Amazon.com essential recording
The two No. 1 hits from this 1972 album perfectly illustrate the contrasting sides of Wonder's complex personality. "Superstition" is a strong rocker, a paranoid bit of wah-wah guitar funk that's as persistent as the best punk music; the opening track, "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," is a pure love song that would sound corny coming from any other voice. A hint of bitterness, perhaps owing to Wonder's then-dissolving marriage, gives Talking Book its edge. But overall it's obsessed with love, and while "Sunshine" is still one of the singer/keyboardist's most beloved songs, the closing "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)" is much deeper and more rewarding. --Steve Knopper

Stevie Wonder's Greatest Album........2007-04-18
Stevie Wonder released many classic albums in the 1970's including "Innervisions", "Fulfilingness First Finale" and the epic "Songs In the Key Of Life". However, in this reviewers opinion, his late 1972 classic "Talking Book" is still Stevie's best overall album.
Like "Music Of My Mind" before it, "Talking Book" finds Stevie Wonder in complete control by writing, producing and performing most of the music himself. His natural songwriting talents combined with the latest technology and his unmistakable vocals make for what is undoubtedly a timeless classic.
Many of the tracks on "Talking Book" have become standards since their initial release including the wonderful "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Tuesday Heartbreak", "Blame It On The Sun", "You've Got It Bad Girl" and the driving funk of "Superstition". Elsewhere are stellar moments such as the hard rock of the jamming "Maybe Your Baby", the folkish "Big Brother", the beautifully orchestrated piano ballad "You and I" and the dynamic spiritual closer "I Believe".
Indeed, all 10 tracks that make up "Talking Book" are some of the best music Stevie Wonder has ever made. This isn't just an album to be listened to in sections, it needs to be played from beginning to end. As mentioned above, Stevie has made albums that have equalled "Talking Book", however this album has an extra little added kick that brings it above the others.
Although I've been familiar with the "Talking Book" album since I was born, I'm very happy to say that I finally own this album all these years later.
A Classic - For Anyone's "Greatest of All Time" Collection.......2007-02-19
This album should be in any serious collection of 20th Century music. One of the best of its genre. Just as fun to listen to now as when it came out decades ago.
A Simply Marvelous Recording.......2006-12-14
In one of the greatest albums recorded, Stevie Wonder writes timeless music with a classic blend of r&b, blues, gospel and jazz.
Though the lyrics may be biting at times, You Are The Sunshine Of My Life is a pop classic. And the grappling with the beauty and desperation of love culminates with the last song, I Believe, that evolves from a wonderful gospel rendition into cutting blues.
Superstition is one bad piece of music and the political awareness in Big Brother is unfortunately timeless, especially for urban residents. Blame It On The Sun has Wonder fully utilizing soft textures on the synthesizer, ultimately showing how technology can work with - and not dominate - other instruments.
Released in November 1972 - the outstanding Music of My Mind was released earlier in the year - Talking Book proved without a doubt that Wonder's ability as a composer/producer/musician had reached iconic status at the age of 22.
Proves my point............2006-12-14
This album solidifies why I honestly think Stevie Wonder is the greatest solo recording artist in history. There is not a single bad song on here and is thus far my favorite Stevie Wonder album. Slow ballads like "You & I" and "I Believe". The funk classic "Superstition" AM Gold classic "You are the Sunshine of My Life", and some more that are really great songs are all on here. BUY THIS ALBUM. This is up there w/ "Dark Side of the Moon", "Thriller", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", or Stevie's very on "Innervisions"
Stevie is amazing........2006-11-29
Prior to purchasing this CD, I was only familiar with some of Stevie's hits, which I heard on the radio, and "the definitive collection" cd which I purchased before seeing him in concert. That being said, I loved everything I had heard of his thus far.
Let me tell you, now this CD just stands out as one of the greatest all times for me. Besides the classics "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" and "Superstition," every song on this CD is great, although I am personally less fond of "Looking for Another Pure Love." "You and I" is another great Stevie Wonder ballad, and he shows off his amazing vocal technique yet again with the final chorus. My favorite song on this CD though is probably "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)." I actually read the lyrics to this track before I had heard it, and the optimism that the song expresses about new love mixed with it's dark melody really touched me.
I highly recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.

Shemekia Copeland has already scored numerous awards and accolades, but this is the young singer's real artistic breakthrough. While Copeland's first two CDs were at times marred by ham-fisted musical support and subpar songwriting, she is now free to unfurl the subtle, soulful side of her big voice. "Don't Whisper" sounds like a lost Memphis classic--the kind of tearjerker Ann Peebles might have cut. Copeland pours her vocals like warmed honey over the song's sad lyrics and an arrangement that balances producer Dr. John's delicate piano with edgy, tremoloed guitars. She turns soft and breathy on the lovely, jazz-inflected ballad "Happy Valentine's Day," evoking a worldly, relaxed beauty that belies her 23 years. There's plenty of full-tilt belting, too. "Sholanda's," a tongue-in-cheek trip to a beauty parlor, balances her power with graceful New Orleans-flavored drums and slide. And "The Push I Need" is a playful duet with Dr. John that's sprightly and smart enough to sidestep clichés. Overall, there's a sense of poised musicianship at work, which makes Talking to Strangers emotionally tempered and rewarding. --Ted Drozdowski

Third time is the charm.......2006-01-04
This is a good album. She has a great voice and has some good material to showcase it on. This album leaves us ready and waiting for more.
Serious Singer / Funky Fun.......2005-12-13
A while back, I had heard Shemekia talked about as a serious new blues singer by several people who I know to know what they're talking about. So I filed her name in my head for future reference as an artist worth looking into. Shortly thereafter I came upon this album in the blues section of my local store, and immediately decided to take a chance when I noticed that the album opens with Livin' On Love, a tune which had been recorded a few years ago by my favorite singer, Tracy Nelson. Good music begets good music, and I've found that albums produced by singers who are classy enough to pick great songs like Livin' On Love generally proffer superior material throughout.
I had no idea. After buying Talking To Strangers and playing it four times in one night, I went back to the record store the next day and bought two more of her albums, Turn the Heat Up and Wicked. While those two were not quite the standouts that Talking To Stranger turned out to be, I'm not sorry I got them. In time, I came to like them as much for different reasons, but let me tell everybody here and now - no matter which of her albums you choose to acquire, this woman can SING.
Besides the aforementioned Livin' On Love, Talking To Strangers is a veritable smorgasbord of good, old-fashioned funk. Happy Valentines Day, Don't Whisper and When A Woman's Had Enough are standouts. Ms. Copeland pretty much sings about affairs of the heart, both requited and otherwise, and the title track is about as apt and truthful an assessment of the singles dating scene that I have ever encountered. For great comic relief, there's a tune called Sholanda's that had me splitting my sides.
If urban contemporary blues is your thing, I highly recommend Talking To Strangers. If you know nothing about contemporary blues, it's a good place to start.
Pie on CD.......2005-08-01
Well, there's a song here called "Pie In The Sky"....
Anyway, the editorial review is way off the mark in claiming that Shemekia Copeland's first two albums were marred by "hamfisted musical support", but the reviewer certainly gets it right as far as her vocal talents are concerned.
"Talking To Strangers" is a fine collection of funky soul, R&B, blues and a little rock n' roll, all of it delivered with a bluesy edge. The band is not quite as low down an dirty as the small combo which backed her on her highly esteemed debut album, but the excellent production by Dr John keeps things from getting too slick.
The title track is pure deep soul, and other highlights include "Walk On", the swaggering opener "Livin' On Love", the beautiful soul ballad "Don't Whisper", the silly but funky "Sholanda's" (pay no attention to the lyrics), and, well, about five or six more.
Mac Rebennack himself, the good doctor, plays delightful blues and R&B on his customary piano, and lead and slide guitarist Arthur Neilson is top-notch when he gets the chance to shine. It would have been good to hear a little more from him.
The songwriting on "Talking To Strangers" is not highly original, sure, but it is consistently good and often great. Mood and tempo varies a lot, and while I would have liked a couple more up-tempo songs, especially on the latter half of the disc, there are a lot of nice little grooves being dug here.
Shemekia Copeland is one of the very best female blues and soul singers of the 21st century, and this fine record does indeed have a beat to which you can dance. Or you can just kick back and enjoy, whatever works for you.
3 3/4 stars. Shemekia has yet to make a bad record.
AMAZING LIVE PERFORMER.......2003-07-11
Shemekia can perform like nobody's business. Saw her in an outdoor gig in NYC on 7/11/03, and she brought the house down. Incredible voice, particularly given her young age. Fantastic stage presence. Great band. Just a jaw-dropping hard-core blues experience. Don't miss her, and BUY THIS CD. We got all three, and had them signed at the show.
Wow!.......2003-01-15
Shemekia Copeland just may be the most exciting female singer we've seen since Aretha Franklin, and with this CD, she truly reaches her stride. There is not many times when you have 15 tracks and ALL of them are good, but this is one of those rare disks. Her big, soulful voice adds a new dimension to the blues, superbly produced by old pro Dr. John (who plays keyboards on some of the tracks). She comes across as real in all her tunes here, ranging from the playful ("Livin' on Love"), the mournful ("Happy Valentine's Day", a beautiful slow ballad; "Talking to Strangers", "Should Have Come Home"); the vengeful ("Ka-ching"), the introspective ("The Push I Need", a duet with Dr John) and even her offbeat ode to the owner of a beauty salon ("Sholanda's"). I guarantee you will hear much more about this young singer in the years to come, so enjoy her now. Very highly recommended.

Steve Winwood's third solo album.......2007-05-28
This is Steve's third solo album and second with Will Jennings as co songwriter. The main problem with this album is that Steve chose to go it alone instead of using a band. Many of the songs on here would come across better if he was using real players but just about everything is done with synths which gives the album a very dry feeling to me. Several of the songs would come across pretty well had he used a band-Valerie, And I Go, While There's A Candle Burning, Still In The Game and Help Me Angel shows signs of being really good songs.
Winwood Is Still In The Game.......2007-01-30
Steve Winwood's 1982 solo album, "Talking Back To The Night," is a breezy, cheerful delight. Winwood plays all of the instruments himself, and the very-catchy songs on this album are among Steve's best, including the classic "Valerie," and other winners like "Big Girls Walk Away," "Still In The Game," "Help Me Angel," and the excellent, made-for-cruising title track. Yes, this is unquestionably Steve's most synthesiser-heavy album, (after all, it was made in 1982), but I think his synth sound here is simply wonderful and uplifting (as is his singing, songwriting, performing & production chops). I love the charming "do-it-yourself" vibe that Steve gives the music on this disc! So go ahead and pick up "Talking Back To The Night," one of my personal favorites from the multi-talented Steve Winwood.
sounds like he sat down and just played.......2005-10-20
This album is interesting (1982). It sounds like he sat down at a keyboard and drum machine and simply recorded the entire album. It's very raw and simple (complex at the same time) with little production and it is almost entirely steve winwood, a drum box, and keyboards. There's good stuff on here includinghelp me angel, valerie, and talking back to the night. Chronicles(1987) features versions of those songs listed above and are much more produced and much more powerful. Valerie, from chronicles, has been played on mainstream radio since then. I love winwood's vocal range and his keyboard patterns and it's interesting to hear a rock album so stripped down. This album is much better than 1980s arc of a diver (while you see a chance). Winwood is also renound for doing many different things and this album was much different than back in the high life (1986) which was much more organic but still electric. Overall, good album and a must for winwood fans.
great 80s synth-pop.......2005-10-01
I actually like this one better than Arc of a Diver (unlistenable?!?) and Back in the High Life. While I love Winwood in all his guises (Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic, etc), this album has always been my personal favorite. Valerie (this version is much better than later one with revised drum track and vocals) and Still in the Game are the highlights for me (if you're of a certain age, you'll recall seeing the videos on MTV), although the ballads are also excellent. I can't recall how many papers I wrote in high school and college with this album on repeat in the background. The guy's talent is limitless.
Righteous Pop-Rock Multi-Instrumentalist/Singer Makes Statement About Self-Indulgence.......2005-06-16
On TALKING BACK TO THE NIGHT, Steve Winwood makes a strong statement about how happy life can be if you don't indulge in bad habits (e.g. drugs, caffeine, alcohol, food, tobacco, gambling). When this album came out, many thought it was the work of a recovering addict, but interviews with Winwood proved that not to be the case. Rather, he was commenting on how he had survived while many of his contemporaries had not. This album makes me contemplate how many kids I went to school with may end up in psychiatric centers for the rest of their lives, whereas I'm in my own apartment, and how, in May 1993, many of my classmates were in terrible shape, but a girl I was on a rec group trip with, who I'd gone to camp with, who was available (not already dating), thought I was attractive. Winwood's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes this CD/cassette an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

NASTY ENOUGH FOR KICKS!.......2007-04-06
I wouldn't reccommend this album to a casual fan of funk since this band comes off sounding like a low rent Funkadelic. But Black Nasty comes up with grooves that's so nasty and sticky, that you'll easily forget how unorginal they are. They may not have brought anything new to the table, but the first rate grooves is enough to make up for their lack of new ideas.
The fast tempo tracks is about as down, dirty, and raw as you can get with early 70's funk but, the group is lame when they try to slow it down. "Rushin Sea" is the only slow jam that reaches the level of excitement of the uptempo funk.
It's not hard to understand why this album flopped. In addtion to having a rock and soul fusion that made it a nightmare to sell to black and white audiences exclusively, the group never had a style of their own. Back in the 70's, you couldn't just chase down the latest trend of the moment and call yourself being a artist (like you could today!). You had to take the trends, personalize it, and create a style of your own. Not suprisingly this album failed under the radar.
This album is for hardcore funkateers only. Beginners should stick with the usual suspects Parliament, Funkadelic, Kool & the Gang, etc.
very funky group tight.......2006-03-15
have'nt heard this in agres good rock funky songs influenced by funbkadelic not quite but if you like black rock from the old school get this evcery song is enjoyable.
Really thick, gritty, early funk from Detroit.......2004-04-22
I bought this CD (as I have so many others) because of the review, lower by Mr. Eddie Landsberg, who is usually spot on in his funk recommendations, though at times I think he over-emphasizes how funky some things are...
This is a case in point, there a several burning tracks on this CD- 1, 3, 4, 5, and 10 are smokin, indeed in the style and hard thumpin attack of early Funkadelic. The guitarist definitely tries out his screaming Eddie Hazel licks (Nasty Soul could be a lost Funkadelic early track, it's psychedelic and hot in all the right ways), usually to pretty good effect... Track 7, 'I Have No Choice,' is a very sunny, souful number and calls to mind The Dramatics.
The rest of the album is strong, albeit repetitive at times (a quality that occurs in much funk music). All in all, this is No substitute for Maggot Brain or Standing on the Verge of gettin it On, but it is fairly inexpensive and delightful piece of over-looked funky goodness. It's not genius but still highly recommended.
And check out Mr. Landsberg's reviews and lists, (I emailed him once to ask some recommendations for funky harmonica CDs- he was quite helpful in that regard) if you're interested in funk and spending time on amazon, looking around... I'd never have dug on Rasputin Stash, Black Heat, Black Nasty or many other slept-on old-school funkin classics, were it not for mr. Landsberg's reviews.
7/8th's Scale Funk.......2002-07-15
Nuggets! There are some great sticky little gems on Talking To The People, but it's hard to dispel the notion that while in a haze of Maggot Brain induced inebriation, this shag band actually began to fantasize about becoming the next Funkadelic. Deliriously disillusioned lead guitarist Jackie Cosper(?) even attempts the Eddie Hazel mind-meld with a few stinky electrophonic licks. Sadly, the toughest tracks on this record barely surpass two or three minutes, with the same material Funkadelic could easily whip up ten minutes of grooves that would have us reduced into a funk inflected puddle of goo. Black Nasty solidly delivers the (short) nasty on the title track, "Nasty Soul", "We're Doin' Our Thing", "It's Not The World", and "Booger the Hooker". Beware! You may hurt yourself diving for the "skip" button the moment the buzz killing "I Must Be in Love", "I Have No Choice" , and "Rushin' Sea" begin to stink up the joint. Talking To The People is a cool record, though. If you want to impress your friends with your knowledge of funka-esoterica this one is tough to beat, but frankly Black Nasty is a minor league group that just happened to produce a record that almost sounds like it belongs in the majors. Now, where did I put that copy of Maggot Brain...
Rare Early Funk.......2000-06-23
Great unique funk sound from the early 70's. If you like Funkadelic or the Ohio Players you will certainly enjoy this. Its worth the money for the title track alone. But there is so much more, interesting cross funk with blues and rocking boogie tracks. The liner notes are informative and come with a way cool picture of the band. Since there was only 5000 albums pressed you can turn your friends on to some very rare funk.

Product Description
The hypnotic rhythms of Aztec drums and hautning sounds of Mesoamerican wind instruments blend with the seven voice of SAVAE in this companior recording to their bestselling "Guadalupe: Virgen de Los Indios." The music, dating from the mid-16th century reflects the unprecedentd vangelization that occurred as result of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the Nahua Inidan Juan Dieo in 1531.
Customer Reviews:
SAVAE IS A HIDDEN TREASURE.......2005-08-09
I did not know much about SAVAE or this recording until I attended the annual conference of the Hymn Society of the US and Canada, which met in San Antonio, TX this year. There, I had the wonderful experience of a workshop with several members of SAVAE, in which we sang and clapped the complex melodies and rhythms of the music, and were introduced to some of the indigenous language, as well as the various drums, stones and flutes they used for accompaniment. Later in the conference, we (some 300 of us) were treated to a sublime concert, which included some of the pieces on this recording. We also got to sight-read three pieces from their upcoming CD of Christmas music from the same era. I don't think they had ever performed before so larga and appreciative an audience. This group deserves to be discovered by lovers of Early Music everywhere!
Culturally pleasing..........2003-06-19
In the album, El Milagro de Guadalupe, SAVAE clearly demonstrate their ability to cross-cultures and to unite or fuse the commonalities without difficulty. The sacred music somehow seems so much more holy in this context. The vocalists are quite talented singers and linguists. Overall a very pleasant cd and would recommend it to others.
Let tell you something..........2002-06-14
This is not what I think that
the Spaniards would wanted done,
in actual practice. This is all
sacred music all performed on
native aztec instruments, not
a single significant part for
convetional European instrument.
In most poor congregation in colonial
Latin-America, there would at least
be an organ, or a gitar, in the poorest
congregations, if an organ was out
of the question, a pair of recorders
would do just fine for church services.
There are better versions out there of
colonial Latin-American music.
Unbelievable.......2001-11-09
I was given this CD as a gift and I must say that it is the most incredible thing I have ever heard. There is something about it's "earthyness" that attracts my friends and I to it. I hope that SAVAE is around for a long time and that they keep blessing the world with their music.
Modern Aztec Interpretations.......2000-11-02
The music on this CD is in a word, ethereal. Beautiful choral music fused with Aztec instruments for a listening experience to not be forgotten nor matched in sheer beauty. The Nahuatl language is a joy to the ears, it speaks in whispers of a time long forgotten. The playing of indigenous Aztec instruments transports the listeners to another time period, a time without cars and planes, and the hectic schedules associated with modern times. Put this CD on and relax, it is hauntingly beautiful. The songs are all superb, inspiring one to transend the mundane to elevate to a higher plane. I don't know about 6+5+4 beats but I do know that the complex rhythmns astound the soul. The inspiration for this CD is La Virgen de Guadalupe and her grace must have bestowed supernatural powers on this recording because it is excellent. If you know of any devotees of La Virgen de Guadalupe this is an excellent choice to give them. The music is so different from anything you may have heard before. A revival of Aztec music, by a superb group of choral singers and musicians that is breathtaking. Put this CD on to listen to your inner sanctum, you might like what you hear, it is music for your soul. A real jewel, file this under inspiration.

Rock n Soul!.......2001-08-13
Great packaging, impressive liner notes [with new background info. and rare photos], and above average sound do not change the fact that for LR collectors it's the same ol' same ol' Vee Jay cuts - *still* no stereo on the re-recordings, *still* no prev. unreleased stuff, etc. But it's a fine place for a new LR fan or Rock n Soul historian to start: despite some curious jazz-based arranging and occasional voice problems, Penniman's '64 and '65 tracks have withstood the test of time and in fact contain sounds every bit as important as the ones he made for Specialty '55 to '57 and early '64. For example, the super soul ballad I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT is easily in his unofficial Top 10, a masterpiece featuring Jimi Hendrix, Don Covay, and probably Billy Preston. It was cut in New York City in May of 1965 along with the uptempo gems DANCIN' ALL AROUND THE WORLD and YOU BETTER STOP, the latter a funky Motown-type take. It is reported that a fourth tune was cut that day, an instrumental which remains in mothballs. [Note: The alternate recording of I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT is used twice - the great harmony vocal version with Don Covay is not here].
