The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

Yes indeed Ladies and Gentlemen this has been another exciting episode of BRAT ROCK. The band itself is superb but the lyrics are left wanting with all the foul expletives and uber snotty attitude. Well I guess we should not throw everything out, but not all things can be saved with slick marketing and a set of professional handlers. Hey Avril what happened to your original band--those guys gave you an edge.

I looked up the songs from this album on youtube and listened to them. Avril, what were you thinking when making this album? She can't write songs for the life of her! They're terrible! Who's letting her make this run of the mill pop rock stuff? I mean the song "Girlfriend" was okay at best. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was just THERE. Sorry Avril fans but I have to give this a bad review. I give her credit for trying to be different or whatever but this album just doesn't cut it. I give this album an F!

Sort of disappointing. Different energy on this one, oh wait...she's happy now, and the music tells all. I enjoyed the fact that I could find solace in her music and curse men and the world all in one bitter lyric. We all can't be happy all the time and it seems it's getting harder to find people to sing about that. Oh well.

* I'm supposed to focus on the music, under the review guidelines. Having found little, I suppose I am free to focus on whatever I find more prevalent than actual music.

I listened to a few tracks of this, and had fun watching the video for Girlfriend.

Wasn't Avril Lavigne supposedly "anti-Britney", and supposedly "like Sid Vicious for the new generation" - when apparently, she didn't even know at that time who Sid Vicious was? That quote (in a 2002 Seventeen interview) links her to Punk.

She is an utter disgrace to Punk. She denies having ever said she was punk, but originally, she did say she was a skater-punk. Punk isn't about being a stuck-up motherf*cking princess (in her own words, no?). Punk also isn't about backtracking what you say about yourself/your music. But okay, maybe it's better to focus "on the music" instead, and not whether it's punk, or pop, or rock, or etc.

Music is supposed to come from the heart.

I suspect Avril Lavigne would be a lot less popular, if she didn't have her make-up, straight-ironed hair, and now preppy-wh*rish clothes (I wonder what her next makeover will consist of) - in glossy magazines, airbrushed album covers, and music videos where she indulges in being a "bad girl" (causing "trouble" in malls), and now seemingly, a bimbo (tell me how the hiphop, or whatever, dance scene at the end of Girlfriend, isn't "bimbotic", and how that doesn't make her like any other Britney/PCD/Beyonce out there).

However, if you do like Britneys and Rihannas, then go ahead and support the modern "music" industry!

PS: I'd give this album MINUS 10 stars, if I could.

A dreadful piece of "bubblegum pop" crap........2007-08-03

I've sampled/downloaded a good majority of the songs on this album. After having heard all the songs I realized that it was a complete waste of my time.

This crap is worse than even her first album. I thought Avril's second was a very nice improvement and it showed that she had some talent. But THIS is just plain horrible. "Girlfriend"? Please. It's completely unappealing and I believe that the only reason anyone over the age of 11 would like it is because it's got a "beat" to it.

That beat from "Girlfriend" is pretty much the same exact thing, more or less, in every other damn song on the record.

I would not recommend this CD to anyone except young girls... like, in the "tween" age.

Pop up.......2007-07-08

This, Avril's third album, is a bit more upbeat and a bit less angsty than her last attempt. As with both her previous albums, The Best Damn Thing is an album that I find best to cherry pick for the songs I like. With my five favorites from this album, there is enough material over her three albums to put together a pretty decent showing. But there are still 2-3 songs on this album that I won't ever listen to again.

A talented artist wasted........2007-07-06

The Best Damn Thing by Avril Lavigne is a sad and pathetic album. I liked Avril's Let Go and Under My Skin discs but her third album is as silly as the title itself. I think Avril has a wonderful, strong voice and an average songwriter but I don't know what has happened to her. I guess marriage softened her but this new bubble gum image and that blonde hair has got to go. She has so much talented and she's just throwing it away. It's so disappointing with lyrics like, "hey, hey, hey you I don't like your girlfriend, I think you need a new one..." Hopefully my little Candianan will knock it out of the park on her next album. Don't waste your time and money on this trash!

It grows on you.......2007-07-03

This is a different approach for Avril compared to her first two albums. It sounds like she has been listening to some Toni Basil, because there is a good bit of cheerleader like musicical influences in the sound she is putting out now. Combine that with the more raw punk attitude of the skate parks and a large amount of teen angst, and you get this album.

Originally I purchaed the censored version of this album, but realized I could not stand the censoring that was going on. The blanks in the singing just threw me off. Within two weeks of listening to the censored version, I ordered the uncensored one, and haven't gone back since.

All out fun power pop........2007-07-01

"Girlfriend" was logically the first single from this CD. It's the best. Yes, it's a throwback to that "Hey Mickey" stuff (although it rocks more) but I liked "Hey Mickey". Does every freakin song have to be serious? Can't we just have fun listening to music once in a while?

There are 4 or 5 tracks that could easily be singles on the CD and they probably will become just that. Her label will likely milk this for a few years.

Compared to her last two it's somewhat a mix of the styles. The more pop-oriented of her first and the harder-edged sounds of her second CD (which I didn't care much for).

It's kind of a nice mix. You don't get too much of either. :)

On the other hand, I much preferred her first CD so to me this is much like a return to that sound.

A few of the tracks are more "punk" than I like, but those same tracks will likely appeal to many of her fans.

If you like Avril, then you must buy this CD (however, you probably already have).

Though easily as consistent as their first two releases, it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' third release, Damn the Torpedoes, that catapulted Petty and company into the first rank of American rock acts. It's not hard to understand why. With a slate of driving songs destined to become FM staples ("Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "Even the Losers," "Don't Do Me Like That"), it's an album that plays much like half a greatest-hits collection. Fusing a rootsy sensibility heavy with Dylan and Byrds affectations with his own pop instincts (honed by early stints with Mudcrutch and Dwight Twilley) and coupling them with one of rock's most consistently underrated powerhouses, the Heartbreakers, Petty's throwback traditionalism oddly found him riding the crest of the new wave in the late '70s. Take a look at the album cover. That is one iconic shot of Tom Petty who, along with his band of Heartbreakers had started to take the music world by storm, not with something new but a good dose of the familiar melded with a good dose of their youthful exuberance, chiming guitars, and rocking attitude. Through an era known for disco, new wave, hard rock and punk, Petty's music sounded like a refreshing change and holds up, to this day alot better than any trend from 1979.

There is not a bad track on this album from perhaps their most enduring signature tune, "Refugee" to the great closing ballad "Lousiana Rain". In between you get the dreamy surrealism of "Even The Loosers", The catchy organ driven top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That", flat out rock and roll spirit of "Century City", "Complex Kid", "What are Your Doing In My Life", the melodic "Here Comes My Girl" and off course, "You Tell Me".

Simply some great rock and roll with southern tinge, spirited vocals chanelling punk and new wave but never straying far from the rock and roll and the bands roots, firmly planted in the 60's.

As the album reads almost like a Greatest Hits collection, it is by far the album to get if you enjoyed the Greatest Hits because you don't get better TPATHB as this, some albums come close, none are poor, yet none better this here one.

First blockbuster for TP&TH.......2006-08-15

PREAMBLE RAMBLE:
After years of hard work and struggle, and two pretty good early albums, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers experienced breakout on a massive scale with an album that still sounds fresh and energetic, more than 25 years later. Paired with Producer Jimmy Iovine, the band produced a sound that was a little bit punk, a touch of Dylan, a dash of Stones, a pinch of Byrds, and a whiff of Skynyrd...a sound that was all at once Florida swampy and California sunny.

THE SONGS:
Somewhere on a radio right at this moment, a discerning DJ is spinning a cut off of this album. Odds are, it could be the propulsive, urgent "Refugee," with it's brilliant couplet:

Somewhere, somehow, somebody musta kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away, and held for ransom?

Followed by the plea: "Honey, you don't have to live like a refugee!"

Which, in Petty's drawly, nasal twang...in phrasing as distinctive and brillant as Sinatra's...sounded something like this: "Hawney, yah doan ... ha-yuff...ta-live-lika-refugeeheeee!" It's all at once compassionate and defiant, and marked Petty as one of those vocalists who is immediately recognizable in any setting, with the ability to take any song and make it his own.

But the hits keep on coming on this album: the beautiful, but unsentimental mid-tempo "Here Comes My Girl," the edgy "Don't Do Me Like That," the bracing "Even the Losers" (who "get lucky sometimes"), and the tear-jerker, "Louisiana Rain," which are all classics in the Petty canon. I also should mention the scorching "Century City" and the Stones-y "Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)," which are also stellar tracks.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
This CD almost seems like a "Greatest Hits" complilation, rather than simply being one studio album. But, here is the sound of a great American band catching fire together...not only Petty, but the keyboard/organ brilliance of Benmont Tench and the guitar heroics of Mike Campbell and the rhythmic powerhouse of Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums). Super bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn even makes a valuable contribution here. It's a good reminder that Tom Petty, while truly an American rock icon, is even better when paired with his bandmates.

RECOMMENDATION:
Oh, yes, this is a must for any collection. It's the perfect blend of tough and tender rock and roll, and stands on a par with great works by other American icons like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, John Mellencamp, The Eagles, The Doors, R.E.M., The Byrds, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and The Allman Brothers. It is one of those works that defines an era, yet remains timeless in its appeal. Get it.

WORTH THE PRICE.......2007-05-12

If a CD has at least three good songs its worth buying and this CD has eight. If you like Ted Nuggent and the rock from the 80's and early 90's you'll like this CD. If you like good music that is well crafted you'll like this CD. If you like rock bands that can sing you need to get this CD.

This is still on of the best Rock n' Roll CD's out there. There is not a bad song on this disk or the follow-up "Don't Tread." These guys truly are a super group. Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades went on to make "My Hallucination" in 1995 witch is another great CD. Every true fan of the Rock Genre should own all 3.

Supergroup Of The Early 90's.......2007-01-08

Wow has it really been 16 years since this album came out? Damn Yankees was a "supergroup" project that put together Ted Nugent, Tommy Shaw (Styx), Jack Blades (Nightranger) and drummer Michael Cartellone for two albums of early 90's era heavy rock. The album spawned the huge hit ballad "High Enough" and it looked for a while as if this band were going to be really big. All 3 of the big name musicians pretty much get equal billing on this one with Shaw, Blades, and Nugent sharing lead vocal duties. Shaw sticks to rhythm guitar on this disc with Ted contributing most of the lead. This is not what I would call a great album, but there are some decent songs on it. "Runaway" is a good Tommy Shaw tune. The title track "Damn Yankees" is a fist pumping anthem, and Ted's finale "Piledriver" is pretty much what we have come to expect from the Motor City Madman. The rest of the songs on this disc are ok with rather juvenile lyrics and typical power rock instrumentation. Amazon has this CD listed used for .39 cents so if you have ever thought of checking it out you can get it cheap.

Good Stuff.......2006-09-27

Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, and Ted Nugent join up here to form the supergroup Damn Yankees. And it is awesome. The raw talent talent showcased here is also a stickler too. Their other pursuits such as Shaw's Styx, Blades' Night Ranger, and Nugent's solo. These guys proved that the arena rock style will never die as long as we don't let it.

A super group, Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, Jack Blades and Michael Cartellone. And it's pretty much worked! Ted brings out the redneck balls in his compadres and his more gunshy bandmates temper the Terrible Ted Motormouth Show.

Critically panned at the time of the release and nobody took them seriously yet this isn't a bad release and deserved better. Sure, some of it sucks big time but the lead cut - Coming of Age - is a decent H/R tune and Runaway rides a cool groove. With both Ted + Tommy in the band there is some wailing guitar work and check out Piledriver, where all sense of restraint and mainstream aspirations are tossed out the window to produce the albums most metallic moment.

This idea never reached fruition - perhaps due to the stampede of releases at the time, possibly due to the scheduling of the main protagonists and the aforementioned lack of truck with the critics in the relevant media outlets. As for the music, it's fairly stock standard stuff but at least properly played and with some sense of fun. You could do a lot worse. Tommy Shaw and Nugent fans really should get their hands on this curio from their respective heroes.

Do comebacks get any better than this?.......2006-07-29

Buddy Guy is one of my favorite blues artists, and this album is not only a fine comeback, but well deserving of the Grammy award it received in 1991. And with only 6 customer reviews here on Amazon so far of a grammy nominated album which has been on the market since 1991, I would say the album (and the artist) are grossly underappreciated.

One of my favorite songs on this album is the eponymously titled "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues"....right off the start Buddy shows he still has the strong voice, guitar work and the song writing. Another favorite which I hit repeat button many times when listening to is the instrumental "Remembering Stevie"....again, if this does not show a bluesman who hasn't lost his touch one bit, I don't know what will. Simply fantastic.

Hearing his version of "Black Night" is eerie when one remembers older versions of the same song such as the one sung by Muddy Waters in the 60's. Instead of using Vietnam though, Buddy interchanges Iraq, showing us that the blues have a timeless purpose to serve.

I love Buddy's Chess years....those are some of the best blues ever in my opinion. But this album is also excellent in its own right, and certainly deserves more notoriety than it (he) receives.

Highly recommended.

Buddy Guy Has The Kind of Blues We Want.......2006-05-20

Buddy Guy was a guitar legend before the release of Damn Right I've Got The Blues, but when this great record was released in 1990, he has been at the blues forefront ever since. This record proves that the forefront is where Guy belongs.

Cuts like "Where Is The Next One Coming From," "Too Broke To Spend The Night," and the poignant tribute to his friend Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Remembering Stevie," serve notice that Guy not only hasn't lost anything, but still has plenty to teach the younger crowd.

But by far, the title card is the most memorable. This is the kind of song that Buddy could play at the beginning of every concert for the rest of his career. Burning runs and milking every ounce out of every note, Guy grabs the listener and never lets go.

These are the kind of blues that all music lovers need. The expanded re-release is welcomed if for no other reason than to remind all of us that Buddy Guy is a superstar.

Buddy Guy is an living legend, with his self titled grammy award winning Damn Right, I've Got The Blues. Buddy represent's so much of his guitar playing ability, and enthusiasm on this 1990 grammy award winning album. Buddy influenced so many guitar legends including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, and many more. You will love the first song with those ringy notes coming right out of buddy's amplifiers titled Damn Right, I've Got The Blues. As you listen to through the album you will encounter pure enthusiasm including his 8 minute rendition of Five Long Years which is incredible. Their are classic old blues songs also provided on this Damn Right, I've Got The Blues Expanded Edition including Trouble Dont Last, and Doin' What I Like Best. Buddy Guy is one of the few blues musicians who tries to carry on the blues legacy which I greatly respect. You wont have to listen long to this album to realize how great Buddy Guy really is. With his excellent tribute rendition of Rememberin' Stevie wrote after SRV stevie ray vaughan died of a tragic helicopter crash in 1990. Buddy has nothing unreal about him................he is all about the BLUES~ Highly Recommended!

Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, who were protegés of Frank Loesser, composed and wrote lyrics for only two hit shows of their own--The Pajama Game was the other. (Ross died in 1955, shortly after the opening of Damn Yankees.) But what great shows they were, in sensibility and subject matter entrenched in their Eisenhower era, yet eminently revivable today--and as much more than period pieces. Damn Yankees, which was based on Douglas Wallop's novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, neatly combined the national obsession with baseball and its dominant team with the Faust legend. The Devil himself (Ray Walston) offers a middle-aged fan of the Washington Senators the chance to turn into a Mickey Mantle-esque ballplayer (Stephen Douglass) to help his hapless team against those Bronx Bombers. The fan accepts, but with an escape clause in the interest of story-line complications. What makes the plot problematic is not its proven fantasy level; it's that the leading lady, Lola, the Devil's temptress assistant, doesn't appear until way into the first act, and then she is required to dominate the show with just two solos and a couple of duets. Only a star with the guts and stage-holding ability of Gwen Verdon could have managed this in the first place, even though her solos are the estimable "A Little Brains--A Little Talent" and the near-standard "Whatever Lola Wants." Bebe Neuwirth, as Lola, was never able to seize the stage--or the recording--of the 1994 revival, and ultimately that show became about Jerry Lewis as the Devil, for God's sake. Verdon's and Walston's amazing original performances are preserved in the movie version (Tab Hunter took over the ballplayer's role), but this recording is the one to have. The show's breakout hit song, sung by ballplayers and fans, was and is "(You Gotta Have) Heart." Damn Yankees and all its songs have just that. --Robert Windeler

So, I just bought this version, after owning the revival cast, and being in it recently. There are definitly good things about this recording. The music is beautiful and Old Joe has a beautiful voice. Also, Joe Hardy is better on this recording than the revival. Unfortunately Lola is not the greatest in this cast, I much perfered the revival's Lola. SO which version should you get? Collectors, should get both, people who perfer a more classical musical theater should get this version. Other than that, the new version, is better, and a better value. Favorite Song: "Goodbye, Old Girl"

I'd Forgotten How Much I Loved this Musical.......2006-07-27

You may have seen the movie like I did, you may have seen Damn Yankees performed in summer stock theater like I did, but the original Broadway cast recording is outstanding. I used to listen to it a lot since my father had the album and introduced me and my siblings to musicals in the 50's. The songs and artists were better than I remembered from the LP. If you like the old classic musicals, you'll love this CD. I don't mind at all that it isn't in stereo-it's just wonderful the way it is. I have since ordered the movie from Amazon!!! Just the title alone will entice any Red Sox fan like me--too bad the Washington Senators were the subject team and not the Sox.

I ordered the DVD of Damn Yankees to watch on TV for my daughter because she is doing a play and needed it for the day I ordered it. I paid for fast delivery because she had a deadline and we were thrilled to receive it on time but was very disappointed to see that it was the CD of only music! I don't think I will order from Amazon again, it was my first time and probably my last.

DAMN YANKEES! is a fun show. Not one of the very best ever written - the plot s full of holes - but still a great deal of fun on stage.

The Adler-Ross score holds up well, though the ballads get a bit dreary. "Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants" were the big hits but Ray Walston's "Good Old days" and the duet "Two Lost Souls" are enjoyable.

RCA Victor did the cast album, taping the whole score (except the song "Not Meg" which was cut after opening night never to be heard again) and including some dialogue. The album is slightly marred by the flat boxy sound that pervades most of the label's early cast albums. Still it preserves the performances of Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston.

They also appeared in the 1958 film version with Tab Hunter replacing Stephen Douglas as the star ball-player. The soundtrack album (also on RCA) makes changes to the lyrics and drops three songs, adding a new ballad "There's Something about an empty Chair" that is even more dreary than the song it replaces.

The 1994 Broadway revival (on Mercury) offers a more thorough recording, but the performances on this original cast disc can't be beat.

So begins one of Broadway's most delightful (and successful) musical offerings of the early 50's, DAMN YANKEES, based on the popular novel 'The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant' by Douglass Wallop.

With its immortal, zippy score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, the musical starred the legendary triple-threat Gwen Verdon (in her first leading role following her debut in CAN-CAN) and also featured Ray Walston as the snide 'Devil in Disguise' Mr Applegate.

The cast includes Stephen Douglass (THE GOLDEN APPLE) as well as Rae Allen, who sings the show-stopping "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, Mo.". Gwen Verdon, in the role of scene-stealing seductress Lola, gets several choice numbers including her now-legendary "Whatever Lola Wants", as well as "A Little Brains, A Little Talent", "Who's Got the Pain?" and "Two Lost Souls". Shannon Bolin (PROMENADE) sings the plaintive cry for attention, "Six Months Out of Every Year".

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I was very excited when i found this Lp at my local record store since ive always been curious since i heard them featured on Gangstarr's Lp's.
I always liked the way they flowed but they just didnt bring it like i thought they would.

They just didnt stamp the Lp with any memorable songs or Anthems. Now dont write me off as some commercial, Top 40 doushe, because that couldnt be farther from the truth.I just dont think they lived up to bar they set for themselves.

One of the best Hip Hop Cd's of the 90's.......2007-01-22

The first time I heard Nice and Smooth's "Hip Hop Junkies" I was 13 and it was the hottest thing playing. A lot of people in mainstream America hadn't heard of Nice and Smooth. It wasn't like they were on MTV everyday (I don't recall ever seeing them in a video except for a song they did with Gang Starr a few years later). Anyway, "Hip Hop Junkies" is a terrific song, and when it came out the sounds were different from a lot of the other rap that people were listening to. At a time when most of the rap people were listening to in the street was gangsta-style rap, this song had a style that was pretty universal. The one thing about Nice and Smooth that I like is that they know how to come up with hooks. I see everybody here giving a lot of praise to a track called "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" but that song didn't catch on in my neighborhood (Jamaica, Queens-where such rappers as LL Cool J, Onyx, and 50 Cent came from). One song that I like from this album that didn't get the same attention as "Hip Hop Junkies" but which was also popular and which everyone thought was one of the best track in this CD is "How To Flow."

Short and Sweet.......2006-08-03

Though it is only 12 tracks, this is one of the best rap CDs I have ever heard. Both rappers have a great chemistry with each other on the mic, and the production is also great. You may have heard Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, and if you liked that song, then you will probably like the whole CD. Definately worth it for such a low price.

This whold CD is great. The best song may be the single "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow", but all of the songs are great. I love this CD and if you buy it, I know you will love it also.

Get the two CDs they put out instead.......2005-12-23

Damn Yankees did two great CDs in 1990 and '92. It seems to have done something for Tommy Shaw's songwriting...unlike one other reviewer seems to think, Styx has grown into an honest to God ROCK AND ROLL band ande Dennis DeYoung is touring with a full-blown symphony orchestra (not to take anything away from his considerable talent, they just didn't want to be playing "Babe" the rest of their careers, and Lawrence Gowan seems to have injected some adrenaline there...and they all get along, more than you could say seven years ago). This is a good starter kit...but you're best off just getting the two CDs and finding the soundtracks to Nothing But Trouble and Encino Man for the songs "Bonestripper" and "You're Invited But Your Friend Can't Come" (essentially Vince Neil singing with Damn Yankees backing him). That's everything that's been released aside from a live video "Uprising"...go looking and enjoy!

PS: They saved the best track for last..."Silence is Broken" is a very powerful song that will bring chills to anyone that's ever been in any kind of abusive relationship, and needs the courage to stand up and say "enough"...one of Tommy Shaw's finest pieces of work, intense and emotional and has plenty to say. That alone is worth the price of admission!

Great stuff, but come on they only had two disks. Just get them both for Pete's sake. To act like this is all you need as some reviewers state makes me wonder how you'll love all of these songs and still wake up feeling good in the morning knowing that you are missing awesome rockers like Uprising, Rock City USA, and Livin This Side of Hell.

If You Own...........2004-08-06

If you already own "Damn Yankees", and "Don't Tread" CD's, there is no need to buy this "Best Of" release. If you don't own either of the CD's, this has all the songs you will need. It would have been nice, (in this compilation), if there was something new that didn't make it to either original CD's. That is why I'm only giving this CD, 3 stars. To bad Ted, Tommy, Jack & Michael didn't give us another release. If or when they ever do, crank up this or either of the only 2 original CD's, and enjoy true American musicians, doing what they do best...playing good solid kick ass rock & roll!

Better than I thought.......2004-01-25

I would consider myself a "radio" Damn Yankees fan, having only heard their radio hits like, "Don't Tread on Me," and, "High Enough." After hearing this Essentials CD though, I see that there's more than meet's the ear. The only song on here that I can't seem to get into is, "Come Again," but all the others are real rockers for me. From the milder, "Silent is Broken," to the fast and heavy, "Piledriver," this CD never stops! The guitars, vocals, bass, and drums, all rock. I tend to give conservative ratings, so that's why I gave this a 4 out of 5 stars, but otherwise, I would highly recommend it for any other "radio" fans like myself.

I must say...instead of buying both Damn Yankees CDs...save yourself some $$$$ and buy this compilation instead....all of their best are here..High Enough, Come Again, Where you goin now, Runaway, etc. I definitely recommend this for any "Yankees" fan!!!

LOVE THE CD, BRAND NEW AND REMINDS ME OF WHEN I SAW THE CLOSING SHOW WITH JERRY LEWIS ON BROADWAY. THE PRICE WAS GREAT AND SO WAS THE SERVICE. THANKS A BUNCH FOR A GREAT CD

Unfortunately its true, the Damn Yankees revival took many, many liberties and changed quite a bit of the show. However I happen to like this recording better. "Near To You" as a three way song, is AMAZING. Its worth it just for that song. I'll say the original Old Joe, was better than on this recording, but this recordings Lola is better. So, get both, I did. If you can only choose one though, I would go with this one. The orchestra is so much fuller. Favorite Song: "Near To You"

Worth Buying Just for Jarrod Emick's Thrilling Vocals.......2006-02-19

Okay. Maybe this 1994 revival of Faust in the baseball world isn't as revered as the 1950's original featuring Gwen Verdon. But it has sterling sound quality and is one of the few cast albums that almost allows you to understand the story just via the songs.

It's also a must buy due to the vocal pyrotechnics of Jarrod Emick. Emick's range and power are stunning. He literally blasts onstage as the younger incarnation of Shoeless Joe Jackson. In later numbers ("A Man Doesn't Know," the gorgeous multi-part "Near to You") his voice is quiet, controlled and unique. He sounds like no one else.

I saw the show during its initial release and left the show a fan for life. It's one of those rare times in the theater (seeing Idina Menzel in "Wicked" was another) where someone or something comes out of left field and makes you say "wow." This person is an astounding talent. He seems able to hit just about any note - high or low - and like Menzel can raise goosebumps. He's about to hit Broadway again in the Johnny Cash musical review "Ring of Fire." He should be a HUGE Broadway star and recording solo albums of his own. Why he's not is a mystery.

Bebe Neuwirth fares less well in her comic turn as Lola. While an amazing dancer and great comic actress, her comic faux Latin accent spoils the big "Whatever Lola Wants" number. This may have gone over well in 1950's America. But it's borderline offensive now.

Vicki Lewis, prior to her sitcom days, plays a reporter and delivers a rousing "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal Mo." Her energy and comic timing are impressive. I found her singing impressive. Victor Garber's devil keeps the plot moving along. But it's Emick's performance that keeps the show centered.

Yankee Fan - and Loved It Anyway.......2005-06-16

I saw the musical back in 1994, and met the stars of the show as well. Jarrod Emmick was one of the most gifted newcomers to broadway that I had seen in years, with a voice that could lift a house off the ground. I remembered Victor Garber from years ago, when he was in the movie, "Godspell" - I have his autograph on my tape of the soundtrack, in fact. I also had this album on tape, signed by the principals, but I can't seem to find it - it seems to be lost somewhere. At any rate, I'm not too upset - I still have the cover, which has the cast signatures on it. I intend to purchase the CD, since I don't think they sell tapes anymore. It was a wonderful show, and I deeply cherish the soundtrack which, for me, preserves the wonderful memories I have of the show and the people in it that I met. I would highly recommend it - especially if you were lucky enough to have seen the show.

Sorry -- didn't see the musical. (I'm a Yankee fan!)

I just wanted to clarify the angst over Joe (apparently) circling the bases during his transformation back to a middle-aged man -- rather than catching the final out.

Or at least give an explanation.

In the original novel, Joe DID hit a HR. However, while he was circling the bases, he began transforming back to his mortal self. Gasping and wheezing, Joe crawled his way across home plate.
