Album Description

If you can imagine Portishead, with more accsessible vocals, rich harmonies, classical style piano playing, gorgeous string sections and the most amazing beats ever programmed, then you have Daughter Darling. This project is the culmination of 6 years of beat production, the most talented piano, guitar and string players, a world class DJ battle champion and a girl who knew she was going to be a singer since 3 years old. Every song has been carefully crafted into a masterpiece.

Natalie's unique voice provides a strong basis for music that is dark and moody. The title track "Sweet Shadows" deals with her emotions of moving to a big city, feeling alone with only the shadows to guide her as she walks around seeing many "soul-less" people. Voodoo games, is about an ex-boyfriend who can't let go, and uses a voodoo doll to try and continue to keep his violent hold on her from afar.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah McLachlan Meets Portishead.......2007-02-27

Sara McLachlan-esque breathy, ethereal, yet powerful vocals get a trip-hop spin from Daughter Darling, and it's a case of two great tastes that taste great together. DJ Infiniti's non-intrusive scratching raises the group's moody, folkish, Celtic-tinged singing and tunes from the list of Lachlan-wannabes and helps the group stake out territory of its own. However, the album is not so trip-hoppy that I think it would only appeal to fans of that unjustly overlooked subgenre; the voice and piano work are strong enough to carry the album even without the edge Infiniti provides. The album is consistent in quality all the way through, with numerous highlights, and is enjoyable enough to sustain repeated listens. But beware of listening too carefully: the quality of the music exceeds the quality of the lyrics, and you'll start to notice if you concentrate too hard. The best way to listen to this album is to lie back let it wash over you without reflecting on it too much. Let Daughter Darling hypnotize you. You'll get lost in this album and love it.

4 out of 5 stars Quick P.S........2007-01-23

The first track on Sweet Shadows, Broken Bridge, was also used in the first episode of Bones, Season One - that's how I heard of it, though it took some internet research to track down Daughter Darling - glad I did!

5 out of 5 stars notice how the people that give this bad reviews sound really pretentious & dumb..........2006-07-15

so dont trust them...all of these songs have a different make up (within the genre of course...there's not as much range as one song being gabber waltz & the other a sadcore country garage techno experiment...who would really wont that?)...the first six are great then the rest are all good as well but it's hard to stomach such a well-crafted cd all at once...might have to take a break, listen to something less interesting for a min. (i.e. lamb, nightmares on wax, k&d whatever whatever)
bottom line people!!!!
...this is the best american trip-hop outfit out right now!

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Shadows Indeed!.......2006-05-10

Daughter Darling has missed the trip hop boat by about a decade. Still, the album doesn't seem dated, and being a fan of trip hop, I'm glad to see a group still out there producing original stuff in the genre. Sweet Shadows may actually be one of the better trip hop albums, as in it is more balanced. It's less depressing than Tricky, but less poppy than Olive. It's got a nice combination of dark melodies that are somewhat catchy, while not being over the top in either direction.

The whole album is quite good and coherent. It sets the tone with the opening chords and doesn't waiver too far from that place of calm, subdued and perhaps a bit sad. This type of music always somewhat borders on the sentimental, melodramatic, self-pitying pit fall, but they manage to skilfully hover the rim without falling in. Honestly I was a bit scared when I saw there was a cover of Dust in the Wind on the album, but somehow they pull it off and make you almost forget it was a Kansas song.

This is a great album if you actually enjoy a rainy day every once in a while. It is quite mesmerizing and hypnotic, but then of course it also runs into the danger of being repetitious. Perhaps it depends most upon your mood when you listen to it, as to what form it takes. Either way, it is definitely worth checking out! And just one more thing, the album title Sweet Shadows is perhaps the perfect description for the mood and tone of this album.

4 out of 5 stars Shadows Of Knight - 'Dark Sides:The Best Of...' (Atlantic) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-08-02

An excellent compilation, with a total of twenty tracks. Most fans should totally dig about every cut here.Tunes that draw you in are "Gloria","Dark Side",their minor hit "Oh,Yeah","Light Bulb Blues",Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover","I'm Gonna Make You Mine" and "I'll Make You Sorry".The CD's last two cuts,"Alone" and "I Am The Hunter" among a few others I believe are from a later version of the band which the sole original member was vocalist Jim Sohns. There's no denying it,but 'Dark Sides:The Best Of...' can EASILY be said to define the '60's garage rock era.A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the New Place.......2006-03-29

I grew up in the suburban Chicago Area in the mid-60's. My friends and I frequently went to a teen club called the New Place hoping to find girls and to see local acts threatening to break out on the national scene - The Cryan' Shames, the New Colony Six, and the Shadows of Night. Appropriately named, the Shadows really were the Dark Side, playing harder, raunchier songs than either of the other two well-scrubbed acts. I don't think I have ever had a CD bring a smile to my face more quickly than this one. The Shadows were bad, unpolished, and wild. They captured the essence of the times, and still have a punk, in-your-face sound. I'm Gonna Make You Mine is about as politically incorrect as you can get. This is a great disc.

4 out of 5 stars Please shut the window!.......2004-07-03

The Shadows of Knight were a blues based garage rock band best known for their Top Ten hit cover of Them's "Gloria". They were never able to duplicate the success of "Gloria", although they made some good attempts. The only other real hit they had was a cover of Bo Diddley's "Oh Yeah", which barely managed to crack the Top 40. This CD features most of their singles (a-sides and b-sides) and some notable album tracks. The first seven tracks are from their first album, and they are blues based rock songs at their best. After that, they decided to experiment a bit more on their second album, with somewhat mixed results. There are six songs from their second album, plus three non-LP singles from about the same time period. After that the group broke up, but singer Jim Sohns hired some new musicians to continue the group name. This new Shadows (actually Sohns and some studio musicians) almost had a hit with the bubblegum song "Shake". That was followed up by another fine bubblegum song, "My Fire Department Needs a Fireman", which was a total flop. The "new" Shadows recorded the group's third album, which was a strange mishmash of blues based garage rock and bubblegum. Significantly, only one song from that album is included here. The Shadows of Knight struggled on and recorded one final single, the early 70s hard rock style "I am the Hunter". It flopped, and the band was never heard from again. Let's get outta here! I'm done now!

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite bands!.......2004-04-28

Every time I think of or even hear these guys name, one song immediately pops into my head, "Gospel Zone." It's not the first song I ever heard from them, but I find it to be their best. (and my personal SOK favorite) I have to admit, I don't have this disc but I have some of the tracks included here and have heard quite a few more. This is going to be my first Shadows of Knight CD purchase. I gave it 5 stars based on what songs I am familiar with because I'm seeing some really great ones here. This looks very, very good!
I have an incredibly clean mono copy of "Back Door Men" on Dunwich (found it used when I worked in a record store around '88) and was struck by the quality of the production when I first played it. "Gospel Zone" wrapped me around it's finger right away because of the guitar intro, the usual outstanding drumming, (these guys had a FANTASTIC drummer, possibly one of the best in rock's entire history) and the hand claps on the chorus. I'm a sucker for hand claps! And when they're compressed to the point where they sound like they explode they become irresistable. It reminds me of Mick Avory's drums on "It's Alright" by the Kinks. That track is also heavily compressed, (and that's not always a good thing, but sometimes it works). The production suited this song and it's arrangement perfectly. I love this track!

I have collected several of Robert Cobert's Dark Shadows music CDs over the past few years.

But I NEVER thought we'd see such a complete CD release as THIS!

These CDs claim to contain ALL of Cobert's output for Dark Shadows!

I am in shock at the huge number of cues in this collection...there are HUNDREDS of music cues to be heard!

The quality of the recordings is very, very good, considering that they were recorded in the 1960's.

The CD paper inserts contain a lengthy interview with Cobert himself.

This is a treasure trove for fans of Cobert's music for Dark Shadows!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Treasure Trove is a Cause for Rejoicing.......2007-02-04

This eight-disc CD set, The Complete Dark Shadows Soundtrack Music Collection, is an amazing and unique look at the show that wouldn't die, as well as composing unforgettable music scores for TV.

Dark Shadows, the first and only gothic soap opera, aired on ABC-TV from 1966-1971. During its much too short run, it established itself as a show that not only transcended its genre, but became an instant and enduring cult classic depicting supernatural suspence and romance.

Unforgettable characters, including a 175-year-old guilt-ridden vampire named Barnabas Collins (played to perfection by the classically trained actor, Jonathan Frid), a tormented werewolf Quentin Collins (portrayed with aching believability by David Selby), to a complicated research scientist and doctor hopelessly in love with the vampire, Dr. Julia Hoffman (brilliantly portrayed by the late and deeply lamented Grayson Hall), the show entralled viewers with an escape from the everyday doldrums of their lives.

Dark Shadows provided a gothic retreat of epic proportions focusing on the Collins Family of Collinsport, Maine and their many supernatural experiences. It offered the spooky mansions of Collinwood and The Old House, ghosts, incantations, witches, warlocks, as well as incredible romance, loyalty and time travel to the past and future and even other dimensions parallel to our own!

To make the unbelievable believable to audiences, creator Dan Curtis, who sadly died last year, developed a unique atmosphere that was remarkably maintained throughout its five-year run.

At the core of this gothic atmosphere were the brilliant compositions by Robert Cobert, some of the most memorable soap opera background music that was ever, or has ever, been written.

No fan of the show will ever forget the characters, the stories OR the music. The music instantly became such an intergral part of the fabric of the series that it was as if it was a breathing, living entity, a true supernatural feat in and of itself.

MPI Home Video had released four volumes of selected music on CD, including a disc remastered from a record album released at the height of the show's popularity in 1969. That album including spoken performances by Frid and Selby, as well music that included the haunting Josette's Theme and Quentin's Theme. Remarkably, the album, which hit Billboards Top 20 albums of 1969, remains one of the top five most successful TV soundtrack albums of all time, even receiving a Grammy nomination.

Now, for the first time, ALL of the hundreds of original music cues composed by Cobert for Dark Shadows have been digitally remastered and released in this one-of-a-kind eight-CD set.

It is nothing short of virtually unprecidented in soundtrack releases. Not only is every note in the vast Dark Shadows musical library included here, so are many rare and never-before-heard alternate and outtake selections never utilized on the episodes. Also, in each jewel case that includes two CDs each, a booklet provides vintage production listings for every track. There is also a new interview with Cobert.

In total, these eight CDs provide 7 hours and 45 minutes of, in my opinion, the best music ever written for a TV show.

This music not only evokes the haunting quality of the unforgettable show, but provides a unique glimpse into the creative process of composition. Every single cue fits into the whole and feel of the rest, a testament to the genius and dedication of Cobert, and is no small measure a contributory cause for the continued intense and passionate popularity of Dark Shadows more than 40 years after it debuted.

Anyone who loves Dark Shadows should have these CDs, as they provide a rich tapestry previously unavailable to the public. I am personally overwhelmed with gratitude that these gems were not only saved all of these years but have been released.

In addition, anyone who has an interest in scoring TV should get these CDs to learn how it's done right, how even the shortest cue can and does enrichen the whole.

Bravo to MPI for this release, and to the master himself, Robert Cobert, whose inspired soundtrack has been my personal background music since I first heard it in 1966.

Entertainment from England in the early 1970's. The music just cracked me up - but frankly, I watched maybe two episodes of the series as it aired here on weekday afternoons.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Effect of this Album on Dark Shadows "kids".......2007-01-24

I had forgotten this album until recently. I too owned an original vinyl copy. I used to watch the program everyday after school. I remember the first episode I saw, and it might have been the actual first episode, in 1964 when I was about six years old. Dark Shadows captivated me right up through high school. Recently though, I had a flashback kind of experience. A passing school bus and the feel of the day reminded me of childhood. I searched Amazon and found this listing. I played the opening theme. It was exactly 3:00PM EST. The feeling was extremely surreal. For a moment, the music transported me to a different time. A time when things I thought about might have been a little lighter, but a time in which the Shadows were always Dark!

5 out of 5 stars A Television First.......2006-12-18

I own an original pressing of this - bought when it was first issued, and for me, the best parts are a the recitations by Jonathan Frid, particularly "Prospero's Breaking of the Spell" ("Our revels now are ended, these our actors, as I foretold are all spirits and have melted into air. Into thin air..)and the very sensual "I, Barnabas. Robt. Cobert's composition stand by themselves in the world of soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars The Road To Collinsport.......2005-09-23

If you grew up sneaking over to the neighbors' house to watch "Dark Shadows," this one's for you. From the instantly recognizable opening theme(s) to the familiar suspenseful background music, this CD is a guilty pleasure from beginning to end. Beautifully remastered, it sounds way better than it did on TV. You can almost see Angelique mixing up a potion, groovy 60's couples dancing at the Blue Whale and the perpetual thunderstorms over Collinsport. The spookiet part, however, is the radio program featuring many now-dead (?) stars of the show at the end of the record. Lotsa fun!

Not the best metal band in the world, but they do deserve a lot more credit than they have been given. I love this band and they have a great style. Listening to this cd makes me want to go to Finland for the wintertime. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars progress in winter metal.......2005-11-23

This is a good buy for two full discs of music. You really hear a band find it's sound and get much better in the process. And as they get better they hopefully will now get bigger. Some of the older stuff is muddy due to a limited budget I would guess, but some has some real doomy almost sorrow moments that I really like and wish they would incorporate more of. If you like black, death or other extreme metal with a progessive slant check this band out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful earlier works.......2007-07-11

This is by far one of my favorite albums from the group. I would highly recommend this album as one to have someone listen to start any sort of interest with the group.

3 out of 5 stars Realm of mediocrity.......2007-04-29

I must say that in investigating the world of Midnight Syndicate over the past year I found that this CD seems to be the most-talked about, highly-praised and least available of their releases. Now, that I have it in my possession (the 5th Midnight Syndicate CD I have bought in 10 months) I find it to be kind of bland compared to Gates Of Delirium and The 13th Hour (although it's a step up from Born Of The Night which walks the fence between creepy and corny). While the mood and sound effects on Realm Of Shadows are nice (the crows on the CD made me think I had one trying to build a nest on my balcony), there are really no tracks that stand out. They all just kind of run together. I'm not saying it's awful. Like most things in life, it just doesn't live up to the hype.

5 out of 5 stars This was officially my first Midnight Syndicate CD....Life hasn't been the same since..........2007-02-02

You know, little did I know as I walked by this particular booth at a convention what I was listening to was going to affect me in the profound way that it did. A CD called Vampyre was playing and I stopped dead in my tracks and listened. It was simply beautiful. I asked the man at the booth if he had anything that might be appropriate for a graveyard? He recommended this CD. I also bought what was playing and didn't think twice about it. *This*, REalm of Shadows, was the first official CD that I listened to by this band known as Midnight Syndicate. I was completely transfixed by the music. I never sat down until several tracks later. I was officially crying my heart out by the second track saying "oh my God..this is so beautiful.." over and over.
That night, I didn't want to sleep. I wanted to keep listening to my new CDs as many times possible. I had never heard anything like this in my life. Before exhaustion took over I told myself I must not let the man selling these wonderful CDs get away without selling me the other two he had available! All I knew was, that I was slapped by so much inspiration that it literally hurt. Something long lost and dead inside me was reborn the night before. I saw so many images that needed to be created as a result of listening to this music. Midnight Syndicate became my instant muse. Soundtrack for the Imagination Indeed!
This review has little to say about particular tracks, but rather the over all emotion of experiencing this band's music for the first time in my own home. The peace I felt(despite the dark nature of the music). The mental images of my own yard haunt that hit me randomly in an almost *Field of Dreams* way so entangled that I had to built it to put the pieces together. Not to mention the images that came to me to simply put to canvas. I hadn't had ANY thing like this in my life that moved me to be more creative in my own life. I am thankful for this band and I will forever be dedicated to it. Thank you Ed and Gavin....

5 out of 5 stars Realm of Goth.......2006-11-29

"Realm of Shadows" (2000) is Midnight Syndicate's second dose of "haunting orchestrations and sinister sound effects (creating) a dark, gothic soundscape." Having purchased all of their CDs (twice - for work and personal use) and using their music (with their permission, of course) as soundtracks for our local Halloween haunted attractions, I can honestly say that I will always be anticipating their next release.

As with "Born of the Night" (see my review), the production quality of this CD was outstanding. The music is stirring and the sound effects are realistic. The raven calls in track #9 "Ravens Hollow," the synthesized strings in track #12 "Spectral Mist," and the creaking timbers in track #20 "Harbored Souls" are particularly noteworthy. I actually prefer Syndicate's limited use of vocal effects, which normally come off as "cheesy" attempts to sound creepy. And once again, the bell tones in track #13 "Soliloquy" and track #21 "Eclipse" should have been digitally sampled instead of using tubular bells.

There are 21 selections totaling a little more than 52 minutes of music. Most of the tracks would have benefited from lengthening and building upon the base music and effects- they left me wanting more. The best tracks on this CD are #9 "Raven's Hollow," #10 "Beyond the Gates," #15 "Serpent's Lair," #19 "Witching Hour," and #20 "Harbored Souls."

As with their previous CD, this music begs to be played on a high-quality sound system, preferably one with some kick-butt subwoofers and enough power to handle this CD's wide dynamic range. Otherwise, listen with care on less-capable systems before you crank up the volume.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully crafted piece, both chilling and inspiring.......2005-04-20

Enter the realm where shadows lurk and nightmares reign. Beware of long passed souls unsettling before your eyes as you listen to the dark and eerie tale of Raven's Hallow.

A must have for those who want a chill with a little story in the mix.

Great product....bad price. It's no cheaper elsewhere. MPI needs to quit charging the prices that PBS charges for pledge premium gifts. Good Lord! The video sets are also overpriced. You have a great product but you guys are ridiculous!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Victor Herbert.......1999-05-19

This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

5 out of 5 stars My name is Victoria Winters .................................................2006-08-07

This is by far the best musical compilation released in conjuncture with the brilliant daytime gothic soap, "Dark Shadows". The musical tracks flow beautifully and it is a stark reminder of the depth and brilliance that went behind creating one of the landmark shows of television. The set also includes the Quentin Collins / Pansy Faye duets of "I Want To Dance With You" - which is as lush, rich and rewarding when first heard on the series back in 1969! A great soundtrack - not only for fans of the show!

5 out of 5 stars DARK SHADOWS NEVER DIES .......2006-07-28

If you remember the show you know the music but maybe you have never heard it in cd form. IT IS AWESOME. Yes it sounded great on TV but wow in digital it is so MUCH MORE DYNAMIC. Hear the tunes and relive the memories. This is a favorite of Elvis And Meat Loaf

5 out of 5 stars Robert Cobert's "Dark Shadows" Music Soundtracks.......2005-12-26

This is classical! This is a very hard to find music from this classic 60's soap opera show. The show was great! As well as the music! This is a must have to any collector of great music televison soundtracks. Believe me! I know, the soundtrack is up there with the hard to find "American Bandstand theme" from the 70's (Remember that electronic music theme of that show?) I'm still looking for it! Help me! Other than that. I Love Dark Shadows!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good item, bad shipping.......2003-11-02

This item was a gift for a true Dark Shadows fan - a real "Darkie", as he refers to himself.

The CD is great and made a great gift. It is unfortunate that the time from date of order until the recipient received it was almost 30 days. The item is describes as "usually ships in 24 hours", and even with utilizing Super Saver Shipping should have arrived in under a week. The customer service people insisted it was because of Super Saver Shipping and the scarcity of this item that there was such a delay. In fact, I ordered two different items, and each arrived in different packages on the same day. A month after the order was placed.

5 out of 5 stars Great for any DS collector!.......2003-07-28

I highly recommend this cd for any Dark Shadows collector. I ordered it for one track only - "Quentin's Theme" by the Charles Randolph Grean Sounde. This single was popular on AM radio during the summer of 1969, when the 1897 story line was playing on DS, and it also happened to be one of the best summers of my life. This cd is also full of all kinds of other interesting and hard to find DS music tracks, so it is really a great item. I remember some of the other "easy listening" arrangements of the DS music being played on local radio stations, so it's a great memory maker for me. Ah, to be 13 years old and that carefree, again... thanks for taking me back over three decades.
