Ask anyone who's attended one and they'll tell you: there's nothing quite as colorful--and emotionally melodramatic--as a Greek wedding. Based on Winnipeg actress-comedian Nia Vardalos's one-woman show and brought to the screen by Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, the film tells (with some parallels to Moonstruck) the story of a thirtysomething Greek spinster for whom falling in love with a "Xeno" (non-Greek) is surely the easiest part of a wedding that more than lives up to its billing. The film's soundtrack perfectly captures those swirling clouds of ethnic and romantic tension. Its first half largely sets up the rich cultural atmosphere with a lively sampling of traditional Greek folk music (featuring selections by Alexandros Xenofontos, John Tsifliklis, Eman, Nick Kutsukos, Daghan Baydur, and Richard Thomas), while the score proper from Alexander Janko (with help from Chris Wilson) slyly segues from similar fare ("Moose Caca," "Yasoo," "Yiayia") to more traditional orchestral film music. That sometimes electro-pastoral, compelling music has parallels with Rachel Portman's and offers the collection a sense of emotional completion. --Jerry McCulley

Great disappointment on amazon's shipping method.......2007-07-07
I had ordered this particular CD. However, After the second tried. i am yet to receive the CD. And i was really hoping the second CD could appear in my doorstep on the expected arrival date or 1 week later.
To be honest, This is the first time i didn't manage to receive my good from E-commerce Portal. I totally didnt expect this happen from reputable Amazon.
Nonetheless. I must admit your friendly customer service, they are always willing to assist me to reprocess or the refund the marchant.
Please kindly review your shipping method. or perhaps let me know what had happened to my shipping address or my goods. so i could still have confident to make purchase on your website again.
The Greek Music-.......2006-02-10
The cd is so phenomenal. The music is so traditional and it show so much of the greek culture. The bouzoki that they use which is a greek instrument was such a musical sound. In my school we are doing a GREEK PRESENTAION and we are going to use this music. We will dance to it and are going to be a success. So overall this is a superlative cd after all!!!!!!!!!!

The Greek Music is Great.......2003-05-05
I loved the strong rhythms and colorful harmonies of the traditional Greek numbers. The film score is lyrical but bland. This truly is a combination of "apples and oranges!"
Amazingly Relaxing CD!.......2003-03-08
This is a great instrumental CD! Not only great greek music that you can get up and dance to, but also the soft contemporary songs that you can just relax with. I enjoy it very much!

Here's another to join the parade of page-to-stage musicals inspired by 19th-century fiction. This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classic Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by Les Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical is found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.
Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.
The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as Les Mis and Nicholas Nickleby (not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includes Beauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. But this cast recording conveys an authentic sense of the musical's atmosphere and emotional scope. --Thomas May

Great Buy!.......2007-06-08
Not only was this CD super cheap, it also arrived at my house 3 days later!
Perfect Match.......2007-03-16
The music in this album really gave me the feeling of reading the book. I think the songs were well chosen and well written, except of course for the songs sung by Mrs. Fairfax... I could have done without those. Jane and Mr. Rochester's songs carry the story well and they sound lovely. For any musical lover, or romance fan I definitely recommend this album.
Probably the most beautiful musical of all time.......2007-02-16
This is a hidden gem and if you buy it and listen to it, I don't see how you can not love it. I have bought many, many Broadway cast albums but I still am a popster at heart. With all that said, this is a cast album that soars above the crowd.
I bought this several years ago and have listened to it repeatedly since I got it. Why do I love it so much? First of all, the lyrics are full of heart and emotion and tell the story ably. But it is the music and the performances that are truly remarkable here. The melodies are memorable and absolutely exquisite. The orchestration is lush but not sappy. The performances by the two leads are nothing less than stunning.
I never get bored with this wonderful cast album and it is very, very highly recommended.
Beautiful!.......2007-01-28
I listen to this soundtrack all the time and I never get tired of the songs. If Charlotte Bronte story was written as a musical, then this would definitely be it.
A good musical.......2006-07-20
if you like old-fashioned romantic stuff, this one's for you. Some songs are very inspired, the music is,for the most part, quite beautiful, and the story line keeps the essence of the Bronte novel. I heard this right after "Wuthering Heights: the musical", which is quite good, yet this is superior. Give it a try and you might be nicely surprised. I would highly recommend it to the ones who know the novel and to English Literature students: it offers a different and interesting approach to the novel.

Arleen Auger and Dalton Baldwin-Love Songs.......2007-01-29
A lovely collection -very varied. Arleen Auger has a beautiful voice and Baldwin's accompaniment is wonderful. The 3rd track, by Jayme Ovalle, is, as it says in the accompanying notes, bewitching, and is actually the reason I bought the CD.
Voice of experience.......2006-01-28
There isn't much I can add to the praise bestowed on this album by earlier reviewers. I do think though that a special poignancy is undeniable since Auger's voice, while still beautiful, clearly is not that of a young singer. Her maturity makes her interpretations of these love songs all the more touching. I've probably played this CD a dozen times through the years, far more than any other in my collection. It remains consistently and deeply satisfying.
Auger at her best.......2005-04-26
This is a disc that I recommend to my graduating seniors/graduate students who are pursuing a graduate degree or career options in Vocal Performance.
From the standpoint of technique, Auger is practically flawless---"harsh" is not a word I equate with Ms. Auger's singing. She and Dalton Baldwin are impeccable performers on this disc. All the material was wisely chosen and presented, including one of the slowest "O del mio amato ben's" and one of the slowest "Salley Gardens", indicative of the beautiful breath control this artist had. I have to take exception to one of the comments made by one reviewer, of the "lack of sesitivity to the music that most classical singers possess". This is plain ignorant. This reviewer clearly does not understand the great artistic endeavor that classical singers have to have with Song literature---only a non-singer could have said this. Our finest classical singers of memory have all been outstanding musicians. They also have texts to interpret in many languages. I, as a singer-performer-teacher take great umbrage at comments like this which serve only to degrade the richness of so much repertoire.
I too hated the untimely passing of this fabulous singer. She is one of four famous women singers who all died at the age of 53. I think this disc was recorded not to long before she passed away and does reflect her "goodbye" to her audience. However the disc will remain as timely as the repertoire in it.

Hidden Treasure.......2003-11-04
This recording is possibly one of the best examples of beautiful singing one will ever find. The repertoire, the artfulness, the line and the sheer beauty of Miss Auger's voice is a rare find. I've just recently purchased another copy as I loaned mine to a friend who begged to keep it! One note on the cover - this new cover art seems to imply this CD is some light version of 1970's Montovani romance music. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though the previous jacket (a photo of Miss Auger on pale pink) did look dated, I hope the next pressing of this (& I'm sure they'll be many more to come!) will give this collection the class packaging it deserves. This is a collector's item. Enjoy!!
Gorgeous, sensitive music.......2001-06-15
So first of all, ignore the cheesy cover art and album title. This is a beautiful collection of songs, beautifully performed. Since I concur with the other reviews that laud Auger's performance (though don't forget the accompanist Dalton Baldwin, who is also outstanding), I'll add only the comment that there is a certain melancholy surrounding a lot of the songs and performances that (a) I find haunting and appealing, and (b) you would never know simply from looking at the album.
The performance of "Why, No One to Love" is worth the price of admission alone.

A Successful Soundtrack that's not complete........2007-05-12
Just about all the other reviewers have summed up this gem of a soundtrack. It's great for parties, it's great for driving, it's fun.
There's only one major problem I have with it. That's the fact that it's just not complete.
The main track that's instantly missing is "OH YEAH", by the band 'YELLO'. Also 'Walking On Sunshine' should deffinatley be on there also.
I purchased this album from Amazon a while ago and feel it's high time there was a re-released special edition containing all the missing tracks, especially 'Oh Yeah' as that's the first song that comes to my head when I think of the movie full stop.
Here's hoping it's re-released without the mistakes of the new Top Gun soundtrack.
Sean.
Funny and Entertaining.......2007-01-17
I found it interesting that Roger Ebert disliked this movie. This movie is not artistic or well-acted. The situations are ludicrous and unlikely. However, this movie offers well-executed comedy that is highly entertaining.
Michael J. Fox is Brantly Foster, a recent college graduate and the nephew of a business executive and his wife. Foster is intelligent and considers that Uncle Howard (Richard Jordan) might give him an opportunity in his company. A job in the mail room was not exactly the start that Foster had in mind.
Foster realizes that in a corporation the size of his uncle's that it is easy to do things without anyone realizing what is happening. So Foster sets himself up as newly hired executive Carlton Whitfield. Most of the executives accept Whitfield for what he seems to be. Foster's only significant problems are keeping Uncle Howard from finding out that he is also Carlton Whitfield and keeping his mail room boss from learning that he is not always delivering mail when his boss thinks he should be.
Foster/Whitfield soon encounters beautiful Christy Wills (Helen Slater), a young and highly intelligent executive, with whom he soon falls in love. Just as quickly he encounters Aunt Vera (Margaret Whitton) and has more than one amorous encounter, before and after finding out she is his aunt by marriage.
With Foster impersonating an executive while working in the mail room, courting Christy, who, unbeknownst to him, is also involved with Uncle Howard, and avoiding Aunt Vera as much as possible, the comedic potential is high, and the movie delivers. Much of the comedy is borderline slapstick, but much of it is also situational.
The highlight of this movie, as with many light comedies of the 80s, is the somewhat cliche happy ending in the face of apparent doom. While you know there has to be a happy ending somewhere, you have to be very attentive to catch the clues that suggest what the ending might be.
This movie is one of my favorite 80s comedies. While some critics have treated it harshly, the movie is fun to watch over and over because the situations, while predictable, are well done. Michael J. Fox at the peak of his career always brought a likable presence to the screen and his execution usually brings at least smiles and more often laughs.
Note that this version is a VHS tape and a DVD version also exists.
Frustrated.......2006-12-14
They ruined my favorite song on this album, "I burn for you" by putting lyrics into it. Just butcher a masterpiece. I loved it in the scene where Fox and Slater kiss for the first time...the duet is killing me. Anyone know any -good- voice remover programs?
Beware of "Auntie Vera".......2005-08-24
Brantley Foster (Michael J. Fox) new to the city is a young lad out of management school and looking for a job. Luck would have it that his Uncle Howard Prescott (Richard Jordan) runs a big corporation. He gets a chance to work his way up from the mail room.
In the process he encounters his uncle's wife "Auntie Vera"(Margaret Whitton.) She takes an instant shine to him. One of my favorite scenes is where he barely escapes Auntie Vera's clutches.
Soon he realizes that the only way to get to the top is start on a higher rung; finding an empty office and knowing the way the building system works, he takes on the persona of Carlton Whitfield male "Suit". He has a business type interaction with Christy (Helen Slater) a female "Suit". She has a quasi relationship with someone higher up.
Then the action starts. There is a "working" weekend in which everyone has a second agenda. To this weekend both Brantley and Carlton are invited.
What are Brantley and Vera cooking up?
Is Carlton getting too close to Christy?
Does someone else have plans for Christy?
Will Carlton meet Brantley?
And who is the "bimbo?"
Michael J. Fox's performance makes up for some big holes.......2005-01-29
I have concluded that I have probably used "The Secret of My Succe$s" as an example in class more than just about any other film ever made. Part of the reason is that most students have seen this film, so I am likely to get nods of recognition more than if I mention "Battleship Potemkin" or "Citizen Kane." This 1987 comedy tells the story of Brantley Foster (Michael J. Fox), who heads from his family's farm in Kansas to the Big Apple to put his business degree to use, but all he can get is a job in the mail room of a firm owned by a distant uncle (Richard Jordan).
Brantley comes up with a short cut but there comes a moment when he has to step up to the plate and impress a group of potential investors with a brilliant idea. We see Brantley explain but his idea to an enthralled group of rich businessmen, but...WE HEAR NOTHING. The script by Jim Cash & Jack Epps, Jr. and AJ Carothers ("&" does not mean the same thing as "and" in Hollywood) could not come up with anything good enough to carry the scene so they just turned up the music and figured if we had enjoyed the movie to that point and if we liked Michael J. Fox then we would just buy this and proceed to the happy ending. We do like Fox and we proceed to the happy ending.
However, contrast this scene with its counterpart in another familiar film, "The Karate Kid." That would be the great scene where Mr. Miyagi explains to Daniel-san that "sand the floor" means a whole lot than he ever imagined. That is the sort of scene that makes an entire movie (and gets an actor an Oscar nomination), and "The Secret of My Success" has a big hole where that scene should be and it really bugs me that the writers could not come up with something that proved our hero deserved to be the hero.
There are more holes in this film, which allow Brantley to create the persona of Carlton Whitfield, a young executive in a previous empty office (being in the mailroom has its advantages in such a scheme) and provide a fairy godmother in the person of his Aunt Vera (Margaret Whitton). Meanwhile, Brantley (or Whitfield, depending on your perspective), is interested in Christy Wills (Helen Slater), who is introduced in the most erotic display of drinking from a water fountain in the history of American cinema.
This is Michael J. Fox's movie and his engaging performance forgives most of the film's faults in this mindless comedy (mindless in that you will like the film if you mind the holes in it less). Actually, I was amazed to really see how many stupid things happen in "The Secret of My Succe$s," but I still like Fox's performance. If nothing else, this film is a reminder that Fox was a gifted physical comedien. The world of business does not come out looking well, but then it is hard to find too many movies in the past twenty years that make you think kindly towards big business.

Excellent Comeback.......2007-05-05
THis album has steadily gotten 5 star reviews since it came out for a reason. It is a terrific rock album by one of the best rockers ever. Erics' singing is as great as it ever was. He writes great human interest stories in his songs, and the band is fantastic. I have the old Eric Burden albums. Great stuff, but always had some duds on em. This album is super all the way thru. If you like Eric at all, this is a must buy, as it is definately one of the best albums he ever made. You get hard rockers, ballads, and some blues& boogie. Great variation and a well thought out comeback. His songwriting is better than ever.
The Best Burdon disc of the past 20 years.......2007-02-26
Much as others have said... interesting variety, solid production. I think his voice is much stronger here than on other releases of the past two decades.
Truely cool.......2006-10-07
Eric Burdon is one of the most underappreciated artists of his time. This CD was put out in 2004 and Eric's voice can still growl and belt out tunes better than guys 1/2 his age. There are some truely cool tunes on this CD. Track 5 - Factory girl is blues tune with Celtic tint - Burdons voice is haunting as it's complemented by the Uillean Pipes and Irish whistle -superb! Track 2 - Motorcycle Girl is the just plain good - and others - Highway 62, Over the Border - all excellent.
Eric Burdon is a storyteller - he's been recounting stories in his music since the 60's and this talent is undiminished. I can listen these songs for hours.
Listening to his stories on this CD makes me wonder just what kind of journey his life has been for him to write such thought provoking and moving tunes.
This CD is a joy to listen to and a trip to take - enjoy.
Look, there isn't much to say........2006-06-24
Get this recording and listen to it four times. I guarantee at that point you will be addicted. It has it all and then some. A man of 63 singing like this? Just spectacular. I love Mick, but with all due respect (and he deserves a lot,) I don't think Mick could do the same justice to some of the material here as Burdon does.
If you're looking for a bright star in a dark universe... If your looking for some fun or have been yearning for an album you can sink your teeth into, look no further. I have rediscoverd Eric Burdon and he never left the building.
Mr. Burdon has gone to the cross roads!!!!.......2006-01-18
I bought this record strictly because of the reviews I read on Amazon. Im glad I did!!!
Perhaps only God or the Devil could make a man sing like this! Incredible vocals, technigue, and interpretations. Ultra great band too - where did these guys come from? Super production - beautiful sound. Great songs with cool lyrics. One of the best records ever to be heard anywhere - anytime. Chilling. Still cant believe anyone can do those things with a voice, with complete ease and always comes off completely natural. Mr Burdon's voice is never a put-on, no matter whether he goes for gentle whispers or Louis Armstrong type growls - he's the real
F-n deal! Every time he does something with his voice - you go -oh man I cant belive he can do that - do it again! - and then he does something else totaly new. Always stikes the right mood. Rock, blues, jazz, latin, folk - it dosnt matter - this guy is great. As well as all the musicians on this album. The song "Jazz Man" is an instant jazz classic - Mr Burdons Jazz vocal style is better then music -right in the groove - outstanding!
Please Mr. Burdon - Please Guys - do a Jazz songbook!!!

Ms. Battle does it again.......2006-03-29
Ms. Battle covers musical styles from baroque all the way to spirituals on this CD, and excels at each song she sings. My personal fav's are "Frondi tenere...ombra mai fu" "Mein herr marquis" "Vocalise" "Swing Low" "Piangero la sorte mia". One impression I get when I hear this CD, is that Ms. Battle had fun with each one of these songs. She sounds like she is enjoying singing them and is totally relaxed with full confidence in her voice. So many singers you hear sound tense, but not here. It's hard to explain really, but generally, when a singer is struggling and fighting to sustain a good sound or sing artistically, you can sense it. This CD is would make a wonderful sampler for someone new to Ms. Battle's voice. It is a shame, though, that she is such a "diva". Nevertheless, this is a delightful recording and I would strongly recommend it.
A charming, lightweight song recital.......2005-09-18
This recital is a pale shadow of the great one Battle gave with Levine from Salzburg, so I wasn't satisfied with one track after another of pretty, charming singing without deep musicality or committment. battle is capable of much beter. Her fans will be pleased, and that's about all.
Kathleen Battle Takes On Carnegie Hall.......2005-04-04
Every big artist wants to perform at Carnegie Hall, its' a sign of a true career. For Kathleen Battle, this must have been quite a night. This album captures that great night, solely built around her, in which she sang aria after aria in a spectacular showcase. Handel was a specialty of hers, and the lyric texture and coloratura heights are nearly dizzying. She makes it all seem so effortless. Furthermore, Miss Battle was a magnificent French singer- most coloratura sopranos excell in the French repertoire- as Beverly Sills did and as did Madie Mesple. However, Battle always makes me feel mixed emotions. One the one hand, she does have a classic, lyric-coloratura voice that nearly became extinct after the reign of Beverly Sills and even earlier with the likes of Lily Pons and Amellita-Galli-Curci. Battle has a bright, golden voice, capable of sweetness and refinement without hysterical declamation or any unpleasant sounds. It's such a shame she did not behave proffessionally. The stories were true. She behaved like a diva holding a whip! She was ungrateful and selfish and couldn't work well with her colleagues and co-artists. She was always late to rehearsals, left early, refused to socialize or ride in the same car with her other artists and went far beyond perfectionism- she behaved like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But for all these shortcomings, we love her voice. Her fans, and yes she has fans, continue to buy her albums even though she has long disappeared from the world of opera that once tolerated her but said enough is enough........
I'd give this CD 20 stars if I could! Sheer perfection!.......2003-12-07
God made the nightingale, and somewhere down the line, he touched a little girl named Kathleen Battle with what he originally gave to that bird from the beginning of creation. I cannot, for the life of me, believe that a voice could be so beautiful. I hear it, I marvel, but sometimes the sheer incredible beauty of this woman's vocal artistry is mind altering and surreal. Even the nightingale must suffer a moment of jealousy when a Kathy Battle tune is played!(This is bordering on blasphemous I know, and I beg forgiveness!) But Kathy Battle is simply amazing! This CD captures her at her best.
I'm not an opera buff by any means, but I love the human voice and great singing. There is not a bad song in the bunch. Like one reviewer, I too, am not a big fan of the spirituals segment, but I have a higher tolerance for it than she..I can still enjoy them for what they're worth.
Just BUY this CD...buy more than one if you can. One for home and one for your car. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.
P.S. Can someone tell me if this Carnegie Hall recital was also filmed and where I can get a copy of it? I cannot find many filmed recitals of Kathleen Battle anywhere. There used to be many at the Metropolitan Library in NYC, but all they seem to have now are her appearances in operas. I remember seeing a Met recital of her in a red gown on the cover of the vhs box, but they must have retired it. Any Kathy Battle fans out there who can help me get a video collection going, I would be most appreciated! (ryanmarcus1@juno.com)
Lovely.......2003-07-22
Kathleen has a beautiful voice, and it's wonderful to have a CD that includes both traditional opera pieces as well as fun gospel songs. I recommend this!

This is one fantastic cd, more people should know about it! Sonia Dada plays a wide range of styles and sounds on this one. The vocals and bass lines are simply some of the best, along with inovative rythms from the percussions. Buy it, live it and love it (just don't go giving your love away).

These guys just get better and better, this is a stunning album with unmatched musical and lyrical richness.
Although it isn't marked clearly, it is recorded in HDCD as was their previous album, "Lay Down and Love It, Live". The sound quality of this CD is spectacular, I use it as my reference CD when evaluating audio equipment.

Well, it seems Sonia Dada has managed once again to rip out my heart while making me smile the whole time. Lines like, "Fat Jack had a heart attack, he was slumped over dead behind the wheel of his cadillac" and "She don't wanna talk about it anymore, lost the battle, baby, lost the war," make this an unforgettable ride through the strange, surreal land of Dada. And the rythym, that funky, bluesy, spiritual trademark of S.D. has never been richer than it is in "My Secret Life."

Customer Reviews:
You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02
Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.
Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10
Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.
