5 out of 5 stars Amazing Brazilian Post-Punk from the 80's.......2005-09-29

The vibrant and energetic Brazilian Post-Punk movement from the 80's went by without anyone, outside of Brazil, taking notice. Finally, Soul Jazz (thank you!) decided to put out this awesome compilation. Now the world can listen to how Brazilians reacted to American and European Punk music. "The Sexual Life of the Savages" covers a lot of ground from the guitar-heavy music of As Mercenarias and Smack to the moody and sophisticated ambiance of Chance (one of my favorite bands to this day), from the experimental and rich rhythms of Patife and Akira S to the tropical goth of Cabine C and NAU, and from the low-tech samba of Fellini (the best Brazilian band EVER) to the spooky 80's tecno-pop of Harry. This is experimental Post-Punk music like you never imagined.

The CD kicks off with two songs from As Mercenarias, an all-girls Punk band who delivers their hard (and melodic) music and political lyrics with amazing confidence. The guitars in "Inimigo" sound like a crazed video game that is ready to Tilt. Hot.

Patife, who appears around the middle of the CD, is another great band. They sound like a mix between a tropical A Certain Ratio and, in a sarcastic way, a greedy business man. Their vocals and rhythms are great.

Fellini is my favorite band of all times. They have recorded 5 excellent albums. The most recent one, "Amanha e Tarde," came out a couple of years ago, and I highly recommend it. It is a bit different from what you hear from them in this compilation.

Gang 90, A.K.A. Gang 90 & Absurdettes, has only one song in the CD, but they are some of the pioneers of this Brazilian 80's scene. Their album "Essa Tal de Gang 90 & Absurdettes" is a Brazilian classic and it is available on Amazon (another album I recommend). It has more of a New Wave feel to it; if you like Talking Heads, Blondie, and the B-52's, you will love it.

Chance is just so sexy. Unfortunately, I think they recorded only the two songs that are in "The Sexual Life of the Savages." With lots of pianos, subtle rhythms, whispered and spoken vocals, they exude tons of sexuality and moodiness.

Although not all tracks in "The Sexual Life of the Savages" are great, most of them are of unexpected and amazing quality - classics. Check this CD out, and, if you like what you hear, check out some of my recommendations above. I think you will be very surprised by this Brazilian Post-Punk scene that no one has heard of until now.

5 out of 5 stars Great comp from Soul Jazz!.......2005-09-28

I bought this about a month ago, never expecting to be too impressed by it. I just wanted to have a taste of something that seemed like a bizarre concept to me, initially. I mean Brazilian post-punk?! C'mon! I love Brazilian music (60s/70s) and bands like Os Mutantes were as good as most psychedelic bands in the US and Europe in the 60s, but i couldn't imagine a post-punk movement doing something significant in a country like Brazil.

Those late 60s/70s artists, heavily influenced by rock music, created a wonderful mix of sounds, they called 'tropicalia'. In the US and the UK (Europe), the mid-late 70s brought with them a new movement in life and music: punk. The thing is, i have no idea if punk ever 'happened' in Brazil. I'm sure Soul Jazz will surprise me with a wonderful Brazilian punk comp sometime in the near future (!), but this ignorance of mine made it harder to grasp the concept of a POST-punk scene in this country.

This compilation is sublime! It is easily one of the best V/A comps i've purchased in a long long time! Sure, these bands borrowed a lot from their UK/US heroes (Joy Division, NY No Wave scene, Gang Of 4, Pop Group etc), but they manage to make those sounds entirely their own. I think the fact that it's in a language most people can't speak helps in that department. It adds a certain exotic quality to these recordings, that's for sure.

This collection consists entirely of songs from the Sap Paulo post-punk scene. As the compilers note, cities like Rio De Janeiro also had an equally vibrant scene at the time, but this set focuses only on SP.

In conclusion i'll just say this: if you love post-punk and are looking to discover some 'new' sounds then you're in for a treat! I hope i'm not overhyping it, but if you're into this sort of music then this is an essential CD!

Wow ! Track 3@4 are ok and take some getting use to, but all 18 tracks are wow ! Punk there is, but it seems to me it is 80's all the way. A must and get ready. Check out the liners.

    5 out of 5 stars Saw B. W. & the Savages 1989 at the El and Gee.......2004-12-07

I can't believe this is still in print. Could have sworn the original issues were on a private label. I recently discovered The Sonics (A real rockin' band from US NW, pre-British Invasion). Their "Strychnine" immediately brought to mind Barrence Whitfield. Both lead singers can howl like banshees, raise the roof, and start a party at a funeral. I'm gonna buy it now. (Bread was scarce back then.)I met Barrence after the show in New London and it amazed me how low key he was. Very quiet, almost shy, but very eager to sell CD's. The El & Gee was known for booking amazing acts in the '80's and '90's and BW & S was no exception. I also saw The Rev. Horton Heat there in '95. another Rock show with Soul. Buy this CD. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD nobody owns.......2000-06-03

Remember Jolt Cola? This is it right here. The best live performance ever recorded with the worst sound engineering. The engineers must have been buying beers at the time. Lizzie Leaps In = Quincy Jones tribute - thanks Barrence. Saw him open for George Thorogood - spilled orange soda on himself for effect. Pure energy, pure blues. Love it, live it. Saw him at Brandeis - had 10 audience members at first, 225 by the end of the set.

5 out of 5 stars Great energy and loads of fun........1999-03-12

Stop twisting my arm (I already love you) is among my favorite tunes and has been for at least five years. But that mule thing is a kick too. The feel is like that of Jr. Cadillac but with a few more good miles. The slower tunes (Apology Line) are a good balance. Barrence is energy for the taking.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! What Fun!!.......2006-09-10

How do you describe Red Priest? Wow! Is a start. They are masters of their instruments and know the pieces inside and out. They bring fun and freshness to classical music. They play with tempo and add all sorts of things that have not been done in classical music. The improvisation/embellishment in the music is fantastic. The witches cackling in the Witches dance is one of the favorites for my kids. They love this CD and ask for it over and over again. If you like music played straight (boring) with no embellishment or interpretation from the musician, then this is not for you. If you like fun, fresh, exciting renditions, then this is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars Playful Gothic madness.........2006-08-10

Those crazy Red Priest guys have done it again, making a wonderfully fun and playful disc of thrash-baroque. This small group really tears up the score. I can imagine that Red Priest would be a riot to see live.

I haven't heard any of the pieces played by a 'straight' ensemble, so I can't comment, but I highly suspect these guys of taking some outrageous liberties. But you have to go with the flow here to get your reward from this romp.

Many of the tracks are not played at the breakneck speed of 'Priest on the Run', but just so's you know, some are. The gothic theme works well, even if it may be a little of a stretch for some of the pieces. When the music slows, you feel as though it is trying to creep up behind you so it can jump out and go 'Boo!' An album that I'd hate to meet in a dark alleyway.

This is not for everybody, but anyone who aspires to the baroque mosh-pit, this is it!

    5 out of 5 stars Moai Madness!.......2002-01-14

I have to disagree with the previous poster, a long time ago I went to the Tiki Tones web page where you can listen to the tracks for both albums right the way through. After a few goes round the real player there was no question in my mind that the second album, Suburban Savages is *BY FAR* the better record, after which I went out and ordered a copy and have had it on high rotation ever since then

The tunes are so strong and together on this release whereas I found the first album quite ordinary and cliched in it's production. In many ways I love the dark haunted island stuff, mixed with powerful pumping surf tracks, and this album delivers allot of both.

Best tracks to listen for are Night of the Tiki's, Topple the Moai, CX9, Twister and many more. Killer surf album which is only barely matched by the Fathoms *Overboard* album. If you like this album go get the Fathoms one next, and if you already have the Fathoms album then this should be hot on your list!

    3 out of 5 stars 2nd tier Tiki Tunes.......1999-01-14

The Tiki Tones are a good band, but their first album ("Idol Pleasures") is much better than this one. They seem to be running out of their best material on this album. Still, there are some snappy tunes here, but I was expecting more because the first album is so great.
