken for a Silbermann. Howbeit, if you would like to hear these incomparable organ works (most of them lovely chorale preludes) on a grand organ rather in the great Dutch tradition, then this recording could not be better. The spacious acoustics of Duke's chapel are masterfully recorded here, and the landmark Flentrop has probably never sounded better. I scarcely need to say that Mr. Rubsam is an astonishingly talented organist, who interprets these pieces flawlessly.
    In conclusion, if you were getting ready to buy this CD because you thought it featured a Silbermann, be forewarned - it is most certainly not a Silbermann. But if you would like to hear a great Flentrop superbly recorded and played, then I doubt you could find a better CD!

      This compilation of re-issues, originally recorded in the 1990s and 2001 features music, by Bach, Charpentier, Gabrieli, Schütz, Corelli (the famous beloved "Pastorale") and Praetorius, all of it beautiful and just right for celebrating a festival of light, hope, worshipful praise, and jubilation. It is performed to perfection by several period vocal and instrumental groups, the latter tuned to various "authentic" pitches. Some of the pieces are excerpts from longer works, some are arrangements, such as four lovely French Christmas carols in an instrumental version by Charpentier, whose harmonic and contrapuntal complexity makes the simplicity of the melodies all the more touching. There are also two reconstructions by Paul McCreesh of Christmas services as they might have been heard during Gabrieli's lifetime at Saint Mark's in Venice and during Schütz's lifetime at the Dresden Hofkapelle. The program is arranged for utmost contrast between vocal and instrumental textures, speed, length, mood and character. Among the highlights are the devout, fervent, quite melancholy "O Jesu me dulcissime" by Gabrieli, who wrote for voices with the same luminous brilliance as for brasses, and Praetorius' "In dulce jubilo," which, with fanfares of trumpets and drums, makes a fittingly triumphant, glorious ending. --Edith Eisler

      There are not many things in life that I would describe as just Gorgeous -- but this album is definitely one of them. The selections, the arrangements, the production quality, all are clean, yet lush -- simultaneously light and rich. The effect is wonderful.

      This may not appeal to hardest-core periodists, but for beautiful music lovingly performed, the album is very hard to beat. Not only rocketted to the top of my favorite holiday album list - it is already high on my favorite all-time list. It will NOT be getting put away with the rest of the Christmas albums. Year-round keeper!
