Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

Amazon.com essential recording

Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. On Evita's "Another Suitcase, Another Hall" and Cats' "Memory," she literally chirps through the vocal lines. No matter. The growing legion of Brightman fans wouldn't have it any other way. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection.......2007-01-05

Sarah Brightman has always been a favorite of mine, and this CD is outstanding. The duet with Jose Carreras (Friends for Life) is especially good--worth buying the CD for that song alone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best You'll See from Sarah.......2006-09-09

This CD is - wow! I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song". It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations. Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some. I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats. WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat. Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history. A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting. Macavity is AWESOME! I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to! My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday". Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together. Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato! Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium. THIS CD IS AMAZING! If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.

I also recommend Charlotte Church - (in her earlier career) - including Voice of an Angel and her self-titled album. I also recommend Love Changes Everything - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection Vol.2 - just another grouping of Webber's classics. I also recommend Andrea Boucelli - he's awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The Angel of Music.......2006-03-13

This is the third copy of this I've purchased. I wear them out listening to them. Awesome, Awesome music. Sarah's range and depth is so powerful!

3 out of 5 stars Unexpected disappointment.......2007-06-29

I was very upset to find out after buying the CD that the very first song isn't even the whole song--just a couple of lines. I basically bought this CD for that song!!! Besides that, it's a great CD with wonderful music--just wish they would have been more upfront with the song selections.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually deep, worshipful, and real.......2007-05-14

Aaron has impressed me with the depth of meaning in his lyrics, which pair up beautifully with truly enjoyable music. I put him in the same category of Christian music for depth and meaning as Steven Curtis Chapman and Steve Green. I'm so proud of him for using his talent for God's glory, and it's especially neat to see as he graduated a few years behind me from the same small Christian college. You really will enjoy this if you want something more than superficial catchiness to your worship experience. Proving all of this is multiple Dove award nominations and three actual Dove Awards. Plus, he writes his own stuff. Enjoy!! His second album is coming out soon (as of this writing May 13), and you can preorder an autographed copy on his website!

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2007-04-16

I recently heard Aaron Shust in concert when he was warming up for Audio Adrenaline and MercyMe. I was very impressed.

Prior to that, I had only heard one of his songs, 'My Savior, My God'. It is a terrific song of praise. After hearing him sing several more of his songs, I decided to buy this album. It is well worth it.

There are several other songs on here that are very good. 'Glory to You' is a very catchy that you might just catch yourself singing well after you are done listening to the album. Other very good songs on this CD include the following: Matchless, Stillness (Speak To Me), and One Day.

Lyrically, this album is definitely about God and the focus is on him. There is not much here about struggles or complaints. It is very praise oriented.

There are two songs on this that seem to have excellent potential, but they are far too short - 'Give Me Words' and 'In Your Name'. I think both of them could be made into really good full length songs and I hope that Aaron considers doing that.

I would definitely recommend this CD. If you haven't heard much of his music, you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

3 out of 5 stars Was hoping for better.......2007-04-10

I guess I had higher expectations, some songs just didn't seem to be very well written

4 out of 5 stars "Aaron Shust sure to be a definite favorite" by BJ.......2007-04-09

As soon as I heard his song "Matchless" on the radio about one-and-a-half years ago, I knew that whoever it was singing the song was a soon-to-be artist in my CD collection. The lyrics of his songs (which are mostly written by himself) are truly inspiring, and his vocal talent is outstanding. Ninety percent of the songs are great if not excellent, especially "My Savior My God", a national #1 hit.
"Give Me Words" is just a simple cry from the heart: 'Give me words to speak / Don't let my spirit sleep / 'Cause I can't think of anything worth saying' / and that's the whole song.
Next comes "Glory To You", another favorite, which is faster tempo-wise than "Give Me Words" and funner to sing to.
"Matchless", the first song I heard from Aaron, is fantastic. The verses just say a lot of the names that God is, while the chorus is something new and fresh.
"Let The People Praise" is slower, but really shows off Aaron's voice (like every other song).
The rest of the songs are pretty much the same kind of thing, but the last couple songs (excluding "My Savior My God") can get lost in the mix. However, this project is an excellent debut, and his highly recommended.

Album Description

MSI's music is a hybrid of Atari driven electronics with a venomous splash of ADD punk rock. There are three different versions of this release: a 10 track explicit version with a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything", an 11 track clean version with a video of "Diabolical", and an 11 track extra heavy double vinyl version. The clean and vinyl formats have two entirely different bonus tracks and all three have their own individual artwork, so true collectors will think nothing of owning them all. "MSI are, to me, how punk rock should sound in the 21st century: abrasive, brilliant, and sounding like no one else"--Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly). "...one of the most creative and genre-swirling outfits on the scene"--Serj Tankian (System Of A Down).

5 out of 5 stars Dang, shut up and like it will ya?.......2006-07-25

Okay.... gotta say it... SHUT YER COMPLAINING ABOUT THE 'TIME TOTAL' OF THIS RECORD!!!!! You are all giving me a headache! Now, lets talk about HOW GREAT THIS ALBUM IS!!! Its what got me into MSI. Before I heard them, I DIDNT EVEN LIKE MUSIC. But when I took this cd from my friend and downloaded it to my comp, I literally fell in 'like'. Sure, it took me a few listen(s) to really get into it ((regarding the fact that I never really listened to a specific band before)) but ever since, I cant stop obessing! 'Shut Me Up' (the first song) is rawsum and to this day I can still listen to it twenty or more times in a row.

So, basically, this must be a GREAT/AWSOME/RAW album if someone like me ((like one of the pickiest people out there)) got into it. MSI is truly an addiction for me. After listening to them, I got FGWSSS, Straight to Video Single, and most of their other songs from cds like 'Tight' you cant find in most stores. Heck, Im listening to 'Thank God' right now. In fact, the other day I went to their concert!!!

All in all, if you are looking for something disturbingly freaky and original you can find it with MSI. Check this cd out dispite what other 'picky' people say. Who cares, I WOULDNT BE WRITING A REVIEW IF THEY WERENT THIS GREAT!!!!

1 out of 5 stars this band sucks.......2006-07-11

my god what has the world come too....this bad is so called unique...hell thats becasue they suck worse than anyone else before them....total insult to rock/metal. This is pop.

If you like the whole new wave electro rock thing than listen to The Faint instead. Similar style of music without the crappy vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Great album but very poor and underhanded marketing!.......2006-03-12

I'll break this review in to three parts. First, the review of the album itself. Second, the review of the tactics used by MSI and Metropolis Records to sell this album. Lastly, my advice on getting everything that should have been included on one album.

1. The review of the album:

Simply put, if you like previous MSI albums, Babyland or stuff like Korn you'll eat this up. It's another top notch hybrid electronic, punk/metal, lofi quasi-hip hop, quasi-post-industrial genre-bending album. I suppose this would have fallen in to the label "coldwave" circa mid-90's post-industrial labeling. It's not exactly coldwave, not exactly anything other than the sum of its influences, which seem to be mainly hip-hop, post-industrial and punk/metal. The highlights of the album are definitely "Shut Me Up" and "Stupid MF", although there isn't really a weak track here. Another bonus is a positively weird cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer". Be sure to put the CD in your computer as there is a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything" (it's a neat collage of old 50's propaganda footage mixed with weird cartoons, vintage stock film interspersed with just general weirdness.)

2. Commentary about questionable gouging of consumer by label/band:

There is absolutely no reason for there to be three different versions of this album except to rip off the consumer. Period. In an interview Jimmy Urine said they released a clean version for people who couldn't buy the album in places like Wal-Mart. Who cares about Wal-Mart? For someone so outspoken and inspired by punk, it bothers me that he'd cave to pressures to release an edited version of anything, let alone an entire album. That leads me to believe it wasn't an effort to cater to the imbeciles who buy music at Wal-Mart but rather a flimsy excuse to release a different version of the album, with different artwork and different bonus tracks.

When I used to buy a lot of electro/industrial (circa mid-90's) I remember this type of crap burning the hell out of me. I'd buy the import of a particular artist (say, someone like Haujobb) and then a year or so later a domestic version would come out with bonus tracks. And it'd cost LESS to boot! So all the "early adopters" and people on the cutting edge would get burned over and over. I can't tell you how many CDs I bought like that when I used to buy a lot of obscure electro/industrial music. It's a trick in order to separate you from your money, nothing more. If they cared only about exposing underground music to a new audience then they'd simply license the album and release it exactly as it was originally in Europe. But I digress.

3. My advice:

Buy this explicit version, then download the bonus tracks "La-Di Da-Di" (bonus track on vinyl) and "Mic Commander" (bonus track on clean version) off teh intarweb and say fsck you to Metropolis Records/MSI for forcing us to buy three versions of the same album in order to get two extra tracks, different artwork and a bonus video (the clean version of this album has a "bonus rehearsal video for 'Diabolical'"). Alternately, if you feel like giving MSI more of your hard-earned money, you can at least get the track "Mic Commander" on iTunes Music Store by itself.

In summation, MSI are a great band and if you like punk, electro-industrial, metal with electronic influences (Fear Factory), hip-hop, nu-metal, coldwave/aggro-industrial (Ministry) then you'll probably totally dig this album.

Also, check out Jhonen Vasquez's video for "Shut Me Up" on myspace (or just do a google search for it). The ex-Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Squee/Invader Zim/etc. mastermind pulls off one of the funniest videos in a long time.

One of the leaders in the trend of big splashy revivals in the late 1980s and early '90s, Lincoln Center's 1987 production of Anything Goes was the perfect evocation of the 1930s, from the period pit band to James McMullan's striking poster art to the large photograph of Cole Porter that smiled over the stage like an approving spirit. While the score earns its share of authenticity by resurrecting numerous songs from the original score, it also tosses in a few ringers such as "Friendship" and "It's De-Lovely." (Porter himself did not mind when people staging his shows borrowed songs from his other shows.) Then-rising star Howard McGillin sings sweet ballads and the ensemble numbers are excellent, but the show belongs to Patti LuPone, who in the role of Reno Sweeney grabs the baton from Ethel Merman and never lets go. Her "I Get a Kick Out of You" is one of the great performances of her generation, and the title tune and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" make almost every other song sound like filler. LuPone was upset in the Tony race by Joanna Gleason, but the show did win for Best Revival. The booklet includes full lyrics, synopsis, production notes, and photos. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars This Sound Track is Ship-Shape.......2006-07-26

What can one say? It's Cole Porter.
OTOH, I *bought* the CD because it features all the songs for Anything Goes, which I've been cast in. So for several days it was ALL I listened to. [We're also learning our tap routines to this sound track.] I haven't run screaming from the car yet.
Solid, entertaining, recording -- recommended without caveat.

5 out of 5 stars Not Anything But One of the Best .......2006-06-28

I have heared many recordings for Cole Porter 's " Anything Goes ", but I like this one the best. The opening song is a historic and rare recording by Cole himself. This CD is a revised version of this song that was played in Lincoln Center in New York. Pattie LuPone has a truly beautiful ,strong yet sentimental voice. I highly recommend it

5 out of 5 stars A REAL CLASSIC!.......2006-06-16

A real classic from the authorship of a B'way legend. A work like this has great relevance because it stands as a wonderful recording for one of the greatest classics of the musical theatre of all times. Voices and orchestrations are wonderful. The title song sounds great in the voice of Patti LuPone. A cultural treasure to keep and listen over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars revival is quick and snappy.......2006-03-22

This recording strums along with a quick pace and Porters tunes are alive with energy and excitement. Patti Lupone can be a little harsh for some but she does the tunes justice. Its got some dance orchestration , but still missing most the dance sequence as most cd's do.

3 out of 5 stars Some bits are great, but others are mediocre.......2006-01-27

This is the only version I've heard of Anything Goes, and I think the sound is fine and Lu Pone is perfect as Reno, but some bits of this I just want to skip while I'm listening to it. I really think it's worth buying, because some of the songs are fantastic, but I feel that some of the other songs just weren't meant to be sung like this. I like Howard McGillin at the beginning, especially in 'You're the Top', but when he starts to sing all the romantic songs, he turns all sappy. This would normally be good, but it's like a sickening sappy. It happens with Anne Francine too. One moment she'll be singing with this great voice, and then go all high-pitched with an over-acted sweetness. Seriously, a shiver ran down my spine the first time I heard her sing 'Goodbye, Little Dream', and not a good shiver either.
Buy this if you want to, because it's still a great CD, but don't expect too much from anyone but Patti Lu Pone. Is there anything she can't do?

This double record from 1972 remains the definitive collection of Rundgren's long career. With Rundren acting as a one-man-band for three-quarters of the session, it was also his bid for a Ph.D. from the college of musical knowledge. He deserved the degree for simply writing the lead-off track, "I Saw the Light," a melodic pop-rock gem that remains Rundgren's greatest hit. Rundgren excels at Beatles-esque pop-rock ("Couldn't I Just Tell You," "Wolfman Jack") and Philadelphia-styled soul ballads ("It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," "Hello, It's Me"). He also sticks his toe into heavy metal ("Black Maria"), jazz-rock fusion ("Breathless"), and cerebral pop ("The Night the Carousel Burnt Down"). Like most double albums, there's fat on the play-list, but the best of Something/Anything gave credence to Rundgren's boast of being a wizard and a true star. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars What's more to say? TR is a GENIUS........2007-07-22

I've been a Todd fan for....37 years now and though I've been away from his light for a few years, I am in the process of re-discovering his music. ALL HIS MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD! We can debate pros and cons of this and that, but the simple fact remains that EVERYTHING he puts out is "city in my head" preciously supurb. You can pick any cd...go ahead...pick something/anything...and you'll see what I mean. A lot of what he does in the solo masterpieces he does all by himself...vocals, instruments, production, treatments. And Utopia is so very, very excellent. What more to say?

5 out of 5 stars something/anything What a talent!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

I recently bought a Bonnie Tyler CD(super hits) because I loved a couple of her songs(Bright eyes,I'm holding out for a heroe)which by the way is terrific.Every song was great but I loved her duet with Todd Rundgren. I searched the internet for Todd Rundgren and fell in love with him. He is probably the most talented man in the music business. He does it all. I am buying everything he has ever done. The man is amazing.!!!! I went to the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida recently and I can understand why they have a wall dedicated to him. My dream would be to meet him to tell him how wonderful he is. DEBBIE

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-08-06

An amazing double album by , at the time, a very young Todd. An interesting variety of songs. Todd can rock, he can croon, he can play bubble gum, he can jam, he can harmonize, he's got soul. "Hello it me" was a fav when I was young and it is still way up there today.

It so wrong that this ultra talented musician, song writer, performer, producer, and chance taker is not in the rock and roll hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars excellent double album.......2006-05-23

todd rundgren really proves to be great in many different areas on this double album. he dabbles in a bunch of musical styles, writes some great songs with great melodies, produces everything, he's a one man band, he's a band leader, he's a one man carole king album, he gets heavy, and does some pretty weird experiments. one man... doing all of that! wow! listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THAT TODD.......2006-03-23

Todd Rundgren is definitely one of the best songwriter's ever. Pop, rock, jazz...the man can write anything. This double album is awesome and one of his best. Besides the obvious hits, Wolfman Jack is rockin' as is Black Maria. I recommend it.

Originally released in 2004 on a small So-Cal indie label, Say Anything's ...Is A Real Boy has stood the test of time thanks to its universal themes and whopper punk hooks. Emo in name only, it is a disc that veers far away from the genre's typical navel-gazing lyrics and shines its light on the trappings of rock stardom, taking on everything from groupies to music snobs in no-nonsense songs like "An Orgy of Critics" and "Every Man Has A Molly." Max Bemis may not be a great singer but he's a great frontman, channeling his well-publicized struggles with bipolar disorder into songs that ring with defiance. This package includes a bonus second disc that includes seven new Say Anything tracks, a number of which delve even deeper into Bemis' psychiatric troubles, plus the somewhat self-explanatory "I Will Never Write An Obligatory Song About Being On The Road And Missing Someone." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

This version contains a bonus disc with seven unreleased tracks.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-15

After loving "Alive with the Glory of Love" I was so disappointed. The rest of the songs are completely forgetable. This album is trying way too hard. They want to sound original and put everyone else down for watching MTV or liking some mainstream bands but they are completely unconvincing as the new independent-thinking band. They even have a whole song (Admit It!!!)about how much everyone else is a sellout and poser while they're all the real deal.Give me a break.Would it kill Say Anything to write real songs? The lyrics suck.No creativity. Some songs start out decent and completely diminish.Unlike my favorite band(My Chemical Romance)they can't keep the song from dying. The are exactly who they claim they hate. They look down on everyone. If I didn't think A.W.T.G.O.L. was such a creative and breakthrough song I would give it one star.

5 out of 5 stars say what?.......2007-06-09

when i first heard say anything, it was the video for the song "alive with the glory of love", which i liked. as i went on to listen to more songs, i just wasn't feeling it at all...not one bit

but somewhere throughout not feeling it, i began to feel it=), it just took awhile, i am sure we've all had albums like that, where at first you hate it then you end up loving it almost as much as yr mother.

well, i am not going to try and write an award winning review here, other than saying you need to get this record, being a musician myself, this album has inspired me on so many levels. i feel max bemis is onto something, and i can't stop listening to this stuff...find all of their ep's and misc recordings if you can too...appreciate say anything as a whole, from beginning to present...it's worth it...

at the moment, my fav track is "yellow cat/red cat"...i really feel that song is brilliant, and it makes me wish i would have written it...

thanks for reading my uninteresting but hopefully convincing review=)

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing CD!.......2007-05-28

I hadn't heard of this group before this last weekend until a friend of mine made me listen to "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too." I didn't really like the song all that much, kinda strange lyrics, but it was catchy, so I ended up downloading it off iTunes.

After listening to the rest of ...Is A Real Boy, I was hooked. They haven't left my car CD player, and they've been playing constantly on iTunes.

Some of my favorites are:
The Writhing South
Yellow Cat/Red Cat
Every Man Has A Molly
I Want to Know Your Plans
and
Admit It!!!

I'd label Say Anything and this CD of theirs as addictive. Each song is amazing in its own way. Buy this album, you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars Who gave these guys a record deal?.......2007-04-09

I saw their video for "WoW, I can get sexual too."
This could very well be the lamest band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Words can't explain how good this album is.... but I'll try.......2007-01-04

1. belt- 10/10 Great rockin intro and funky pre-chorus with a great pseudo answer/call ending
2. woe- 10/10 Cheeky with an excellent rhythm/backbeat breakdown. Climaxes with a soaring, stratospheric bridge that finally, gently leads you to the song's conclusion.
3. the writhing south- 10/10 Fantastic lyrical imagery and a fun sing-along chorus. High energy bridge is like sticking your finger into a electrical outlet.
4. alive with the glory of love- 10/10 Best known song on the album and the reason you've found this review. Not much to say that you don't already know.
5. yellow cat/red cat- 10/10 I love the bass guitar in this song. The drags on the drums add to the "laziness" that the lyrics convey. Also, the girl in the chorus sounds pretty cute.
6. the futile- 10/10 Some of my favorite grab-your-attention lyrics on the album. Great melody. More hooks than the Bass Pro Shop.
7. spidersong- 8/10 Not my favorite on the album, but Max's sigh at the end makes the song.
8. an orgy of critics- 10/10 So high energy, it's like sticking your fingers in BOTH outlets.
9. every man has a molly- 10/10 Great intro lyrics and melody. Almost like a great drinking song.
10. slowly, through a vector- 9/10 A little meandering at the beginning, but I love the last minute or so if it.
11. chia like, i shall grow- 10/10 Chia like, this song will grow on you.
12. i want to know your plans- 10/10 The concertina reminds me of some poor sailor thinking of that one special girl. Sappy, but it works.
13. admit it!- 10/10 A sledgehammer of lyrics straight to the face of all things fashionable and pretentious. It makes you want to get off your duff and just enjoy your life. This track is the best possible way to close the album.

There has been only one other album that I've liked this much on a first listen, and that was weezer's blue album back in 94. You won't regret giving Say Anything a chance. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it a 10 for nostaliga purposes.......2007-04-07

There are some great songs on this soundtrack. Any of you 80's adolescents out there will be taken back in time when you listen to this.

3 out of 5 stars A boring Movie, as bland as it's name saved by Cheap Trick and others on a good soundtrack.......2005-12-28

John Cusack's movie for his fans only. What the
hell is an Iyone Skye? I mean, sure she's cute,
but is that any reason to hear Cusack cuss
throughout this average flick? The Soundtrack
helps it get a *** star rating.

4 out of 5 stars Play Anything........2005-11-30

I remember thinking when this film came out that few things in life were as cool as Lloyd Dobler. This soundtrack is also one of those things. This album for me, as for many I'm sure, somewhat reflected my taste in music at the time, and even now actually. Of course the biggie here is "In Your Eyes" from Peter Gabriel. Who hasn't that track touched at some point? This also confirmed my love for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and here we get a slightly extended version of their classic "Taste The Pain". Toss on a few from Fishbone, Living Colour, and The Replacements and you solidify this soundtrack as a must own for the late 80's alt-rock lover. Not to mention the goods from Depeche Mode and Nancy Wilson (Heart). In fact the only thing that could've made this album any better, is if it ended with a "ding".

3 out of 5 stars Say Anything..........2003-06-06

It's not hard to understand why folks enjoy watching movies - it's an escape to life's finer moments. It's probably harder to understand the attraction towards movie soundtracks, except that the music reminds us of these moments. And, when it's done well, with both a quality movie and quality soundtrack, as is the case with Say Anything, the results are noteworthy.

Say Anything wins over its listener, surprisingly, by connecting at various levels. The love song is found more than once, with Nancy Wilson's "All for Love" and Peter Gabriel's classic, "In Your Eyes" both avoiding the schmaltzy love song description. Rock and roll is always a nice touch for any soundtrack (especially one for a cool romantic comedy), and that's found here too, from guitar wizard Joe Satriani, who contributes "One Big Rush" and then up and coming funk/rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose "Taste the Pain" hints at a sound they would later polish even more in the 1990s. Other noteworthy songs include 80's mainstays the Replacements and their song, "Within Your Reach" as well as live versions of Depeche Mode's "Stripped" and Living Colour's "Cult of Personality".

In truth, Say Anything the movie is better than Say Anything the soundtrack. It's not essential listening like Say Anything the movie is essential viewing. But for those who get misty-eyed for 80's music or like to scour the used CD bins for unexpected treasures, this one's got your name on it...Enjoy.
